Finding the Safari settings (default search engine in particular) are stored

Recently, my default search engine changed (from Google to Yahoo) on Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari. I could easily changed the settings on Chrome and Firefox but for some reason it doesn't work with Safari.

In the Safari settings, I can change the default search engine to Google but it has no effect and Yahoo is always used. The issue has already been describe (but remained unsolved) here.

I tried going to my safari folder to find out where this information is stored but I don't really know what to look for. I have two folders named Safari:

Macintosh HD ▸ Users ▸ myname ▸ Library ▸ Caches ▸ Metadata ▸ Safari

Macintosh HD ▸ Users ▸ myname ▸ Library ▸ Safari

Do you know where I can find the file where the default search engine for Safari is stored?

Is there really a Mid 2014 13-inch Macbook Air?

According to Apple's How to identify your MacBook Air guide and a search for Macbook Air, they list only up to Macbook Air 13-inch, Early 2014. Similarly, so does EveryMac.com.

On the other hand, Engadget, Maclife, PCPro UK, Macworld, and Apple Insider all list the Mid 2014 version of the 13-inch Macbook Air in their reviews.

So before I buy a Macbook Air, I'd like to be 100% sure: Is there really a Mid 2014, 13-inch version of the Macbook Air?

New Mac Pro: Setup/Migration Assistant never finishes

I am trying to transfer my existing (Early 2008) Mac Pro to a new (refurb) 2013 Mac Pro. I'm still in "setup assistant" mode.

The amount of information being transferred is about 120Gb. I've tried transferring over a direct-connected Ethernet from Mac-to-Mac, as well as a brand new Time Machine backup to an external SSD connected via a Thunderbolt 1 breakout box.

Every time I try to transfer, the transfer makes it to the applications stage in a reasonable amount of time. The progress bar is almost full. Then it starts doing the applications. At first, the screen shows "Transferring Applications"/"Transferring files to support applications" pretty fast. Then it starts getting slower. And slower. All the while, the completion time (which was "about a minute" starts creeping up.) The first time I let it run all night. By morning it was saying there would be over 250 hours to completion.

I've tried it 4 times since then (including a complete system reinstall), and the same thing happens every time.

I feel like I'm down to 2 scenarios:

  1. The Mac Pro has a hardware issue. I've already run the hardware diagnostics, but nothing shows up. That being said, this is a refurb, it's possible something is wrong that only affects the new machine during long transfers.

  2. There's something in the backup or my applications setup that's causing the migration to get stuck in a loop. I've looked on the system drive for a log, but I haven't found one.

Here's where it gets really, really bizarre: I can't find any sign of the files transferred on the new Mac after I've stopped it. Not a single file appears on "Macintosh HD" on the new Mac.

Any ideas? Apple can't help me in the store until Monday, so I thought I'd ask here.

Is there anything on iOS that would cause your mail pulls to be set to manual?

I had a user come in where I work, and she said that she didn't get emails on her iPhone 4; she was running iOS7. I have an iPhone 5c, and I failed to receive emails around 8:30 PM today.

Her issue was that in her settings her mail had been set to only update manually. When I checked my phone, mine had also been set to manual. They're both phones that have been setup recently, is that the default setting? Or does it get set when it is placed on do not disturb? I'm really concerned about this because both of us missed important emails.

I removed Macintosh HD from backup disk how do I set it back?

I used 2 backup disks , Macintosh HD and Seagate . My macintosh was unable to perform a backup due to lack of space while my Seagate is unable to perform a backup until the first backup is complete. And I happened to remove Macintosh HD from the back up disk and I couldn't set it back because the name Macintosh HD is no longer under the "Available Disk" besides Seagate

How do I retrieve it back?

Bootcamp Windows USB Installation Errors

I am having issues installing Windows 7 through Bootcamp on my Mac. I want to be able to natively boot into my Windows installation so Parallels or VMWare will not work for me.

