I have Safari set to open a blank page when I open a new tab. I like it better than what it is normally set to, but unfortunately I work late a lot and the giant white area on the screen bothers my eyes a considerable deal. Does anybody know a way to make the blank page darker so that it's easier on the eyes?

I have decided I want to change my dentist because I feel my current one no longer does a good job!! I feel he doesn't listen to me, and I feel he does not spend as much time checking my teeth as he used to. I am trying to install windows 8, efi, on my SSD. I am getting the Error code: 0xC0000005 "Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accesible, and restart the installation everytime. I have tried all the solutions on this thread: http://ift.tt/1DvBwmK which is basically try formatting exfat, then installing; the setup stops at 89% in step2 and gives the above error. I also tried the procedure here: http://ift.tt/WOWgUw I get the error code above in step1 of the install. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2009 Mac Pro that i'd like to add a hardware raid card to. I am running VMware ESXi with various OSes running as VMs. The apple raid card is not what i'm looking for.
I would also like to utilize the 4 harddrive bays and get 6G speeds. I have run into a few potential solutions, but have not been impressed. Anyone found a good solution?
I'd like to be able to enter a command that registers a speakable word that OS/X can listen for all the time. When the user speaks that word, it should launch an app. Similar to the "OK google" idea.
But is this possible these days? Last I heard of people doing this was in 2010.
I hope to find an iphone app that remind me to focus, snooze every 5 minutes, can be configured to play a ringtone or just vibrate. If the "5 minutes" is configurable, that's even better.

i have to replace my broken logic board on my MacBook Pro retina display early 2013. I recently changed my AppleID and iCloud passwords. I can log into the services on my mac, but my iphone stubbornly refuses. I've already reset all the device's settings, but I still get this error.

I'm trying to figure out a way to do the following: when I quit Logic Pro X, I want to also automatically quit other apps that I use with it, as they are no longer needed. Is this possible?
I have been having trouble with my mac mini. It randomly crashes several times a day. Sometimes it seems to be triggered by using any browser, but Chrome is the worst. Youtube seems to be the biggest culprit. I have completely wiped out the drive and re-installed the OS, but it didn't fix the problem. Here is my crash report. Can anyone help me figure this out? I'm developing an app for OS/X, so I've set the delegate on my NSWindow and I' receiving window resize events. However when I tell my main view controller to resize, all of the changes I make to the views' frames are ignored. What is the correct way to programmatically respond to a window resize? I am not using NSConstraints nor XIBs and I'd rather not.
I am running OSX 10.8.5.
I need to open a lot of text file. Sometimes I minimize some of their windows. At some point, I want to close them (but not all of them) when they are still minimized and shown as icons on Dock. When I right click on those icon, there is only one option which is to "Open....". This really drives me crazy.
What is the best and quick and intuitive way to close these minimized windows, please help me.
When using text replacement, “replace all” and “replace in selector” are grayed out and I can’t click on them. How do I get the ability to click on them?

I'm using the following code to set a Philips Hue bulb with specific hue, saturation and brightness using Applescript. It works perfectly.

I'd like to add a random color option. This seems like it should insert a random number for the hue setting, but instead, it inserts the name of the variable:

I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS 6 an I would like to watch movies on the TV, therefore I bought an AV composite cable. Only videos that are located in the "photos/videos app" can be played on the TV through the AV cable. Is there an app that can download videos from YouTube to that folder?
I have a folder structure of thousands of pictures and videos. They are all exported and therefore have the same creation date, time. I would like to set the creation date for all the files according to the names the have. All files follow the same naming convention and have the date and time in the file name.

I have an OpenVPN vpn on OS X Yosemite which creates a utun0 device with an address on the 10.0.0.0/8 private network. I map our internal service hostnames to addresses on this network in /etc/hosts.
At the same time, I access certain services on machines which are dual-homed on the 10.0.0.0/8 and 172.16.0.0/12 networks. Sometimes, these services return addresses to other services on the 172 network. Since my machine does not have an interface to the 172 network, I cannot access these addresses.
For example, I have a web app which listens on 10.68.0.62 and 172.31.36.129. I can reach it on 10.68.0.62:80, but sometimes it might link to another address like 172.31.36.128:80. This machine has an address 10.68.0.86.
Is there a (sane) way to transparently forward requests from my machine to addresses in 172.16.0.0/12 to corresponding addresses in 10.0.0.0/8? For example, forward requests to 172.31.36.128 to 10.68.0.86.
I suspect this is possible with some pfctl wizardry, but I'm not familiar enough with that tool to figure it out myself.

