How to simulate multiple mouse clicks while holding the mouse button?

I want my mouse to rapidly auto-click when I hold the left mouse button and to stop as soon as I release the left button. How can I do this?

I have searched for hours, I didn't find anything! Is there possibly a way to do it with AppleScript? Or if there's a free application that can do this, it's perfectly fine too.

Where have the photos gone from my daughter's friend's iPad?

My daughter has backed up her friends iPad to our iMac, which has recognised this iPad as my daughter's and so when her friend opened her iPad, all her photos had been replaced with my daughter's.

Is there any chance that the friend's photos will have been saved before being replaced with my daughter's or are they gone for good?

Remove Bootcamp when Boot Camp Assist will not

I purchased an iMac from a buddy and recently upgraded to Yosemite so I am learning as I go about Macs. However, I decided I wanted it to be quicker so I purchased an OWC SSD to install as a primary and use the 1TB HDD as a secondary. Before the install I wanted to remove everything and that included the partition for Boot Camp that shows up:

enter image description here

After reading several tutorials and watching a few videos it suggested going to Boot Camp Assistant but every time I go I get this:

enter image description here

Per this question "Boot Camp Assistant: “Your disk could not be restored to a single partition." it says Click "Erase" and select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" but this doesn't do anything in Yosemite.

I've tried downloading the latest to a USB drive but that doesn't do anything either.

So my question is in Yosemite how do I remove the partition from Macintosh HD completely?

How to view path of Dock Icon

How can I view the path of the pointer in a Dock item?

Menu bar in emacs (mostly) stops working

I'm not sure how to reproduce it, but sometimes after running fine for a while, the menu bar in emacs stops working except for the Apple and Emacs menus. The others (e.g., File, Edit, Options) all light up when I click on them, but the menu does not appear. I've moved all the windows out of the way, so it's not that the menus are getting obscured.

If I change buffers so there are new modes (and minor modes) active, the menu names change appropriately, but they still don't work.

I also tried creating a new frame but that didn't help.

The only solution I've found so far is to quit & restart emacs.

This is with Emacs 24.4 (MacPorts build) on Mavericks.

How exclude a specific folder from spotlight search but not from search window?

I'm trying to set up my Mac so that it will exclude files in a folder called 'XYZ' from the search results in spotlight only. The reason is because these files are mostly private, and I don't want them to pop up in a spotlight search.

However, I still want to be able to search them in a finder window, where I have a little more control than in spotlight. (To be clear, search normally with alt+command+space, exclude folder from command+space). Any idea how something like this could be done?

Fix Recursive Partition (Boot Camp Windows Partition Still Detected After Deletion)

I recently deleted the Windows Partition I had on my Macbook Pro (Mid 2014) which I had installed using Boot Camp. I followed the uninstall instructions in the second section of Apple's website, here.

Unfortunately, if I restart my Macbook, it automatically boots up to the "Windows partition" - which is really just a blue screen which tells me an error occurred, some files are missing, and then asks me to press F8 or Enter. Pressing either key just causes the screen to go black momentarily and then return to the original error page.

After playing around in GParted, it turns out that my Mac has a "recursive partition" on it which led to a bad partition table which in turn screwed up a lot of stuff.

How can I remove this ghost partition?

What does an "All" nested group do in a "Match All" Smart Playlist?

When creating a Smart Playlist, what does placing a "All of the following are true" nested group when the playlist is set to "Match all of the following rules"?

enter image description here

I've tried reading through it logically a few times, and I always end up with it not actually contributing to the flow of the smart playlist. If all the items in the nested group have to be true, and all the items directly under parent must be true, it seems that this configuration would only serve as a way to group similar items to a user's preference.

Is there a logical precedence that I am missing where having a "match all" nested group on the first level of a "match all" smart playlist makes sense?

Is there a security tools package for Mac OS X?

I mean a package of tools like those in the Kali Linux distribution.

Correctly removing the default Python installation

I intend to replace the default Python installation with the one from Homebrew. Below is a list of steps that I want to take, but I first want to make sure that I'm not doing anything destructive, which is why I'm posting this question. :-)

  1. The Python.framework folder is located in /System/Library/Frameworks. Is it okay to remove it? Being under System I worry that I might break something.

