My iMac runs Mac OS X Yosimite 10.10.1
I accidentally had "Remote Login" enabled in my Mac's system preferences, so the sshd was running.
I just notified in Little Snitch's network monitor window, that it logged about 90 connections from different servers to sshd. I checked the ip addresses on http://ipinfo.io and all the logged ip addresses are located in China, Hong Kong and South Korea.
It seems to be pretty bad.
I looked around a little bit in the available network protocol of Little Snitch and found out, that the ip addresses appearing in the sshd log also appeared in the logs of several other processes, including
all with user "root" (including the sshd logs). I thought user root was disabled by default on Mac OS X, but this might all be results of the hack...
So the question now is how to proceed?
I use a cable modem for internet connection (FritzBox 6360). UPnP is switched on (and I use this feature for several apps). There where several mappings to port 22. I removed all these.
But probably this won't be enough.
Since my computer definitely is compromised I don't really trust it anymore. What should I do now? Erase the whole thing and re-install all new? That would be a huge amount of time going down the drain.
And what's about the DDService64d access? Is my Drobo 5N also compromised? Is there a way to check this?
My TimeMachine backup is also saved on the Drobo 5N, so even if I decide to erase the computer and start all over again, how can I be sure, that it isn't compromised again by the TimeMachine backup on the Drobo?
Any advice?
I'm running some cron jobs on my machine and every time I fire up a terminal session I'm getting a 'You have mail.' message. Any way to turn this off?
I get desktop notifications from Google Chrome from various websites, one of them being Gmail. I use Checker Plus for Gmail Chrome extension which takes over Gmail notifications.
When a new email notification arrives from Gmail Checker Plus I can action it 'Mark as read' or 'Delete'.
Is there any way to use a keyboard shortcut to action these notifications?
We have started to replace hard drives in some MacBook Pros and Airs that are about 3 years old.
We found out the hard way that FileVault encryption requires a recovery parition.
If we install Mountain Lion or Mavericks from the USB installers that we have created, we do not get the option to create the recovery partition.
So far, we have only found 2 methods:
1) Internet Recovery - This takes a long time and usually install Lion, which then requires an upgrade to Mavericks. After upgrading Mavericks, the recovery partition will reinstall Lion if the recovery partition is used to reinstall Mac OS X.
2) Take it to the Apple Store - This is not always practical in a business environment.
Is there any other way to do this?
I recently bought a new iMac and installed Yosemite on it, but for some reason whenever I try to update I just get this message:
"[Name of App] was purchased using the App Store on another computer. To use [Name of App] on this computer, sign in using the Apple ID and password used to purchase it."
Nope. My Apple ID remains the same as it was on my old iMac, and I don't remember ever having another one. If anybody knows how to sort this out, I'd be very grateful as I haven't been able to update anything in about three months.
My brother and I both got iPhones and we both had the same Apple id and gc account and he just downloaded COC but it automatically connected to mine, how does he start his own separate one without making new accounts because were both under my moms account
I plan to make a trip up to the apple store tomorrow. I need them to put in a new hard drive in my Macbook Pro mid-2010 15". Do I need to make an appointment with them? or can I just show up and drop it off with them?
Thanks
As far as I can tell, DX as a software-component is tightly wound to Windows as for hardware-acceleration and is provided as a set of DLLs and a runtime system for applications that depend on it; however, OS X uses GPUs that support DX. The problem seems to not lie in the inability on the hardware side, but on the non-existent runtime on the software, and the inability for winding between applications and a DX runtime system.
OS X uses OpenGL only for hardware-acceleration, so if my cards are right, isn't it possible to reverse engineer DX's COM interface and re-compile it back as an Objective-C interface with static or dynamic linkage and enable the runtime to work on OS X, along with re-writing device drivers to enable mapping to GPU address space to implement the features of DirectX operations on the GPU (shading, GPGPU, etc.)? I know it sounds crazy, but I can't find any way to believe this to be impossible. Most GPUs today support DirectX.