Okay, so something really strange has happened, and it's a doozy, so please bear with me.
So let me fill you in on what happened here.
I have an external 3TB hard drive that I use for storage with my Mac Pro. It recently had 4 partitions on it. This is what the map looked like.
I had originally downloaded and installed Yosemite on a separate partition to play around with it, and then when I decided I liked it, I copied my Mavericks Mac HD onto another partition of the drive as a backup. I then upgraded my main system to Yosemite.
Later on, I decided that I no longer needed the Mac HD clone, since Yosemite is pretty stable at this point, so I removed it; I also resized the Yosemite partition down to 300 GB since I wasn't going to write anything else to it.
The partition map then looked like this:
That was all fine. However, recently, I installed Windows through Bootcamp on my primary SSD. In Windows' disk management, I tried to remove the Windows Bridge partition and replace it with a 0.7TB NTFS partition. The partition deleted, but the reformat operation failed, so I figured I would boot into OS X, remove the partition, and add a new FAT 0.7 TB partition which could then be reformatted by Windows into NTFS.
I opened up Disk Utility and saw that the Windows Bridge partition was still there according to OS X. So I went ahead and removed it.
The windows partition removed successfully, but the Yosemite partition immediately became unrecognizable by OS X. The files are intact, but OS X sees it as disk1s3, and is unable to read, write, or repair the disk.
The strangest part of it all is that Windows can still read the drive. If I boot into Windows, I can copy anything from the partition, and it works just fine, but boot back into OS X, and the partition is unreadable.
I have tried to create my own partition map for the drive using TestDisk to find the partitions and PDisks to create the new partition. TestDisk shows some weird configurations. It appears as though there are two partitions, masquerading as MS Data, assigned to the same set of blocks, with the name Yosemite. That must be causing the problem:
PDisk will not let me open the disk to be rewritten.
pdisk: can't open file '/dev/rdisk1' for writing (Resource busy)
Since Windows can read the disk, I figured, why not copy everything from the Yosemite partition onto the Windows ST partition and reformat the broken partition. The only problem with that is that Windows limits path names to 255 bytes, and in OS X, a lot of the files have filenames that are much longer than that. I need all of the files on the drive in order to keep it bootable, so skipping those files that would not copy is out of the question.
Do any of you fine people have any ideas as to how I can fix this partition map and/or get all of my data off of that partition so I can reformat it?
I can definitely go pick up another 3 TB drive to use to copy all of the files off of the existing drive so that the drive can be completely reformatted if you know of a way that I can get all of the files off of the Yosemite partition.
I bought a used iPhone 4 with iOS 7 from a local shop. I am not sure as to how to be sure if it is not stolen. I was able to do a factory reset on the phone and use my own Apple ID to use the phone.
I tried going to iCloud to check if Find My iPhone was active on the device and I found out that it is activated but using my Apple ID only.
I know that I should do a proper verification before I bought it but I think it is too late now and nothing can be done about it other than checking next time I buy a used phone.
For the last few days I've been getting scared because of these messages that appear very frequently on wakeup, and almost always when I wakeup after a long duration. Sometimes it says "you restarted your computer because of a problem" and others it says "computer restarted because of a problem".
The first time I had the chance to look at the report (not this one) I thought "oh well, happens", but since then I got it a few times, one time the computer wouldn't wakeup. Today I got it again and got the option to see the report so I've pasted it here. As you can see, and I'm not sure this says too much, but in the report it's written that: BSD process name corresponding to current thread: EvernoteHelper. Is it safe to say that EvernoteHelper is the cause? If not, what do I do?