  2. Remove all Python related files from /usr/bin. In my case (and probably everyone else's), I'll be removing everything given by ls -l /usr/bin | grep python:

    • python

    • python-config

    • python2.6

    • python2.6-config

    • python2.7

    • python2.7-config

    • pythonw

    • pythonw2.6

    • pythonw2.7

  3. In my case I also have pip installed. The only reference to pip I found is in /usr/local/bin. To also uninstall pip I'll delete the files given by ls -l /usr/local/bin | grep pip:

    • pip

    • pip2

    • pip2.7

Is there anything else that I should be doing to do a complete and correct uninstall? Are there any dangers that I should be aware of?

Native Youtube app suddenly stopped working on iPad 1

It's been some weeks now, whenever I try to used my Youtube app, it tells me it's impossible to connect to Youtube. Since it's an iPad 1, I have had trouble finding information online.

Did Google or Apple stop supporting the app? Is it finally obsolete? Is there another app I could use that works on iOS 5?

Just to be clear, I did not tinker with my device. I did not change its parameters, I did not jailbreak it, it connects to the Internet just fine and I've tried the app on different Internet connections. Also, this is not a login problem, the app just refuses to let me browse videos, whether I'm logged in or not.

Thanks for your help.

My Mac isn't locking when I put it to sleep

If I go  -> Sleep or even hold the power button, my Mac goes to sleep but when I go to wake it up I immediately see the screen I'd put it to sleep on. Before I was asked for my password again upon waking my Mac. I know that you can quickly tap a key after using the power button shortcut to prevent it going to sleep and you won't be locked out, but even after having my Mac in sleep all night last night and waiting a few seconds or minutes before attempting to wake it today I'm not prompted for my password which worries me because I have sensitive information throughout my Mac.

I have just deleted everything in ~/Library/Preferences/ in hopes it would fix bugs. Was that a mistake? Could that be the reason I'm having this issue? Should I go ahead and restore my machine to prevent other weird bugs which may have come up because of that?

May I remove Python.framework in $PATH enviroment variable?

I recently upgraded Python (via downloaded .dmg files) and now when I run the command:

$ echo $PATH

the terminal returns the following two, new lines.

/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.4/bin

Before, my $PATH looked like this

/usr/local/bin
/usr/bin
/bin
/usr/sbin
/sbin

I've noticed that my ~/.bash_profile has only the following content:

# Setting PATH for Python 3.4
# The orginal version is saved in .bash_profile.pysave
PATH="/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.4/bin:${PATH}"
export PATH

# Setting PATH for Python 2.7
# The orginal version is saved in .bash_profile.pysave
PATH="/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin:${PATH}"
export PATH

So, if the original versions are saved in their respective, python-specific .bash profiles, can I delete this content from my ~/.bash_profile?

Why would these duplicates be added to ~/.bash_profile in the first place?

Thanks for any advise.

Thanks

How to prevent an iPad from grabbing Apple ID for "Itunes and App Store" when plugged into a Mac?

I work as an iOS developer and have a number of development iPads at work. They are generic ipads used for testing and demos, none should apple ID.

When I plug such iPad into my mac, two things seems to happen:

  1. iTunes opens and offers me to "set up my new iPad", even if it is already setup

  2. I close iTunes

  3. I unplug the iPad, but now it has my personal apple ID remembered in "iTunes and app store" in preferences.

Now at random intervals the ipad asks me for the password for this user ID. I think it even tries to convert that into an iCloud ID. Even worse, I randomly get popups saying "[some random generic company ipad] now uses my apple ID for facetime and iMessage".

How can I permanently lock generic iPads into something so it does not grab my personal apple ID and use it?

My Bluetooth Signal Decreased After Upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite

When I was running Mavericks 10.9.5 on my Mac Mini Server my bluetooth keyboard stayed connected during startup and restarting. My bluetooth keyboard is within a foot of the Mac Mini Server.

When the login screen appeared I may have waited a few seconds for the bluetooth keyboard to connect. The icon showed a full signal.

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2. At first the keyboard would lose connection from time to time. It continued even with new batteries. I noticed that the icon shows a grayed out signal with three black dots. The keyboard is in the same location. I also started having problems with the keyboard disconnecting when starting or rebooting my computer.

I contacted Apple several times about this. I went through different things including putting new batteries in the keyboard and going through steps to unpair and have Bluetooth rediscover the keyboard. This got me to the point where the keyboard quit disconnecting while using it. However it did not solve the problem when I started or rebooted my computer. I had to turn off the keyboard and turn it back on to get it to connect.

I contacted them again in utter frustration. The specialist walked me through a SMC reset followed by a PRAM reset. It works from time to time. However the last time I rebooted my computer I had to turn off and turn on the computer again. They also sent me a link to what could be causing problems with bluetooth. None of them applied to my situation.

The only change in my setup is the upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite.

