Lightning Cable in Washing Machine
I accidentally put a USB to Lightning cable in the washer and dryer. The cable is mostly ok, but the plastic at the lightning end got a little warped. Am I risking anything by trying to connect a device with it? I'm reluctant to damage an iPhone, but at the same time, those cables aren't cheap.
iphone 4s won't hold a charge
I updated my iphone 4s operating system to 8.1.3 , now the battery drains from a complete charge in about 5 to 6 hours on stand-by. I replaced the battery with a battery
I purchase online. I thought possibly that I might have bought a junk battery so I brought my phone to a reputable battery store and they installed a new battery. (The Apple Store would not work on the phone because I installed a battery) The original, online purchased battery and the battery purchased and installed all drain in about the same time. I've turned off apps, deleted most all my apps, turned Blue Tooth off,also tried reboot and a few other suggestions. Under Setting,Battery Usage, Home & Lock Screen are using 50% any ideas?
What are these files in my "~/Library/Safari/" folder?
So, I was messing with this folder and while doing this I turned show hidden files on and saw some strange files. These are the names of them, and sizes

The top files are hex files, and the last one is some weird encoded text and a link to a youtube channel. What are these files?
Migrating Bootcamp to new SSD
I bought a Mac Pro (Late 2013) about a year ago. I recently ran out of space on the built-in 250gb SSD (Windows was the culprit of that), so I bought a 1tb ssd replacement from eBay. I just installed it today, and I want to move all of my data over to the new SSD.
I've already got all of the Mac content copying over, as that is really easy, but I also want to put the Bootcamp partition back on the new SSD too. I created a 500GB partition for it, but I don't know how to move the bootable partition over there. I created a DMG from it in Disk Utility before I swapped out the SSDs, and I have that, but Disk Utility won't let me restore it to the new partition I created. It gives me an invalid argument error.
How can I migrate my bootcamp DMG to a partition on my new SSD without having to reinstall it completely?

Chrome extension for network settings
I currently have a proxy extension pulled off a chromium-based browser on my Google chrome, however I wish to have on my iPod touch. The extension controls my network settings when in use.
Is there a way to to see what the network settings are when the proxy extension manages my network?
I have checked the Network settings, but it looks like there is no change, so the extension must route the connections through itself before it reaches the internet.

I've upgraded to a new phone. My previous one that had my coc on it was an iPhone and now I have a droid turbo. Can anyone explain how to switch them over if it's possible?
Can I add a room number to an event's location?
Suppose I have an event at a building of which the location can find the address so I get a nice travel time estimate. Problem is, the building contains an awful lot of rooms and I'd really like to add the room number to the location (as that shows up in my overview).
So how can I add the room number to the location without the automatic travel time estimates breaking?
Only two categories visible in purchased iTunes
I have two movies, plenty of apps, and two books purchased. I set up a family sharing with my mother's macbook air and she bought a movie (on my credit card). She already watched it, but I don't see it in my library. Just like she don't see any movie or book I bought. I read (in other topics) that to view family member purchased items I have to open the Purchased menu in the iTunes app, however I see there only two categories Music and Apps. (I never bought any music) Why my books aren't visible? Can you please help me?