Here's what happens: I am able to partition the drive with the Bootcamp assistant, download the support software, and have the machine reboot into the Windows installer. Upon installation however, it seems like the USB controller for my MBP is not active and it's not able to find my installation media. The specific error that I'm getting is:

"A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB, or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now."

I made a video reproducing what happens: http://ift.tt/1yMtOye

Hopefully someone out there has run into this as well, I could really use some unblocking!

Preventing uBar from opening folders when clicking on a non-leaf element of the start menu

Is it possible to configure uBar so that clicking on a non-leaf element of the start menu does not open the corresponding folder?

E.g. if I click on "Applications" (a non-leaf element), it will open the application folder:

enter image description here

I've been using a bunch of start menus and it is the first time I see this behavior as the default setting. As a dwell clicking user it's very annoying.

iMovie does not open anymore - Console: -10699

I used iMovie a lot in the past days (Mac Mini Late 2012 - Mac OS X 10.10) but now if I press the icon in the dock it just does nothing. With spotlight search the same and opening it from the Finder makes no change either. I looked at the Console and the error was the following:

Console Error

In some other forum it said to deinstall and install the AdobeFlash but that did not work. Also I rebooted my Mac which made no change.

Has anyone got an idea how to fix it without reinstalling (if possible)?

Thanks in advance!

What SSD drives do NOT require TRIM support? (work around kext signing issue in Yosemite)

Unfortunately Apple has decided to create kext signing in Yosemite that creates issues for SSDs that require Trim support for optimal function and longevity. Whether this is vendor lock in or not, it's made upgrading a headache. If you bought a SSD that needs trim support such as the Samsung 840 Evo, there are many reported issues when performing PRAM reset and potential future system update conflicts in addition to the current security tradeoffs (see below). Trim Enabler author says using Trim Enabler by turning off kext signing is cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer.

Given my penchant for security and a preference for a headache free upgrade, I'm hoping for recommendations and a list of options of SSDs that don't recommend or require trim support. So far, I'm considering a Sandforce OCZ SSD to upgrade a late 2012 Mac Mini Server (because of this article). I'm not looking for opinions on whether Trim is necessary on drives that use it from manufacturers that include it. It is at least preferable. Also not looking for stories about not having had trouble after a Yosemite update on a Trim enabled device. Consider yourself lucky! (and don't reset NVRAM/PRAM or update OS without turning off Trim support).

tl;dr --

Some background if you're not already familiar with this issue:

3rd party SSDs for the most part DO NOT have trim support in Yosemite without kext signing security tradeoffs. Apple changed kext signing in OS X 10.10 such that kext singing must be disabled to use applications like Trim Enabler for trim support. So choices using Yosemite are, reduced security and potential system update issues; or, a SSD that doesn't require Trim support.

Yosemite kills third-party SSD support. This is not relevant if you're using an Apple installed SSD or SSD that doesn't require 3rd party trim support for optimal function. So, if you're using a DIY SSD, Trim support is tricky in Yosemite because of recent modifications to kext security management that affects Trim support. More about Trim Enabler for Mac.

::

About Trim in Yosemite In OS X 10.10 (Yosemite),

Apple has introduced a new security requirement called kext signing. (A kext is a kernel extension, or a driver, in Mac OS X)

Kext signing basically works by checking if all the drivers in the system are unaltered by a third party, or approved by Apple. If they have been modified, Yosemite will no longer load the driver. This is a means of enforcing security, but also a way for Apple to control what hardware that third party developers can release OS X support for.

Since Trim Enabler works by unlocking the Trim driver for 3rd party SSD’s, this security setting prevents Trim Enabler to enable Trim on Yosemite.

To continue to use Trim Enabler and continue to get Trim for your third party SSD, you first need to disable the kext signing security setting.

It is important to note that the kext-signing setting is global, if you disable it you should be careful to only install system drivers from sources that you trust.

Cheers!

In Finder, folder gets icon when given an extension .md, not with other extensions

By accident, I see a strange behaviour when creating a folder with an extension .md

It gets the the same icon as a file with extension .md (the MarkdownLife icon). For other file extension, I do not see this behaviour.

