High windowServer CPU usage on Yosemite

This is (probably) a follow up to WindowServer high CPU on Yosemite:

Since upgrading from MountainLion to Yosemite, my MacBookPro5,5 is showing bad performance while working with native windows like Finder, System Preferences and Application Switcher. 'WindowServer' process shows high cpu usage (above 50%) while doing these and always tops the 'Total cpu usage' in Activity Monitor. Updating to 10.10.2, erasing the disk and making a fresh install, following any recommendations about transparency/display/... settings I can found on the web, in the follow up page and its follow ups, even applying combinations of them did not have any significant effect.

Is this problem specific to this model (or some models including this), has anyone (using the same model) found a solution yet?

How can I stream iTunes movies to TV via Chromecast

I need to watch my iTunes movies on the TV via Chromecast. I've actually found something called TunesKit could do such a thing. But I still need to know whether it's possible to not applying a third-party software in order to watch iTunes movies on Chromecast? Thanks.

Mac as digital signage - change current video

I'm working in an environment where we have a Mac Mini connected to a display in a common area. The display is simple - it plays a preset video in Quicktime on a loop.

Iwould like to be able to change that video periodically without 'interrupting' the video on the screen. I.e. I'd like the solution to scan a folder periodically and if the video has changed start playing it. It seems simple in concept but hard to achieve with Googling, which is where I hope the community can help.

So far we have just been remotely connecting to the Mac Mini and downloading the new video and reopening it, but this isn't the most elegant solution. I've also looked at digital signage options but they all seem a bit over the top for what I need.

pop up on mac from AVG

I installed AVG antivirus then deleted it using the AVG website. I keep getting popups on my imac using Yosemite 10.10 stating Problem Report for Loader Agent. the popup persists even though the program has been deleted properly. the path to the file is: /Library/Application Support/AVG/*/LoaderAgent.app./Contents/MacOS/ AVG support has not been helpful to delete the popup.

Please advise.

How do I change the path that is being searched for launching an application?

I am trying to launch the D programming language compiler DMD, but the terminal is giving the following error:

dmd: failed to launch executable at /Library/Compilers/dmd2/osx/bin/dmd

But there's not folder called dmd2 under /Library/Compilers.

I can launch the dmd compiler from this path /usr/bin/dmd, but I don't want to type this path every time I need to compile a source code file.

This is my $PATH:

/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.4/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/opt/X11/bin:/usr/texbin

Is there a way that when I type dmd it launches /usr/bin/dmd, instead of trying to language a compiler under /Library/Compilers/dmd2/osx/bin/dmd?

Menu bar on web pages not visible in Safari

I am facing this problem when ever I am visiting any website that has go a Menubar on the top, then the part remains half invisible in Safari.

Backing up a RAID experiencing I/O issues

I recently began working for a company that has an OS X Server with a PROMISE Pegasus Thunderbolt RAID (RAID 5) attached as a file server. Within my first couple of days, it became apparent that users were having performance issues reading from and writing to the file server (which had been a problem for several months before I started.)

After a quick investigation, the RAID was near capacity (4.99 of 5TB used, 14GB free.) We decided to purchase an additional RAID system and are expecting it within the next two days.

Meanwhile, I have been unable to successfully back up the data files. I have tried using Disk Utility to create disk images of the entire volume, as well as images of individual folders within the volume. It never completes and returns a generic error:

"Unable to create [folder].dmg. (Input/output error)."

Console shows hundreds of the following error:

kernel: disk3s2: I/O error. 

I ran "diskutil -list" in Terminal and confirmed that disk3s2 is the RAID volume. I have also tried to manually copy (or even drag and drop) important folders to another volume, but that has also been unsuccessful.