I have a 2008 Mac Pro running Yosemite. I just purchased a solid state hard drive which I want to become my boot drive. I do not want to transfer the data from the original boot drive to the solid state drive; I just want to be able to access the data on it.
Is there a way to move it to another slot and not have it run as a boot drive, so I may access the contents?
and/or
Is there a way to essentially turn it into an external hard drive, so I can easily access the contents?
Thank you
In the finder I made hidden directories visible. The odd thing is that any system directory (IE one whose name starts with a ".") I can't open them by double-clicking on them. Instead I have to right click and and select to open in a new tab. Is there a way to change this behavior?
I'm using Mavericks, not sure if this issue is specific to Mavericks or not.
Is there any way of Filtering out messages from OS X system log?
I am looking through the log on an old MacBook running Lion.
This has an error message every 10 seconds from an obsolete service.
I had an existing USB drive which was already encrypted (ad the file-system level) and then I opened Time Machine and also selected "Encrypt backups" when choosing the disk and now I have a very slow progress bar showing "Preparing disk for decryption". I can't cancel it. Why would it be decrypting anything?
I purchased a used iphone and now I cannot transfer my information to it because it still has the former owner's Apple ID.
I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to keep receiving Mail notifications even whilst the app is quit. Just like how Messages notifications still come up even if the app is quit. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
I've got a Macbook Pro Retina (with the PCIe drive ‘blade’, instead of a traditional 2.5" laptop drive). I've recently upgraded the internal drive from 500GB to 1TB, and dd
'd the old drive over the new one to retain my partition setup and Bootcamp partition.
Unfortunately, this didn't go well: for whatever reason, OS X wouldn't recognize, once I'd booted up on the new 1TB drive, that there was 500GB of new space available. It was showing up in Disk Utility as greyed-out space.
To aid in debugging this, I wiped out the Bootcamp partition entirely (I have backups. I intend to restore that later, once I've got the drive fixed up from within OS X.); and eventually, after getting fed up trying to get diskutil cs resizeStack
to work, I diskutil cs revert
'ed the boot volume entirely.
Now I have this situation:
> diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk0
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Fannie's HD 499.4 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
> diskutil cs list
No CoreStorage logical volume groups found
> diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 limits
For device disk0s2 Fannie's HD:
Current size: 499.4 GB (499418034176 Bytes)
Minimum size: 330.0 GB (329959456768 Bytes)
Maximum size: 499.4 GB (499418034176 Bytes)
After trying to drag the single partition in Disk Utility from 500GB up to 1TB, and then clicking ‘apply’, the process appears to proceed, and complete; but as soon as the completion message appears in the bottom-right, the partition map reverts to what you see in the screenshot. It never succeeds in re-sizing to 1TB. (Here's the verbose log, along with some other details obtained from the command-line.)
(Attempting to do the same from the recovery partition's Disk Utility gives an ‘Error: could not unmount disk.)
At this point, all I want in the world, is to re-size the single partition on my drive from 500GB to fill the available 1TB of space. Once I succeed with this, I'll be able to convert it to a CoreStorage volume, encrypt it, partition for Bootcamp and such.
Please help!

I know that many of the directories in /System/Library/ have analogues in /Library/, and a fewer several have analogues in ~/Library/ as well. I also know that in at least some cases, when the system is looking for something that may be rooted in one of these Library directories, it looks in the analogous locations as well.
For example, an application may install a file in /Library/Application Support/A/B/, but have been just as happy to have installed it in ~/Library/Application Support/A/B/, and though there may be records of the location of every file the application installed, the system may not refer to them when looking for a file. In other words, it knows that any time it checks for anything rooted in System/Library/, it needs to look in the corresponding locations in /Library/ and ~/Library/.
Is that last statement really true? That in all cases, (or in almost all cases, with certain exceptions) when the computer looks in one of the three Library directories it looks in the other two as well? For example, can a user move something that was installed in /System/Libary/Extensions/ to an Extensions directory he creates in his home directory's Library/ and expect it to be loaded from there at login, the way that, say, a property list found in ~/Libary/LaunchAgents/ would have been found just as easily had it been located in /Libary/LaunchAgents/?