Is this a bug in Finder? Or markDownLife? Can other confirm this issue?

How to resolve lock up after mouse click?

I have a Mac Book Pro Retina display running OS X Yosemite and recently it has started acting up. Occasionally, upon a trackpad click, the machine stops responding, you can move the pointer, but the keyboard does nothing and clicking the trackpad does nothing. Holding down Command-Option-Esc does nothing. I'm only able to hold down the power button until it forces a reboot when this arises. Upon boot, the machine reports a graphics error:

A graphics problem has been detected.

Click "Report" to submit a report about this problem to Apple. This information is collected anonymously. You won't be contacted about this report.

I reported the issue.

I ran the Apple Hardware Test (not the extended version though), but no errors are reported.

How can I go about resolving this issue?

Inconvenient "read-only" finder mode

It's always bothered me that certain directories on OS X will open like this:

And others will open like this:

To my understanding this has to do with the permissions of the directory in question, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to have all directories open complete with the favorites bar and horizontal toolbar items, independent of write-ability.

I ask this because I used to (up until my most recent format) be able to double click on "Macintosh HD" and then navigate anywhere, either from root or from the sidebar shortcuts. For whatever reason Macintosh HD has been opening in restricted view as of my latest install.

Thanks in advanced.

Need help with the creation of an Apple-ID

I want to create an Apple-ID to download viber on my iPod.

Having selected "None" for the payment method and having inserted my address, it takes me out of there.

So, I don't get an email to verify the Apple-ID.

What's going on?

Can an application be auto-raised only if no other applications are focused?

So this is kind of a follow-up to How do I make OS X auto focus on the window in the screen the mouse moves into? because I'm having a different problem but looking for slightly different functionality.

The answer to that question with window management software that make raised a window into focus if the mouse was stopped over it for awhile. I don't like that solution at all, because I will typically have a few windows open on one monitor. If I start writing in one window, but my mouse is resting over the corner of another window farther back, I don't want it to be raised to the front.

I'm looking for a specific type of functionality, but I don't know if it's possible. My main issue is that I use jiTouch to give me tons of gestures; they're my primary mode of navigation on my Mac. One set of gestures allows me to move left and right through my tabs on Chrome. However, if I have Chrome in fullscreen on one monitor and the another apps with tabs focused on the other monitor, I often move my mouse over the Chrome window and shift between tabs in the focused application rather than Chrome.

Is there a way to Auto Raise a window only no other windows on that particular monitor are already in focus? That is, if I move my cursor from Chrome to an application on my other monitor, the application it lands on will come into focus; if I then hover over another application on the same monitor, it won't be autoraised.

Can't get my photos and videos to sync to new ipad from icloud

I got a new iPad mini with iOS8. Went through all the steps of activation and set up, apple ID etc. When prompted to restore from iCloud backup I chose the latest sync date. Finished the set up, but nothing was synced to my new iPad from iCloud except for some very recent pictures (2 days old). I have a huge photo and video collection all synced to iCloud. How come it didn't upload to my new iPad mini? Also, notes, contacts and imessages are not uploaded. And I can't receive imasseges to this ipad. Please help. I would appreciate a good advise on how to get data from icloud to new Apple device.

Issues with regions, Family Sharing, and iTunes credit

I have reached quite the unfortunate situation. I wanted to set up Family Sharing with a couple of users, but it iTunes tells me that I cannot do that because I have no payment method set up. I have iTunes credit, but apparently that's not good enough for Apple.

So I tried to add a credit card, but my account is a US account, so I couldn't add my Colombian credit card.

Then I tried to switch countries on my account, but I couldn't because I still had credit left, and apparently I have to use it all up (over 70 dollars at this point), before I can switch accounts.

All I want is to be able to set up Family Sharing. I'd rather not have two different accounts, because that would screw up all the new Continuity features, and I have been using the same account for years now.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Related (and not very encouraging) question: How can I change iTunes country of region when having some credit in my account?

Is there a way to measure data traffic from airport extreme?