OS X crashes "No memory", but much of it free
I was running a Python code which may have increased the need for memory. Anyhow, the following happened, and I feel it should not.
- I have 16 GB memory and it shows only 3 GB allocated to Python
- Remainder of memory apparently not allocated to anything
- Should a single application be able to suck that much memory s.t. the rest of OSX becomes vulnerable / non stable?
Use BibTeX with Apple Pages to generate references and a bibliography
I want to use BibTeX with Apple Pages for creating references to my .bib bibliography and also insert the bibliography into a Pages document. I would like to use .bst style sheets to format the bibliography.
I'm currently working with BibDesk but could change to JabRef.
Is there better third-party scanner software for OS X than Preview?
I'm not overly happy with the UI for interfacing with the scanner on my Epson WF-3250 series scanner that's provided by the latest Preview that comes with OS X 10.10. It's clunky and awkward, crashes often. You have to reselect your options every time you use.
It's just, honestly, not very Apple-like.
Is there reliable third party scanning software that I could use in place of Preview for obtaining PDF scans of multi-page documents on the Epson's auto-feeder?
Edit: With OS X 10.9, Epson stopped shipping its own scanner utility. The ship a driver and instructions to use Preview for acquiring images on OS X.
Can I generate a clickable link to local file using relative path like "file:///~"
This is the background:
in my company, we use Google Drive and often have to tell each other the path to a particular file. Paths are long as we use a lot of nested folders, so it's pretty boring and time consuming to browse through all that.
Now, in my previous company, we used a central afp server, so the path was common to everyone, therefore I had created an applescript script that could get the absolute afp path to the file, people pasted that path in a mail or chat and the end user could click on that path which automatically became a link and the finder would open, selecting that particular file or folder that the link led to.
The reason I can't use the exact same script is that Google Drive folder is in the user home folder. So if user's name is Foo the path will be file:///Users/Foo/Google Drive, while for user Bar the path will be file:///Users/Bar/Google Drive
Clearly the path generated from user Foo won't work for user Bar
Since, at least in the terminal, the path to file:///Users/username equals to ~, I made my script generate links like file:///~/Google Drive/pathToFolder, but they do not work :( Clicking on such a link will open the finder, but won't select the right file or folder
This is driving me crazy because it looks like it should work but it simply doesn't... is there any other syntax I should try? Any suggestion?

All Apple Internet Apps are SLOW in Yosemite
A few days after upgrading to Yosemite, I started noticing that Safari was moving VERY SLOWLY. After a day or two of this it stopped loading webpages at all! So I switched to using Chrome, then my Mail app stopped receiving mail, it would send mail but again it is VERY slow. Then messages wouldn't sign into my AIM account, and I noticed that the App Store won't load any pages at all. I've searched around the web and found that some other people had the same issue, here's a link to one comment on an apple discussion thread that helped me several times, but now that doesn't even help anymore!
So the question: has anybody over here had this issue and found a solution to it?

How can I change the date format used in iTunes?
I recently bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 and installed the latest version of iTunes (12.1.1.4), my old PC used to display time formats as DMY but my new PC is using MDY.
My operating system uses the DMY format, I cannot find any options in the iTunes preferences and I'm using the UK iTunes Store. I don't know what else to try.

How does Internet Accounts on Mac Os X 10.9 and up work?
I'm having problems with trying to turn on syncing the Contacts of an Exchange email account in the Internet Accounts System Preferences with Yosemite (10.10.2).
Every time I click on the checkbox, it turns back off.
I've tried the same Exchange account on another computer, in another session and it works.
How can I make it work? Should I reset the Internet Accounts settings to the defaults. And if so, how can I do that?
More info on how Internet Accounts (~/Library/Containers/com.apple.internetaccounts) in System Preferences works since OSX 10.9 and up would be greatly appreciated!
Suddenly some folders are unreachable from my external hard drive
I have a MacBook Pro and I partitioned the internal SSD into two parts (150GB and 50GB). One of them (the 50 GB part) contains a bootcamp with Windows 8.1. I also have an external hard drive, which is 1 TB with both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connections. I partitioned this into to two parts also (500GB and 500GB). One of them is formated for Windows and the other is for Mac.
Since I don't have too much space on the bootcamp internal hard drive (50 GB) I installed MSVC2013 on the external hard drive's Windows part. After the installation I learned that I didn't save too much space, but it worked and I had no problems with it. Since I didn't need it anymore I uninstalled it, but then for some reason I had to install it again. For some reason when MSVC2013 was uninstalled I changed the external hard drives Windows partitioned part's driver letter to a different one. When I tried to install MSVC2013 again it didn't let me, since it wanted to install it to the same place where it was before and I couldn't change the installation path, because it was grayed out. I read it in some forums that this is a "normal" behavior from MSVC2013 and to change the installation path you need to format the whole OS. Formating at that time was not an option for me, so I thought I create a small partition from the external hard drives Windows partition with the driver letter what MSVC2013 wants. I created the partition with Disk Managment in Windows and the installation was able to finish. MSVC2013 worked again.
After all this I went back to the Mac part of my internal hard drive and I realized that now on the Mac side it doesn't recognize the Mac part of my external hard drive. In the Mac's Disk Utility it shows the part, but it is grayed out. So I went back to Windows to see if the Mac part of my external hard drive is recognized there and I learned that it is. So I thought I make a fast copy of all my data of the Mac part of the external hard drive and then the strange thing happened.
Some of my files were able to be copied and some were not. The folders which were not copied were unreachable. This is the error message what I get when I try to access them.
Anybody has any suggestion how could I reach these folders? All help would be much appreciated!
iphoto: deleting photos from iPhone doesn't work
Even if iPhoto tells me all the files are deleted, I can still find them on my iPhone under All Photos. There has to be a way to delete all pictures without separately selecting them on the small screen?

