When apps get updated, little blue dots appear next to the app name in iOS 8.1 (and some earlier versions as well). This is just a pet peeve, but those blue dots annoy me. For example, if I update 10 apps, I have to open each of those ten apps to make the blue dots go away, which is a pain.
Is there any way to disable the blue dots so they don't appear for new/updated apps? Thank you for any suggestions!
I have several email accounts that I just use for sending mail, not receiving (received mail gets forwarded to other addresses). I would like to be able to send from these address on my iPhone.
When I add a mail account on my iPhone, though (iOS 8.1), it appears I can't send from the address unless I'm also downloading mail for that account on my phone, which I don't want.
Does anyone know of a way to add an email account to the iPhone in such a way that it's just an extra "send from" address, as opposed to downloading the mail for the account?
If this can't be done with the built-in Mail app, I'd be open to suggestions for alternative apps that do provide this functionality (I couldn't find any). Thanks!
I decided to mess around with my old ipod touch 4g (I never use it anymore) and it ended up with a black screen. The power button is broken, and when I try to plug it into my pc , it doesn't connect with itunes for me to be able to restore it.

I recently tried to install a bootcamp instance of Win 8.1. The install failed for some reason (wasn't clear from the error message). This left me with an unaddressable partition. I erased that partition in Disk Utility but now I am left with a hunk of Free Space that refuses to be deleted or merged with my Macintosh HD partition.
When I try to delete it from the UI nothing happens -- no error nothing. It just sits there. When I do it from the command prompt I get an error saying that operation isn't available.
PLEASE HELP!

Finally here is a shot of the disk utility UI: 
When I upgraded to Yosemite in October, it had some problems during the process, but after it finally installed, everything worked great. It still does, but I just need some more space for Guild Wars 2 (which is around 17 GB since the last time I checked).
Today, I checked my storage status, and it was around 412 GB. I looked around for some heavy-weight stuff, and I found Recovered Items (probably from that problem during the installation process) which is 26.31 GB. Huge, yes? Very...
Anyway, in that folder are 3 more (1 is an alias for /Users), and the other 2 are Library and System. I suspect these 2 folders must be from Mavericks. So, I'm wondering, is it 100% safe to delete this monster?
P.S: When I moved the Users alias to the trash, I checked its info again, it said the original is located in /Users/(username)/.Trash/Users. I haven't deleted it yet, but I don't think it'll affect the parent.
Yes, time machine missing backup folders/files has been asked before and gone unaswered. I can't touch those threads as a new, reputationless member. It's very dissapointing to discover missing folders and files from full time machine backups.
I look forward to answers on this. This is by far one of the most disappointing feeling about Apple and a well recommended way of backing up.
I really hope someone might be able to help with this cause I am getting frustrated beyond belief.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mavericks OS X 10.9. About a week ago it crashed while I was printing, first my desktop went gray while still displaying my desktop folders and froze. I manually shut it off and upon restart I got the flashing folder with a question mark.
so far my steps have been:
Holding shift at start up - the screen stays grey and freezes (doesn't even get as far as the flashing folder)
command + R - continues into internet recovery mode
disk utility - Disk0 and mac OS X base system are available
under base system / first aid / verify disk - I get an all green and no repairs are needed
under erase and restore - all options are grayed out
when closing out of the OS X Utilities window and going into start up disk - no disk is available
Reinstall OS X - I am able to get though licensing agreement and then it stops on selecting the disk to install on because no disk options show up and there is no searching indicator or failed message.
I have taken my hard drive out and placed it in an enclosure where I was able to access and copy the files through the USB on an older laptop that is running Snow Leopard.
As far as I can tell, my hard drive is fine, all the files were available, there are no strange sounds while it is spinning and I am completely at a loss. Please Please Pleeeeease help....?
I am being asked for a password every time I create a folder. The folder is read only. I have tried to repair permissions and put a code in terminal. Neither has worked.
I'm a gamer and one day i was playing mine craft when this blabbering thing just showed up. I went to activity monitor and there was a process called com.apple.dock.extra. From the first day there was a annoying voice all the time and when i went to internet pages, i could not scroll down as it would go back up to the top again. Just yesterday i was playing mine craft when my up key stopped working. After some investigating, i think it has to do with com.apple.dock.extra. Whenever i press up, the annoying little black box goes up to multiple links and says them out to me. Finally, there is a big black box that appears telling me where my system is. My computer is a 13 inch MacBook Air version 10.7.4 and i have Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. I have a 1.8 GHZ processor. Could someone PLEASE tell me how to fix it, as this is my school computer.

