Fonts on my iMac randomly become blurry (badly anti-aliased) until restart

I have a late-2009 iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2.

Recently, I've noticed that some system fonts randomly become blurry, as though there's a problem with the anti-aliasing. This affects:

  • The OS X Menu bar

  • The right-click context menu

  • The side-bar in the Finder window

  • Etc.

In this screenshot - you can see how the text in my browser window looks sharp, but the right-click context menu items are blurry:

Blurry fonts in the right-click context menu

They are not blurry when I restart. At some point, usually with in a few hours, and not after any specific, repeatable event - they become blurry. (I've never noticed exactly when it happens. All of a sudden, when I stop focusing on my work, I notice that they're blurry.

If I restart the Mac, they become sharp again, but only temporarily.

I've never played around with any settings that might have caused this change (e.g, I haven't changed LCD font smoothing or anything). And I haven't replaced the graphics card. In short - I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of.

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight!

Spotlight preview broken in Yosemite

I recently discovered this nice little spotlight feature in that you can convert a number of bytes into a human readable format. E.g you can type 2147483648 bytes and it will give the corresponding number of "gibibytes" in the preview window. (I think it's documented somewhere that it can do conversions "like" calculator, but the standard calculator doesn't have a conversion for bytes, so this feature seems to be undocumented).

But the strange thing is that now the preview on the right pane of the spotlight window is fixed to the last conversion I did. That is if I do a new conversion (that is any conversion like $ in € not just byte conversions) I see the result in the preview pane, but I cannot see any previews of selected search results anymore even when I change the search term:

Broken spotlight preview

I'm not sure when it got broken, I don't think it was right after I tried my first conversions. But anyhow this is a pretty annoying bug so how can I fix this?

Is the black apple cloth that comes with the macbook pro is ok clean Iphone and Mac screens?

I use it regularly to clean my rmbp screen, and I've noticed a small scratch on the black panel few days ago, I thought it might be because I've used tap water or it was there and I didn't notice it.

now I used it to clean a second hand Iphone I bought before putting a protective guard on, and after I cleaned it I noticed small scratches of which I'm clueless if they were there or not (the seller had it for about 3 years, could have had scratches and I didn't see them because the screen wasn't clean?).

Is the cloth microfiber and is it ok to clean screens with it?

Spoofing app focus

I have a game that I want to leave running in the background to progress various in-game activities (production of units, harvesting of resources), but the game pauses whenever it loses focus. Is there a way I can spoof this so that it thinks it's the active window when it actually isn't?

How to copy text on Google Search textfield, when using Chrome for iOS7?

Once you type the text to be searched on the omnibox, it is replaced by a long URL, e.g. http://ift.tt/1weK234

Then, if you want to select some of the previous text, tap and hold will not work. You can double tap, though, but it doesn't offer the options to Cut, Copy, etc, differently than Safari:

Inline editing menu on Safari

Is it possible?

Is there other alternative?

Inspecting kernel_task

I have two MacBooks, one with a fresh OS X install and one with an older install. The older one has a kernel_task taking 1.52 GB of RAM. The newer one—416 MB. These aren't identical machines or anything, but I am curious about the magnitude of the discrepancy and what contributes to it. Is there any way to inspect what comprises the kernel_task footprint, ideally without needing to experimentally uninstall various applications/services at a time?

I did try:

Is there some way to make Mailbox for Mac access my Mac "Contacts" for recipients?

I'm using the Mailbox for Mac app.

(Yes, it's in beta, but it's fully public and available to all, so shouldn't fall under our "private beta questions" ban)

When I type names into the recipients field, it shows me some names (I assume they're names in my gmail contacts, but I'm not sure).

But it doesn't show me names in my contacts. I think it used to, but I know other clients I've used have offered me both the contacts taht gmail's servers have for my account AND the contacts on my Mac. So...

Is there some setting or trick to get Mailbox to access my Mac contacts?

iMac display RGB values

Why does the iMac display show non-zero values for blue and green pixels for a .dng image whose blue and green color planes are zero? I used the digital color meter to show the non-zero values for the blue and green pixels and I confirmed that the .dng file has zero values in the blue and green color planes using python scripts that open the .dng file into a numpy array and then inspecting the array values.

Thank you in advance for your help on this matter.

Any downside to using multiple mail and calendar apps on iOS?

