IMessage crashing after long message Ipad 4

i have a 16Gb IPad 4 IOS 8.1.1 , I sent a really long line of random sentences copied and pasted to one of my friends. Now I whenever I try to open imessage it loads for 10 minutes then crashes to home screen. I've tried turning everything off and on, restarting and waiting. I can't reset or restore because my iPad is for school work, And it's got my teachers Apple ID on it... And restrictions :-( Help please?!

iMac 27inch + SSD and HD + Filevault + Yosemite

I have an iMac 2011, 27 inch model.

It's got a 1TB hard drive, but I want to add a SSD drive then upgrade to Yosemite. I also require FileVault 2.

How hard is it to add the SSD drive, then do a new Yosemite install?

Is it difficult to have the system/applications on the SSD, and the userdata on the HDD?

What are the best practice suggestions I should take?

Will FileVault 2 cause any problems? Will it encrypt both the system and the user data?

Macbook A1342 Shuts down when releasing keys

my problem isn't quite similar, but still it is vey frustrating... I own a late 2009 A1342 macbook 6.1 unibody which was diagnosed as brain damaged and followed to be thrown off into the junk jar :( and I said NO! so I saw myself onto a personal challenge and a duty to restore the machine and put it back into a useful thing... so it's been about two months since then and this is more or less what i can tell you about:

Original Specs: -No turn on -No chimes

Primary AID: took the HDD out and erased it from disk utility on another mac in Mac OS X Plus (Journaled) --> Nothing (hereby --> procedure)

Second Try: I performed "jump start" removing the keyboard flexible from the bay and made a point of contact at the seven -or so- pin (which is basically where the power button is located) to my surprise the computer did started and as normal showed the "unknown bootable startup icon" the one with the interrogation sign on a folder... SO i performed a clean installation of Lion and -already knowing- at the moment of putting some personal data like names and such I realized that the keyboard was damaged due to a water spill.

I changed the keyboard entirely with the top case, THIS worked... BUT I started having SUCH an issue when loading the apple icon on the booting dialogue which is SHUTS DOWN and I discovered that when holding up any key I was able to reach the complete booting process but if release this particular key (F6) it shuts down instantly... I changed the Magsafe power board due to an electrical failure and the problems are still present to this day...

The computer turns on by himself when shutting down and plugging off the magsafe cord... WTF, when lifting up the computer, when shaking (I know all this issues are associated to a SMC problem but wether or not resetting the problems persists... and I believe the computer won't even allow me to do it.

This is very annoying and frustrating at the time to work on the machine. And there is something weird about the admin privileges that won't allow me to copy or drop n drag things to the Macintosh HD main route without authenticating the user password... and again WTF??

Please guys if you lend me a hand i will be very grateful with you... in other words HELP!!!

MacBook Internet Recovery "?" Folder

With my 2012 MacBook Pro, I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS X (any version that will work) onto a new Solid State Drive that replaced a broken one. I can get to the Internet Recovery screen just fine when directly connected to the Internet (ethernet). The problem lies AFTER the Internet Recovery installation succeeds.

There really isn't a good way to describe what happens because the laptop seems to be trying to decide whether or not there is a problem or not. Here is a link to a YouTube video I've uploaded of the problem:

After this happens for a while, it resolves to just the blinking "?" Folder Icon.

I do not have access to another Mac computer.

How to change the default command to open shells in the MobileTerminal Cydia package

I am using MobileTerminal on iOS 7, and want to know how to change the default shell from sh: to bash:. I assume I would need to change the login command for this, but how would I?

2 different types of Booting? MBPr mid-2014

So i just got a new mac book pro retina 15inch, yesterday. When I used it for the first few hours, the way it would boot, it would appear to boot like in 2 seconds, it'd go straight to the user login screen and once i logged in, it'd show a loading bar(which I assume, caused the "real boot" and loaded the OS enviorment). I liked this, made it seem "faster".

Sadly a known FireVault bug/issue affected me so the disk wouldnt finish encrypting, so I restored back to a fresh install, and now the laptop boots the typical way.

Shows apple logo and the loading bar first, which indicates the operating system is loading and then shows the user screen, and when you login it doesnt have the loading bar this time(i assume because the OS is already loaded) and just logs in instantly.

