Citizen Erased: My Mac deleted my user account! Please help

The last time I used my user account I was browsing the net and sending an email with the built in Mail app. But I accidentally unplugged the Mac and when it came back, my user account wasn't on the Login screen anymore. I tried using this guide: http://ift.tt/1j3pwLZ

And after trying to recreate the account, nothing happens. So I turn to the Console log to see what's going on, and I get this: console log

It's like OS X blacklisted my username or something like that. Also, I noticed was that my user account folder no longer has a pretty house on it and instead has that ugly default folder icon.

/users/ folder

Anyway, even though this is an old PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.5 on it I hope you'll be able to help me out claim my account back.

iPhone sent photo

So I received a photo from a friend and I have done this with 3 different photos 3 different friends where I saved the photos weeks after they sent them to me and they show up in a photo stream from a week or month earlier. I am wondering does the iPhone save the photos to your photo stream of when they actually took the photo? Is that why I am getting one showing up in my june photo stream that was sent to me in October?

iPod touch 4 dual boot

I would like to be able to dual boot an iPod touch 4th generation on iOS 6.1.6. I know that openiboot and bootlace aren't compatible though. Hacker Winocm has triple booted his iPad 2 so I know it's possible but exactly how difficult would this be? I know a little Python, a good amount of Objective-c, and I am going to learn hexadecimal and assembly soon. What else would I need to know? Thanks

iOS cracking scripts

I am jailbroken running iOS 8.1 and was wondering if there are any working app cracking scripts similar to clutch or rasticrac. So far, the ones I have tried do not fully work on iOS 8.1. I do have experience so I do not mind advanced methods. I also do not want an illegal App Store that allows you to download IPAs. Also, are there any free tools for Macs that I could use? Thank you

iPhone 4s update from iOS 6 to iOS 7

I have an iPhone 4s still running on some version of iOS 6. Is it possible to upgrade to only iOS 7.1.2 without going to iOS 8? Apple stopped signing iOS 7.1.2, which makes me wonder if I can do this.

Thanks!

SSD totally bricked after installing in different laptop

I've never had this issue before:

I had an OWC ssd in my 2009 macbook pro, and I put it into a 2008 aluminum macbook. It worked perfectly. Then, I took it out and put it back in my macbook pro, but the computer wouldn't start up. It wouldn't even get past the grey screen (not even an apple logo!). Now it won't work in either computer.

I've tried starting up in recovery mode: nada.

I put it in my external HD enclosure and connected it to my macbook air. Nothing is showing up in the disk utility or in disk warrior (and yes, the enclosure works OK, I checked the SATA cable, etc, etc). I'm at a loss for what to do next.

Macbook Pro Retina Not Working on Battery, but fully charged and cycle count is low

I have an MBPR (15in) that is about 18 months old (no AppleCare). The battery has only 331 cycles on it, and Apple states it should last for 1000. The battery is fully charged, at 100%.

If I remove the power cord, the machine dies, like the battery is dead -- it completely dies, no sleep.

Consequently, if it is powered off and I turn it on, and then unplug it pretty quickly (before much s/w is loaded) it dies, just the same -- no sleep.

The light is green on the charger and the battery status shows 100%, but it also says it needs to be replaced. I tend to think the battery itself does not need to be replaced yet, but that something is preventing the machine from using the battery.

In About this Mac reports:

  • 7377 charge remaining (100%),

  • fully charged: yes,

  • charging: no,

  • full charge capacity: 7450.

Does anyone have any knowledge of issues with this? I hate to have to sink money in this very well cared for MBPR.

FWIW I have tried an SMC reset and PRAM reset, a few times, ea.

Ipad 2 no longer pairing on bluetooth

FileVault Stuck on Pause

I just got a new 13" rMBP with Yosemite installed. I chose to enable FileVault when I set the machine up.

Now, several days later, an app called "Reverting from FileVault" shows on the list of apps consuming a lot of energy.

I check FileVault in System Preferences, and it says "Encryption paused," followed by "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Connecting the power adapter makes no difference, even though the machine recognizes that it's charging.

I've found several threads describing this problem, but no solutions.

I've tried clearing the PRAM, going into Recovery Mode, repairing the disk and repairing permissions. Nothing has worked. I can't stop FileVault from Terminal, and when I try to enable it, it says it's already on:

$ fdesetup status
FileVault is On.
Encryption in progress: Pending

$ sudo fdesetup disable
Password:
Enter a password for '/':
...