We have lot of machines and occasionally experience slowness in some devices and wanted to see if it has something do with a device stealing the bandwidth. So I would like to measure the bandwidth utilized by each device.

Of course the other reason is our cable company. But I am afraid there will be revolt if I criticize them.

Google Maps for iPhone: how to disable "My location"?

So, I have Google Maps for iPhone (not the latest 4.0.x version, but the immediately previous one), and there's an arrow on the bottom right which enables "My location". When it's enabled (the arrow turns blue), the map is always centered in your current location…

…Except that sometimes it becomes stuck in that view. If I press on the arrow again, it enables the perspective view (similar to Apple Maps' aerial view). If I then hit it again, it goes back to the normal view… but "My location" is still enabled. If I drag to another place of the map, it immediately snaps back to my current location. It's extremely annoying, and the only way to "disable" it is to force-quit Google Maps and start again.

The weird thing is that this only happens sometimes, not every time I hit the arrow. What did I do wrong to enable that "feature" permanently, and how can i exit it in those cases?

Weird behaviour, During the night, Mac wakes every hour on it's own and does this - log attached, any idea why?

This pattern repeats once every hour?

Extend Netgear CG3100 Router network with Airport Express A1088

I have a Netgear router (CG3100) which is in my office and the base of our wireless network. A few rooms to the back of the apartment we have an Apple TV but the wireless connection here is flaky and keeps dropping out so I want to extend it.

I found an old AE base station (A1088) which is good and working - I understand though that this can't extend the Netgear wirelessly as you need all Apple products for that, but it can extend the network when connected by Ethernet.

Been searching for how to do this but can't find any info.. can anyone point me in the direction of some resources/how-to for this or let me know how to do it?

Cheers!

Removing all of an Application?

I am having an issue with the AppStore, and this is a related, but different question.

How do I find and remove all bits of the AppStore application? Besides the obvious app itself, sitting in the application folder, what prefs, helpers, etc are there that must be removed?

I ask this because when I removed the application file, deleted it, and reinstalled (from 10.6.6 updater image), the app icon showed a pending update the moment it launched, and it showed that I was signed in to my account. This implies there's more stuff I need to delete.

Sign in without credit card if the Apple id is already created

I have create my apple Id online using chrome and not from the App store or Itunes. Now when i try to download any free app from the app store it gives me a error that the Apple id i am using has never been used before. It takes me to a different page where i have to agree to the agreement and demands the credit card info on the next screen where the "none" option is not available.

Is it safe to set larger resolution on macbook pro than available resolutions with 3rd party tools?

I am using macbook pro 13in. with native resolution of 1280x800. I'm not very happy with this resolution. I want some more objects... i mean bigger resolution with smaller icons and more room for stuff. I downloaded a software switchresx and now i'm able to set it more like 1440x900 or even more..

My question is... is it safe to use this bigger resolution? does it effect on VGA card? or any other hardware issue??

Thanks

What are Alias and com.apple.LSSharedFileList.Binding data and how to create your own data ?

I guess they are icons or path to them, but how to generate these data strings, what are the specification for those icons and where do they have to be stored?

Can you set own prices when selling music on iTunes?

Can you set your own track/album prices when selling music on iTunes?

I was able to find answers on several forums (not on Apple's website/KBs), but they were contradictory (some say that it's $0.99 automatically, some that you can choose the price).

Can someone clarify this please?

Thanks!

Extreme slowness after upgrade to Yosemite; is my specific problem happening to others or just for me?

Like many, my Mac (iMac) has become extremely slow when performing certain operations and it's making it nearly impossible to get work done. I've been paying close attention trying to find some specific reason and finally think I've identified one issue that seems to cause much of the slowdown that I'm dealing with. Others' descriptions of their own slow machines after upgrading sound enough like mine to make me think what I've found may be more general so I'd like to find out if anyone can verify that their own cause is the same as mine.

It's easy to check for the basic problem and a little more work if the results of that make it worth looking further. I'll list the details here and explain below how and why I think this actually is a bug of some sort (rather than in a self-answer since until more people confirm the problem the answer isn't certain).