I want to forward all SMS and iMessages received on my iPhone to my e-mail address. I have tried IFTTT, but can't see a way to do it. Has anyone else managed to do this?
I'm moving my iTunes library to another computer that already had iTunes on it (both are Windows-based). On the original computer, video files loaded and played fine (I sync to an Apple TV). I tried to import video files that worked just fine on the original into the new one and they don't come over. If I copy the files into iTunes on a Mac, they work.
This ISN'T an encoding issue (I believe) as the files work properly on other iTunes. The only difference is one machine is 32 bit and the other is 64 bit.
Any ideas?

When I last installed Yosemite I watched at the logfile and it displayed messages like

If I sign up for the iOS Individual Developer Program (rather than the Company one), will I be able to set up multiple users within iTunes Connect so that I can have some TestFlight internal beta testers?
After I installed Yosemite on my MacBook Air, the battery icon is just an X.
I have tried restarting the computer, and turning off the computer, then back on, but nothing is happening! Even the charger won't recognize that it is plugged in. This Mac is less than two years old, the battery should be fine.
Obviously fsck is pretty safe to run in single-user mode. I'm using gtypist to learn touch typing and would like to be able to run it in single user mode so that I don't have to load the whole OS just for a command-line app.
When I first try running gtypist I got a segmentation error 11, which "means that the program accessed a memory location that was not assigned". On subsequent attempt get "HOME environment variable not set."
I thought maybe I need to use su to login in as a regular user, but my user account isn't listed in /etc/passwd. Should it be?
Is it even "safe" to run applications in single user mode? If so - would I create a new user? Create an environment variable in the root account? I don't even see HOME listed as a gtypist env variable so maybe it's not a gtypist variable at all.
On side note, just learned that rather than reboot into single user mode one can just open terminal and sudo shutdown now, after which OS X will "quietly and consistently shutdown to single-user mode." Sweet.
When we plug the Iphone 5 in it only syncs some songs that were ripped from cds. Like 2 or 3 from the album. We have already made sure the albums and artists are checked under manage songs option, but it only puts 2 or 3 songs on the iphone. Why and what do we need to do?
I had my iPad synced to my computer, and my hard drive crashed, after a reïnstall of Windows, iTunes generated a new library persistent ID for me and i won't be able to sync my iPad to my computer. The easiest way would be to change the computer iTunes library persistent ID to the iTunes library persistent ID that's on my iPad, the problem with that is that i already have synced my iPhone to my computer and i would lose the stuff on my iPhone. Can i change the library persistent ID on my iPad? I have full root access on my iPad, but i don't know where it's stored and how to change it.

With grab you can set a specific cursor, which misses point. Here I want to capture the cursor shape that occurs when the mouse is in a specific place in a specific application. How can I capture the entire screen, just as I see it, including the cursor?

I know this discussion about spell checkers for Pages, here. I am searching for the files ending with .aff or .dic. Without them, you cannot use them in system. My current OS X is Yosemite 10.10.2.
The manual of OS X says that in Settings > Keyboard > Spelling > Set up ...
To add an additional spelling dictionary, copy the dictionary files (.aff and .dic to the Spelling folder in your Library folder.
Is there any standard dictionary for Finnish?
I find it easier to use the keyboard to navigate around my Mac.
Most of the apps I use work OK with keyboard shortcuts as they tend to highlight the currently active control.
However, I find the Mac App Store difficult to use with the keyboard as it does not highlight controls as I move around the app's window.
To give an example…
To be clear, I can "move around" using the keyboard without a problem, but as nothing is highlighted I don't know "where I am".
I've checked through the Accessibility Preference Pane in case there's something there that can help, but can't find anything that might enable highlighting.
I'd be grateful if anyone knows a way to enable highlighting of the currently selected control in the Mac App Store app, whether that's by changing a setting in the Terminal, by using a third party "tweaker" app, etc.