Does anyone have any other ideas that may help? This data is mission critical, so any and all advice is welcome.

iphon/iPad share failed to start because TCP Port 7100 is in use

I am rookie with iPhone products and I have to do some live presentation where I have to to present with my iPad activities on a screen relayed using an App which enables airplay on the client device (PC or MAC)

• Both iPad and client machine are on the same network


• I have launched the app called Zoom on the client machine(Mac)

However, I do not see any option to airplay on my iPad. Also, what I saw here was that I am seeing an error on my Client machine(Mac) which looks like following:

"iPhone/iPad" share failed to stat because TCP port 7100 is in use. Close other application and try again.

Any ideas why?

Macbook Pro 2012 (Non retina) OS X 10.9.2 Belkin DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

When connecting displayport to HDMI adapter to my new 65" Vizio Smart TV. However, when I make the displays dual (that is, side by side), when watching movie with VLC player, if i try to maximize the movie on the TV, it blacks out my screen on MBP making it unusable. When i very first tried it, it worked fine, i could watch a movie while using MBP, but now I can find no way to make it work. Also, if i maximize safari or firefox on TV, macbook screen can still be used, only when trying to watch movie will MBP screen black out and not work until movie is minimized will screen come back.

ANY help greatly appreciated.

Upgrade RAM or switch to SSD?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz) with 4GB of RAM (2x2) and a 250GB hard drive that's about 85% full. It's been running pretty sluggishly lately even for basic tasks. It is 5 years old, but a new laptop isn't really an option for a year or two. I use it primarily for web browsing (lots of tabs) and some Photoshop work.

Would I see more improvement from upgrading to 8GB of RAM or swapping out my hard drive for an SSD? Also what would the cost differential be between the two since I'm planning on only keeping this computer another year or two?

Any insight would be helpful.

Wireless clients can't connect when I extend my network with an AirPort Express

I'd like to create a roaming network so that all corners of my building have good WiFi coverage.

Here's my setup:

• Mac Mini running OS X Server (with DNS, DHCP, Open Directory enabled)


• 24-port switch


• Airport Extreme Acting as our router (connected to cable modem and to switch)


• 3 Airport Extremes (connected to the switch)

The AirPort Extreme exposes a WPA2 Enterprise network and a WPA2 Personal guest network. The main network's Radius configuration appears to be correct.

When I'm only using the AirPort extreme everything works well, except there are some parts of the building where the WiFi coverage is spotty at best. As soon as I extend my network with one of the Airport Expresses no one is able to connect wirelessly.

Is there any issue with my configuration that will prevent it from working? Or something small that I may be overlooking?

The (automator) services are not showing in the contextmenu. I created some services, but if services aren't shown in the context menu I can't use them.

Automate Fn key switch when opening Excel

So Microsoft released a free preview of Office for Mac, and it is pretty sweet.

One of my biggest problem when using Excel on a mac has always been that the most popular/frequent shortcut (F2 -> edit cell) was not available on macs (there was a default replacement, cmd-T I think, but not half as handy as F2).

Now F2 is here in the preview, great! But one still has to either press the Fn key, or switch the whole Fn key row (link from Apple page). Hence the question:

Is there a way to either:

• selectively only switch the F2 key, or


• switch the Fn key row automatically when opening Excel?

How to add a caption to an image in Pages

How does one create a caption for an image in Pages? In Word it is easy, you simply right click on the image and “Insert Caption…”, but I cannot find any way to do it at all in Pages?

You can set a ‘Description’ on an image, however that only affects voiceover, which I do appreciate! But I also want the ability to move the image and it’s caption together.

I am using Pages 5.5.2, I understand that this is easier in Pages ’09, but I don't have that version anymore…

Is it possible to throttle the iCloud photostream sync in OS X?

I have a large iCloud photo library. Once in a blue moon my iMac running Yosemite decides to forget all about the synced libraries, and I have to re-enable the iCloud streams. However, my little DSL line will then be clogged for hours on end, because OS X downloads gigabytes of pictures.

Is it possible to throttle the speed to a certain setting, say 1MBit/sec? Or at least to pause the sync, without having to re-download everything?