$ fdesetup status
FileVault is On.
Encryption in progress: Pending

$ sudo fdesetup enable
Error: FileVault is already On.

Any suggestions? The machine is brand new, so there isn't a HUGE amount of data on it (nor are there any Time Machine backups), but I'd like to avoid having to wipe the drive.

If there's nothing I can do, does Apple have a history of issuing hotfixes for issues like this?

EDIT: FWIW, one of the threads has the following post:

Talked to Apple Support and they told me that it is a known issue and will be addressed in future updates or patch. Only thing you can do is wait for fix or reinstall OS X.

After how many app download is it any chanche to get revenue from ads / banner?

I put a banner to my app, submitted to App Store, but yet ads in my app get no visibility, I guess due to low market share, download rate. Do you know a rough threshold count of downloads from where I can expect ads income?

Install Mavericks on second partition in Yosemite-only system?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (so yes it's capable of Mavericks). I have only Yosemite currently installed on the drive. I have an app I need to run that does not seem to properly support Yosemite, so I want to install Mavericks on a second partition to setup a dual boot environment.

I do not presently have access to a spare USB drive that can be erased to create installation media nor do I have any blank double-layer DVD discs.

I have already used disk utility to resize and create my extra partition. However, I am not able to actually start the OSX Mavericks installation. The error is "This copy of the Install OS X application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X."

I need to get this done for a college project due in the next couple of days and won't have access to a flash drive that can be erased and used for install media within that time. Is there anything I can do, say from the terminal, to force the installation of Mavericks to proceed onto the second partition?

MAC: Icons only work on symbolic links when locked and are not updatable - need method for unlocking for non-privileged user

My client has a product based on Excel Spreadsheets which require periodic downloads. The product has been working well on PCs for several years, but there has been a lot of requests to have the product run on Macs as well. We have almost finished the porting process, but have run into an annoying problem when trying to put a link on the desktop to a file that can be deleted and recreated.

To work around the problem of 'hard' links we are using a symbolic link that is created during the installation process:

ln -s "/Applications/Mortgage Mentor/MortgageMentorUpdate.app" "/Users/$USER/Desktop/Mortgage Mentor Update"

We then put a 'nice' icon on it:

"/Applications/Mortgage Mentor/SetFileIcon" -image "/Applications/Mortgage Mentor/folder-icon.icns" -file "/Users/Shared/Mortgage Mentor"

The problem at this point is that the link does not show the Icon that has been assigned to it. This icon only appears when you Lock the file:

chflags uchg "/Users/$USER/Desktop/Mortgage Mentor"

Once this command is executed, we get a nice desktop icon. However, the link is now locked. If we run our network update program, which downloads and then replaces each of the files, including the main Mortgage Mentor.xlsm file, the symbolic link now points to the file in the trash, not in the original directory. So, our network update program tries to run a script to delete the symbolic link and recreate it - but that link is now locked and the script exits with an error and does not complete. So, we add a

sudo chflags nouchg "/Users/$USER/Desktop/Mortgage Mentor"

to the script, which also immediately breaks because there is no way for the script to talk to the user and request permission to run as it was launched as a sub-process by our update program.

2 things could be used to solve our problem: 1) Find a way to keep the symbolic link from following the file into the trash. We want it to ignore the deleted file and just point to the location where the replacement file is dropped. 2) find a way to turn off and then on again the Locked flag in the sub process without requiring super-user privileges, or even to do it within our program (using Mono).

My client does not want to have to prompt the user for special privileges to update files that they already own.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks, Neil

From Yosemite to Mavericks

I originally bought my Mac mini on Yosemite. I wanted to downgrade to mavericks, and on this website I read that if I went into core services and changed my SystemVersion.plist from 10.10 to 10.8 and download Mavericks from the AppStore, I would have mavericks. Guess what? App Store doesn't even work! All of my apple apps don't work because it says I need 10.10, including text edit. Can someone please help me? I even called apple and they didn't know what to do. HELP!!!!

Internal SSD not found when installing OS X

I just upgraded my Mac Mini Late 2012 to an SSD. Now, I wanted to boot from my bootable USB and then install Mac OS X to my SSD but it does not find the SSD when I want to select it. The SSD is from here.

Any advises?

Can I use dual 4k Dell P2815Q monitors on the Retina MacBook Pro (late 2013) with Yosemite at full resolution?

  1. Will this monitor plug-and-play with Yosemite on this MacBook model without having to install Xcode and mess around with creating custom settings?

  2. Can I have two of these plugged into this MacBook and run them both at 4k (at either 30Hz or 60Hz)? - I don't care so much about refresh rates as I do about resolution. I won't be gaming or watching movies on them.

Is there any way to use Preview to view files on another server?

Crucial M500 480gb SSD Replacement for stock HDD on Late 2011 MacBook Pro keeps freezing

First, I apologize for the length of this. I want to make sure I get all the facts out so that hopefully I can get some help. There is s TL;DR version below if you don't want the blow-by-blow edition.

My wife has been complaining about the speed of her Late 2011 MacBook Pro for the last year. I finally broke down and decided to give it a boost by upping the memory to 16gb (from the stock 4gb) and replacing the 500gb HDD with a 480gb Crucial M500 SSD.

My plan was to simply swap the drives, replace the memory, then boot to System Recovery Mode (Cmd - R at boot) and do a fresh install. I started the Disk Utility and created a new partition on the SSD no problems. I think picked the option for "Fresh Install". The first thing I noted was that it wanted to install Lion instead of Mavericks, which was on it, but figured whatever...it would update as soon as I get things rebuilt. I would then use a Roswell SATA-to-USB cable to mount the old drive and do a "recovery" of all her old date. The system did the initial download as part of the System Recovery Mode, then said it was rebooting to complete the install. At this point, I got the white Apple screen with the spinner...but it kept spinning, and spinning, and spinning. No indication it was actually doing anything, just spinning.

I let it run for another hour or so, then finally killed it by holding the power for 10sec. I tried the install again, but again I get the white screen with the spinner. This happens at least one more time.

Finally I try a different approach. Once again, I boot to System Recovery Mode. I again erase the drive, but this time in Disk Utility I try to do a "Recovery" from the old drive to the new drive. I hit the 'Go' button, it says "Setting up..." for about 10min (I believe it was trying to calculate the time), then pops up with an estimated time to restore the new SSD from the old as 7hrs. I checked it a few times before bed to make sure the progress was moving, then went to bed at about 10% or so.

This morning, however, when I checked the status I find that it's still stuck at like 15%. The system is not locked up: I can move the mouse, drag the window, etc. I hit Cancel on the restoration, and it says it's cancelling, but nothing.

Another 20-30min later it still says "Cancelling...". So, once again I force-cycle the power, and once again I hit Disk Utility. This time, however, when I try to erase the disk, it gets to EXACTLY the same spot the restoration got stuck at, then pauses. I left it there when I left for work, but I have a feeling something is fishy that is causing it to do this.

TD;DR

I am trying to replace my wife's HDD with an SSD. I performed the following attempts using System Recovery to no avail:

  1. Fresh install of Lion...seemed to get stuck after reboot

  2. Restore using Disk Utility from the old HDD to the new SSD...stuck at 15%-ish, and now the drive will not erase (gets stuck at 15%-ish)

Question

Is the drive just bad or is there some other technique/process I need to use in order to change the drive out other than what I have tried?

Why does memory appear near full even after upgrade?

I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro from 4GB to 8GB. Before the upgrade, I looked in the Activity Monitor and it said that it was using almost 3.98GB of 4GB (I'm a web developer, so I usually have lots of apps open.) Then after the upgrade Activity Monitor shows that it is using about 7.50GB of 8GB (with the same apps opened.) The upgrade improved the performance of the Mac, it is surprisingly faster than before, but I was hoping to see more memory available after this upgrade.

Thanks for your help!

What characters might be used to substitute for colon in folder names using a time-of-day?

It is often convenient to name files and folders with a date and time, such as standard ISO 8601 format: 2014-12-10T22:35:28.460Z.

Unfortunately, the Mac’s HFS+ file system uses the COLON as a path separator just as Unix-like OSes use SOLIDUS / (slash) and Microsoft OSes use REVERSE SOLIDUS \ (backslash). All three characters must be avoided when naming a file or folder for compatibility.

What character might be commonly used as a replacement for the COLON?

  • Using a HYPHEN - makes it tricky to programmatically reverse the conversion to standard format.

  • Similarly, the using FULL STOP . (period) makse reverse conversion difficult as they will be misinterpreted as fractional seconds.

External Display Brightness, Contrast and Color are Terrible

I have a late 2014 13" Retina MBP. It's connected to a 24" Philips 246EL Display by using an Apple Mini DV to DVI adaptor.

The brightness and contrast on the external display are terrible, and no amount of fiddling with the settings seems to help.

I've tried using Displays > Color > Calibrate, but no matter how I set monitor Brightness and Contrast, I cannot calibrate them correctly.

