Why can't an iPhone 6 and a mid-2011 MacBook Air see each other in AirDrop?

I'm trying to transfer photos, for example, from an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3 to a MacBook Air, mid-2011, running OS X 10.10.2.

In either of these scenarios:

  • iPhone set to be discoverable by Everyone

  • Finder open to AirDrop on the Mac

  • Select a photo on iPhone, select Share, the Mac does not appear in the AirDrop pane

or

  • iPhone set to be discoverable by Everyone

  • Pick a photo on the Mac, select Share, Airdrop, no devices appear in the Send via AirDrop dialog

I have successfully used AirDrop from this Mac to other Macs in the past. Any idea why it isn't working with my iPhone? (I should point out that other features of Yosemite, such as receiving phone calls and SMS from the iPhone on the Mac, are functioning properly.)

Out of storage space in X11 app

I have a app that runs in X11 and it seems to be ok except that I get out of space issues even though I have plenty of space on my home drive. Is there some setting or way to increase this? Please help!

Old version of iOS app after Time Machine restore

Running OSX 10.10.1 Yosemite. Xcode 6.1.1. I was running 10.10 and it was terribly slow, so I did a back up with Time Machine, and did a clean install of 10.10. It made everything much faster, if anyone was wondering. I used Migration Assistant and when I went to open my project, it was a version that is almost 6 months old.

The only thing that I could think of is that was probably the last time I made a commit to my local git repository. But if that is the case I would hope that the files are available somewhere. Any help is much appreciated.

Is a 1.4GHz Macbook Air worth it?

I'm willing to buy a MacBook. I'd use it to code and minor photoshop and video edit stuff.

I live in Brazil - Macs are really expensive here.

I found some deals and I can get a 13" Macbook Air 1.4GHz i5 4GB Ram 128GB SSD for R$ 3250 - ~1200 dollars. However, i'm afraid of it's performance. I can get a Retina 13" MacBook Pro i5 2.6GHz/8GB/128GB SSD for R$ 4300. That's a huge difference, but If it's worth i'm willing to save money and buy it.

What are your suggestions? Thanks!

How to disable the scrolling on OSX Safari?

What I would like to be able to do is set a certain part of a webpage in the viewport of Safari and then "Lock" the scrolling temporarily so that I can't accidentally scroll up or down and move what I have setup in that window.

Xcode giving me warning for GADBannerViewDelegate

I'm trying to implement Singular class AdMob banner that would be shared among several ViewControllers.

I'm receiving a warning from Xcode 6.1 and I don't understand why i'm getting the following warning:

'Incompatible pointer types sending 'MyClass* ' to parameter of type "MyOTHERclass *'

I included GADBannerViewDelegate in MyClass.h and MyOTHERclass.h files so I don't know why I'm receiving a delegate warning.

What does this warning want me to do?

Here's the code with warning:

-(void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated{

[super viewWillAppear:animated];

static MyOTHERclass share;

share=[MyOTHERclass singleton];

[share resetAdView: self]; // <-- Xcode is giving me the warning because of SELF

Finding old versions of iPad apps

Want to get an old version of Pages from an iPhone 4 (ios7) onto iPad 1 (ios5)but my iCloud and computer both have newer version of Pages for my iPhone 5s and I am pretty sure it will overwrite the old version of Pages. Also looking for a place to get older versions of google Docs & Sheets. The answer here: Finding old versions of iOS apps (for 5.1.1 on a 1st Generation iPad) does not work.

Disable/turn off lock screen ios 8

Why is Image Capture showing two copies of every photo in my iPhone camera roll?

I use Image Capture to import photos from my iPhone. I noticed recently that it shows two copies of every photo in the Image Capture window, both in list view and grid view.

There is only one copy of each photo in the iPhone camera roll, and when I drag them to a folder it only creates one copy of each. So it's not really causing a problem, but I'm curious why it is happening. I first noticed it in 10.10.1, and it continues in 10.10.2

See the screenshot below for an example. It is displaying two copies of IMG_6173.JPG and two copies of IMG_6172.JPG. There's only one copy of each in the camera roll. If I select all four and drag them to the desktop, it will create only one copy of each.

diskutil shows Macintosh HD is missing (with Recovery HD occupying the entire space)

So yesterday I managed to screw up my iMac 2012 (with Fusion Drive) by installing the Mac OS 10.2.2 update... The installation stalled and when I tried to restore from an external drive using Time Machine I somehow managed to corrupt my hard drive... When I try to reinstall OS X it says I don't have any disks to install it to.