Alright, so about a few hours ago I purchased OS X Server, being intrigued by it's VPN capabilities. I enabled VPN and set it up, however I'm unsure if I even did this correctly. I'm pretty sure I've set it up incorrectly or the information I'm putting in my connection on my iPhone 6 (Settings>General>VPN) is incorrect.
I'm unsure of what the "Account" and "Password" fields are. I put in the account name and password used to log into my computer (not the "Full Name", the one that appears in the home (terminal command: open $HOME -r ) directory) and it still isn't working.

Sometimes my iPhone can handle both phone calls and background data transfer concurrently, even without wifi. However, if that is not possible, iPhone terminates data transmission to handle incoming telephone transmissions by default.

I'm using the stock terminal with zsh and vim. After I exit vim, the file contents remains in the terminal. Ideally, only the previous history would be in the terminal when I exit vim (such as the behavior I've seen with linux/bash).

I use Screen Sharing on my Mac to access VNC servers on Linux machines.
This works OK, but I have been using a Mac for years, and ⌘c and ⌘v have become muscle memory. I spend as much time undoing "edits" and deleting c and v before I remember to use ^c etc.

Creating a sparseimage the same way works perfectly. I however wanted to go to a sparse bundle as the file is afterwards synchronized with Google Drive and sparsebundle are seen as folders and are then more sync-friendly.

I have an iMac (bought in 2011) and I recently upgraded it with Yosemite. I am trying to install Windows 7 on it via Bootcamp.
However, its optical drive does not work, so I chose the USB key solution using the trick of modifying the file info.plist of Bootcamp (type 'usb bootcamp youtube' in google to see a video of this trick).
So I follow the process religiously and end up with the classic and famous boring screen 'No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key'.
So I tried to use Unetbootin ( http://ift.tt/jSIdcH ) to make my USB Key bootable, and tried to boot on it through the screen that appears when you maintain the Option key (Alt button) while starting the mac. Result: I never managed to have my Unetbootin-formatted USB key appear on this screen :(
I read some stuff about reFit ( http://ift.tt/PZWUbf ) and GParted, but I just don't know how to use them...
If someone managed to install Windows 7 on his/her Mac, please help me out!

I used Clean My Mac today, but it broke something; after using it, I can't open most of apple applications (I can't open app store, mail.app, safari, infos on this mac it's now working, etc.)

On Computer1 i got an accounting software that i would like for Computer2 to run trough the local network but the database from the accounting software should be stored in computer 1?
Can i give access with read/write permission for the app or is remote desktop the only way to get it to work?
I would like to user computer 1 meantime the computer 2 is running the accounting software.

I'm attempting to setup an 'always on' Windows 7 PC running iTunes 12 (iTunes Server) on my home LAN. I currently have an apple tv3, ipad and Windows 7 PC running iTunes 12 on the network. All are working correctly with Home Share.
So, i've now closed iTunes on the existing windows PC. I've rebooted the iTunes Server and started up iTunes. After hours of messing with things, neither my iPad nor my apple TV will recognize the Home Share content.
I've run through the Troubleshooting guide a few times but without any luck (http://ift.tt/1L68qxk)
Possibly helpful information: * Using the same iTunes account on all devices including both iTunes installs * have disabled ipv6 on network interfaces of both PCs * Airplay works from iTunes Server to apple tv * All s/w has been updated to the latest versions, network connectivity verified, etc * Not using a home share password * Have disabled windows firewall on iTunes Server for all networks
Also, I ran iTunes Diagnostic test and compare results between two iTunes installs. Only expected differences (IP Addresses, PC graphics i/f differences, etc) seen. All else was identical as far as i could see.
I'd be interested if anyone has suggestions on what to try next.
I have installed yosemite and I am trying to have a backup using time machine. Time machine gives an error that the external drive size is not sufficient. And here begins the adventure...
I have an iMac which has hard disk capacity 1 TB (changed recently due to crash). Finder shows used space 486GB on Macintosh icon. This is more than 200GB more than my files in total (this is based first on adding the file size in finder of the individual folders within Macintosh, and then I have installed GrandPerspective and Omnidisksweeper, all lead to something more than 200GB used space). I have run in recovery mode, nothing is wrong with the disk. Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance.
Where is the option to set the global keyboard shortcuts for volume controls. I have a non-apple keyboard and by default none of the F keys work as media controls.