I'm using MacBook Air running OS X Yosimite. Recently my Japanese keyboard does not work correctly. Sometimes even it's in Japanese mode, I cannot type Japanese and I have to restart the laptop in order to use it again. It does not switch to other modes, the keyboard is still in Japanese when this happens. I did try to change to other keyboard modes, then switched back to Japanese but did not work. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

I've just upgraded to the latest version of iTunes (12.1.0.71) for Windows -- the first proper 64-bit edition of the software for Windows -- and now all my music has pops and clicks and other static when playing.
I have an extremely well-specced machine.
Latest drivers. I even ensured I reset my machine after the installation. It happens with all music files, from MP3 to AAC.
What's going on? Every other music player on my system plays the same files perfectly fine.
I encounter a problem,
I want to mount a shared remote directory, but the url has Chinese characters.
mount_smbfs //user:password@192.168.1.168/图片 /Volumes/picture
图片are Chinese characters, which mean picture in English.
When I execute this command, I get below error:
mount_smbfs: URL parsing failed, please correct the URL and try again: Invalid argument 16384
I can confirm it is caused by the Chinese character, because I can execute below command: mount_smbfs //user:password@192.168.1.168/hehe /Volumes/picture
Both hehe and 图片 are remote shared directories.
The command
nohup <command> &
does not actually work properly on mac it seems: the process is suspended. Issuing
fg
appears to be required to reactivate the command.
Here is an illustration:

Now, on Linux the process would not have been "stopped" by issuing that command..

I just went to http://ift.tt/1yWrqWt and merely loading the page shoved 6 snippet.cgi files to my ~/Downloads folder. The OS renames them sequentially. snippet.cgi, snippet-1.cgi, snippet-2.cgi, snippet-3.cgi.
Opening snippet.cgi in TextMatte ( Basic Mac OS X Text Eitor ) and the file contains "Cant get component".

I'm planning to buy an iPad Air 2 and there are some questions in my mind. So far asking from other people hasn't help me so I came here to ask.
Before posting the question, let's clarify that I need some help regarding to some features of the iPads and I should mention the storage which suits me best is 64GB so my choices are iPad Air 2 64GB Wifi or iPad Air 2 64GB 4G.

-- Do I miss much if I purchase Wifi Model since that saves me some money?

I hope to find an iphone app that remind me to focus, snooze every 5 minutes, can be configured to play a ringtone or just vibrate. If the "5 minutes" is configurable, that's even better.
Unfortunately iPhone Clock alarm snoozes every 10 minutes. and "Nag" application snoozes every 1 minute :(
I am on Mavericks and I am running emacs 24.4.1, but I have the same problem also with 22.1.1. When I open mac on a terminal on the remote host, it does not recognise option key (alt) like the meta key. I have modified the .emacs in the following way
(setq mac-option-key-is-meta nil
mac-command-key-is-meta t
mac-command-modifier 'meta
mac-option-modifier 'none)
this should change the meta key to command, but also in this case the meta key doest work . This only work on the X version of emacs (when I open emacs in a new window), both with the option as meta key that as command as meta key. This is a problem I have with emacs in the terminal-only.
Now I don't know how to run commands in emacs! is there any keybinding I can use?

Setting up a mail account iCloud does not support Thunderbird settings. This app uses a different folder map that used by iCloud, so you have to make some small changes.
First of all, if you have previously tried to install iCloud account with insactisfactorious results, it is recommended before deleting the account from Thunderbird, and delete any file on that account:
{user} / Library / Thunderbird / Profiles / xxxxxxxxxxx / ImapMail /
imap.mail.me.com (folder)
imap.mail.me.com.msf
Then:
1. Configure iCloud account in Thunderbird.
It's a little more complicated than it should. This is not Apple's fault. They work well with their own email program (Apple Mail), and they don't need to change their configuration for a third party program. Therefore it is something that should be corrected for future versions of Mozilla Thunderbird.
– New email account > name, email and password Messages: ... looking configuration: your mail provider ... based ISP ... ... trying usual data server names ... ... default Thunderbird "proposes " a configuration.
The default data show like:

2. Folders structure
Thunderbird automatically creates files in the aforementioned path where we erase all traces of the previous configuration with only 4 files:

Other way, Thunderbird does not show that folder because it thinks that folder does not exists or is not used.
Click OK in the Settings window, quit Thunderbird and reopen it. In doing so the program reads back the files from the server iCloud.
Thunderbird, by default with an account, create a folder structure. These do not match the iCloud.