MacBook Pro upgrade to SSD migrating OSX and Bootcamp partitions
I wasn't able to find the info I needed here or on Apple's own forums or via Google, so here goes.
I have a MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 model with a 500 GB internal hard disk drive (non-SSD). Currently running OSX 10.8.5 on a 300 GB partition, and Windows 7 via Bootcamp on a 200 GB partition. OSX is under backup via TimeMachine, Windows is backed up manually on an external hard drive as a simple copy.
I would like to replace the internal hard disk drive with an Intel DC S3500 480GB SSD. Changing the drive itself should be easy via a guide I've found. But... instead of the 300GB/200GB partitions I currently have, I'm aiming for 400GB/80GB partitions on the SSD. The Windows 7 Bootcamp partition I currently have uses only 70GB, so I'd like it to occupy the 80GB partition on the SSD. Once I'm on the SSD, I will upgrade OSX to Yosemite.
Question: I would like to migrate both my current installation of OSX and the installation of Windows to their respective new (differently sized) partitions on the SSD, without having to re-install the OS'es. What steps do I need to take to make this work? (Any pitfalls?)

Bookmarks in Safari: Type bookmark name to go to it
I have a bunch of bookmarks named things like "CNC" "FB" and "HQ" and the like.
I'm a bit of a keyboard junkie. I want to be able to access these quickly, by typing CMD-L, and then such initials into Safari's address bar.
Sometimes it works, the initials make it into the Top Hits 
But, most of the time the google search comes up first. That's so much pressing I might as well have just used the pointer.
I saw Quickly Access Safari 6 Bookmark & History Address Bar Suggestions with the Keyboard? but I don't want to disable the suggested search, just down prioritize it under my bookmarks, which surely should be a better hit than random stuff on the internet.

How to disable Skype click to call in Safari?
When I mouse over a phone number in Safari, it is now a link which tries to call via Skype. I can't see any option within Skype or Safari to disable this. How do I do this?
I'm using latest versions: Safari 8.0.3 and Skype 7.5.

How to recover a corrupted external drive encrypted by FileVault?
I used Filevault to encrypt an external USB 2TB drive. Last week, I used the drive as usual, entering a password to unlock it to use.
Unfortunately, it didn't dismount properly. Since then I have not been able to use the drive: Disk Utility tried to repair it, but seems to have broken it even more, because now when I plug it in, Mac OS tells me that it can't recognise the drive, and prompts me to initialize / ignore / eject. Using terminal, the standard repair / verify commands I googled don't work. Please help?
How to accept Xcode license?
I want to install a C based toolbox on Matlab software. To do this, I should install GCC compiler. I think I have done that already. And also I have Xcode too.

How do I load shared music onto my son's iPhone?
I have home sharing and family sharing active on all devices. When my son signs into iTunes (v 12) on our iMac (Yosemite), he can see my music library. However, we cannot figure out how to put the music onto his iPhone (iOS 8). In other words, he can play my shared music library through iTunes on the iMac, but it seems he has no ability to copy my music to his device. Note that we are set up as two different users on my iMac. At one time, I was logged in as the user, and we sync'd to his phone to my account. We could copy music to his phone when that was the arrangement. I later set up his own user account on the iMac and made it the primary account for sync'g the iPhone. That was when I ran into this problem. Despite the sharing settings, he can no longer copy my music if he is logged into his account. With the understanding that it is preferable for him to be able to sync while logged into his own user account, does anyone know if it possible using iTunes 12 or some other program? If so, I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