Network Link Conditioner has no effect on local nginx

I have Network Link Conditioner installed and working on Yosemite. With the profile '100% loss' enabled, I cannot access any non-local website anymore.

My local nginx is however completely unaffected. No matter whether I bind and access it via

listen       8080;

or

listen       127.0.0.1:8080;

or

listen       192.168.1.2:8080;

it bypasses NLC. How do I get this to work?

When I present sth in presentation mode (powerpoint) I cannot switch to safari or whatsoever. My background screne is showed and I cannot get rid of it. Can someone help?

How to increase max socket connections for Yosemite 10.10

I'm trying to test a network service app that allows for a large number of simultaneous socket connections.

I have adjusted /etc/sysctl.conf with the following:

kern.maxfiles=65536
kern.maxfilesperproc=65536
kern.ipc.somaxconn=10000

With this in place, ulimit -n shows I have a 65536 "open file" maximum. Yet my service still gets stuck around the 1000th connection.

Thinking that perhaps it's something specific to the platform (Node), I re-implemented a simplified version of it in Golang, but it exhibits the same problem.

It also happens if I split the "client" side up into several procs that each open a handful of connections. The service always get stuck around the 1000th connection.

lsof -p <pid> shows 1011 IPv6 connections like so:

What is imposing this maximum socket connection limit, and how can I expand it?

Distorted Audio from Speakers and Line-Out

I've been working on my early-2008 iMac of late, replacing the HD with and SSD, and upgrading the CPU to 2.8 GhZ. The SSD and new CPU seem to be working fine, except after I finished I ended up with this weird audio problem: ALL audio is distorted. I've shared a couple of links to demonstrate:

This happens both through speakers and audio out. I cannot seem to find the source of the problem. I've tried the following:

• Replaced the audio board


• Replaced the audio board / logic board flex cable


• Replaced the logic board


• Booted off an external HD


• Downgraded to Mavericks


• Reset the PRAM


• Reset the SMU


• Terminated CoreAudio

NOTHING seems to work. The audio just keeps coming through like it does above. My only thought is maybe my power supply is shorting out and messing with the audio, but I don't want to pony up for a new component until I have a better idea.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Note: This only happens after I boot. The startup chime is not affected.

iOS Reminders caldav file name

Here's my current setup:

• Server with radicale installed and configured


• Mail & reminders iOS account setup connecting to my server

With this setup, I'm able to add and sync calendars, contacts, and reminders from my server to my iPhone and various other devices. The iOS reminders app automatically displays the correct list names from the files on my server. For example, the file named Bills on my server shows up in the Reminders app as a list with the title Bills. However, creating a new list directly in the reminders app creates a new file on my server that's name is a GUID. For example, creating a new list named Fake from my iPhone creates a file on my server named 0847796F-C35C-49BC-A41A-0C50E41F0266.

The inconvenience is that I need to be home (due to firewall restrictions) and SSH into my server to find out or change the file name generated by iOS before I can add it in other applications, like Thunderbird. Is there any way to force iOS to create files with names that match what I enter on the device itself instead of using a GUID?

Could I have any problems after activating a mac in this situation?

I would like to buy a macbook air from a market place similar to Ebay. The macbook is intact, never been unboxed/serial was never activated but the seller can't provide any proof of purchase so I don't know if the mac was stolen or not.(even if it was never opened...).

The thing is, the seller sells it at a lower price than a retailer would sell it here in my country so it would be a great deal. I have a 3 day return if not satisfied deal but I was wondering...in case the macbook was actually stolen, after I'll activate it...could I have any problems with it? (never used a mac before but I know there's an option to erase and block the device in case it's stolen)

Changed my Apple ID and now can't download old apps

I changed my apple id some time ago and I am wanting to download an app I used to have on my phone, crunchyroll to be specific. But every time I click the icloud icon to redownload it it shows the loading visual for a second or two then stops what it is doing and shows the icloud icon again.