I want to know if this is an answer to some of the slow down issues with Yosemite and if fixing it as described helps your machine to run better:

  • Open the user Preferences file: /Users/<name>/Library/Preferences (or equivalently if looking in your own home directory, ~/Library/Preferences). There are many ways but the easiest is to open the user Library folder in the Finder by holding holding the Option key down and selecting Library from the Finder's Go menu. Then open the Preferences folder that is contained within the Library folder.

  • Sort the Preferences folder by clicking on the heading of the Size column. You may have to show the Size column first. If you're not sure how then use the View menu to Show View Options and work with the pop up settings; be sure to Sort and not Arrange the Size column and you may need to sort it so that the largest files are at the top of the list.

  • Now look at the large files (sizes greater than 1000KB (1MB) to see if there are any very large preference files (.plist file extension), especially any of the following two:

    • com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

    • com.apple.recentitems.plist

If so, then they may be causing much of the slowness so you may want to continue. If not then this probably isn't your speed problem.

  • If you know how to convert and view .plist files then you may want to read below and look for the particular symptoms described.

  • Or, you may want to just try moving the large files out of the Preferences folder and put them somewhere such as on your Desktop so that you can put them back if this doesn't help. It's fine to not put them back since OS X will recreate them when restarted though you may have to modify some of your Finder window preferences or arrangements if you do. You only need to remove the large com.apple… preference files; ignore any large third party files you see such as those from Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) -It's probably best to restart your Mac and see if it has helped with the slowdown issue. (If you know how to relaunch the Finder then that should work though I think I'd advise restarting to be sure.)

If this works for you (or doesn't) then if you can add a comment or add further details that you have discovered as another answer maybe we can start to unravel these bothersome problems. I know that this particular situation, when corrected as described really makes my machine feel good to use again.

I wrote the following explanation of the above earlier should it sound odd:

I've noticed that certain operations really slow things down and for me the most noticeable time is when I open up Finder windows or opening documents either from the Finder or from within an application, especially Preview. While looking through my user Preferences directory, ~/Library/Preferences I happened to do a Quickview on the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist preference file and while scrolling down found a particular key's value was extremely long, so much that I never got to it's end before deciding to open it in an editor to see what was happening. I found 8 keys, all named Bookmark, that had huge values ranging from about 2.5MB to 4.3MB in length which is extremely long for a preference file where the rest of the keys are less than 2400 characters long with most of them less than 500.

When I removed this plist file and let OS X recreate it and modified my sidebar to have the same items as before the resulting file's length was now about 7,000 bytes (down from it's earlier size of 11MB, about 1500 times smaller). And most of the slowness in Yosemite was gone for me. I believe that there were several places that when OS X needed details from that preference file it ended up reading the whole file which as happening while the beach ball was spinning on the screen with nothing else moving. Worse, after watching some file I/O on that file it looks like the whole file is rewritten when a change affects some preference contained in it and the combined reading and writing slowed the whole system beyond use.

After several days, the slowness began to return and I found that several Bookmark keys with large values were back in the same preference file. Today I learned more and think I know what is happening. After examining other large preference files it seems that large Bookmark key values are also being added to the com.apple.recentitems.plist preference file which affects the speed of operations that access the recent files list, especially if trying to open one of the files that has one of these large keys associated with it. (When I attempted to open one such file it seemed that nothing was happening and it was quite a bit later that a dialog showed up saying that it couldn't be accessed.)

After finally looking at all file system objects affected (defected?) with these long keys it appears that most were files or volumes that are not local to my machine. Several were Public folders on my partner's iBook, two were virtual Windows disk volumes (one from VMWare Fusion, one from VirtualBox) that they are all references file system) and one left from a USB flash drive. All of the items were no longer accessible but I'm not sure it that mattered; they all just happened to be gone. But there were at least two volumes, one on a constantly connected USB drive and one that resides on the second partition of the internal SSD. (The USB drive was divided into 5 partitions yet only one of them had acquired a huge Bookmark key value; the other partitions were defined normally.

