EarPods sound problems

I have a pair of earpods and when I connect them to my MacBook the sounds is more bass-y that it should.. The fun fact is that if I don't plug the mini jack completely into the port the sound is 'as it should be'! But when I put the plug correctly for 1 second the sound is ok an then it turns to very bass-y again... I presume that something is wrong with configuration or something?! When I plug it into my iphone is the same effect.. Anybody knows what's the problem??

iPhone 5s camera takes random size photos

My iPhone 5s camera takes random size photos. Sometimes they are large and at other times they are postage size images. This is very frustrating. Any answers or did I just buy a lousy product?

Stolen iPhone and need to access the cloud?

My husband past away last year and shortly after his iPhone was stolen. It had all of our texts, pics, voicemails etc. on it. I thought okay no big deal I have my phone with the same texts it'll be okay. Well my phone was stolen too. Well now I have no trace of and communication he and I had over the last few years and I'm dying to know how I can recover any of it. I do have the new iPhone 6 but every time I try to get to the cloud it wants to pair devices to pull info from. I just want to know if I can access the old info from those two phones?!

I know for sure my husbands phone was backed up. He was an IT guy and was ocd about backing everything up. Can someone tell me if this is possible?

Time Machine skipping automated hourly backups

My Time Machine is always skipping the automated hourly backups since some days ago. I can force a manual backup and it will complete correctly, but hourly backups are skipped and scheduled for the next hour just to be skipped again. It was previously working correctly.

I did try to troubleshoot:

• Wiped the Time Machine hard disk and started again


• Local backups are disabled


• Nothing interesting on syslog


• Removed /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and reconfigured Time Machine

None of this seems to help. The problem started when I pushed the date of my MacBook to the future, two backups were done "in the future" and then I did go back to NTP.

My last resort would be to add tmutil startbackup -a to my crontab, but it has to be a better way out of this.

iPhone 5s not playing through Stereos '

I work in different Gyms and normally play My IPhone 5s Music through The Stereos. Up to a few Weeks ago everything was Working. It now works on Speaker but not when i put Headphones in or connect with a Stereo Cord. Please Help?

Why do emails that I read on my phone, no longer appear on my Mac mail client?

I don't read email on my phone all that often but when I do, I often notice that those emails will not appear in Mail on my iMac. They are obviously on the IMAP server as the phone can still see them, but it's as if they are gone as far as the mac is concerned.

This seems to only be an issue if the mac is asleep or otherwise not on the internet, when the messages come in. If the mac is able to receive the message the first time, then both machines will have a copy of it. But if the mac is asleep and I check mail and read a message on my phone, that message will never be able to be seen on the mac.

Anyone know why this is, and more importantly how to get around it? It's very annoying when I need to reply to the email on the mac. Currently I have to manually forward it from my phone to myself so I can retrieve it on the mac.

Help with changing user home folder file name

My computer was restored from my ex-wife's laptop 3 years ago. Her maiden name pops up as the user-folder name on all my files, and it's been wearing on me for a long time.

I used this Q&A to try to change it, but when i get to tubedogg's 5th step, I can't figure out a way to change the folder name, even after double-clicking/going to the file on the root-user account.

Apple's support site provides steps to change the "account name" (that is, the name of the home folder for a particular user).

1-    Enable the root user (using these steps).
2-     Log in as root.
3-    Navigate to the /Users folder.
4-    Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
    Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
    Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
    Choose Log Out from the Apple menu. Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
    After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user (using these steps)."

iPhone and Macbook Pro with a single wireless headset

Is it possible to have a single wireless headset that works simultaneously with both an iPhone and a Macbook Pro?

Imagine this scenario: I am watching video on my screen, listening via my wireless headset. My phone rings. To answer it now, I have to remove my headset and put on the second headset paired with my phone.

In scenario two I am having a Skype call on my computer when my phone rings.

In the first scenario I need only need to receive at my headset from one device and send and receive from the second. In the second scenario I need to send and receive with both devices.