Is there anyway to fix this? It happens on all apps I once had on my iphone that I downloaded/installed with my old apple id.

System applications can't connect to the internet, others can

I recently installed OS X 10.10.3 beta (14D87p) and I found that all system applications (App Store, Safari, iCloud, Mail, ...) can't connect to the internet while others (e.g. Google Chrome) can. This happens after a couple of minutes from startup (before this, all apps work perfectly). Drag and drop gradually disapearing on OS X versions

I find drag and drop features dissapearing on succesive, can't drag text to be searched on Safari, Mail still works, iTunes is getting more menu based... is this an app issue or OS X issue, Apple going into a different design direction?

Can't delete apps that are no longer available in App Store

I have four apps that are no longer available in the App Store. They're not installed on my phone (which is fine). Every time I connect my iPhone to I get this message in iTunes: "Some of the apps in your iTunes library were not installed on the iPhone because one or more errors occurred." (Screenshot)

In iTunes I can search for the app and the icon is grayed out: http://ift.tt/1FMio2L Click Install does nothing.

I've searched for these apps on the App Store and they're not there. How do I remove all four of these apps to avoid getting that message when connecting my phone to my computer?

Resetting SMC on a Macbook Pro

About a couple of weeks ago, I tried turning on my Macbook Pro and it seemed completely dead. I plugged in the power cable but it still didn't work. Since it's not under warranty anymore, I opened up the back, disconnected the battery, plugged the power cable in and this time it worked. After booting it up I plugged in the battery and it started charging, I can use my Macbook without the cable fine, but other issues occured.

Here are my MB specs:

• I can't power on with the power button so I have to either connect the power cable or sometimes disconnect the battery (I think this is based on how much the battery is charged)


• Camera doesn't work anymore (no device connected)


• Power button doesn't work at all

I can't reset SMC (I can't boot properly and nothing happens after pressing the keys). I've tried all the things listed under this Apple's Guide

I've tried updating the SMC firmware, but it didn't help.

Isn't it possible to reset the SMC (which I think is the cause of this) through the terminal or by disconnecting the internal battery(logics board?) or something similar?

MBP 15" audio input very bad quality

The audio input of my MBP 15" 2011 is pretty bad no matter if the ambient noise reduction is checked or not.

I've try all kind of sound adjustment from the control panel but I can't get it good.

In order to tell you what's the sound quality with words: If I make an audio call the other person doesn't ear me well and have to set an upper level to understand me. If I type something on the keyboard, then the callee become deaf instantly.

So the fan & keyboard sounds are very loud whereas my voice is quite low. How can I (try to) fix this?

Advice for troubleshooting hard freezes associated with Safari? (Mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, 10.10.2)

I have a Macbook Pro 10,1 (Mid 2012) running 10.10.2. Over the last few months, I have had issues with the system suddenly hanging - mouse won't move, keyboard does nothing, and the clock is stopped. I have to hold down the power button and restart the computer when this happens.

I have been experiencing these freezes ranging from daily to weekly. There is no consistent action that reproduces the freeze on demand. At some point in the last few months, though, I did switch to Safari from Chrome as my primary browser because the battery life seems so much better when using Safari. I've been doing a project over the last week that is dependent on Chrome, and as such haven't been using Safari, and have had no freezes. In retrospect, I think the freezes began happening when I started using Safari regularly.

I'd prefer to not have to choose between using Safari and having a stable system. Is anyone aware of issues like the one I'm experiencing? Any suggestions for further troubleshooting?

How to share Family calendar with non-family member?

I have set up our family with iCloud, using iCloud Family Sharing. Currently, myself and my husband define our Family and use our Family calendar for household events.

I also have a work iCloud account and would like to be able to subscribe to my home Family calendar from my work account so that I can see family events on my work calendar. Is this possible, and if so, how can it be done (without adding my work account as a family member)?

How can I automatically external speaker whenever bluetooth headphones are turned off

This is just a convenience question.