Similarly, I notice that some applications store frameworks, plugins, and so forth in directories rooted in those applications' bundles. Can files be moved between there and appropriately-named locations elsewhere without problem? In theory at least, is this the way the filesystem is designed to work?
What would be the best way to forbid Mac OS 10.10+ Launchd
to start a Bash script when a MacBook is in Power Nap (dark wake)?
Is there an elegant way to limit it only to "real wake", like:
<key>RunOnlyWhenInRealWake</key><true/>
?
I haven’t found anything specific in the Apple docs
I have a bash script which sometimes executes in Power Nap and has no time to finish before Mac OS goes back to sleep.
I’ve tried prepending a sleep 15
timer to the script… would like to avoid having to lengthen that to, say, 5 minutes.
Thanks!

When bluetooth is on, my battery drains quicker.
I have a fitbit flex, and i want it to periodically sync with my device.
I don't want to manually switch bluetooth on and off periodically.
Is there any way (including apps) that can enable bluetooth when the device is charging, but disable it when the charge cord is disconnected?
When a contact in my iPhone has multiple phone numbers how do I determine which number that person called me from? Short of asking them of course.
I have been moving received emails from the inbox to separate mailboxes (NOT smart mailboxes), by clicking on the email in the inbox and moving the cursor to the specific mailbox and dropping the email into it; it disappears from the inbox. Now that no longer works -- the email in the inbox does not move with the cursor into the specific mailbox, but stays in the inbox. What has gone wrong and how do I fix it?
Can anyone advise on how to stop this happening.
I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 on my mid 2010 MacBookPro 17" and recently, the external monitor attached to it goes black for a few seconds but then comes back to show the Desktop etc.
When I boot into WIndows 7 64 bit Pro (via Boot Camp) this never happens. So I don't think it's a hardware issue.
It also never happened with Mavericks.
It seems to have started recently in the last month, but I upgraded to Yosemite 3 months ago and didn't see it then.
Please advise.
I bought a Crucial SSD compatible with my MacBook Pro (late 2007) and an enclosure. To my frustration, it would not mount and I think the hardware may be defective.
Sometimes, I get it to mount and will stay there but then suddenly disappear.
How can I get my Mac to recognize this new hard drive?
I have Yosemite, and my Keychain Access only shows the login keychain, giving me no option to switch between keychains.
As you can see, my sidebar on the left is missing. I try toggling it with ⌘+K, but to no avail.
Pressing that button repeatedly, thereby supposedly hiding and showing the keychain sidebar, doesn't do anything.
What might be the problem, and how can I fix it?
I'm thinking of a way to easily switch browser or simply open pages in Chrome by using the share sheet.
Would it be possible for an app to create an icon in the share sheet (either in the apps row or actions row) that opens Chrome or Safari?

I was wondering if it would be possible to create a line separator for the finder app, just like the one found next to the trash can?
The only behaviour difference that I'd like is for the line to display to the right of the finder app, not left.
I've done a lot of googling with no luck, I can only find option to create transparent seperations:
Using:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{ "tile-type" = "spacer-tile"; }'
killall Dock
Is anyone aware of how to do this?
Since updating the Yosemite, my time capsule does not mount. if i reboot it, it does but then unmounts. I cannot see it in airport utility either to check if the firmware is up to date. finder window does not show it. on a somewhat similar note, my printer behaves the same way.
How can I permanently disable the startup sound (or chime) in Yosemite?
(I am using a late-2014 13" macbook pro)
I already tried several options found here and there :
installed StartNinja.app => did not work
installed Auto-Mute.app => did not work
tried to install the old StartupSound prefPane => did not work
tried the command "sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80" => volume does not change (I also tried other values than 80, such as 00, 01, or nothing)
NOTE: I know that it is possible to mute the next startup sound by turning the volume down, but this is not a permanent solution.