Is this possible with a single headset?

iCloud with Multi-Boot Drive, 10.8/10.9/10.10

I want to set up a multi-boot drive allowing the options of starting up in Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite. However, given the changes that have taken place in Yosemite with regards to the way iCloud functions & stores files as well as syncing changes that have been forced upon many 3rd party apps, I'm concerned about rendering either the 10.8/.9 drives or the 10.10 drive as being only semi-functional. What are my options, if any, for retaining as much full functionality & cross-device/platform synchronicity while having active drives running 10.8-10.10? Thank you.

Is this launchd plist broken or is it just me?

I was reading a post about using Bittorrent Sync on OS X that includes a launchd plist that's supposed to keep the app running in the event that it crashes. It doesn't seem to work, though, since I've had the app crash and not relaunch. I'm looking for help fixing the plist.

The "clever" bit is using /usr/bin/open to launch the app, with -W to make sure that open waits for the app to exit. But I think that's also why it doesn't actually work. If I'm reading this right, the app will only relaunch if /usr/bin/open crashes, not if Bittorrent Sync crashes. For the above approach to work, open would need to return error status if the app it opened had crashed (and this does not happen).

I know I could fix this by dropping open and instead hard coding the path to the executable as /Applications/BitTorrent http://ift.tt/1BCl19t Sync. But is there an alternative that doesn't require hard-coding the full path? Using open would be elegant, if it worked.

Problems with game center account in clash of clans

A long time ago, I made a game center account to which I attached my village. This account hasn't been used anymore, and I has significantly progressed with his game of Clash of Clans since then. I want to transfer that game to my new phone, but it won't let me. I made a new game center account and even a new icloud account so I could use the "link to another device" functionality in the game. When I try that, it says this village is attached to another game center account and that I have to login to that one to get the transfer code. I don't have a clue what the login/pw for that account was. How can I solve this?

How can I list the IP addresses of all the AirPrint printers on a network?

I am trying to make a list of all AirPrint printers on the network at a school. We have many of them because of all the classroom and office printers, but they have not been set up with meaningful names. I tried reading the DHCP allocation table in the router, but many of the printers do not report a host name. I can't check printers in-person because of the disruption to classes from going in to every room and playing with the 1-3 printers there. The dns-sd command as in How to find IP address of my other Mac? gives a column called Instance Name, rather than the host name. Using the dns-sd -G option on the instance names gave no such record. dns-sd -Z is closer, since it gives host names to look up with the G option, but it doesn't give a complete list. There are many more printers in the add printer dialog on a Mac than there are in the output of dns-sd -Z. Does anyone have some code or script to just find all the IP addresses of things advertising by Bonjour?

Is there better third-party scanner software for OS X than Preview?

I'm not overly happy with the UI for interfacing with the scanner on my Epson WF-3250 series scanner that's provided by the latest Preview that comes with OS X 10.10. It's clunky and awkward, crashes often. You have to reselect your options every time you use.

It's just, honestly, not very Apple-like.

Is there reliable third party scanning software that I could use in place of Preview for obtaining PDF scans of multi-page documents on the Epson's auto-feeder?

Edit: With OS X 10.9, Epson stopped shipping its own scanner utility. The ship a driver and instructions to use Preview for acquiring images on OS X.

Reinstall OS X (Yosemite) without Internet Connection

I have got very slow internet connection. Last time, it took me 8 hours to download the Yosemite installation files. Is there anyway to clone a clean copy of OS X to another drive?

When a game crashes, I get a grey screen with just a mouse

I get occasional crashes with the game Guild Wars 2 because it can't render an in-game web browser. Sometimes when it crashes, the screen goes completely grey with just the (movable) mouse showing. After a while, it just returns to the login screen and everything acts like I restarted the computer. As a note, my uptime (found by running uptime in Terminal) is still 7 days, so it didn't actually fully restart.

I figure this is my graphics card restarting, but I was wondering if anyone else can shed some light on it. Thanks!

Extension to hide Safari toolbar

I used to have an extension that hided the toolbar completely (which I installed from a website, outside the extensions market) giving a minimalist look, but it suddenly got removed from my Safari for some reason, and I can't find it back in Google.