I am wondering if there is a downside to using multiple mail and calendar apps on my iOS device? Specifically the iOS devices come with apple provide apps for both, but I have found 3rd party apps that work better for me. If I have both (Apple's app as well as the 3rd party app) configured, am I doubling the amount of data & memory I am using on the iOS device?

How can I prevent shift selection from expanding?

On Yosemite in current Chrome (and random other places, but let's try to just solve it in Chrome), if i selection some text (say the "sk differ" in "ask different"), then hold shift and press right arrow, it will expand the selection to include the next character to the right (selection becomes "sk differe"). If i then press left arrow, i'd like the selection to (again) become "sk differ". Instead, in some apps (at least Chrome), it becomes "ask differe". So it seems that it will only expand the selection, so pressing either arrow key only grows the corresponding end of the selection.

How can i make it so that it selects from a caret position that is at either end of the selection (NOT both)?

What takes so much space in my external disk?

My external disk (LaCie) is full! When I look at the individual folders within my disk, I see that only little space is occupied by visible documents. So I displayed the hidden files and found small files and directories that all seem to take very little memory. Looks like about 400GB is occupied by some unknown stuff. However there is a directory called .trashes.

enter image description here

When I click on GetInfo, here is what I see

enter image description here

And I can wait for a long time but never get an estimate of the size of this directory. I tried to estimate its size via the Terminal:

$ du .Trashes
du: .Trashes: Permission denied

I tried to delete .Trashes but I get this window popping up

Determine and Use Resolution as a Variable in UNIX script on Mac

I'm deploying a NetRestore image to multiple kinds of Macs: MacBooks, MacBook Pros, Mac Pros, iMacs and Mac Minis. I have several custom designed login screens that I'd like to use but everything before 10.10 requires that you know the monitor resolution otherwise the login background won't show correctly.

Is there a way to use the output of this code as a variable for a series of IF/THEN statements?

system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType |grep Resolution

The normal output shows like this

Resolution: 2560 x 1440
Resolution: 1920 x 1200
Resolution: 1920 x 1200

(This is if you have three monitors...I'd prefer to use the first result).

My intention is for the script to run when binding the Mac to Active Directory (which has to be done manually), so the resolution should already be available. It would select the correct resolution image and then copy it into the required location.

Or by chance does anyone have any good idea on how to create custom login window backgrounds and user backgrounds to work on any type of Mac with any resolution? (Just like the OS does when you select "Fit to Screen" in System Preferences)

Thanks!

How can I win the Apple student scholarship program?

WWDC 2015 is about to come. I've been meaning to go there for a very long time but it's pretty costly and I'm only a student. It's a fun place where you can meet new people, learn new things. I'm currently 19 years old and I develop iOS apps. I'm aware of how the selections will happen,i'll have to make a app about myself and the whole Xcode project has to be sent to Apple with a college proof. Can anyone give me advice on how to proceed forward with this and perhaps if someone who won can answer it would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

Email sent from my iCloud email has started going to everyone’s Junk

I have a username@me.com email address that I've had since around 2011. All of a sudden, about two weeks ago, I've stopped getting replies from people.

Turns out that my emails—including responses to an already-ongoing thread—are ending up in people’s SPAM and Junk folders.

Why is this happening and how can I stop it? It's a huge problem.

Change default country code MacBook Pro

If my router is set to use channel 13 when my Mac first boots, the Mac can't see 2.4 at all and lists the country code as US. Changing the channel to 6, the Mac can see 2.4 and the country code changes to X3 and channel 13 is available. Change the channel to 13 on the router whilst the Mac is connected to 2.4 and the Mac changes over to channel 13 fine.

So, the question is... how do I configure the Mac to be country code X3 straight away without messing around? It's obviously possible, just a software issue.

Calendar App with CSV import

At the moment i'm trying to switch from Outlook to Apple Mail / Cal.app and would like to know if anyone here has found a way to batch import Calendar events consistently from CSV files.

The usual CSV -> Google -> iCal route is not what i'm looking for.

Maybe an alternative (calendar) app for the Mac?

How to run than two R modules at the same time

I like two have two R modules running at the same time.

To achieve this i use R and Rstudio

this means I can run code through R while running other code through Rstudio.

What if I want three windows at the same time, but wanting to run all the same version of R (pumpkin helmet)? Now R does not provide 62-bit and 32-bit versions, I can't use these two plus Rstudio.

RKward does not seem like useful option.

How do I get an operating system onto a new hard drive?

I will be installing a new 500GB hard drive in my macbook. It is a late 2008, aluminum, 13-inch screen. Once I install it, how do I get an operating system that's 10.7 or newer (downloaded from the App Store) on to the bare/unformatted drive?

Some keyboard keys not working on password input to Yosemite login screen

As stated in the title some keys don't work when trying to input my password into the Yosemite login screen. The weird thing is that if my mouse isn't plugged in (Razer Naga) when I turn on my Macbook Pro the issue doesn't occur and if I restart my Macbook Pro, even with the mouse plugged in, then everything works as expected. Anytime the Mac is restarted in the keyboard works as expected on the login screen but when powering the Mac on it doesn't.

I have done an SMC reset to no avail. I never had this problem in any previous versions of OS X.

What do I really lose if I backup my iPhone to iTunes without transferring purchases?

I don't want to waste tens of gigabytes of space on my laptop to store apps that I can just as easily download from the App Store.

Assuming I would have to recover an iPhone backup from iTunes to a brand new replacement iPhone, what will I lose if I don't agree to transfer purchases when making the backup?

Yosemite black screen with cursor after log in

Running the Macbook6,1 with Yosemite installed. I have my macbook set up so that when it powers on, it automatically logs into my account. When I boot up my macbook, it goes to the log in window and shows my desktop background all blurred (like it is meant to) and attempts to log me in. After that, the screen just goes black and my cursor remains on screen.

How to deter full screen mode moving window to a new display?

If I use that green button to maximize a window

enter image description here

it will enter full screen mode and move my window to a new "virtual" display to the right (those which you can switch by swiping with three fingers on the touchpad). If I click the green button again, it will leave fullscreen mode and move back to the initial display.

I'm wondering if there's a way to make the fullscreen application stay on the same display it used to be before maximizing (or even better to disable multiple displays per monitor at all).

The reason I would like to do that is that if I e.g. watch a video with the VLC media player I usually do so in fullscreen mode. Then I close the program with CMD+Q and it switches back to the first screen. After opening another video it will start playing the audio only but the video is being displayed on a different screen which is rather confusing, because I have three physical monitors attached and each of it got multiple virtual displays.

How to make a cheatsheet/crib sheet using Pages

I am starting a Developers Meet-up group at my sons' middle school, and I am trying to get ready for the first one. I need to make a cheatsheet/crib sheet for the participants ala http://ift.tt/nEh5Yt in Pages, but I am struggling with getting the boxes to work.

What I need to make is something like a bordered Text Box, with the first line being a title section that has a background color, followed by some text in the body of the Text Box that is simply white background. Basically it should look like a little "window", with a colored title at the top and contents under it.

I can get the Text Box inserted, and I have a 1px border setup no problem, but I can't figure out how to get the title section to work. In fact, I can't even find where to set the background color of the text. I don't use Pages very often so I am struggling a lot to figure out where things are.

Once I get the Text Box working, I then need to be able to quickly replicate the Text Boxes for the various sections of the cheatsheet. I am hoping I can simply copy/paste more of them into the document and resize them as needed.

For the curious: The reason I am trying to do this in Pages is because my sons' school is an Apple Distinguished School. All the computers at the school are Macs, and all the students have iPads. Doing it in Pages allows them to park the digital copy somewhere the students can get to it to view/edit/print as necessary. I don't want to use http://ift.tt/nEh5Yt because some of the details I need to include in the cheatsheet would not be appropriate to share outside of the school. My fallback will be to simply do this using HTML, but I'd rather this be in Pages.

Keychain doesn't remember password for network drives

I have an MBP with Yosemite connected to my home network, and I want to automatically mount three hard drives located on a Windows 8 computer also connected to the network.

When I connect using "Finder->Go->Connect to server...", OS X remembers my user name and password, so all I have to do is this move three times, one for each hard drive on the Windows computer in question.

But I don't want to manually add these drives every time I log in or restart the Mac. So I add these network drives to "System Preferences->Users and Groups->My Name->Login Items" by simply dragging their icons from the Desktop to the item window.

But upon login or reboot, OS X doesn't remember the user name or password, and prompts me for it. And it doesn't help that I tick the "Remember password in Keychain" box.

What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong? Why doesn't OS X behave as I expect it to?

How to diagnose repeated OS X hang / spinning ball of death?

I got this error with everyday tasks. I tried verifying disk, permission. fsck -fy - files has been modified, then disk is ok. I repaired keychain.

Do you have any idea what causes this problems? nothing worked. What should I do now? I really want to know what causes the problem.

What important native iOS features would I be missing with Xamarin as my dev platform?