Anyways, now I'm running Disk utility on the command line at boot and I see the Macintosh HD volume has disappeared. Here are the screenshots:

diskutil list diskutil info /dev/disk1

It seems that the Recovery HD disk is occupying the entire disk space (3TB). How do I restore Macintosh HD with a new partition so I can finally reinstall OS X?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Trashing .Trash and Emptying Trash

I don't want to sound stupid, but what happens if someone were to delete the .Trash folder using Finder and emptied it.

I know it's possible unless there is something that just stops it from happening.

  1. defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES; killall finder can be used to show the folder.

  2. Then go to ~/ in finder and delete .Trash.

  3. Open trash from dock then empty it.

What would happen?

How to set Macbook pro to turn off when closing lid?

Are links in Podcasts show notes supposed to be "live"?

Most podcasts have show notes that describe the individual episode. In iTunes, you can see these show notes by clicking on the episode, then clicking on the "i" at the right of the episode description; in the iOS Podcasts app, you can see these show notes by tapping the podcast's "album art" in the Now Playing screen.

Often these show notes are written to include links to web sites, but AFAIK neither iTunes nor the iOS app treat these links as other than plain text; there does not seem to be any way to actually open them. See for example the screenshot below; notice that in the middle of the paragraph (about five lines down) the words "click here" appear, but are non-functional.

Screenshot

I suppose it is possible that the the responsibility for this rests with the publisher (i.e. maybe they are just copy/pasting text from their website and not properly coding the episode description) but if so it seems to be a universal problem; I've never seen a podcast in which this did work. It seems more likely to me that neither iTunes nor iOS is set up to handle live links in episode descriptions.

Am I right about this? Are those links supposed to work? Or am I just doing something wrong?

iMovie 10.0.6 for Yosemite help needed

Help!! I'm lost with the interface for iMovie 10.0.6. I have created iMovies with previous versions of iMovie (the most recent being iMovie 9). When I installed and then opened iMovie 10.0.6 on my MacBook Pro running Yosemite, it also imported every last movie and clip I'd ever used and placed them in Events and Projects with no rhyme nor reason (at least not apparent to me). Now I can't seem to create a new Event or Project without part of a previous project being a part of it. I'm lost - obviously - and no, I'm not computer illiterate just iMovie illiterate I guess!! I'd love a written tutorial on using iMovie 10.0.6 that starts with the very basics but have been unable to find one -- I do better with written directions that watching YouTube videos - I need that step by step. Any suggestions from anyone? either on a resource (I did find one book but looking through it I realized that even though the book was published in Dec. 2014, it was not using the Yosemite version of iMovie). - if not a resource, can someone please explain how I start out with a project from scratch? I have a big project I'd like to begin - digitizing all my vhs videos of my kids and eventually creating DVDs of them. Worst case scenario, I go back to iMovie 9 or even 6, LOL. Thanks in advance!

How do I add the Gmail app to my sharing options (i.e. from photos)?

I've installed the Gmail app on my iPhone 5s (running iOS 8.x). However, when I'm done taking a photograph (or directly from within the Photos app), if I choose to share I'm presented with a list of options (Mail, Messages, Facebook, etc.) and the Gmail app isn't one of them.

If I go a step further and click the More link to see the list of all apps on the phone for which sharing can be enabled, the Gmail app isn't even in that list (while things like Slack.com and other apps I use are).

I use the stock Mail app for my work (Exchange) account, and I could if I wanted share a photo just fine using this, however I prefer the Gmail app's categories of mail.

Do you know a set of steps that can get the Gmail app to appear in this list of sharing options?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, please advise if you need more details or clarification.

Local web server

I'm running OS X Yosemite and I'm trying to setup Apache so I can access files over my WiFi for my Chromecast application (runs using NodeJS).

So I followed some tutorials online (http://ift.tt/1us3OWK) and I can access my websites at:

http://localhost/~cameron/examplefolder

I can also access something at:

cameron.local Although I don't know where the file lives that I see for this???

Anyway when trying to access the contents of examplefolder on say my iPhone, etc, I can't do it! Because of my use of localhost.

I thought I could just replace localhost with my ip address... but when I enter my ip address nothing happens... I just get an endless loading.

How do I solve this?

To confirm the issues:

  1. IP address does not work..

  2. Cameron.local does not load the same content as localhost or localhost/~cameron

Why is my iOS simulator trying to access irs.gov while debugging my app?

I'm developing an app that has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than specific external audio-related hardware. While running my app in the iOS simulator, I got a message from my LittleSnitch (that's a firewall) that the process geod (iOS) is trying to access irs.gov. As if that wasn't enough, the next attempt was to azadiradio.org. I blocked both but I'm wondering... what the actual hell is going on within my iOS simulator?

Linking between tables in Numbers

I have a table in numbers, and I want a cell to equal the value of a cell in a different table. Following the advice of this Apple discussion, I tried

=Units Sold::B2

, with Units Sold being the table with the value I wanted, and B2 being the value I wanted in the table "Units Sold".

enter image description here

To clarify, I want D2 of "Juice and Beverages" to equal the value of B2 of "Units Sold".

What am I doing wrong? Numbers for iCloud gives the error

The formula contains an invalid reference.

Thanks!

Is it possible to copy and paste iCal events in iPad / iPhone?

Is there any way to copy an event in iCal in iPad or iPhone and paste it to a different day? At times, I want to keep the original calendar entry, but repeat on a different day? I am not looking to use the repeat function, as that forces one to use more predictable repeat.

Apple Updater (Windows) Won't Download Updates?

Note: I am on Windows 8.1 64bit.

Is there any way to REMOVE alert default from All day events?

I have not been able to figure out a way to remove that default alert of one day events in iCal? Is there any way of doing it? I use quite a bit of full day events as remainders of things, and I hate that I always have to go and manually remove the alert of each event.

Automatically login to Mac even when using Apple ID as Mac account password

I use my Apple ID as my Mac's account password, so now I can't enable auto-login. Is there really no way to re-enable auto-login even if I'm using my Apple ID for my Mac account? Or is there something I can do to re-enable auto-login again so I don't have to type my password in every time I start up my Mac?

Sublime Text doesn't hide on startup

I added Sublime Text to my Login Items, so that it starts up automatically when I start up my Mac. However, even though I have the Hide box checked already, the app still does not hide on startup.

Is there anything else I can try to get it to hide on startup?

XCode change Comment SYMBOL

How can I keep my home address private when sharing my vCard?

Instead of handing over cumbersome (and likely to get lost) business cards, I like texting my vCard. However, I'd like to not share some of the information in my vCard—most importantly, my home address. Additionally, I taught Siri my entire extended family, which now gets shared with everybody I send my vCard to. This feels less than professional.

Here's the problem: I need my home address in my card if I'm going to get directions to Home using Maps. And I want Siri to know who's in my extended family. But I don't want to share this information when I share my vCard.

I sync my contacts through iCloud, so I was looking at my Mac's Contacts app to see if it had a solution. In Contacts preferences, I found this promising option: "Enable private me card": Contacts preferences vcard - enable private me card

What I was hoping for with a "private me card" was a way to set which pieces of information to share and which ones to keep private on a per card basis with just this one special "me card".

The only other solution I can come up with is to create 2 cards:

  • one for my own private use via Siri, Maps, etc

  • and another for sharing.

The downsides of this solution are that

  • it's inelegant (two vCards for one person) and

  • if a piece of information changes, I have to remember to update two cards, not just one.

Are there other options out there I haven't considered? Are there preferences in iOS, OS X, and/or iCloud that would solve this? And what is a "private me card"?

Slow Internet Problem On Yosemite

Internet connection is really so slow on MacBook Air 13' Yosemite . Called tech support of ISP and they said my connection is OK . My internet plan has 16 MBPS speed but when I do a speed test on my MacBook, it's just 2-3 MBPS . But in my mobile phone, internet connection is really good. So I thing I have a problem with Mac OS configuration.

These are my System Preferences > Network settings :

enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

BTW , connection is not slow always, sometimes it's getting better. For example it's took about 10 minutes to upload these 4 images, but now my connection is better.

Can you tell what should i do for better connection ?

Note : I can't try it without Wi-Fi , with an ethernet cable, because I don't have a ethernet slot on my Mac.

Can I simply swap a Time Machine SSD with the original one on an MBPro?

I need to replace the original internal SSD (256GB) with a 512GB that has Time Machine on it and up to date.

I am hoping it were not required to involve yet a third disk - e.g. another USB hard drive in this process .. but am not clear on it. Let us call this 1TBdrive

Specifically it seems one solution would be:

  • attach the 1TB hard drive and make it the time machine backup.

  • power off the MBPro and physically swap the 256GB with the 512GB

  • attach the 1TB USB hard drive and boot up, keeping the option button pressed to induce booting to time machine

  • restore from 1TB TM to the new 512GB internal drive

Unfortunately I do not possess this 1TB external drive. So is there any way to do this with just the first two SSD's?

ipod classic 160gb

I need help. I am literally at my wits end. I've had my 160GB IPOD A1238, Model number 2173. for just under a year. No I don't have the receipt because I expected Apple products to be quality. I am either going to throw it out of a window. Blow it up. Or use it as a paper weight if this doesn't work I spent so much money for this and it hasn't lasted even a year. Sorry to vent but really disappointed with this product.

I have plugged in my IPOD into 3 different laptops and all of them say to fix and repair the IPOD. I have done so many times. formatted many times. IPOD crashes ITUNES as well when connected. as soon as it is ejected itunes works fine again.

I'm not kidding about the methods of disposal for my IPOD if nothing works. I refuse to spend money on something that should easily be usable for minimum of 5 years.

This is the information from my SMART DATA test in diagnostics:

Retracts: 2

Reallocs: 16360

Pending sectors: 16

PowerOn Hours: 202

Start/Stops: 78.40

Temp: Current 28c

Can the iOS Facebook app set cookies in Safari?

There is already a similar question, but it hasn't received any useful answers. Given that Facebook recently changed their terms of usage, I think this needs an up to date answer. Given that I would only use Facebook via the iOS app, delete all Facebook cookies from my OS X and iOS Safaris, would I be "safe" from being tracked by Facebook while surfing the web?

I am aware that there are many other ways for me to be tracked by the website hosters, but let me take one step at a time.

Macbook Air mid 2013 on Yosemite hangs

I have come across this problem several times now before I finally decide I should try and be doing something about it. Basically this seems to be happening when I am multitasking with iTunes playing files stored on my local SSD, Safari open with multiple tabs, and a text editor / IDE for work, and I may have Preview, Excel and Mail open too. I have the Macbook Air Mid 2013 with i7 processor, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD, on Yosemite (pretty sure it happened on Mavericks too).

When my laptop hangs, the music is stuck on a frame and it just keeps on repeating it over and over. At that point the entire system is non responsive. The display, the keyboard, the sound, it's like flipping on a light switch but the bulb stays on. The only thing I can do is hold the Power button to force restart.

I suspect a problem with iTunes, but it could be with the OS itself. The problem is I don't have any crash report or stack trace to make sense out of this and the problem happens maybe once a week or two.

How would you guys troubleshoot something like that?

I do have a USB scanner, a USB numeric pad, and a Fitbit dongle connected to my iMac. I have been using these things for a long time without any problem though.

Also, I run Rember to check my RAM and it passed the test.

I used the Disk Utility to verify and repair both disk permission and the disk volume and everything seemed fine.

I used Apple Diagnostic Tool (Control D when restart the machine) and it did not find anything wrong.

Finally, I already reinstalled Yosemite but the panic kernel still showed up.

MacBook pro internal speakers mute

my internal speakers on my macbook pro just stopped working, they have disappeared from the sounds preferences control panel. the only option is 'optical digital outport'

the headphones still work, but there's a red light coming out of the headphone jack

help?

Kernel Panic on USB-HDD plug

What's wrong:

Since a few days I can't plug my TM disk without having a kernel panic.

What I've done wrong:

I've tried to install OSXFUSE from brew but I didn't succeed (note: I didn't try hard)

What I've try to fix the mess:

Uninstall the traces of OSXFuse (and ntfs-3G), boot in safe mode, fix the permissions, remove the useless loaded kexts.

My system:

MBP 15" 2011 - 10.10.2

What I'd love not to do to fix the bug:

  • format the USB-HDD

  • re-install Mac OS

(A piece of log will be provided as soon as the console will start)

Why Does A New Mac Pro Only Support a Single Internal Drive?

Every graphic-heavy application I have used has recommended storing files it uses on a separate disk from the boot disk (preferably an SSD), however with the new MP this isn't an option. The only way to utilise a second drive is as an external drive.

I'm assuming this isn't a problem in terms of performance, and from what I've read MPs are very performant, but why is this? Why can a Mac Pro get away with a single drive when most apps recommend using separate drives for boot and resources?

Why are my Mavericks Finder folders arranged by the wrong year?

I upgraded to Mavericks ages ago, but only just noticed this problem. Having arranged and sorted a folder by date modified, using icons, all items in the folder are listed as the wrong year. I have items grouped as being "Today", that's correct! But I then have "2013" items (which were all modified in 2014, I checked with Get Info) and "2012" items (which were all modified in 2013, again I checked them.

Why is this happening? How do I fix this?

Problem with my email account

I have my webmail (Exchange account) synced with my iPhone, iPad, MacBook. It works on iPad and iPhone but it says 'invalid email adress' on my computer. How can this be? Shouldn't it work through iCloud anyway?

Just bought MBPr and cannot connect to appstore

Whenever I try to connect to app store I got this error:

I tried everything I could find in internet, but always the same problem.

Any help?

MacOS X stability compared to other operating systems (freezes)

I'm coming from Windows. I was told that Macs are stable, that they rarely crash unlike windows.

So I got the base config of the latest MacBook Pro with retina. It had Yosemite installed, which I upgraded to 10.10.2. Everything looks pretty, but the system freezes sometime. I was able to reproduce one of the scenarios - opened VLC, played a video from a network computer - when I get disconnected from the network VLC freezes. After I force-quit it and try to reboot the Mac, the system freezes too. Another one, Finder freezed when I tried to open a .dmg file, couldn't reboot without holding the power button down for shutdown. After restart, the .dmg file was opened...

Anyway, I got to use this just for 2 days and it didn't make a very good impression to me. Do these kind of freezes happen often in Macs? I never had such issue in Windows 7. Programs crashed sometimes but they didn't took the whole system with them :|

Macbook air builtin keyboard and trackpad not working

Since yesterday, my mac's keyboard and trackpad is not working. More precisely keyboard is working but with a long lag whilst trackpad is not working at all.

This is when, I connect my laptop to a wireless keyboard and mouse, they work fine.

I have already did PRAM restart but nothing has changed. Did somebody experienced the same issue? can anybody help?

What is analogous to windows registry in mac os x?

I am new to mac and was wondering where application/OS setting are saved.

Why does Mac OS X requires repairing of permissions for maintenance while other OS (windows /Ubuntu) doesn't require it?

Please explain briefly why repairing of permission is one of the maintenance tool for mac os x exclusively . Why it isn't done on windows? Another question: What in mac os x is analogous to windows registry?

A Service That Can Approximate QuicKeys' Set Label

Ok, Yosemite craps out QuicKeys, by removing its ability to gain control...or at least I haven't gotten it to work. But, I did wongle up a service that does work -- to a degree. It will label a selection a color

What I'd like is this: If I select a file, label it a color If I select a folder, label the contents a color (If possible label a sub-folders contents a color)

Any known issue with Firefox 35.0.1 with Flash 16?

Symptoms: Macbook with Mountain lion 10.6.8 shows a beach ball after 20 minutes of watching streaming video from sites that do not support HTML5 video.

This is very recent so I suspect a Flash update OR a Firefox update issue (Fx 35 was released on 2015-01-13 which matches the start of the problem).

Only thing in the console that looks suspicious is mentioned in my other attempt to narrow it down

Quicklook plugin giving problems

But since Chrome does not seem to give the same problem, I suspect an update.

Switching permanently to Chrome is alas not an option

I have

  • Repaired file permissions

  • Refreshed Firefox

  • Run update checker

App Store doesn't fetch updates anymore

I'm on a MacBook Pro, mid 2009, OS X 10.10.

An update to Yosemite (10.10.2) came out five days ago, but going to the Updates tab in App Store only returns a dialog box with the following message:

An error has occurred
Can't connect to the Apple Software Update server.

I have turned off Firewall, logged out/in from App Store, removed App Store cookies - but despite this and after googling over an hour I'm still clueless.

Any ideas what could be the problem?