Is there anyway I can go back to previous way? I prefer it because although its the same boot speed from power button to user desktop. It just creates an illusion of a faster boot.

Mail.app message selection gets reset when clearing the search box

If I search for something in my mailbox, select the message I'm interested in, then clear the search box (because I want to see the other messages that came in around the same time), the selection resets and I lose my selected message.

(Seriously, WTF Apple? What possible excuse is there for this lazy, annoying behavior? If ever I need a poster child for pointing out how Apple is coasting on their reputation and can no longer be arsed to actually make things "just work" this is a good candidate.)

Sorry, I'll try to be productive here. I thought there was once some option like "View message in mailbox" that could be used to select a given message without filtering out everything else, but I can't find it anywhere. Am I imagining things? Does this still exist?

OS X Extended Desktop Limits

I am looking for information on whether there is a limit to the width/height of the OS X extended desktop. I have seen setups with 2 rows of 3 displays, resulting in a 7680 x 2880 desktop.

Now I would like to connect six 1080p displays to a 2013 MacPro. I need the OS X desktop to span these in a single row for an effective resolution of 11520 by 1080 pixels.

Does anybody know, if this is possible?

Boot Camp to replace previous Mavericks partition

I have a 2011 MacBook with an old partition containing Mavericks and a larger partition that I had reserved for Yosemite. Yosemite's running great, and I would like to install Windows alongside it. All guides appear to indicate that BOOTCAMP must be a second partition and that the OSX partition must be the first. Without messing around with reFIT and a lot of manual unsupported futzing, can I manually format the Mavericks partition, cause the Yosemite partition to grow over the previous partition, or otherwise somehow do what I wish without backing up the Yosemite partition, restoring over the whole drive and starting from there? I'm willing to do that, just looking for a shortcut using what I have. As a bonus, I have the NTFS driver from my Seagate external drive, so I can partition to NTFS from within Disk Utility.

Macports with Xcode CLI tools only

I ve installed the latest version of MacPorts and Xcode CLI tools for OS X 10.10 - I don't want download 4GB of data because I need only GCC. Everything looks fine - I can download and compile ports, except the one thing - every time when I try to install new port I get following messages:

Warning: xcodebuild exists but failed to execute
Warning: Xcode does not appear to be installed; most ports will likely fail to build.

But as I said before everything works fine. Should I worry or just ignore these messages?

Including Python Script Dependencies (virtualenv contents) in Platypus

I'm trying to turn a python script into a OS X App that you can run directly from Finder. I'm trying out Platypus, which seemed like the simplest option. The problem I'm running into is with the packages I'm including in the script. I installed them through pip into a virtualenv. Wondering what the best/most proper way to include those files in the Platypus bundle would be. I know I could just copy them over to the same directory and include them in the Platypus bundle, but would prefer to do something cleaner like including the virtualenv, although it seems like that would then have to be installed by the users of the app.

I also ran into py2app and will take a look at it as an alternative

Capture just active display

When I use ⇧+⌘+3 to take a screenshot with my laptop connected to a external monitor, it output a couple of images, one for each display.

Is there any way to take the screenshot of just the active monitor instead of both?

BTW, I know that exist ⇧+⌘+4 that let me select a region, but this is not the idea.

Transferring message history to new iPhone (w/o backup)

Short question: I just bought a new iPhone and am can't figure out how to transfer my message history onto the new device from Messages.app on my Mac.

Long story: My old iPhone had something corrupted in the OS so I didn't want to do a backup/recovery approach to the migration through iCloud to prevent the problem from coming along with the data.

I've setup new one using the New iPhone workflow and have connected to iCloud so all my contacts, calendar info, etc., are now on the new phone.

My problem is that the my (text) message history didn't make it over to the new phone. It's still in the Messages app on my Mac but I need guidance on how to make it also show on the phone.

In case you're curious, the old phone has been wiped and traded-in.

Ideas? Suggestions? All help appreciated.

Playing iPod/iPhone music via USB

There are some devices (mostly car audio) which can play iPhone sounds, read music file info and control playback via USB connection. I'm wondering what technology is used for this? Are there any specs or API?

Is there a way to put switches at the end when using OS X command-line?

For example:

rm long/path/to/some/dir  -r

instead of:

rm  -r  long/path/to/some/dir

Is it possible to make it work like that, as in GNU command line utils?

iPhone does not connect to wifi "hotspots"

My iPhone 4s, 7.1.2, can connect to wifi networks.