I would like to create a relatively straightforward app involving maps, login, data retrieval...

I want it to be on both iOS and Android and figured on using Xamarin.

Is there anything native to iOS that a cross-platform IDE would not allow me to do?

How to open different emacs version from the shell?

I have two versions of emacs on my machine. One came preinstalled and I have just installed a newer version with homebrew.

enter image description here

If I type emacs in the terminal, the old version runs. If I type emacs-24.4 then the new version runs. What do I have to do to ensure typing just emacs runs the 24.4 version and not the older version?

How do I change the artist thumbnail in iTunes 12 sidebar?

I'd love to select which artists' album thumbnail shows up next to their name in the iTunes 12 sidebar. Is this possible?

Connect 27" display to Apple Thunderbolt Display

I was about to buy a Thunderbolt Display thinking that I'll be able to connect my existing Dell 2713hm to it, so that when I connect the Thunderbolt to my rMBP, everything would just work.

But as I recently discovered, based on this document, where it says:

This Thunderbolt port is not compatible with DVI, VGA, or DisplayPort displays or adapters.

probably means that it's not gonna be possible.

Do you know whether there still is a way to get a multi display setup working, by means of a single thunderbolt connection? (not trashing my Dell 2713)

Configuring Time Capsule to distribute ISP given DHCP address

I am using tikona broadband internet and they usually have a 5 IP address restriction. I managed to by pass that by using a linksys router WRT120N . I setup the router to distribute IP addresses as 192.168.1.2-20.

However, when i am connecting my new time capsule, it seems to distribute IPs from DHCP as 10.x.x.2 onwards only.

How do i set up the time capsule so that it takes 10.x.x.x a its IP from DHCP and distributes over the network IPs as 192.168.1.X onwards?

That is also needed so that i will not have to login on each individual device with the ISP username and password on their website.

How can I search for MP3 files by the "Purchased By" field?

As I sort through thousands of MP3 files in iTunes, I notice that I have many files that are DRM and "Purchased By" another Apple ID (that I have no access to). How would you locate those MP3 files, searching for the name in the Purchased By field?

Where is the 'label/tag' metadata stored? Specifically 'kMDItemLabel'

I have migrated data from an old (MS Windows) server to a new storage but the label/tag data for files is displaying, but not for folders.

Is the metadata for the folders stored in the .DS_Store file, or elsewhere?

Using the command mdls, specifically the key that has lost its value is: kMDItemLabel

iPhone -- Find Friends alerts

I receive more than one same alerts instead of single alert on my iPhone 5S on find friends app. How can I remove same remaining alerts. For example I set one alert for my wife arrival at home but I received four times alerts. Please guide me, how can I remove unnecessary alerts.

Periodic Backups to a remote Windows Server folder with OS X

I need a tool that will allow backups of specific folders to a remote Windows Share. The Macs connect via SMB or CIFS, meaning AFAIK rsync is out of the question.

I only need it to backup on folder, but having it automatic would be preferable.

Yosemite keyboard shortcut for "keep both" "stop" or "replace" when moving files in Finder?

When you copy or move files in the Finder in Yosemite and there is a conflict, a small dialog box pops up proposing:

keep both stop replace

(or "skip" if you press option).

However, I can't find any way to choose one of the options with the keyboard.

There's no default option. Cmd-R doesn't work for replace. Escape does nothing.

I've tried every combination I can think of and nothing works.

Are there keyboard shortcuts to choose these options?

Will a bootable USB made with boot camp work on PC?

I just finished building my PC. It has no optical drive but I made a bootable usb with my iMac. When I plugged it in my PC motherboard recognized it, I chose to boot from the USB but it takes to me a blank screen.

To troubleshoot, I tried it on my Asus laptop running Debian. I selected the usb to boot and it just boots up Debian. So something is not working with the USB. Any suggestions? Is it possible that making a bootable USB with boot camp won't work on PC?

Port forwarding Yosemite

I have a server running on my imac (port 8000) and I want my ipad to be able to visit it through the local network so I set this rule using pf anchors (hence ipfw is gone)..

It doesn't work, what am I missing?

file: /etc/pf.anchors/com.test

rdr pass on lo0 inet proto tcp from any to 127.0.0.1 port 80 -> 127.0.0.1 port 8000

enable the command:

pfctl -ef /etc/pf.anchors/com.test

Visiting my imac's ipaddress from the ipad 192.168.1.1 gives me an unreachable message (safari)