When I save attachments by "Save All", I remember Mail.app before Yosemite used to save them to the download folder without asking me where to save. How can I do this in Yosemite?
Magic Trackpad stuck battery
I have a Magic Trackpad that sat unused in a work drawer for a few months. Like a total noob, I neglected to remove the batteries.
I recently reconfigured my workspace and decided to start using trackpad once more, but to my horror, the batteries had corroded and the one furthest in, is very very stuck.
I have tried a long neck, thin screwdriver to try and pry away some of the corrosion around the edge, and lot of banging/ knocking/ cursing, but the battery is still in place.
I welcome any suggestions on how I can remove the other battery and hopefully resurrect this trackpad into working order. I open to suggested chemicals/ power tools etc.

iTunes Insists on Trying To Re-Download Podcasts
There are a couple of podcasts (video podcasts, in this case) where iTunes insists on trying to download an older, already played podcast; it doesn't just want to re-download the episode, but it wants to download it twice, as if they're two separate episodes with the same name.
I've marked them as played. I've deleted them. I've checked in the Downloads folder in homedirectory/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media and deleted all the contents there.
Still, periodically, it wants to download these episodes again.
How can I convince iTunes to stop downloading the old episodes in question? Is there a database that may be corrupted, thinking I haven't yet played this episode?
(Note that it's not downloading played episodes in the feed. It's downloading a specific episode, and that specific episode is showing twice when it tries to download it, as if an episode from back in October is trying to haunt me. It's happening in 2 different podcasts I subscribe to, the only common feature seems to be they're both video podcasts and not just audio...)

Automatically sort Finder items based on file type?
I work in video production, when a new job comes in we use Post Haste to create a new directory with our folder structure and default files included.
What I'm looking to do is automate the process of sorting files into folders, via Folder Actions.
I found this tutorial, however this refers to one specific directory, and our directory is constantly changing.
One of the default Folder Actions -- with the purpose of alerting users to new items in a folder -- starts off by defining the folder as the folder the script is applied to:

Is there any way I can combine these two, the AppleScript and the Automator Workflow, so that the Folder Action can be applied to any folder, without the need to constantly edit the workflow?

Lots of Finder windows opening all at once
Last Sunday I was looking through Finder on my mid-2011 MBA. (I was clearing out my 'cache' and 'preferences' folders.) I must have either clicked something (I use an external mouse) or pressed something on my keyboard because suddenly all the folders started opening in separate Finder windows! There were lots of them and they completely covered the screen! But then I closed all the folders (when they'd finished opening...) and my screen looked normal again. Is there a menu option for 'opening finder folders in individual windows' or something?? Or a key combination that I was unaware of? Grateful for any help - intrigued!