I have a pair of bluetooth headphones. Whenever they are turned on, I want sound to come through them. When they are turned off, I want sound to come through the speakers. Is there some kind of app/utility that automatically switches the sound output device based upon the status of my bluetooth headphones?

Launchd to only run on schedule, not restart?

I have a script that I wan to set for 3:30am daily and it does run at the set time but it also runs on every restart of the computer which I do not want.

How do I make this work with just the schedule in place and not run on every startup of the computer?

Network account problems with mac server OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard

Okay the situation is this. Yesterday my company changed our dns server, because our former one, was too unstable to work with. anyway today i went to one of our mac server, because it needed to be configured because of the new dns server. So i tried logging in to the local admin, because it could find the network account server, because of the domain shift, but I just froze when trying to log in. okay so I went down to our server room to get a look at it locally. I tried logging in to the local admin, but i froze again. So i tried pulled the network cable out, and suddenly i could login just fine. I tried logging in via vnc once again and it just hanged. better than it freezing, but still a problem. so i logged in locally. went to system preferences to edit the path to the network account server, so the mac server could find it once more, but then it just froze the system preferences when i went to login options. so i restarted back and forth some time and finally got to edit the path to the network account server, but when i typed it in, the mac server just say that the network account server is not responding although all other computers, both linux and mac, are using it just fine. I tried updating, rebooting without the network. tried FQDN for the network account server, it's ip, it's hostname nothing work.

Does anyone have any clue to what is going on? cause I really have no idea what to do, other than maybe reinstall the system, which i would like to avoid if possible.

App crashes, dock icon remains, can't reboot, yet no process in ps aux to kill

I've been encountering an extremely annoying problem since I upgraded to Yosemite. FCPX (but I've been having reports of this problem on other computers with finder.app and safari.app) sometimes will crash on exit (with no detectable log trace) and its icon will remain in the dock with the usual "this application is not responding" menu warning. Force quit won't work Rebooting can only be done the hard way because the stuck app is preventing a soft one yet no single process regarding FCPX is listed when in the activity monitor nor there is one in psaux. No zombie processes to be found; computer performance is fine. If I open an FCPX library, I'll get a dialog stating that "The application "Final Cut Pro" is not open anymore", which is quite irritating q:

Does anybody have the slightest clue what's going on here? It happens often enough that hard resetting every time is not a viable long term solution.

Also, I'd be extremely useful to know what to do when this happens on other machines with other apps (:

What's the ff-double problem in iOS-devices and Mac safari?

So I tried everything and don't know what's the problem. Safari on Mac and iPad have the same problem. On Chrome & Mozilla all is fine.

keynote control text box size

How do I control the text box size in Keynote. My main problem is that I can't even select the box, though I can select text within the box. When I click on the paintbrush on the upper right of the keynote page, and then select Arrange, the dimensions of the textbox are shown, but greyed out.

Very frustrating. Of course, Keynote Help is no help. Usually Google can find the answer in such situations, but not in this one. There is just an assumption that you know how to select the textbox itself, rather than the text inside the box.

I am using OSX 10.9.5 on a Macbook Pro. My Keynote is version 6.2.2. I do get messages that I should update Keynote, though I would first have to update my operating system. I hesitate to face the inevitable disruption just before giving a big presentation before a large audience, perhaps an unwise decision to try Keynote for the first time on this occasion.

Custom desktop icons not updating on paste (Yosemite 10.10.2)

I've had custom desktop icons for the longest time and it has worked beautifully until I updated to Yosemite. Now, changing desktop icons works intermittently at best, if not at all.

When I paste a copied graphic to the Get Info icon, I can see the file size of the alias change, as if it has added the icon to the alias, but neither the top icon nor the Preview icon changes.

Any idea why this has started happening and/or how to make it work properly again? I've tried clearing the icon cache in several ways, as well as restarting Finder and the computer, clearing the icons out of the aliases, etc. My feeling is that there is some file somewhere corrupted.

