I have one of the faulty mid 2010 MacBooks with GPU panic problem. I can not work, while keeping a sane state of mind, my machine restarting 4-5 times per day.

Install OSX on Macbook Air which currently only runs Windows 7

I have a mac book air, which was formatted a long time ago, and only has windows running on it.

I would like to run Mac OS again instead of windows. Or if that isnt possible, have both OS's.

How can I get Mac OS installed on this machine again?

Bash script to import RootCA and set it to Always Trust from Server

I am working on a way to import a RootCA into the login keychain of OSX and set it to always trust, the cert is located on a file share server.

I am relatively new to the whole Bash scripting scene and have been actively researching this issue for a few weeks now with some success. I have been able to import and trust a RootCA locally, but unable to reach out to a server and import the cert.

Here is what I currently have: sudo security add-trusted-cert -d -r trustAsRoot -k $HOME/Library/Keychains/login.keychain $HOME/Desktop/rootCA

When I replace "$HOME/Desktop/rootCA" with my server path, I get prompted for a password, then receive a message: "***Error reading file "Server path" "Error reading file "Server path"

I have tried to SSH to the server and have been greeted with "Connection refused on port 22"... I don't have access to manage this server either.

Any thoughts? If you need more details, please let me know and I can try my best to explain.

Is it possible to disable Safari extensions when using Private browsing?

I recently switched from Chrome to Safari for a few choice web applications, and I found that I couldn't disable extensions like Lastpass when browsing privately, at least not apparently, like I could in Chrome (which disables extensions by default in Incognito).

Is there any way to do this from the Safari UI? I have an Applescript snippet I'm using to disable extensions, and toggle them back on when I'm done, but it's sort of a hassle, and I'd like to make this a default for Private browsing.

Does app review rejection list all issues

Our app was rejected recently with reason Google+ signin, which we understood is not according to apple policy and need to fix.

While discussing about this issue we came across an interesting question with apple review process, does apple review team list all issues (if more than one exists) while rejecting app (or) would they stop reviewing other areas as soon as they found an issue (in our case Google+ signin)?

Abnormal behavior of web browser in OS X

I am using OS X 10.9.5

When every I click in any browser, it creates a new tab with some site like "www.detoxmymac.com".

It seems that the computer is full of processes running while I run any browser. Consumes huge power. How can I stop it.

When did the colon character : become an allowed character in the filesystem?

Just noticed it works on Maverick.. the colon character : is valid for file and directory names (I accidentally entered it for a filename in Atom).

Can't find any reference to it becoming valid though (http://ift.tt/1cuveq1 still marks it as invalid).

It works in the Atom editor.

I can create a file called : with nano.

This works echo 'test' > : && cat :

In TextWrangler it only works if the file already exists but won't create it (with command line tools installed edit :)

Is this new from Mavericks? Works in Yosemite? Before?

Apple ID password retrieval problem

Does anyone know how to sort out an apple ID problem where the password for the e-mail address connected to the Apple ID cannot be remembered (and neither can I recall the first of the security questions).

How to re-open a conversation?

So I can close a conversation in Messages on my Mac and it handily disappears. I can't seem to figure out how to re-open that conversation manually (as opposed to getting a new message in that conversation, that is).

Does anyone know if that's possible?

Can't re-order songs in iTunes 12

I'm almost embarrassed to post this: I can't re-order the songs in any playlists on my Mac. It's iTunes 12.1.0.50 on OSX Yosemite 10.10.2.

The playlists are all sorted in manual order. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with them. They all play; each playlist, each song. It is a mixture of playlists I've created on this computer and ones I've synced from another. They are not shuffled. iTunes Match is enabled and not currently syncing. I've quit and restarted iTunes.

iTerm 2 style fullscreen for chrome

I am using yosemite

iTerm 2 allows me to full screen without switching to new space and preserves cmd + tab application switching via keyboard.

when i press cmd + shift + f in chrome it switches to a new space, and disables switching to chrome via cmd + tab - is it possible to full screen chrome without switching to new space and keeping cmd + tab functionality in tact (just like iterm)?

Notice my laptop screen goes dark when chrome is in full screen, whereas with iTerm, I can full screen and have access to both monitors

Does the Preview app have a freehand pen/pencil tool?

The Preview app has markup / annotate tools like rectangle, oval, line, text, speech bubble, thought bubble. Is there a pen or pencil tool that lets you draw lines in a freehand way?

(I'm using Preview version 7.0 (826.4) in OS X Mavericks 10.9.5)

"Profiles unable to read in dictionary at file {filepath} or via stdin" when trying to install profile

I am trying to install profiles on a MBP via Deploystudio and it has been quite a puzzle for me for the longest time. I have the profiles (trust and enrollment), and they both seem to work when I install them manually, but I can't install them via command line. This poses an issue for me because I assume the Deploystudio script fails out for the same reason. I also attempted to write a generic script to install the profiles, and that fails too.

(I only get the error message when I type the commands into the terminal by hand, but I assume that the error I receive when this happens is the reason none of my methods are working.)

