What must I check after I got my new rMBP 13"?

My friend wants to buy new rMBP 13" mid 2014 MGX72 in Malaysia. He's afraid of defects. So he needs advice on how to check whether his new rMBP 13" has problem or not. If it has, he must report it as soon as possible to the Apple Reseller where he bought it in Malaysia, before going home to Indonesia. Help?

Note that this post is basically for my friend. As for me, I'm planning to buy rMBP 15" mid/late 2015. I know this site is not for a question of which mac I should buy, but I asked about technical advice on how to check a new rMBP 13" after I got it so if it has any problem I can detect it and report it soon so I won't have any problems when I'm home.

What I currently know is only check whether the rMBP 13" display doesn't have dead pixel, check the battery, is it running up to around 9-10 hours as promised, calibrate it, uhm, what else? That's all I know. CMIIW.

Sorry my English. Feel free to edit this if you know what I mean.

Incoming call is not registered on iPhone if iPhone turns of before I pick up

The situation:

  1. iPhone is low on battery

  2. I receive incoming call

  3. I try to pick up and phone turns of during that moment

In this situation incoming phone number is not registered on the recent call list.

Is there a way to fix this?

How do i know a mac needs to restart?

Is there a way to figure out from a script whether a Mac needs to reboot? A file, the presence or contents of which i could monitor perhaps?

I'm looking for an equivalent to the file /var/run/reboot-required found on my Ubuntu boxen. My use case would be to centrally monitor my servers (and perhaps laptops) using Puppet, collectd or... well, something.

How can I hide spam emails in my inbox of OSX Apple Mail app?

I label my emails as spam or better "Junk email" in my iPhone and MBA but the emails continue to stay in my inbox. I want to get rid of them without removing them so I can later improve my spam filtering with SpamAssistant in my server. How can I hide spam emails in my inbox of OSX Apple Mail app?

Cannot connect to Apple TV

My Apple TV works perfectly as a stand alone machine. It plays the channels I want to watch. However, Neither my MacBook Air, My iPads, my iPhone 6 and my iMac will no longer connect to AirPlay. All these devices worked perfectly until recently, AirPlay was a wonderful method by which I could stream videos to the Apple TV for watching on the 'big screen'.

Now, none of them connect. they are all on the same wifi network and 'AirPlay' is switched on on the Apple TV. Using the iPad, the 'Airplay' button is there, when I choose to play to Apple TV, the iPad says"PLaying on Apple TV" but nothing happens on the TV. Both the MacBook Air and the iMac are unable to connect to Apple TV. The AirPlay button is there, and when I choose Apple TV, after some moments I get a message "Unable to connect to Apple TV" Even though this says unable to connect to Apple TV, when I use iTunes to stream MP4 files, I go into the menu on Apple TV, Choose 'Computers' and I can access the MP4 files and they play perfectly.

But, as the computers 'cannot connect' I am unable to Mirror my computer screen, hence, I cannot use 'Beamer' to stream other file types such as .avi or .mkv from them to the TV. Also, when I stream live TV from my iPads, they say "Playing on Apple TV", but the Apple TV does not respond by playing the files.

I have reset the Apple TV twice and everything is as should be as far as set up is concerned, and I have checked everything I can think of on the computers and have checked all the settings.

What's gone wrong? I hope someone has an idea that I haven't already tried over the last 5 days of searching for answers on the internet and checking settings on all my devices.

How to decrease trackpad tracking speed on demand?

I'm using separate magic trackpad and (still, but that's not a requirement) Mac OS 10.9.5. I'm looking for some convenient and free way to decrease tracking speed on demand, for example via additional gesture or a keystroke.

I'm a developer, so, quite often I need to precisely move cursor one-two pixels aside while inspecting layouts, picking colors, moving panels here there and currently with magic trackpad that's terrible.

One of good options I'm looking looks like this: scrolling while holding a key produces slow and precise mouse pointer movement.

Tried to search, but not very successfully:

  • MagicPrefs: nothing like that, but, seems some plugin may achieve that.

  • SmoothMouse: nope.

  • SteerMouse: paid, does not support Apple Magic Trackpad.

  • ControllerMate: paid, looks like this is what I need, but I didn't manage to achieve what I want (too much time spent).

  • iMouseFix: nope.

As an option I could make some script up and bind it to the keys, which will change tracking speed or an entire app, but I'm not sure about that and consider that as a last resort. Don't like additional mouse option for precise movements, also I rarely use macbook's built-in trackpad, so I need something universal.

Dotted underlines in Word for Macbook users 2011

I am doing an editorial job and need to underline some words with red dotted underlines. How do you do this using Word for Mac users? The version I have is 2011, on a Macbook with Snow Leopard software.

Many thanks