How many songs need to be in an album?

As one of the content requirements to sell music on iTunes, Apple wants you to have at least 20 albums in the catalog.

Are there any limitations on the number of tracks in an album?

I couldn't find this information anywhere.

Thanks!

What font is used for keyboard symbols?

I'm looking for the font that Apple is using for Special Key Symbols on their keyboards. I know that Vag Rounded is used for regular characters, but that font does not support characters used for the special keys. I've been searching for a font that would look at least similar to the symbols, but so far I haven't found anything satisfying. For example, here are some of the keys with the special symbols:

Return(↩) key: return key

Tab(⇥), Caps Lock(⇪), Shift(⇧), Alt(⌥), Command(⌘) keys: various keys

iPhone (iOS) mistakes my router (mifi) as needing a login page

When using my iOS 8 iPhone 6 with a cellular mifi, it sometimes thinks this device has some sort of webpage login page, the way public wifi does (I guess sometimes called a landing page). However, it does not. Is there a way in iOS I can mark a SSID as never needing a login page?

I suspect the reason it does this is this:

  1. The mifi gives out DHCP before it has connected to the internet via cellular

  2. iOS sees that it has a local IP address but can't reach the interent via some sort of test

  3. Thus iOS assumes this is a scenario where you have to login, and tries to bring up a landing page - its blank but has the domain name that the router uses a shortcut to get to its web interface

Thanks!

Ethernet cannot see RTA1025W modem (wi-fi can)

At home I have a Dynalink RTA1025W DSL modem.

  • MBP can obtain IP via WiFI

  • MBP cannot see modem or get IP via ethernet.

  • Ubuntu/Win7/Win8 can get IP via the same ethernet cable & modem.

At work:

  • MBP can see the LAN and obtain IP via ethernet using the same USB ethernet adapter.

When I'm at home and I attempt to get an IP address via ethernet, I open the network preferences | USB Ethernet | Advanced | Renew DHCP Lease. It thinks about it for a second, then puts focus in the box titled "DHCP Client ID", as if it expects me to type something.

The status remains "cable unplugged". Either the cable for USB Ethernet is not plugged in or the device at the other end is not responding.

If I try to ping my router's address (192.168.1.1) no route is found.

I have tried many different cables, all otherwise known to be working.

Occasionally, the network config will decided to allocate a self-assigned IP, which is not helpful. It does this at random times without any prompting from me.

When I touch the USB ethernet adapter dongle it is warm (this may be normal).

I have tried the following without success:

  • deleting and re-adding the USB Ethernet interface

  • creating a new network "location"

  • removing the file com.apple.plf.plist

  • assigning manually an IP from the valid range

  • safe boot (problem occurs in safe boot)

  • SMC reset & wait 10 mins

  • PRAM reset

  • removing NetworkInterfaces.plist and preferences.plist

  • removing SystemConfiguration/*

  • trying a different cable

  • trying a different ethernet port on same modem

  • trying a different USB port on MBP

Any other advice?

iPhone claims diskspace is full

My iPhone 5S 16GB is complaining about disk running out of free space. When I check it in settings, it shows me I have 1,5GB free space.

Why do I get this notice? It started since iOS8. Is this a bug in iOS?

Can I configure calendar alarms from automator before they are created?

In automator you can make calendar alarms that are ridiculously useful. One that I often use is a little automation that will create and send an email whenever the calendar alarm is triggered by the calendar event. My question is this; can I change things about the calendar event that gets automatically generated by the creation of a new calendar alarm whenever I save it, before it is created. This is easier explained in an example. I also would love to develop this into an application if its possible so here's the scenario in an ideal world.

I want to send an email to my boss. It is four in the morning and I don't want him to know that I was being irresponsible and staying up so late but I have a terrible memory and if I don't write what I need to him now I probably will forget. So I click my nice "New Delayed Mail" automation application. It asks me when I want to send it. I type that in. It asks me who I to send it to and what it should contain. Then (without creating the event and then editing the event) automator creates a new calendar event with the given date and time that I put in at the early stage of my application running. Obviously with the rest of the information correct as well about sending it to him and what it should say.