Configuration:

• Self-signed profiles (which is why I have the trust profile.)

Command I was running to install profiles: /usr/bin/profiles -I -F /tmp/trustprofile.mobileconfig

iPhone 4 issues with updating whats app

My whats app is requesting me to update in the App Store, when I agree, it takes me to a screen which requests my password, but the id is not mine, so I cannot update it. This only happens with whats app, and not with any other apps. I had no problem with previous Whats app updates.

How not to have click twice to pause youtube videos

Im a complete new Mac user.

When I have a youtube video playing in safari window, and I'm typing an email in a different safari window, I have to click twice to pause the youtube video, once to focus the window, and once again to actually pause the video. But if I double click the video it will switch to full screen! I have to click twice with a pause...

Is there any configuration I can change so that I only have to click once?

I Googled the problem and I see a lot about "focus follows mouse" plugins, but I'm not sure if that's what I need, I just want the click to go through, instead of a "dedicated focus click", because that doesn't make much sense to me.

Cable modem compatible with Back to my Mac?

Currently I have Comcast business internet with fixed IPs, but it turns out that the only that I use the fixed IPs is to log into my computers at home using afp:// and vnc:// while traveling. I would like to switch to Comcast for home in order to save $, but that will give me dynamic IPs.

Apple makes it seem that the modem/router needs to support UPnP or NAT-PMP in order for Back to my Mac to work, but I haven't found any cable modems that say that they support these protocols.

Any suggestions for using Back to my Mac with a cable modem and dynamic IPs before I change my service?

If it makes any difference, currently my home computers are hooked up to the outside world by ethernet, using an Airport Extreme as a switch between the modem and the computer.

Sudo giving dyld problem. Help for a beginner

I am new to using a macbook terminal. Initially when I used the terminal for working on Raspberry Pi everything was great. But now when I try to use the terminal and type sudo it keeps giving a dyld message. And also rejects my commands. The message is :

File extension shows in BASH but on in Finder

I created a text file with a specific extension:

It displays in finder link this:

and BASH like this:

with a .rtf extension. In Finder, I went to preferences/advanced and made sure that "Show all filename extensions" is checked:

But it still does not display the extension?!

Please advise.

Help find what causes MBP reboot in 10.10.2

I have a Mac Book Pro from 2011. I've been updating it to all OSX versions since I bought it and recently I updated to Yosemite. At the time I also changed memory + HDD. I cloned my old drive to the new and swapped them.

Everything worked fine for 2 months but in the last 2 weeks I've had it crashing on me twice. It has never happened before.

Do you have any tips for how I can find what's causing the problem? I've been trying to look in the system.log file but I'm not sure what to look for. There is a lot of output there that doesn't feel quite right though...

Or should I just make my first re-install since I bought instead?

How to add free space to a Logical Volume Group? (Resizing Partitions)

I have two CoreStorage volumes on disk, one is 200GB the other is 50GB. I want to make the 1st 125GB and the second one 125GB.

Currently I have been able to use the diskutil cs resizeStack command to shrink my 200GB disk to 125GB. But am unable to expand my second CoreStorage volume to 125GB since its Logical Volume Group doesn't contain the free space I generated.

If I try to resize the logicalVolume, or the Stack or the Disk they all get the same error:

How do I remove photos from my iPhone, but leave the photos marked as favorites?

I use a PC to manage my iPhone. I need to move my photos to my laptop to back them up/make space on my phone. Is there a way I can move all the photos, except for the ones I've marked as favorites?

Error code -65541

This error code pops up in a dialog on my MBP with 10.10.2 and doesn't go away until I restart. I tried quitting all open applications but it still didn't go away. It wouldn't even let the system restart so I had to do a hard power off (long press power button). Does anyone know what this is about ?

Cloudd wants to use the "Local items" keychain

I opened my MBP and certainly the system gives the following warning "Cloudd wants to use the "Local items" keychain" and asks me for my keychain-password. After cancelling this warning, it kept coming back, over and over again. After a forced quit and a system reboot the warning was gone.

I never had any idea why my system whould ask for my password at that time, was someone uninvited trying to access my computer? Who or what is Cloudd (double-d)?

Combining CharacterViewer with FontBook in Yosemite

I used a OS X 10.5.8 system for several years and now I am using a new laptop with the latest Yosemite. I find some features of the older system are much more powerful than the newest one. For example, the Character Palette of my old computer is like a combination of strengthened versions of today's CharacterViewer and FontBook.

The CharacterPalette of old could display all the characters (with their Unicode info) of a given font in a FontBook manner and still fully interact with any text editor.

Today’s CharacterViewer has practically no interaction with font information. It is not possible to give CharacterViewer a font and ask it to display all the available characters in that font. CharacterViewer can only display all characters (without consideration of any font) in their order according to Unicode (and a few other encodings, but I'm interested in fonts not encodings). Also, when CharacterViewer displays the font variants of a given character it only displays the shapes and not the font names. The user has to click each shape drawing individually to see what is the name of the font it corresponds to. The older interface which automatically displayed the font name next to the glyph was much simpler and user-friendly.