But when it detects that wifi network as a "wifi hotspot" (eg, Starbuck in UK) the "connect to a hotspot" thing appears and then nothing else happens - the phone does not join the network. That dialog just times out.

How do I troubleshoot this?

Getting loads of Open error 5's when using Terminal to repair permissions

My GF's MBP running on Mavericks broke down 2 days ago. First I tried to copy the contents of her HDD to an external HDD but got the I/O error time after time.

Then I tried all the basic things like repairing the disk in Recovery Mode and try and verify/repair permissions in disk utility, cause I read that that could also help but that didnt do the trick either.

Now I am trying to repair the permissions through the Terminal and getting alot of detailed I/O errors. Also the progress bar is stuck @ 74% now. It doesnt advance only I get every 20 secs or so a new line with a new error. My original plan to try n save the data on the HDD has become too complicated for my skills so I'm in desperate need of help since it has been awhile since last backup.

I held down option button and power got a screen with refresh, harddrive & arrow button... now what??

Install Mavericks on second partition in Yosemite-only system?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (so yes it's capable of Mavericks). I have only Yosemite currently installed on the drive. I have an app I need to run that does not seem to properly support Yosemite, so I want to install Mavericks on a second partition to setup a dual boot environment.

I do not presently have access to a spare USB drive that can be erased to create installation media nor do I have any blank double-layer DVD discs.

I have already used disk utility to resize and create my extra partition. However, I am not able to actually start the OSX Mavericks installation. The error is "This copy of the Install OS X application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X."

I need to get this done for a college project due in the next couple of days and won't have access to a flash drive that can be erased and used for install media within that time. Is there anything I can do, say from the terminal, to force the installation of Mavericks to proceed onto the second partition?

Time Machine files cannot be erased

I put Mavericks on my iMac and Time Machine quit updating. I just want to erase all the TM files on the external HD, but cannot. Looks like reformating is the only answer. Any solutions? Using SuperDuper! now.

Homebrew default compiler

I have read similar topics here, but unfortunately these solutions does not help me.

I would like to recompile all installed software (or at least some formulas) from Homebrew using gcc from Homebrew.

Is it possible to force Homebrew to use specific compiler (e.g. gcc ) and compiler options (e.g. std library to use for linking)?

I have tried to set all kinds of environment variables, but it does not help :/ ?

Also tried to use this solution.

The reason for doing that is that I want to compile some code* with gcc and link against libraries installed from brew. But it seems that gcc can't link to libs built by clang. On other side it lacks support of some C++11 features which are required by the program* i would like to compile.

So only solution that I see, is to recompile all needed libs with gcc.

What exactly are these "domain" and "service targets" and how do I associate them with plists for use by launchd?

OS X 10.10 introduces a new launchctl API for managing LaunchDaemons and launching plists. Log messages and man pages suggest that keys like KeepAlive and RunAtLoad should no longer be used and that subcommands enable; bootstrap; and kickstart should be used in preference to load -w and unload -w

However it is not clear from the man pages how to associate a plist with the "domain" and "service target" it talks about and without which these commands cannot be used with existing plists that seemingly were quite sufficient for OS X 10.9

Hook up 3 monitors to Mac Mini Late 2014

I have the Mac Mini late 2014 and want to hook up 3 monitors in total. It works great with 2 displays (1x Thunderbolt + 1x HDMI). Once I add a third monitor to the second Thunderbolt port, just nothing happens. What can I do to get my third monitor working?

iMessage out of whack... how to "reset"

I had iMessage working just fine with the latest iOS8 on my iPad, iPhone & Yosemite OSX on my MBP... then after a system restart on my MBP a week+ ago iMessage is all out of whack. It works fine and as expected on my iOS devices (iPad & iPhone), but on my MBP, while I can receive & send messages, I have the following symptoms:

• No one resolves to their name... only phone numbers are listed for the other person in the conversation. This includes people I've sent messages to or received.


• When I sent a message, I can find the person by name & autocomplete, but when I accept the person from autocomplete, it resolves to their number.


• All recipients show up as red... for instance if you hover over the name/number, usually it shows a blue selection box, but for me they are all red.