How do I configure CURL to use the same root certificates as Safari?
It seems that CURL on OS X (10.10) is broken because it does not contain the same set of root SSL certificates as Safari.
Due to this it seems that there is a high chance for your to be unable to use curl with some HTTPS sites.
I observed that there is a guide on getting a list of certificates from http://ift.tt/1c1wg83 but this seems bad for two reasons:
You are forced to get the certificates using HTTP instead of HTTPS so with minimal effort someone could give you a wrong list of certificates.
These may get outdated and I would prefer to use the same set of root certificates as the rest of the OS.
Macbook pro mid-2010 randomly turns off?
This has been happening for around 6 months and it has gotten worse. I thought it was the battery because it had close to 1500 cycles. But I recently replaced it and now the problem seems worse. The MacBook randomly shuts off plugged in and on battery. I did the SMC reset by pressing control-shift-option and holding power for 5 seconds but that did nothing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Disable ⌘Q for a specific application
I know someone or the other has asked about disabling ⌘Q, but I like the shortcut, and I use it often. However, I use an email client called Airmail that unfortunately does not keep a service (for notifications) running in the background when it is quitted. However, if I press the close button a service runs in the background, allowing me to receive notifications.
But since I have a habit of pressing ⌘Q all the time to close apps, I was looking into a way I could disable it for only Airmail.
Anyone know of a what to do this?
iPhone 5 problem, "No Service" and not being recognised by iTunes
I've recently purchased a second hand iPhone 5. They demonstrated the phone making calls before I purchased it.
Unfortunately the phone isn't being recognised by iTunes, and is also very frequently showing me the message "No service". I did however very briefly have service earlier today, enough to send and receive a couple of SMS's.
The things I have tried are:
- Restarting laptop,
- Trying another laptop,
- Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (on both laptops),
- "Reset Network Settings,
- Rebooting phone,
- Airplane mode on / off,
- 4G on / off,
- Updating all software,
- Trying to turn off automatic carrier selection, but I get the message "Unable to load network list",
- "Reset All Settings",
- Trying many mixes of restarting with cables in and out and every different USB port available to me,
- Offering my lunch to the gods.
The software involved is:
- iTunes 12.1.50
- iOS 8.1.2
- OS X 10.10.2
I've also checked and the phone is definitely unlocked, and marked as last activated yesterday when I first tried to use it.
I would be greatly appreciative of any further suggestions.
How to update MacBook Air OS X 10.7.5 to 10.9
I don't want to update to Yosemite but need to update to at least 10.9 or higher so I can re-load my iPhotos app after doing a factory restore. I've tried both suggestions on here already and neither are helpful. On the first suggestion, the link takes me straight to the Yosemite upgrade and the second one, I couldn't find the OS X Mavericks app for software update.Tnx.
OS X Yosemite installation error: File system repair failed
My #Macbook Air has been running fine until I decided to upgrade to OS X 10.10, Yosemite. Its downloaded fine and When it is installing I get the message: File system verify or repair failed. I have 2 options either to Restart or to repair disk. Restart will again take me on starting error that File system verify or repair failed. And when I clicked disk utility in order to repair the disk, But of course the Repair button is grayed out only I can verify. It won’t let me change to my Mac as the startup disk either. I’ve tried starting in safe mode. Target mode. Tried to zap the pram. Nothing will let me back into my hard drive. I only have 1 partition so it is not letting me to start up with same HD as start up and save disk cannot be same. I then tried to create an image on my external drive but this also fails with the message: Unable to create Macintosh HD.dmg. (Input/output error) I am stuck in this vicious cycle of restarting and the installation failing. I cannot escape the installation process. Is there a way to start my system in either old OS or to complete the installation
iTerm FullScreen bug when switching desktops
When iTerm is fullscreen (on its own desktop), a new bug has started happening for me. If I swipe to another screen, say google chrome, and swipe back, it will be a fresh terminal. This has so far only happened when I've been sshing into vim on another machine. Does anybody know where this bug may be being caused? This has only started happening since yesterday!

Microphone / Headphones combo port does not work in BootCamp
I have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) that has a 4-pole TRRS headphone/headset combo port. On OS X any headset works nicely (e.g. the Apple iPhone headset with microphone).
On Windows 7 64bit with BootCamp 5.1, the same headset on the same combo port does not work with the driver as delivered by Apple with BootCamp 5.1 (more precise: 5.1.5640 ). Apple phone support just told me it is not their problem, because it works on OS X.
So I tried installing a better driver on my own.
According to the Windows Device Manager, my sound card is a Cirrus Logic CS4206B (AB 07). The closest match I could find on the Cirrus homepage was this one:

Finder Go To says Home folder (~) can't be found
Finder's "Go To Folder" normally can expand the tilde (~) to my home directory. As of last week, this stopped working. Screenshot below. It doesn't work for subfolders either.
What made this break and how can I fix it?

Everything just went fine following the tutorial, but when I restart my MacBook Pro I cannot choose the USB drive, it just doesn't show up.

iPad application could not upgrade through AirWatch (MDM) on iOS 8.1.3
I don't know what is the root cause of this problem. But we are facing problem when update the iOS version from iOS 8.1.2 to iOS 8.1.3.
The client could not upgrade the iPad application through AirWatch on iOS 8.1.3 and reported the issue.
When we are using AirWatch (MDM) and install application on iPad its install successful and then upgrade application through higher version its updated. This scenario working on iOS 8.1.2.
Now when we apply the same scenario on iOS 8.1.3.
- Install the application on iPad iOS 8.1.3 through AirWatch (MDM).
- Upgrade higher version application on iPad iOS 8.1.3.
- But this time it shows installing...
Please help us to resolve the issue.