Has anyone had this problem and was able to solve it? I'm submitting this question because all the solutions I have seen online I have tried but still have this problem.

Old iPad not charging

"Identical" DMGs: one installs, one does not

We've got a DMG from a vendor that we put on our web server for download. After download, the file on my Mac (OSX 10.10.1) is identical to the original file (did a hex compare), and the DMG mounts fine... but the installer inside the DMG will not work after download.

To put it a different way, I have two seemingly identical DMG's, both of which mount, but only one of which will actually run the installer in the image, once mounted.

The permissions were slightly different between the two DMG's after download. Changed them so they are now identical.

We've tried this on three Macs with at least two versions of OSX, and the results are the same.

What else could be wrong? Is there anything in the OS security settings that could have saved some information about the file having come from the internet and blocking the installer somehow? If so, where?

Mac Speakers Malfunction

My speakers stopped working. All of the other sources say that I need to blow air into the headphone jack, or type

sudo killall coreaudiod

In my terminal window. I have not seen anyone put a screen shot like the one I am getting though. Is this the same problem? I have not gotten around to trying these yet but I will today, if they don't work what else should I try?

Force aspect ratio with crop on external monitor while mirroring display

When I connect my Macbook Pro to an external monitor with a different aspect ratio than 16:10 (which the Macbook Pro has) and let it mirror my display, the resolution is automatically changed to something that fits the external monitor. Also, my MacBook Pro screen is cropped.

Can I change this around? I want to force a certain aspect ratio, and force the external monitor to crop its display.

I can't download garageband sounds I purchased

I installed Garageband 10.0.3 on my MacBook Pro 2013 when it was running Mavericks. I then purchased the additional sounds. I delayed downloading them all because at the time I didn't need them right away. I installed Yosemite, and now want to download them, however when I go to GarageBand > Download More Sounds the option is grey and clicking on it does nothing. I tried signing into the Appstore and opening Garageband through there, and it didn't work. I've restarted Garageband several times but with no luck. I'm wondering if I need to reinstall it, however I'm not quite sure how to do this. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. If you need more information or this question needs to be edited, please let me know. Thank you for your time.

How much data has been written to my SSD over its lifetime?

Is there a Terminal command which will show me how many GB has been written to my SSD through the whole lifetime of the disk? I'm asking because I want to find out how many cycles have been done. SSD are able to do about 1000–2000 cycles depending on type.

Macbook pro temps and Video editing

I bought a Macbook pro several months back. Late 2013 15" Retina ( Core i7 2.3GHz 4850HQ, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB PCI-E SSD, 2GB Nvidia GT750m + Iris Pro graphics )

I wanted a portable computer to do heavy tasks like Video editing using Premiere Pro CC, AfterEffects CC, Final Cut Pro and to run Heavy virtual machines. I normally run 3 or 4 VMs at same time for my software development tasks. beside I use this for professional video editing tasks 4K video editing. I know for Pro video editors use Mac Pros but i wanted a portable machine.

Is it okay to run these heavy tasks all the time in my Macbook pro ? When doing some 4K rendering CPU/ GPU hits around 100C for hours. I need ideas about high temps and this heavy usage, and Lifetime about my laptop ??

Alternative ways to switch between applications if cmd+tab doesn't work

What are alternative ways to switch between applications?

Cmd+tab doesn't work for me in some games (for example, "Crusader Kings II", "The Talos Principle" on steam). So i have no ability to switch to another application (like Safari) when nided unless I quite the game. This is very inconvenient. I tried also Cmd+H and Cmd+Alt+H, they doesn't work ether. Cmd+Alt+Esc force quits the game immediately.

This macbook pro was updated to Yosemite and the kernel panic occurred, then it's downgraded to 10.9.3, and now I clean-installed 10.9.2 on it to see if the problem went away but it's still there.

I deleted AudioAUUC.kext but it's still happening. here is the new kernel panic report:

Where did music scan go on my iOS 4.2 iPod Touch 2nd Gen?

A week ago, I had a slider when playing music that let me scan through music really quickly. Now it's gone. Here's a screenshot:

enter image description here

Did I change a setting or something? I can't find anything about it. The slider used to be near the top. I only have the standard fast-forward/rewind buttons now.

Window bar not hiding while in full screen mode in Acrobat Pro

I'm preparing for a presentation and when I am in fullscreen the upper window bar won't hide like it used to.

Any ideas how to fix this? Here is a screenshot attached.enter image description here

Does Home Sharing require Internet access for movies?