Is this possible?

All images that are sent with Apple Mail shown as poststamp size at the receiver. How do I fix this?

Whenever I sent an Email containing an image the receiver gets the image in poststamp size. Even with pictures from a camera, which are 3200x2400, they still remain displayed at the receiver as some kind of picture of 200x150..

I'm aware of the dropdown to choose from "actual size, small, medium, large", but I've tested with this feature and none of the solves the issue.

I would almost say there is some overriding rule that sets the image at small size.. perhaps a terminal command could resolve this?

Anyone might have a solution ?

Can I add actions to control automator to automator?

Is there any way that I can add automator itself to the list of services I can automate? For example right now I can go and add a launch application action to the workflow and within that action launch automator. Effectively this creates a level of control over automator but only by routing it through the utilities action item. I know that you can add new application action libraries to automator to control any app that releases a library for it. So is there one for automator? Where is it if there is?

How to use gcc or git without installing xcode?

I am a newbie of Mac user. I can see there are gcc, git, etc in the "/usr/bin" folder. But when I want to use them, it prompts like this:

MacBook-Pro:~ nan$ git
xcode-select: note: no developer tools were found at '/Applications/Xcode.app', requesting install. Choose an option in the dialog to download the command line developer tools.
MacBook-Pro:~ nan$ gcc
xcode-select: note: no developer tools were found at '/Applications/Xcode.app', requesting install. Choose an option in the dialog to download the command line developer tools.

Does it mean I must install xcode to use gcc or git, thanks very much in advance!

Cannot copy to clipboard after playing World of Tanks

After playing World of Tanks on my MacBook Pro, I am not able to copy anything to clipboard, drag and drop items, text, etc. I have cleared the cache but this hasn't helped. Only restarting helps.

MacBook 13" white (mid 2007) - how to treat a new battery for optimal battery life?

The old battery of my MacBook 13" white (mid 2007) is dead (as I always had the MacBook on my desktop and did not bother calibrating or discharging the battery).

I bought a new one (original Apple battery) and I wonder how to treat it to get optimal performance and a long life.

I found general tips on the apple.com homepage, but they are for MacBook Air/Pro Li-Ion batteries, and if I am not mistaken, the MacBook 13" has a Li-Polymer battery which might be a different story.

So what do I do with the new battery?

  • first use/charging

  • daily use

Force Messages to Stay Logged in on OSX

we have been using messages.app for communication in the office, but we often find that the client doesn't stay logged in. We have it set to auto-start at user login, we have it set to login when users resume activity, but many times, users still end up logged out. They don't realize it, and others in the office are trying to send them messages.

Is anyone aware of a way to force messages to stay logged in?

iphone view picture date

Since this took me awhile to find and a few of the apps here are old I thought I would share several iphone date viewing apps.

The ones I have tried:

Exif Wizard

Good app that I have used for about 2 years. Nothing fancy it just lets you view the metadata. It is only 0.4 MB.

Koredoko - Exif and GPS Viewer

Good app that I have used for about 2 years. Nothing fancy it just lets you view the metadata. It is only 4.5 MB.

Camera Awesome

Ok app. It is 48.5 MB. It doesn't do anything exciting to me. I rather use the regular camera app for taking pictures instead of this because of the size. It can view metadata.

The ones I have not tried:

Flickd

Size: 0.3 MB

Photo Date

Size: 3.4 MB

Photo Investigator: View, Edit, Remove Metadata; GPS, EXIF...

Size: 3.5 MB

Pixelgarde

Size: 4.8 MB

Metadata Cut - View and Remove Metadata

Size: 21.5 MB

How can I change the position of alerts pop up?

With Yosemite we got handy, growl-like, alert popups from the notification center. It's great but it often hides handy utils which also take the top right position of the screen.

Is there any way change the position of those alerts (via system preferences, plist, or an app)?