Previously, I had used the same external display with an early 2011 15" (non-retina) MBP, and it never seemed this bad.

How to determine what files enter recent items OS X?

I was wondering if there was a way of exerting more control over the Apple Menu's 'Recent Items' dropdown item. I have searched all over google, to now avail. This is essentially my problem:

I wish for files that when opened in a certain program, not get logged onto Recent Items.

I understand that possibly the way that the files are logged is not app specific, so perhaps there would be other ways to tinker? e.g. files opened in a certain directory don't get listed when opened, or files with certain extensions or strings in their filename?

Hope what I'm asking is clear, Many thanks, B

Where does Yosemite store cache files for exchange accounts?

My problem is, that the server of my exchange account crashed today and it is maybe not possible to restore the database of the server.

Are there any files on my Mac or in my TimeMachine BackUp, where for example my notes, or calendar entries are stored for offline use?

I only found the stored data from my iCloud account in the folder: user / Library / Containers / com.apple.Notes / Data / Library / CoreData / ExternalRecords / B059E164-CC3A-44ED-AB92-C703BDD09455 / IMAPNote / _records /...

Restore a lost partition from degraded software mirror RAID

I used to store my valuable files on Apple software RAID (mirror). Recently one disk has failed and the mirror became degraded.

I rebuilt the mirror using new drive, following this guide, but seems like there are no partitions on it.

I believe the data on the healthy drive is not corrupted. What programs should I use at this point to retrieve if not the lost partition, but data?

Viewing VGA to USB input on a MacBook Pro

I want to use my MacBook as a monitor and keyboard and mouse for my Windows PC. Basically I want to use my laptop as a remote control for a headless Windows 7 PC without lag. I want to play some Steam game that is very graphic card intensive. I do not want to use a slow Wi-Fi connection to do this.

One option would be to just display the GUI of the PC on my laptop via a VGA to USB adapter. Another option would be to use an Ethernet connection from my PC to my Mac laptop using VNC however I do not know about the speeds.

How do I sync music from library onto new phone?

I bought an iPhone 6+ and want the music from my library to reside on the phone. How do I get it to sync and actually download the music to the phone? I do not use the iCloud for backup.

Link rather than import images in Keynote

I'm creating an interactive prototype in Keynote using images of views as slides and add clickable areas which link to other slides. So far so good. But I've found that the maintenance of the prototype is quite cumbersome since I seem to have to re-add all images that I adjust, in other words: images that I've added to the Keynote document aren't updated when I make changes in the original image file.

Does anyone know how to get around this?

Are symlinks recognized by iCloud?

I would love to keep all of my personal files (docs, photos, videos, music) in my user folder where they're supposed to be, and still have them on iCloud for my mobile devices. I thought of putting symlinks that point to the user folders in the iCloud folder in ~/Library/Mobile Documents. Does anyone have authoritative information to tell if these symlink targets will be synced with iCloud similar to the way symlinks can be used with Dropbox? Thanks.

Finder and Dock issues in OSX 10.10.1

I have been having issues with Finder and the Dock ever since the upgrade to 10.10.1 (I can't be certain they weren't there in 10.10).

I am unable to drag items off of the Dock (to remove them). I also can't drag items from the download stack that I have beside my trash can in the dock. Dragging the item simply does nothing. If I drag it somewhere and release the mouse button, it just opens the app/file.

And in Finder, I am only able to drag and move/copy 86 items. I can select more but when I drag them to a new folder or other location the most that will get moved is 86.

I have confirmed the issue with a friend but have several other friends for which everything is working fine.

I have a mid 2012 retina MBP and my friend has an older (2010 i think) non retina MBP. I have restarted several times and tried to find any sort of setting that might be turned off. Googling doesn't seem to turn up any information either. So I am mostly wondering if anyone else is having this issue and/or if it is an OSX bug or how to fix it.

Thanks.

What to do when I cannot boot the Recovery partition?

tl;dr

When I hold 'alt' during boot, and select the Recovery partition, the computer displays the bright grey screen with an Apple logo, and a spinning work indicator. But after a few hours nothing has yet happened.

Running an updated Yosemity install

Long version

I was working on a rake script which tried to create a directory relative to my home folder. I used a ~ in the script, where I should have used the $HOME environment variable.

No big deal, that just created a folder named ~ in my current working directory. Of course this shouldn't be there so I deleted it with

rm -rf ~

Bad idea! After about a second, due to the fact that the operation wasn't complete, that I had tried to delete my home folder.