When I charge my MacBook the battery goes only up to 99% and doesn't reach 100%. Is this something to worry about and if yes, how do I fix it?
When I sync my iOS device via iTunes, .ipa files are copied into:
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications
The apps on my device are a mixture of apps installed from the public app store and 'in house' (enterprise) apps installed 'over the air'.
There is not a one-to-one correspondence between files in the Mobile Applications folder and apps on my device (taking into account that the 'default' iOS apps do not appear as .ipa files). There are more apps on the device then .ipa files on my Mac. I >think< this is because some of the apps were installed from .ipa files with the same name and iTunes will not over-write any files in the Mobile Applications folder.
Is there a way to interrogate an iOS device to find out the name of the .ipa file associated with each app currently on the device?
I bought a Crucial SSD compatible with my MacBook Pro (late 2007) and an enclosure. To my frustration, it would not mount and I thought the hardware was defective.
However, there was a reason why the USB cable that came with the enclosure had two ends.
The second and thinner part of the cable is needed for power supply. This was obvious to the IT folks but had mystified me.

The trackpad on my mac book pro (mid 2012), isn't functioning properly. Sometimes it behaves as though I'm holding down a click. For example when working with a text editor I move the mouse across the page and the editor selects the text I move across (without me clicking).
Sometimes it's not possible to click even right at the bottom of the track pad - it feels the same when you try to click right a the top of the track pad (i.e. there is no movement and no 'click' sound).
I've got Apple Care, but the error comes and goes so when I took it into the local repair centre they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. (It's an apple authorised repairs rather than an actual apple store).
Any suggestions what I can do? What might be causing this? How I can reproduce the fault for the repair guys?
I have many problems with my Mac OS X. The system is only reachable via SSH, but not with FTP and not with SMB. So I tried to concentrate on FTP, seems easier to debug and may be it's one problem for both services.
First I enabled ftpd with:
sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
Then I try to ftp. But nothing. I got the standard error: Operation timed out.
After that I tried it again and made a tcpdump on the MBP. Looks fine for me:
tdmacpro:~ root# tcpdump port 21
tcpdump: data link type PKTAP
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on pktap, link-type PKTAP (Packet Tap), capture size 65535 bytes
17:32:53.539323 IP 192.168.0.58.49191 > 192.168.0.2.ftp: Flags [S], seq 2091779555, win 65535, options [mss 1460,nop,wscale 3,nop,nop,TS val 271391148 ecr 0,sackOK,eol], length 0
So the packets are reaching the MBP, but it did not answer.
After that I created a new virtual machine on my MBP to be sure that no switch makes any problem. Then the ftp client was in my virt. machine. But same error.
After that I tried a ftp user@MBP_IP, again same error.
After that I disabled fptd with
sudo -s launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
and started the ftpd manually with
/usr/libexec/ftpd -d -D -l -U
again the same problem.
Then I used another terminal and made a:
ftp localhost
This works. So I think the ftpd is configured properly. But I also controlled the ftp.plist with a new installation. The same content.
So is there anybody out there who has any further suggestions how to isolate the problem or how to solve it?
The way MS Word justifies text is to expands the text on each line by adding space between words and letters. The last line can look really ugly if it is pretty short. I.e. huge amounts of space between both words and letters.
On Windows, you can change this by setting Word to do Full Justification like WordPerfect 6.x for Windows. See http://ift.tt/1CzXlyo for details.
I cannot, however, figure out how to do this in Word 2011 for Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is there a way to use my voice to "press" a button on the numeric keypad during a phone call?
While some phone systems accept voice input, many still rely upon DTMF tones to be sent through during the call to select certain menu items. Many times, hands are unavailable, and being prompted for keypad input can be frustrating and dangerous.
Is there a way to, for example, have Siri listen to calls for commands like "Siri, press one five one pound", to send the DTMF codes "151#" on behalf of my hands?