Stop sign at boot - new SSD

I've got a mid 2012 MBP 13" in which I inserted a brand new MX100 in the place of the old HDD. I've put the old HDD in a case in the superdrive place and tried to install 10.10 but the install failed.

I then tried with th SSD in an USB case, managed to install & boot 10.10. Then I put the SSD back in the Mac and got the stop sign at boot.

At first I thought it was the Firevault on the HDD which was causing the issue but even after turning it off, the mac didn't want to boot...

Which brings me 2 questions:

• Why does it boot when plugged in an USB case and not from inside?


• How can I fix this thing?

Can I make a bootable drive for mid 2010 MBP with a Windows computer?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Yosemite that I foolishly did a reset on while it was connected to an external monitor that was designated as default in settings And connected to a USB keyboard and mouse. Now I have the white screen of death on startup.

I have tried all keyboard combos to try to boot into safe mode, single user, reset PRAM, etc and none work. Yes, I know, I mucked up.

My question is; I have a working windows based desktop and is there any way for me to create a bootable image on an external drive (either USB or an external HD) so that I can at least get into some type of diagnostic on the MBP?

Can iTunes be made to play Apple ProRes files?

My videos encoded as Apple ProRes are playable in Quicktime but not in iTunes. Is there anything I can do to make iTunes play them?

Apple's support page suggests to me that iTunes can play any .MOV file:

QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.

but this does not seem to be the case in my testing.

Sharing AFP links on a shared network?

We all work off the same server which seems to be mounted via AFP. Is there anyway we can pass a link via Bonjour/Messages that will open the directory in a new finder window? When passing an AFP link the prompt posted below presents itself and just hangs there. Any hel would be greatly appreciated.

Why do I sometimes have to tap three times to click?

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. I have enabled tap to click on the trackpad.

Sometimes I have to lightly tap three times for it to register a click, it can happen in any app (Firefox even the system preferences dialog).

What could cause it to not react on the first tap ?

Merge PowerPoint presentations with Javascript Automation

The goal is to do a 3-way merge with git using PowerPoint's mergeWithBaseline method. I can load and access a presentation with the following:

PPT = Application("Microsoft PowerPoint")
original = Path(pathToMainFile)
PPT.open(original)
PPT.activate()
PPT.activeWindow.presentation.mergePresentation({withRevisionPath: pathToRevisedFile})

However, that last line using mergePresentation doesn't appear to do anything. If I do it manually in PowerPoint (Review->Compare), then PPT.activeWindow.presentation.inMergeMode() returns true.

Hopefully someone with experience in Automator can explain why that merge operation is working?

Suddenly some folders are unreachable from my external hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro and I partitioned the internal SSD into two parts (150GB and 50GB). One of them (the 50 GB part) contains a bootcamp with Windows 8.1. I also have an external hard drive, which is 1 TB with both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connections. I partitioned this into to two parts also (500GB and 500GB). One of them is formated for Windows and the other is for Mac.

Since I don't have too much space on the bootcamp internal hard drive (50 GB) I installed MSVC2013 on the external hard drive's Windows part. After the installation I learned that I didn't save too much space, but it worked and I had no problems with it. Since I didn't need it anymore I uninstalled it, but then for some reason I had to install it again. For some reason when MSVC2013 was uninstalled I changed the external hard drives Windows partitioned part's driver letter to a different one. When I tried to install MSVC2013 again it didn't let me, since it wanted to install it to the same place where it was before and I couldn't change the installation path, because it was grayed out. I read it in some forums that this is a "normal" behavior from MSVC2013 and to change the installation path you need to format the whole OS. Formating at that time was not an option for me, so I thought I create a small partition from the external hard drives Windows partition with the driver letter what MSVC2013 wants. I created the partition with Disk Managment in Windows and the installation was able to finish. MSVC2013 worked again.

After all this I went back to the Mac part of my internal hard drive and I realized that now on the Mac side it doesn't recognize the Mac part of my external hard drive. In the Mac's Disk Utility it shows the part, but it is grayed out. So I went back to Windows to see if the Mac part of my external hard drive is recognized there and I learned that it is. So I thought I make a fast copy of all my data of the Mac part of the external hard drive and then the strange thing happened.

Some of my files were able to be copied and some were not. The folders which were not copied were unreachable. This is the error message what I get when I try to access them.

Anybody has any suggestion how could I reach these folders? All help would be much appreciated!

Add ~/Downloads to Dock through Profile Manager

I am trying to create a minimal dock through Profile Manager (OS X 10.10.2/Server 4.0.3) but I need to include the users' Download directory. Profile Manager has an option to add the Documents folder but not Downloads. I figured I'd add it in the Dock Items, but so far it isn't working.

In Dock Items, I've tried:

~/Downloads
Downloads
/Network/Servers/<fully qualified servername>/Users/%short_name%/Downloads

The last configuration shows a proper folder on the client dock but it has a permission denied icon present and it clearly is not pointing to the right place.

I'm considering another approach which would involve allowing the dock items of the user to merge with those provided by Profile Manager as this keeps the Downloads on the dock. This approach would require me to create a dock template that is used when I create the users' accounts. This approach may be okay but I also may have to limit modifications to the dock, and so I'd like to get the first approach to work.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Does the DNS service need to be on in order for the caching service to work on OS X Server?

I didn't think that caching needed the DNS service to be running in order for it to work. Is this true/false? I've been reading a lot of forums where it says you should get the server DNS right in order to make sure all the other services work but I just wanted to make sure.

How to list Network Interface UUIDS?

I'm trying really hard to find a simple way to fetch all network UUIDS on my Mac to be able to do some plist magic.

Is there a command to do such a thing?

This is my first Mac and I'll be replacing an i7 quad core Thinkpad. I currently use it for java web programming. I want to be able to debug in tomcat via IntelliJ Idea with postgres running and spotify working like a charm.

My fear with the 13inch is that it comes with a dual core and I think ti will overheat with my workflow.

I love the App tabs in Firefox because they allow me to easily keep a few key tabs (webmails, calendar, todo list) open without them taking up too much space. But I love Safari because it syncs with all my other devices.

How to use Numbers to generate pdf on a web server and then email it out?

I have an issue.

My client loved the report I generated using Numbers on Mavericks OS X.

The bad news is that the data is being processed on a ubuntu machine running python and django.

I want to automate this report generation which involves exporting to pdf and then sending it out via email.

I have no problems with the web programming, the email automation using Python and Django.

The bad news is I cannot seem to replicate the beautiful layout in Numbers.

I may have to resort to AppleScript.

How do I go about solving this issue assuming I really have to use Numbers?

If I need to get a Apple Server, which version of OS should I get so I can use the Numbers?

And what kind of AppleScript should I write? I am a total newbie to AppleScript.

I am also okay with a solution where my web server stays as it is and handles the emailing, but is able to send a web service call to a Apple machine that will generate the pdf using Numbers.

My friend installed Bittorrent and got viruses on her mac

So my friend wanted to watch "50 shades of grey" (I know) and so I showed her how to install Bittorrent and download a torrent file. 2 days later (today) she messaged me saying that her browser settings have changed, the mackeeper icon is in her dock and that she couldn't even open google drive. I am mostly concerned about the mackeeper icon since I have heard very bad things about it. What is going on?? This didn't happen to me (also on a mac). How do I fix this without any kind of damage?

Lots of Finder windows opening all at once

Last Sunday I was looking through Finder on my mid-2011 MBA. (I was clearing out my 'cache' and 'preferences' folders.) I must have either clicked something (I use an external mouse) or pressed something on my keyboard because suddenly all the folders started opening in separate Finder windows! There were lots of them and they completely covered the screen! But then I closed all the folders (when they'd finished opening...) and my screen looked normal again. Is there a menu option for 'opening finder folders in individual windows' or something?? Or a key combination that I was unaware of? Grateful for any help - intrigued!

Trouble accessing ntfs drives in mac os x

I installed tuxera-ntfs in mac os x and am able to mount my external disks and use them without any issues.