If we not previously changed the IMAP root folder from Thunderbird, maybe other folders that were previously created may be displayed is them were not entirely eliminate, either by caching or for any other reason.
The problem is that if we select Thunderbird he select folders "default", he goes CREATE its own folders, with the Thunderbird-style names, not with those who iCloud recognized as good. This means that, for example, display a "Thrash" folder in the iCloud web, and a "Deleted Messages" in Thunderbird (as the other types any other relevant). Since we can not CREATE the correct folders because if you try to do that, iCloud tells us that ALREADY THERE, let them inside ANOTHER FOLDER:
For example, create a folder that call "hello" (or any other). Within create the following folders: Archive Drafts Sent Messages Deleted Messages
In Thunderbird, do this: click Settings > Server Settings > Advanced ... For the "iCloud" IMAP server directory features: hola
Un-check "Show only subscribed folders".
(Remember to quit Thunderbird each time you make any change to be shown, them are not instantly displayed)
We can see, while we are changing emails from the web in iCloud, as they appear different messages in each folder, to see how it behaves.
Already changed ROOT IMAP and created the folders with the correct names, proceed to link them:
1) In Server Configuration > Server Settings > When you delete a message: Move it to this folder: Deleted Messages in iCloud.
2) In Conf. > Copies & Folders, we must make one by one by selecting the folders with the correct names: – When sending messages, automatically: Add copy: Other: Sent Messages in iCloud – Archives, Save message files: Other: Archive – Drafts and templates: – Drafts (this being the only one that match between TB and iCloud, so use the default). – Templates, there's not that folder in iCloud, then create one for that function, both in iCloud root folder, and inside the folder "hello" that we have provisionally created, named Templates.
3) In Spam > Destination and retention > Move messages to spam: Folder "spam" in: iCloud. Here both the same name: Junk, so no problem.
Click OK. Exit and reenter Thunderbird. If you have not left loose folders assigned to something, you delete or change to a site outside of "hello". We'll see then where to place them.
When we back to Configuration, we will see only this folders: – Inbox (Because it is the "root" this "folder" is not shown in iCloud) – Drafts – Templates – Sent Messages – Archive – Deleted Messages
Well, if there's everything "clean" now, we can back to change the IMAP ROOT to the iCloud root folder. So we go to Conf. > Config. server > Advanced ... and remove the word "hello" from where we had set. OK. OK. GET OUT. Back into Thunderbird.
Folders previously created by us now are into a folder named "hello", within which are all those listed.
It could be that appeared a new folder called Notes. This is because if we turned off the option to synchronize notes in iCloud (both PC and mobile), iCloud makes notes in a folder visible in the email account, but not from Apple Mail or from the website of iCloud. Forget it.
Now you might have correctly configured each folder between iCloud and Thunderbird.

I would like to expand the system search to DjVu -files or find an alternative way to do this. My current OS X is Yosemite 10.10.2 but this can a Unix tool tool. DjVu contains an OCR text layer, making it easy to perform copy and paste and text search operations. The search is also more efficient than in PDF.
How can you search Djvu files also efficiently in a system search? I am open about tools. It can be Finder but I would prefer first efficient terminal tool.
I want to find files modified on a specific date. It is not important what time of day they were modified. I tried the following and got an empty list (no error):

If I understand this correctly, I am asking for files in a specific folder (directory) which were modified on Jan 15, 2015. If I did this right (apparently not), it should find at least one file that was modified on that date, because I can see in the window of the folder I chose that there is a file modified on Jan 15.
Also, not sure what the -0400 part is for. Is there some way that I can get the files for Jan 15, regardless of the time of day they were modified.
Is it possible to allow collaborators to only make comments to a Pages document? The only options I can find in the both Mac and iCloud versions are to make the document fully editable or view only.
I'm using a macbook pro, now the TrackPad could not be "clicked" when I press the bottom right corner.
I couldn't do the "right click" now.
This is awkward.
I know that in System Preference -> TrackPad, I could set the "Tap to click", but then I couldn't use the three fingers swipe to toggle different screens.
Any idea to fix it?