I've tried signing out & back in, but that didn't work. I don't have any contacts in iCloud as I am on a hosted Exchange (Office 365) where all my contacts are. This is how it was setup since I got my MBP 1yr ago so I know this works and it still works on my iOS devices.

Everything I've seen talks about syncing your contacts to iCloud... but I've never needed to do that in the past and even when I manually copy one contact over, that has their name, email & correct phone number, it still won't resolve them to their name, only their number.

Any ideas how to reset this as everything I'm doing isn't working :(

why wont my wifi sharing let me connect other devices to the internet?

I have my note 4 tethered to my mac through usb. (Tmobil unlimited data, plus 3 gig hotspot). I set up wifi sharing pn mac going from ethernet adaptor(en3) to wifi and ethernet. I can not get anything to connect to my shared wifi or from the ethernet. I try to get my netgear neo to connect and it says it connects but then it says that there is no internet connection. It times out or says failed. I also have an android tablet and an ipad2 that I have tried to connect with no luck. I can see that the wifi from the other devices and it does seem to connect just not get to the internet. I have searched everywhere trying to find a solution. Now I will say this: if I just use my phone as a hotspot and not a tethered usb hotspot, I can get everything to connect directly to my phone with no problem. So it has to be something I am overlooking on my mac. The arrow is showing proving that I am indeed sharing, I just cant get the internet to go through with the other devices.

Which hash algorithm is used when using S/MIME by default?

I just installed my S/MIME certificates on my iPhone 6 for both, signing and encryption.

Using a mail client on computers I can configure which hash algorithm and encryption is used. As for example Outlook per default uses SHA1 this should be changed to at least SHA256 for various reason.

Such an option is not available in the iOS settings for my mail app. I can only decide if I want to sign or not.

Which hash algorithm is used under iOS 8.1 ?

I've been using swift player for speeding up video lectures. But upgrading to iOS 8 have broken the player. Is there a player which support faster playback of YouTube, vimeo, Ted, etc, videos?

Is there a way to run a specified script or program when the screen is locked or unlocked? Ideally a bash function or an AppleScript.

Is there an event that I could subscribe to that would allow me to do that? Or an existing app that supports this?

Invisible folder after usage of trash-cli

Recently, I decided to install trash-cli on my MacBook Pro after using it successfully on my Ubuntu machine. To set it up I ran the following commands.

After installation, I decided to delete a folder using trash-put. So I run trash-put ~/anaconda/. However, this folder has never arrived in my .Trash folder, yet it disappeared from my Finder (see below, sorry for the mess of files).

So far so good, the folder disappeared. However, when running locate anaconda in a Terminal window the folder Anaconda is still there (only the first couple of lines are shown in the screenshot below).

Now, my question is whether any of you guys could have an idea on how I can delete this folder or at least make it re-appear in my Finder?

So far, I've tried restarting my MacBook without success. I've also tried to run rm /Users/admin/anaconda which failed, too.

Running 10.10.1 on a MacBook Pro Mid-2012. I do have administrator rights and full access to all files.

hows the battery life on Macbook Air 2014 model with recent Ubuntu Release (14+)

I am planning to buy macbook Air 2014 model but i prefer to use Ubuntu for my use. dual booting with ubuntu is not good choice for me when my budget is hardly 128GB model . I am considering macbook air only for its Lightweight and Battery backup . Track pad is not big issue for me as it seems for many users (OS-X users). I am not able to find any solid statement about Battery life with MacBook Air mid 2014 model with recent Ubuntu release say 14+ .

FIPS Compliance with iOS app

Our company is working on getting FIPS validation for the iOS app and is in the initial phase. We have decided to use a private FIPS-certified libraries for using in the crypto modules. I have some questions regarding that.

• If I include the fipscanister and the openssl TLS libraries in the build and use only the TLS library's FIPS certified cryptocalls can I say the app is FIPS-validated ? If not else what else I should do ? ( we use a variation of device udid as the encryption key for the AES encrption since the app is not a password based app).


• I heard some thing like integrity check. What does it mean ?


• Do I have to change anything in the build process apart from these changes?


• While I read somewhere that for android, there must be an external key to the crypto module which is used to generate an internal key with the use of FIPS approved CSPRNG to encrypt and decrypt the data. Does the same requirement apply to iOS too?