Why don't Windows 7 bootable sticks start on MacBook?

On Macbook air ~2014 when I created the bootcamp partition and the Windows bootable stick, it made a stick that can start an install just fine on Windows computers.

Why doesn't that bootable stick start anymore on Mac after the botcamp partition has been deleted? What special setup does that bootcamp do on the partitions/setup process ?

Can I re-create the proper environment with a partition manager starting with the blank hard disk ?

I tried erasing all paritions and then try to boot from that windows stick that bootcamp created but it doesn't boot a Mac anymore (boots fine on PC).

How can I send a set of photos from iPhoto using my gmail address?

I can email photos from iPhoto as follows:

1. Click on an event to open the folder.


2. Select photos (with shift and command).


3. Choose Email... from the Share menu.

This will send an email from my @me.com address.

How do I send photos from another email address (such as gmail)?

Of course I understand that I can Reveal in Finder... each photo individually and attach it to an email message. I can also run ImageMagick mogrify on the images and then send the result. I am looking instead for a quick method that lets me just click to select the photos and also gives me the option of sending down-sampled versions of the photos.

Cannot redownload an app from iCloud after deleting it from my iPhone

I have purchased apps and they show on my iCloud but after deleting it from my homepage I am unable to redownload it from the iCloud. After clicking in the cloud icon on the AppStore page it is not installing . It shows it's trying but eventually does not install . Kindly help pls. I keep trying to download apps and the little thing that you press to download it does the circular thing it does and then it stops and doesnt download my app which is really frustrating ive turned my phone on and off 6 times and nothins happening

Finder tags via server

We are a group of Mac users (mix of Yosemite and Mavericks) that share files on a OS X Server (Mavericks). When someone has done a job on a file, they tag it. All users have made similar sets of tags. With this system we keep track on who has worked on the files. This works fine up 'til the time when we wanted to make searches and search-folders for specific tags. You see, searches comes up with the files showing just one of their tags, and with different labels than when just browsing the same files in Finder.

Why is that? And more importantly, how can we fix this? How are tags/labels really identified on servers and shared volumes?

Problems with target disk mode, hd does not show in Finder/Desktop (only in Disk Utility)

I have a MacBookPro who goes straight to Disk Utility when I try to start it (it totally froze and I forced it off and on). And no luck in repairing the hard disk (Disk Utility can't repair ...) I am trying to copy from my hd to a borrowed MacBook putting my MacBookPro in target mode using a thunderbolt cable. But the icon for my hd doesn't show in Finder/desktop. I do find it in Disk Utility and tried to repair it here as well but it failed. Is there anything I can do? Will DiskWarrier help me?

Mac Book Pro - Logic board stopped working

I Had purchased Mac Book Pro before around 14 month from one of the apple store. It just blinking and doesn't start. As per customer service they ask to replace logic board and It costs almost around $650 (38500 Rupee). And my warranty is just expired before two month. I believe that I got defective model of Mac Book Pro, As In My warranty period also there were such issues and it was issue of hard disk.

I am a normal user regarding to use Mac Book. I don't do gaming and etc.I just use it for my professional purpose.

I can't pay this much amount again in around one year duration. Please suggest what is alternative or what can I do As warranty is expired.

Copy iOS Calendar to Sunrise Calendar

I use Sunrise Calendar for all my meetings and appointments so it's completely replaced iOS Calendar for me. However there is one feature I find invaluable in iOS Cal and it's the ability to click a date in an E-Mail or Message and it add it to my calendar.

It always goes to iOS Calendar which isn't a problem but is there anyway to replicate iOS Cal to Sunrise?

How to sync Keyboard shortcuts between iOS and OS X when iCloud Drive is turned off in the System Preference?

I disabled iCloud Drive because the process called "cloudd" was consuming huge CPU resource in Yosemite. However, I found that all my keyboard shortcuts disappeared after that. Is there any solution to sync keyboard shortcuts without iCloud?