I didn't assume that this should be a big deal. Just restore my home folder from a Time Machine backup - the only work I had done since the last backup was already pushed to a remote git repository.

Well, restoring my home folder from a Time Machine backup resulted in an error code, so I created a new administrative user, logged in as that user and tried again.

Still error messages, so I opened a terminal, and got the message that '/bin/bash' did not exist !!!

So my command apparently destroyed essential system software. How should that be possible when I wasnt sudo'ing anything?

So my next plan was to recover the computer from said Time Machine backup. So I held the alt key pressed during startup (where the background is now black, instead of the usual light grey), I select the Recovery partition. And then nothing happens.

Booting normally into OSX doesn't work either. I get the normal boot progress bar (but with a black background instead of a grey) - but it freezes about 1/3 way in.

How do I get to a point where I can recover from my Time Machine backup.

Is it just trying to download software from Apple? Do I just have to be patient?

Photoshop locks up and crashes the system

I have a problem where Photoshop CC 2014 (fully updated, legal copy) is completely locking up the system, I have to do a hard reset.

After a reboot, I got the following error message:

Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled enhancements which use the graphics hardware.

Check the manufacturer's website for the latest software.

Graphics hardware enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.

My system:

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)

  • 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

  • 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

Any ideas what can be causing this?

Apple Game Center

My son started clash of clans a little over a year ago, I then started playing on the same device. I am now trying to link a device(which appears to be very simple) but when I go to link a device and click this is the old device it tells me that my village isn't attached to the game center( I'm assuming his old village is the one attached in Game Center). I was going to just create a new game center but I can't access anything in our Game Center, when I click on view account it thinks for a short moment and then the screen comes up blank. What do I do I need to get my village stored instead of the old one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AppleScript executes itself again after a reboot it initiated. How to avoid that?

I have a shell script that is run by an AppleScript app. That shell script restarts the machine at some point with shutdown -r now.

How can I avoid having the AppleScript application automatically launch itself again after the reboot?

  • The app is not included in the startup items

  • The app is launched again just like any other open app when the shell script restarts OS X

The sequence is this:

  1. I double click on the AppleScript app

  2. AppleScript launches a shell script in Terminal

  3. The shell script, at some point, reboots the system

  4. The AppleScript app starts again after the reboot

Photoshop CC is creating problematic JPEGs that make Preview.app lose its mind

I have a 2013 Retina MBP on Yosemite, with a licensed copy of Photoshop CC. My problem is, Preview cannot deal with JPEGs I am creating in Photoshop. Preview is really sluggish when it loads the images, and is unable to resize them. It appears to do so, but when the image is saved and closed, the resolution is not modified correctly and the file size stays oddly large.

Here is one such image: http://ift.tt/12sTk2M

(make sure to download full 6.6 MB file, not the thumbnail)

Something about these JPEGs is making Preview lose its mind, but I'm not sure what it is. I suspect something related to the format of the file but I don't know how to go about analyzing it.

Note that if I re-save the JPEG in GIMP, Preview is subsequently able to manipulate it normally.

upgrade an old iMac

I have an old iMac 24 2.8 of 2008. Is it a good idea to upgrade to Yosemite?

Now it has Mac OS 10.9.5. It has 1TB hard drive, 4GB Ram. Will the upgrade make it go slower? Is it safer to keep the old opeating system?

Gatekeeper Issues with Eclipse (running CloverETL) after Installing Mac OS X Yosemite

Right after upgrading my Mac to OS X Yosemite, I'm having trouble using the program CloverETL (which runs off of Eclipse 4.3).

After I start the Eclipse platform, I am receiving a Gatekeeper error for an unidentified developer which reads: "CloverETL Designer.app can’t be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed”

Any idea how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Install and import site-packages for Python 2 and 3 on Mac

I installed brew and then

brew install python
brew install python3

Install flask with pip

pip install flask

Try

python -c 'import flask'

But I got exception

ImportError: No module named flask

Set and export PYTHONPATH

export PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages

So far so good. But when I tried to install a package with pip3 for Python 3, I got error message

Your PYTHONPATH points to a site-packages dir for Python 2.x but you are running Python 3.x!
PYTHONPATH is currently: ":/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages"
You should `unset PYTHONPATH` to fix this.

How to use site-packages without the PYTHONPATH trick to make both pip and pip3 usable and both Python 2 and Python 3 able to import site-packages?

Deleting photos from iPhone which are already synced with my Mac

How do I delete synced photos from my iPhone when the same photos are already deleted from my iMac and also the trash?