As suggested to Resetting the PRAM didn't worked. I was able to update SMC and not EFI Firmware. It's showing an error:Software is not supported on my system.

For example with CleanMyMac username option I can see users like "Kerberos FAST Account", com.apple.calendarserver and large number of others all with system privileges with id 260 or below except for Message Bus which is 500 MacPorts also has a user with id 503. Anything below 500 has a "system" in name. All "real" users that I have created are above 500.
so what would be the list for valid users that I should see in the space below 500 in a standard Yosemite installation with OS X Server on it...
I am not sending smses but am being charged for the sms being sent to some ISD number from my I Phone 4s. The number and message text supposedly sent does not appear in the sent items. How to stop messages being automatically sent to this number from my phone? Service provider IDEA in UP. Can anyone help solve this issue please?
Sometimes I notice that the screen is bluer than usually for a few seconds/minutes then goes back to normal. It does it even if no screen is plugged and no matter which applications are open. It's a MBP 15" 2011.

The email at symbol is located on the figure 2 key, however when the alt key and figure 2 key are pressed simultaneously we don't get the at symbol, we get a quotation mark, can you help with the required settings? I have the problem that some disks are instantly. The pattern seems to be that USB3 drives get to stay, but older drives are ejected.
I've tried creating a new user and connecting the devices when only logged on as this new user, but the drives are still instantly ejected.
I have tried the instantly ejected devices on another Mac and they work fine, so it is most likely my OS that is playing shenanigans.
Is there any way I can see which process sends an "eject" signal to the system?
Time Machine does not backup log files in ~/Library/Logs
But it does backup logs files within application containers. For example, log files in the folder ~/Library/Containers/http://ift.tt/1uqVs2H.
My Mail and OneDrive logs are currently adding about 2 GB per backup.
I could manually exclude each of ~/Library/Containers/*/Data/Library/Logs but that is a lot of exclusions and would be a list which needs addition whenever I install a new app.
The ~/Library/Containers/* folders were introduced to support sandboxing applications, but Time Machine seems to have not kept up with these changes.
Is there a better way of telling Time Machine to not backup the /Log folders within Containers?
I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
I am able to rearrange the dock icons for a period of time after each restart, though I have not been able to determine the length of time. Then I am not able to rearrange the dock icons again.
I have tried the solutions found here: Can't rearrange Dock icons
The killall Dock command did not do anything.
Deleting the com.apple.dock.plist file only seemed to work due to the restart because after a while the issue came back.
Is there a way to fix this issue so that I do not have to restart every time I want to rearrange icons?

Is there any way of Filtering out messages from OS X system log?
I am looking through the log on an old MacBook running Lion.
This has an error message every 10 seconds from an obsolete service.
I have a Seagate Free Agent HDD drive with NTFS formatted. Since there was trouble with writing to NTFS partition in Yosemite, I've installed OSXFUSE from dmg package and ntfs-3g from homebrew and it becomes writeable.
But, I've noticed, that every time, I connect hard drive, It mounts to the new folder, for instance here is output of listing Volumes folder:

How can I fix this? It looks like a minor issue, but I don't want to periodically clean up folders after OS.
P.s. Yosemite is the worst OS X ever.

what is the significance of the "sz" and "c" elements?
I have tried to quit, force quit and so many more things in Terminal and all over the place but it's still there. Thanks in advance for help
I recently upgraded Chromium manually from http://ift.tt/xxnHhA
I tried loading some Flash content and it won't load.
First I was thinking that maybe there's a problem with the plugin so I went to "chrome://plugins", it wasn't there, I tried installing, still wasn't there.
Went to /Applications/http://ift.tt/1BURqHK Framework.framework/Internet Plug-Ins/, there was no PepperFlash directory.
I copied from Google Chrome, reloaded Chromium, still nothing (No content and nothing appears in chrome://plugins).
Tried installing the Pepper Flash specifically from http://ift.tt/1gJyKAW (Selecting My current Mac version and the PPAPI plugin from the other list below).
Still not working.
Any additional ideas? I'm really frustrated.