Experience already tells me the answer is 'yes', but I'm curious if anyone has a reference.

Recently, my cable internet went out. I think: no problem, I've got all kinds of purchased movies and TV shows already downloaded, so I'll watch them until the internet comes back!

I can see the library from my (3rd gen) Apple TV, and choose an episode, but when I try to play it, I get the loading spinner. It just hangs until the screensaver comes up.

Meanwhile, I am able to play (DRM-free) music over AirPlay from the library. And Home Sharing appears to be fully authorized--I can control the Apple TV from my phone, I can see the full iTunes library, etc.

Can it be that the Apple TV is trying to phone home every time I play I locally-downloaded, purchased item?

Our 5th gen. ipod is Disabled how do I reset it w/o computer

My 5th gen. ipod is Disabled cuz my son put to many wrong password in. How DO I fix a/o computer or iTunes. I JUST want to restore. Nothing important on ipod. Thanks. Oh I've tried holding on/off w circle button at same time

Customize existing keyboard layout

I need to invert the behaviour of 2 key in my keyboard ("<" is inverted with "\").

I can do this easily with "Karabiner", but for me is a solution without an explanation.

I'm linux user and usually a do this directly from "terminal".

So, if Karabiner can do the trick, I suppose that I can do it too!

How can I modify a layout "programmatically" from terminal? Where layout configuration are stored?

Creating an addition and subtracting forumla in Numbers for Mac

how do I enter a sum forumla in numbers for mac. I'm creating a financial spreadsheet and need to ask the spreadsheet to calculate the new balance after subtracting and adding sums. For example: I want to calculate the running total in E column. I have an amount in E3 the spreadsheet will need to subtract the amount in c4 and add the amount in d4 to achieve the current amount. Everytime I've tried to do this I've received an error message

Kernel panics after hibernation, MD101, Yosemite

After installing Crucial 16 gb kit and Sandisk Ultra II SSD 240 Gb (instead HDD) I have experienced many kernel panics. It was only after long sleep, and not immediately, but after some minutes.

I checked RAM with memtest several times, NO ERRORS.

I disabled hibernation at all, and problem is gone. But sleep mode is draining my battery.

I think the problem in SSD.

It is possibly to have hibernation on my macbook and no kernel panics?

Thank you!

How can I create beautiful drawing with Microsoft word in Macbook?

I want to create nice drawings in my documents using Microsoft word in my macbook pro. I am unable to find Canvas option in the mac version which is present in the Windows counterpart. The result is that all the shapes are going haywire with jumbled formatting whenever I add any text above it.

What are the tips to create good presentable drawings in spite of this canvas handicap?

color picker magnifying glass missing

I am running Yosemite and the color picker is supposed to have a magnifying glass. Except I do not have this and cannot turn it on. I do not see the magnifying glass as shown between the tool bar and the colour wheel.

Apple Yosemite Server configure secure website

I am running Server 4.0.3 on a Mac Mini running Yosemite 10.10.2 and am having trouble with setting up a secure website.

In my DNS, I have a primary zone with a machine record for my website,e.g. www.abccompany.com. In the website settings on Server, in addition to the default website of Server Website and Server Website (SSL), I have my website, www.abccompany.com for all addresses on port 80. I can access this from both within my lan and from the wan.

I have added an additional site for www.abccompany.com but as a secure website on port 443. If I try and go to this website securely using http://ift.tt/1LbDvyG, I get shown my routers log in page which happens to be 172.16.20.254. The server's IP address is 172.16.20.1.

Does anyone know why Server is forwarding requests to the secure site of www.abccompany.com to my router's IP address and how to fix it.

Many Thanks

Paul

Moving iOS notes

I'd like to do a few things, either:

  1. Safely move my iOS notes to the OS X Notes app

That is, sync my existing notes with the OSX Notes app and then delete the couple of thousand notes from the iOS app. I assume this would be done via iCloud, but I'm not sure how to save my notes permanently on my Mac and subsequently delete them off my iPhone.

  2. Mass email my existing notes into Evernote

I've found plenty of suggestions on how to sync any new notes with Evernote or the OS X Notes app, but nothing about moving existing notes.

(I've tried exporting them with iExplorer and CopyTrans but I instantly noticed that a lot of notes were missing, so it's not the most reliable option. And given that since iOS 7 you can't even see your notes count, I have no way of knowing if the number of notes that other exporting apps - such as PhoneView - show the real amount.)

The majority of them are important academic notes and I absolutely need to get them off my iPhone onto my Mac, but it seems a lot more difficult than it should be.

Any suggestions?