I can delete files, copy files to my external disk and from my disk

But I am not able to cut the files(use the cmd+X) . Any files that I copied from my external disk to my mac, I face the same issue.

Also I am not able to change user permission by using chmod for any of the files.

I have two disks and the behaviour is the same in both of them

I want to know if this is a default behavior of using ntfs drives in mac or I am missing something.

Ejecting SD card takes a long time and CPU usage goes up

I'm on Mavericks and after I eject most SD cards, it takes a minute or two and process UASysAgent is taking 80% of the CPU... quite annoying, does anyone else experience this? Something that can be done about it?

Power Mac G5 doesn't boot/black screen

I have a Power Mac G5 (Model No: A1047 EMC 1969C). My problem is that it doesn't properly boot anymore when powered up. When I'll press the power button, the white LED next to the button will illuminate briefly and the fans come on for very shortly and slow down again. The screen stays dark. Then the fans very slowly increase their speed until they seem to reach full speed. This takes probably around 5 minutes and the fans stay on unless I force my Mac to power off with the power button. The screen stays black the whole time. The white LED next to the power button doesn't blink. Any idea how to trouble shoot this?

Friend Dropped iPhone. Is it okay?

Okay, so I have a speck candy shell grip on my phone, I have never dropped my phone before but yesterday I let my friend do something on it in the YMCA and he dropped it. It was only from no more than about two feet and it fell on the spongy-soft floor. I'm really paranoid something may have happened but there is no damage and it functions no differently. 100% perfect. Any way anyone can put my mind at ease?

Changing volume at command line using script/function

I found this nifty command which sets volume to 50% (or any level desired):

osascript -e 'set volume output volume 50'

I'd love to have a script or function that lets me type v 50 or v 30, etc. to easily change the volume levels.

I tried making this bash function:

v() {
# adjust volume function
osascript -e 'set volume output volume $1'
}

However this gives:

25:26: syntax error: Expected expression but found unknown token. (-2741)

How can I make this work?

Can't a Macbook Pro work properly on integrated GPU only?

For a couple of weeks, I've been having kernel panics in my MacBook Pro (Early 2011, Yosemite), mostly doing zoom operations using QuickView and Preview.

A couple of times, it had problems rebooting, until finally it only rebooted to a grey screen.

I installed gfxCardStatus to prevent it to switching to the discrete GPU at any time, and things seemed to go smoothly for a couple of days. But one day it had a kernel panic when waking up from sleep.

Booting in verbose mode showed no indications of what the problem could be, but I suspected it was a video card issue. I've known that this model of MBP had problems with defective AMD Radeon discrete GPUs. I know Apples is repairing eligible machines, but I live in a country where perhaps that wouldn't be possible.

I decided to prevent the laptop from using the AMD GPU and use the integrated intel chip instead, I moved this drivers out of the /System/Library/Extensions/folder:

After that it did boot up, but the screen shows thin horizontal blue stripes all over as well as some other glitches and overall sluggishness.

I just want my Mac to use the integrated Intel GPU and forget the discrete ADM Radeon card altogether. Other machines, including Apple machines, don't have a discrete GPU, just an integrated one, and they work fine for day-to-day, non-graphic-intensive tasks

My question:

• Is possible for this machine to work normally using only the integrated Intel GPU?


• If so, how?


• Are both my discrete GPU and my integrated GPU damaged?**

Facebook page layout changed

The configuration of my Facebook page on iPad has suddenly changed...seemingly for no reason. Now, the buttons for newsfeed, messenger, notifications and friend requests are at the bottom of the page in a white border, instead of being on the top in the Facebook page blue border. Did I do something? Did Facebook change its layout? Can I get it back? Thanks.

Error when trying to launch newly installed Eclipse

I get the following error when trying to launch Eclipse, which I recently tried to install.

"Version 1.6.0_65 of the JVM is not suitable for this product. Version 1.7 or greater is required."

I have the most recent 1.8 installed from Oracle, and I'm running Mountain Lion.