I found those now-disappeared features incredibly useful as I wrote articles on ancient texts involving many unusual characters. Is there any reasonable chance to restore those features on a Yosemite system ?

Why does Yosemite Safari never time out trying to go to *.local?

On the version of the Safari web browser that's included with Mac OS Yosemite, trying to go to any web site whose hostname ends in ".local" will cause the browser to sit there forever waiting for a response, never timing out. For example, "http://foobar.local" or "https://baz.qux.local". Same thing happens when running Safari in the iOS Simulator on a Mac (but on a real iOS device, the request properly times out).

I'm just curious - why is this? Is it likely to be a Safari bug, or a networking thing in Yosemite that I could fix by editing some config file?

I'm working on a web site that uses different URLs for media, and when running the site locally (for development) we use .local hostnames for the media sites, which used to work fine as long as /etc/hosts points these hostnames to 127.0.0.1. But now under Yosemite it's causing these requests to hang. Before I update the URLs in our code and tell all our dev to update their hosts file with new hostnames, I wanted to see if there might be a simpler fix.

I have a terminal shortcut on my dock which I use every day. Depending on my monitor setup (extra, 2 extra, etc.) to my Macbook Pro, I like to have a different launching scheme (either 4 windows or 5 windows).

Is there a way to have 2 (or more) terminal launchers on the dock, one which launches the "4 windows" setup and one which launches the "5 windows" setup?

"Open Link Behind Mail" in Mail.app not working

When on my Mac I right click on a link in mail and select "Open Link Behind Mail" nothing happens.

I tried opening Console and seeing if there was an error message when I did it again, but I didn't notice anything new. (I looked in "SYSTEM LOG QUERIES > All Messages")

This was working a few months ago. I am using Mail 8.2 (2070.6) and OS X 10.10.2 (14C109)

Bootswatch simbol in chrome tab

A strange thing happen to my chrome web browser, and I don't know why, I hope you can help me.

In my chrome tabs the bootswatch symbol appears in the tab icon even when I'm not in the bootswatch website!!

I have already uninstalled the chrome browser using the AppCleaner.app, and I also checked if I had some weird extension installed.

I really don't know why this happens, it is strange. I am programming in ruby on rails and I have browsed and tried bootswatch, but I don't know why this has affected my browser!

Any help?

This interface bridge100 have been introduced with Mavericks and exists on Yosemite. (On Mountain Lion the same kind of mechanism was taking place with the bridge0).

This interface is related to the starting of Internet Sharing. When Internet Sharing is off:

I have big Swift project. It's about 40 ViewControllers 2 storyboards and some frameworks. When I make some changes XCode begins indexing all the project and it takes a very long time!!! How can I disable indexing and compiling some unnecessary swift files?

Using Earpods on PC with TRRS to 2xTRS splitter

I just purchased a 4-pin to 2x3-pin audio adapter to use my earpods on a PC. However when I test the microphone all I can hear is a high pitched noise. The earpods are confirmed working on a retina MBP and android phone (everything works on MBP, mic + centre button works on android phone but no volume control as expected). I have tested a pair of beats in-ear earphones with the new splitter, and they're working perfectly (audio + mic). The beats earphones also work with my MBP. Any ideas on why the earpods don't like my splitter? I'm fairly certain beats and apple use the same CTIA standard.

I discovered ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter was using almost 2GB (much of this seems to have been migrated from a Mavericks installation - even less than useless). Manually pruning this seems to be inordinately time consuming. I would like to automatically limit this to a reasonable size.

What is the recommended partition scheme for mac os x?

I did a clean install of yosemite on my MacBook Pro. I have not partitioned my hard drive and have left everything by default. I would however like to use the recommended schematic for Linux systems (Partition for the OS (root directory), Partition for /Home and one for my data). Is there a way to do this with mac? I am not aware that i could have done this during the installation process especially choosing a partition for the OS. Furthermore I wonder if it would be possible to partition the HD after the installation and move all the data later. I'm looking for some kind of guidance how I can do that clean.

App store review team - Do they report just first bug they found?

If app store review team rejects your app, can you be sure that the issue they found is the only one? Or they just stop reviewing once they encounter an issue?

I'm asking because I'm not sure whether to double check the whole app or just fix the problem they found and go ahead once again. I'm not really into wasting another 9 days to wake up with another rejection.

So, do they report all the issueas they found or the first one they noticed? Are there anybody out there who got reported more than one bug? It's worth to add that my rejection happend due to 2.3 paragraph which stands for "Apps that do not perform as advertised by the developer will be rejected"

I have a way to list all the accounts in Mac via terminal using the dscacheutil command. Is there any way to get to know if a particular account is a mobile account or not from the terminal?

How do I disable a launchd service I no longer have the plist for?

I delete an app that had some service running through launchd. Now launchd complains all the time in the console for not being able to launch the service:
