How to setup two OS X boot partitions plus Bootcamp and Data?

Is it possible to set up he following combination of partitions; how?

  • two OS X partitions, each bootable (one for the main system, another for testing new OS X releases)

  • a Bootcamp bootable partition for Windows 7

  • data partition shared between OS X and Windows?

I have MacBook Pro 13" 2010.

iPhone 4S 64GB not charging unless switched off

Hope someone can help me here. My iPhone is simply not charging unless I switch it off while it is already plugged in. I suspect it to be a software problem, as when its off it charges. Windows does not seem to recognize the device but still charges when it is switched off.

I have tried cables that work on my friends phones and original cables, still no luck.

Any ideas?

Mavericks and Yosemite on macbook pro

My Macbook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) came preinstalled with Mavericks. Can I have Yosemite safely installed next to it on the same machine? If so, how?

Can't access password protected smb share

I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Router with an attached HDD which I'm trying to access with the ReadyShare feature. I've created 3 shared folders:

  1. no_pass (no password required)

  2. pass_write (password required for write access)

  3. pass_read (password required for read/write access)

The problem is that while I can access folder 1 (no password) fine, I can't connect to 2 or 3 in finder because I'm getting a permission denied error. When connecting to server, I've tried each of the following:

  • http://smbreadyshare(/share_name)

  • http://smbadmin@readyshare(/share_name)

  • http://smbadmin:password@readyshare(/share_name)

I've done all the above with cifs and replaced readyshare with the ip address but while 'no_pass' will mount without a problem, 'pass_read' and 'pass_write' give

permission denied screenshot

Note: smb://readyshare or smb://192.168.1.1 will both show a list of the shared folders but again, only 'no_pass' will mount. The others give the same error above.

I can connect to all the folders using http or ftp so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the shares...

Any idea what's going on here?

Completely uninstall iOS App and all associated data

Background

I am the server side developer working on an API for an IOS app. From time to time as we are in development (when we have big database changes) we reset our server. This process clears all the server side data for a member including any App device tokens used for push notifications.

Problem

At the same time as I reset the server database I have been trying to uninstall the app and delete any associated app data. I was hoping that if I did this the next time I install the App it would be like it was a first time download again. This is not working.

How I am doing this:

I have tried the steps listed on the following site http://ift.tt/182Cmei.

I have also tries uninstalling via the phone:

Under Settings > General > Usage > STORAGE > Manage Storage. I have been clicking on the app and then clicking Delete App;

Under Settings > General > Usage > ICLOUD > Manage Storage. I have been clicking on the current device, then selecting the app and turning off backup and deleting.

I had hoped that this would remove all data so that when I reinstall via Xcode or Test Flight App, the app would start just like a first time user again. However this is not happening, the app still seems to remember some settings, in particular it thinks I have already send my device token and wont prompt me for it again.

Question

How should I be uninstalling an app form a device so that all app data is removed and the next time a reinstall I am treated as a new user?

MPlayerX frame skip keyboard shortcut

While playing a video in MPlayerX the right and left arrows skip ahead and back 10s respectively. When paused, the right arrow goes ahead 1 frame but the left arrow still goes back 10s.

How do I skip only 1 frame back? Is there some way to assign the left-arrow-while-paused to do this?

Could the "Extra options" in the "advanced" section of the preferences be useful here? is there any documentation on how to use this?

Thanks

Strange Process in Activity Monitor. Unable to search online

I (somewhat) recently did a fresh install, and the system was feeling a bit sluggish after installing Chrome and some extensions so I checked the Activity Monitor and found the below process. Anyone know what it is? I can't seem to search for it as none of the search engines I tried would take the special characters.

How can I automate pasting of password into SecurityAgent?

On OS X 10.8.x I had an Automator service set up to paste a password from clipboard into the password window that pops up for mounting an encrypted disk.

I don't wish to store the password in my keychain, and it is long and tedious to type out.

I never got the applescript within the Automator service quite right. It would generate an error, but it still got the job done (i.e. the password was pasted). Since upgrading to Yosemite it seems the script in the Automator service doesn't work at all. The error generated indicates "window 1" doesn't exist.

Here is what I had:

tell application "System Events" to tell process "SecurityAgent"
set value of text field 1 of window 1 to (the clipboard)
if exists (text field 2 of window 1) then
set value of text field 2 of window 1 to (the clipboard)
end if
click button 1 of group 1 of window 1
end tell

I don't recall where I got this from, but some of it may have come from here

I know very little about AppleScript, and would appreciate some help fine tuning (or completely rewriting) this script so that it does the following:

  1. Checks there is data in the clipboard

  2. Checks the SecurityAgent window is active (or in some way ensures it can be interacted with, to avoid generating an error)

  3. Pastes the content of clipboard

  4. Clicks the 'Unlock' button

I don't know if it is possible, but it would be handy if it also brought 1Password to the foreground and activated "Copy password" (which is a menu option in the "Items" menu). I can, however, have Automator actions perform that task. But it would be nice to see (for learning) how to achieve that with AppleScript.

Outlook 2016 Exchange Error

I'm using the beta of the new Outlook 2016. When I try to add my own exchange account I constantly get the dialog telling me the server is being redirected. So then I tried to use the 'import' feature and grab the database from my Outlook 2011.

However! Once I hit the install button, I get this error: "the data contains an exchange 2010 SPP1 or older account". I can import the emails.. but I can't get the exchange server to sync. Is the company that supplies my exchange behind on their updates? Any help would be appreciated!

Best, Greg

How to set default finder window size?

How do I set the default size of my finder window to a size of my choice? Currently each time I open a finder window, it opens up in a very small size and I have to adjust it before I can start looking for my files. I'm running Yosemite.

Accessing the accelerometer in iOS while running in the background

I'm new to iOS programming. I'm wanting to write an app that has constant access to the accelerometer, and barometric pressure sensor of the iPhone 6, while running in the background.

In my research, I've found that people have done it using the Location Updates background mode, but this only worked for 10 minutes before the app was suspended (and this changed to 3 minutes in iOS 6?). I'd also read about using the audio background mode playing a mute sound as a way to work around that time limit. This seems like a substandard solution though.

I'm wondering then how an app something like Sleep Cycle does this, as it seems like it must have constant access to the accelerometer.

Random Restarts, GPU Panic

As of today, my 15" 2010 Macbook Pro has randomly rebooted twice within an hour. I'm including the Panic Report that was displayed after the computer rebooted.

I'm running OS X 10.10.2, connected to an external monitor via mini display port to VGA adapter, and I was using these applications when the reboots occurred:

  • firefox

  • vlc

  • skype

  • finder

My questions are: What's causing the problem? and what should I do to prevent this from ever happening again?

iPad loses songs

I'm using an iPad3 with iOS 8.1.2 and it loses songs. The iPad only contains songs I bought by iTunes. But the iPad deletes songs and I have to download them again. The missing songs were definitely not deleted by me and they was stored on the iPad (not cloud streaming).

Today I downloaded them again, free space was 2 GB. 6 hours later without using the iPad I have 5,3 GB free space and many songs are lost. It is possible to download them again, they are not on my iPad but in the cloud. Has anyone an idea how I can avoid this auto-deletes?

Thank You.

Is my computer "thrashing"? What amount of swap usage, faults would indicate a problem?

I've spent several hours hunting through google search results to no avail, so please forgive the awkwardly worded question.

I know that excessive swap usage causes thrashing, which causes performance issues. Every support document, forum post etc. I've read uses similarly ambiguous language like "too much" or "abnormal amounts" or "excessive". What I don't know, is what "excessive" means in this context. I've recorded some data from top, vm_stat and Activity Monitor. I have more available if it would help, I tried to only post the most important bits.

Does this indicate an issue with thrashing?

Will updating Mac OS affect my Windows/Bootcamp partition?

On Macbook Air, I have OSX 10.9.4 and it allows me to update to Yosemite, will this affect the Windows 7 partition that I installed using Bootcamp ?

How to mass-organize iTunes library?

I'd like to try to organize the songs in my iTunes library (rename artists and albums, etc.), but my library's pretty large and it would be time consuming to manually edit my songs via the Get Info screen.

Is there a way to mass-organize your songs? Ideally by exporting your library's song info to Excel, and then importing it back into iTunes?

I've tried exporting a playlist as a .txt file, editing it in Microsoft Excel, resaving it as a .txt file, and importing it back into iTunes, but my changes had no effect.

Is there a way to make `open -a` pass command line arguments to the app it launches?

I'd like to run OpenSCAD from the command line with some arguments.

$ open -a openscad myfile.scad

works as I expect.

$ open -a openscad --args --help

reports

LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed for the application /Applications/OpenSCAD.app with error -10810.

when OpenSCAD is not already running. When OpenSCAD is already running, then open -a openscad --args --help simply brings OpenSCAD to the foreground.

What I really need is for this to work:

$ open -a openscad --args -o myfile.stl myfile.scad

which works just like my previous example. What should I do to launch OpenSCAD with command line arguments?

Before hitting submit I reproduced my questions for pasting here, and I found a solution that more-or-less works. All of these seem to do what I expect, even if OpenSCAD is not already running.

$ /Applications/http://ift.tt/16v7wdj --help
$ /Applications/http://ift.tt/16v7wdj --args --help
$ /Applications/http://ift.tt/16v7wdj -o ball.stl ball.scad
$ /Applications/http://ift.tt/16v7wdj --args -o ball.stl ball.scad

Still, is there a way to make open -a pass command line arguments to the app it launches?

Advice for troubleshooting hard freezes associated with Safari? (Mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, 10.10.2)

I have a Macbook Pro 10,1 (Mid 2012) running 10.10.2. Over the last few months, I have had issues with the system suddenly hanging - mouse won't move, keyboard does nothing, and the clock is stopped. I have to hold down the power button and restart the computer when this happens.

I have been experiencing these freezes ranging from daily to weekly. There is no consistent action that reproduces the freeze on demand. At some point in the last few months, though, I did switch to Safari from Chrome as my primary browser because the battery life seems so much better when using Safari. I've been doing a project over the last week that is dependent on Chrome, and as such haven't been using Safari, and have had no freezes. In retrospect, I think the freezes began happening when I started using Safari regularly.

I'd prefer to not have to choose between using Safari and having a stable system. Is anyone aware of issues like the one I'm experiencing? Any suggestions for further troubleshooting?

Copy contents of a file

I am trying to copy a whole bunch different file's content into one big file. Is there a way to do this without having to open up each individual file and copying and pasting the contents? Is there a quick way to just right click a file and copy the contents directly? Thanks in advance!

iPhoto not launching after upgrade to Yosemite, I don't know how to execute the fix

I migrated a MacBook pro to a new iMac with Yosemite. I then upgraded iPhoto to v 9.6, and when I try to launch iPhoto, it does not launch, stating: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.

I found the fix to the problem on a related question on this site that references: http://ift.tt/1x7ki9b

This appears to address my issue, based on the error report. I've downloaded the replacement file, but I don't know where to put it. I don't seem to have a /library folder. Where should I be looking? Finder will not let me create a /library folder either.

iTunes slow movie download and does not resume after paused playback

iTunes 12.1.0.50 on OS X 10.8.5 MacBook Air is showing weird behavior recently. When I rent a movie from the iTunes store I have the following problems:

  1. download is incredibly slow (ETA keeps going up to several hours) and

  2. the movie will freeze when I unpause movie playback.

iTunes is basically unusable in this state. Did you ever come across a similar problem? Any ideas how to solve it?

What I tried so far (will update):

  • Onyx system cleanup

  • Re-download re-install iTunes

Can I make tmux scroll from my trackpad?

Transferring music from iPad to iPod without iTunes

how do i transfer music from my ipad to my ipod. The music has not been bought on itunes. I need something that is free to use. Thanks.

Why does the keyboard on my MacBook(s) stop working?

For the past few years across at least 4 MacBook Pro's or MacBook Air's, I have suddenly lost all input from the alphanumeric keys on my keyboard. The mousepad works, the computer runs, the arrow keys even work, but until I restart, the keyboard will not generate any input. The frequency of this occurring is a complex function of which computer I am using (the newest MacBook Air is worst), the OS X version I am running (Yosemite seems worst so far) and the task I am performing (marking up pdf files with Preview this weekend is causing a recurrence every 30-40 minutes). Lots of Internet searches have not uncovered any even remotely similar reported events.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Rob

Mirroring an iPad to a Samsung HDTV

I have an iPad 2 which I would like to mirror NBC Sports Live Extra to my Samsung TV. My cable provider, Verizon Fios Quantum (New York City), does not carry the channel but allows subscribers to access it online using their Fios account. I, like many others, are hoping that Apple will announce a brand-new 2015 Apple TV at tomorrow's (3/9/2015) press conference or in the very near future. Until then, other than using a variety of cables and adapters or devices such as Roku 3, is there any way to mirror my iPad? Would Chromecast do the job? Thank you

Retrieve file from iPhone 4s in recovery mode (No backup)

I have an iPhone 4s that was updated without being backed up first and that contains a voice memo file for a school project that is due tomorrow. The update failed, although the cause isn't known. It was over wifi and the wifi signal was strong and consistent. Maybe the actual internet service cut out. I don't know. Now, the phone has been replaced, so it no longer has cell service either. I've been asked to retrieve the file off of it.

I've tried hooking it up with iExplorer and it won't discover in there. I've also thought of jailbreaking it, but I'm not sure if that requires deletion of all the drive contents. I'm also open to breaking the thing open and somehow mounting the drive on another computer, but I'm not sure if there are adapters available for that or how possible it is. Maybe there's a way to restore and then recover the deleted files? Again, I don't know. I'm not typically an Apple user, although I do have access to Windows, Mac, and Linux OS's if need be.

iTerm2 runs my .zshrc twice

When starting a terminal in iTerm 2, my .zshrc is executed twice. Possibly has something to do with the "last login" printed at the top of terminal by iTerm? Anyone know how to fix this?

Example output, new terminal:

last login: Wed Mar 4 12:55:35 on ttys000

The mark of a good party is that you wake up the next morning wanting to
change your name and start a new life in different city.
-- Vance Bourjaily, "Esquire"

You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough.
-- William Blake

~ ❯❯❯ zsh

Oh, love is real enough, you will find it some day, but it has one
arch-enemy -- and that is life.
-- Jean Anouilh, "Ardele"

BBoD even after fresh install to new HDD

Got a bit of a weird issue which is driving me nuts, i have a Mac Pro tower which was purchased around 2010, it has been in storage for the past 2 years. Anyway I recently hooked it all up and found that i once i logged in i would hang when attempting to do anything really.

After some investigation i figured it was probably the HDD, it is about 5 years old at this point.

So I replaced the HDD and done a fresh install of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. At this point i have ran out of ideas, any help would be greatly appreciated.

MacBook shows it is charging when MagSafe is green

My MacBook currently shows this enter image description here even though the MagSafe charger has a green light.

Does anyone know why this is?

If it helps I am on a MacBook Air late 2010 with 819 cycle counts, 4,995mAh (currently), max capacity is 4,995mAh and the original capacity is 6,700mAh. I am also running make in terminal which has set my fans on and is making my computer lag a bit since it has a lot to install.

Could the issue be the process it using a lot of power?

Restore Applications folder to dock

I have inadvertently deleted my Applications folder from the dock.

I tried accessing the Applications icon in a finder window.

I tried to drag it down to the dock.

I did so to the lower left hand of the screen and now the Applications icon went away with a cloud image.

Now I have no access to my Applications.

How do I recover access to Applications?

Connect to https without SSL connection

When I am at college I sometimes need to access websites such as http://draw.io (for designing networks diagrams). The only issue is I cannot go to on my own laptop (MacBook Air) since the open Wi-Fi at college does not have SSL.

Is there a way how I can access sites like this?

I have tried both Safari and Chrome but none of them work.

I have also tried using a VPN (a Google Chrome plugin) however my college have blocked them. The only way for me to use sites that require SSL is using Tor.

If you need screenshots to make it clearer I will add them tomorrow (Monday) when I am at college.

I would like to use Safari instead of Chrome Since I will have to install it again.

How to get correct file permissions from Macports pip installs?

Macports sets up the ownership of its Python site-packages directory as root.wheel.

# ls -l -d /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages
drwxr-xr-x 151 root wheel 5134 Mar 8 10:56 /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages

This of course prevents individual users from using pip install to add packages, which is just fine since that really ought to be done as root.

However, if one uses sudo or a root shell to install, the packages are installed as readable only by root.wheel (740).

% sudo pip install BeautifulSoup
...
% ls -l -d /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages/BeautifulSoup.py
-rw-r----- 1 root wheel 79567 Mar 8 11:09 /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages/BeautifulSoup.py

This precludes my user account from actually importing or using the package, at least until I remember about the issue and chmod a+rX the proper permissions (744/755) onto the newly installed package files.

How can I get pip to always put reasonable permissions on installed packages?

Can I use the same time machine backup for two macs?

Is it possible to use the same time machine backup for two different machines? Is it possible to take the backup of my laptop and push it to my desktop? If I make changes to one machine do the changes go to the other machine?

I know I can restart and hold CMD + R and select a time machine. So far though the time machine backup is not recognized. I ended up with two sparse files. So all the programs and stuff on one mac are not installed on the second mac.

When plugged in to power source it starts vibrating every 60 seconds and becomes hotter. After 3 hours of being plugged in to charger it turns on but the screen is fully blurred. If I switch it off it's not turning on again.

How to simultaneously debug two schemes of same app on Xcode?

I have a test application which has two schemes A and B, client and server. I would like to debug both schemes at the same time, stepping each other while jumping between the two instances of Xcode.

Each time i am trying to launch the second scheme, Xcode proposes to stop the current other scheme running, which is obviously not what i am looking for.

Any ideas?

What causes the pop-up "To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment"

On OSX Yosemite an annoying pop-up comes up quite often saying:

To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment

I know the solution is to install java; however I'm wondering what's the cause for that.

A quick ps -axww tells me:

13218 ?? S 0:00.29 /System/Library/Java/Support/CoreDeploy.bundle/Contents/Download Java http://ift.tt/1BkbWyZ Java Components

I dug around and I found that there is a LaunchDaemon that references this in /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.java.InstallOnDemand.plist:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://ift.tt/vvUEPL">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.apple.java.InstallOnDemandAgent</string>
<key>MachServices</key>
<dict>
<key>com.apple.java.installondemand</key>
<true/>
</dict>
<key>Program</key>
<string>/System/Library/Java/Support/CoreDeploy.bundle/Contents/Download Java http://ift.tt/1BkbWyZ Java Components</string>
<key>RunAtLoad</key>
<false/>
</dict>
</plist>

Does anyone know what is the purpose of all this? The pop-up appears at random times, which makes me think there's a background daemon that demands Java to run but I could not find any source for this behaviour.
