iTerm2, on startup, opens as many tabs as were opened in my previous session. How can I disable this behaviour? I don't need those empty tabs.

What would happen if I forced a Linux driver into OSX?
So, recently I got a Mac system and I was planning to put in an Intel WiFi card (as an upgrade for its current card). Now, as we know, Apple and Intel do not get along WiFi-wise.
However, this same card works in Linux.
What would happen if I were to force the Intel drivers for the Linux kernel into OSX? Would it work? Would there be severe instability or data loss? Is it even possible?
Compose an email with an inline image
Some time ago I managed to force Mail to always put attachments at the end of the email. Now I would like to revert this setting.
As I don't find anything in the GUI (preferences) I suppose that I changed some preferences with the terminal.
I see that I have AttachAtEnd=1 in my preferences

But it seems that I am not able to change it

How to turn off iTunes Store localisation?
The iTunes Store has an annoying habit of localising song metadata based on the system language: for instance, if I have my system language set to English but buy from the Japanese iTunes store, the song name "以心伝心" will instead appear as "Ishindenshin" in the store and metadata of the downloaded file.
Logging out of the store, changing the system language to Japanese, and then logging back in corrects the issue, at least until the system language is changed back.
I tried setting iTunes to always open in Japanese as follows:
defaults write -app iTunes AppleLanguages -array ja
but while the rest of the app obeys this nicely, the store doesn't, and insists on continuing to localise content.
Anyone know if a similar setting exists to set the store language/localisation without changing the entire system language?
DriveDx shutdown count is very high
DriveDx claims that there have been 2051 power cycles on my Fusion SSD in 17 months.
For the Fusion Hard drive part it claims 6402 power cycles count.
SSD power on time has been 12250 hours and the hard drive 13343 hours?
This seems a lot as I keep my Mac on all the time and do force reboot very rarely only if nothing else helps = rarely.
Why would these numbers be like that. For the hard drive it would be 13 times a day and SSD 4 times a day. Energy saving is for hard drives is off?
This is Yosemite on iMac.
For the SSD it claims wear levelling count 35%.
Hard drive seems to be failing but the SSD looks low too.
Change Apache root directory
I am having problems changing the Permissions on the "username.conf" file in the /etc/apache2/users/ folder. It needs to have the permission of-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 298 Jun 28 16:47 username.conf
but I am not able to achieve this.
I have tried changing the permissions with the commandsudo chmod 644 username.conf;
and it didn't change.

Youtube not working on macbook pro
Canot open any video on Youtube with safari or google chrome or firefox may be after updating to Yosemite. Do not know.
Is there any good alternative to winrar archiving utility for mac with ability to browse files before extracting them?
I have so far tried Keka and Unarchiver, but they both don't allow browsing the archive content. They simply extract everything contained in the archive which is not a desirable behaviour.
Is there any free (or cheap) alternative to winrar for osx?
How to read ePubs on a first generation iPad
My father has a 1st generation iPad. I can't seem to find a single eBook reader that is compatible. iBooks should have a compatible version, but it won't install it.
I have read about using iTunes to sync older versions, but his Mac mini is so old it won't even 'see' the iPad on iTunes.
Any ideas?

Occasionally my ex and i will have texting conversations. I would like to be able to save these digitally for my records. Is there a way to save these conversations as a text file? Right now I only know how to send myself an email with a singular text. Not useful for a 50 text back and forth conversation about our kids. I have an iphone 6
Flashing folder at start up, all recommended troubleshooting has failed
I really hope someone might be able to help with this cause I am getting frustrated beyond belief.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mavericks OS X 10.9. About a week ago it crashed while I was printing, first my desktop went gray while still displaying my desktop folders and froze. I manually shut it off and upon restart I got the flashing folder with a question mark.
so far my steps have been:
Holding shift at start up - the screen stays grey and freezes (doesn't even get as far as the flashing folder)
⌘ + R - continues into internet recovery mode
disk utility - Disk0 and mac OS X base system are available
under base system / first aid / verify disk - I get an all green and no repairs are needed
under erase and restore - all options are grayed out
when closing out of the OS X Utilities window and going into start up disk - no disk is available
Reinstall OS X - I am able to get though licensing agreement and then it stops on selecting the disk to install on because no disk options show up and there is no searching indicator or failed message.
I have taken my hard drive out and placed it in an enclosure where I was able to access and copy the files through the USB on an older laptop that is running Snow Leopard.
As far as I can tell, my hard drive is fine, all the files were available, there are no strange sounds while it is spinning and I am completely at a loss. Please help.
*** EDIT: troubleshooting also includes:
holding D during start up and running the extensive hardware test. No problems were detected.
holding command + option + P + R during start up until the starting sound plays twice to reset NVRAM. It went right back to the flashing folder
holding command + S at start up for single-user mode and my laptop doesn't register, it goes straight back to the flashing folder (same with just holding S, though when I looked it up, everywhere else advised command + S).
Since I am unable to do anything productive in disk utility, is there anything else that anyone thinks might work?
File contents remains in terminal after exiting Vim?
I'm using the stock terminal with zsh and vim. After I exit vim, the file contents remains in the terminal. Ideally, only the previous history would be in the terminal when I exit vim (such as the behavior I've seen with linux/bash).
How can I accomplish that?

2013 iMac + Bootcamp + Windows 8.1 = BSOD
I have a 2013 model iMac at work with Core i5 processor (the first generation with the thin edges). It is running OS X Mavericks - the IT department here at work states that I can't upgrade the system to Yosemite due to some "open directory related integration issues." But I was given the green light to install Windows 8.1 in Boot Camp.
I performed the installation as normal. Boot Camp prepared my USB drive from our company provisioned ISO image, installed Windows to the partition, and the Windows OOBE ran. Immediately after, the Apple Boot Camp installer appeared so I allowed it to complete. Upon rebooting after installing Boot Camp, the system can no longer load Windows. A blue screen with the ":(" symbol appears every time.
It flashes by fast enough that I can't recover any information from it. I have found extremely limited information about this, but one post suggests that it is a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK exception - sounds like an unsigned driver was installed (?)
Is there something I am missing? This seems very un-Apple. Windows 8.1 has been out for long enough that it should be pretty well supported by now, or at least I'd think. The machine is new enough, and even though the Mac OS side is a bit old, the Windows partition shouldn't be affected by this.
Anyone have any advice?

Suddenly, My MBP sound isn't working. I have tried couple of way to resolve the problem but nothing is working. Here is some of the screenshot:

As suggested to Resetting the PRAM didn't worked. I was able to update SMC and not EFI Firmware. It's showing an error:Software is not supported on my system.

iPod Touch 5th gen won't play a certain podcast
For whatever reason, I can't get a certain episode of a podcast to play on my iPod touch. I know they both work, as I can play it fine in iTunes. But when I transfer it to my iPod, it won't play, even through iTunes. The thing is, it's only episode that won't play. The podcast has 3 episodes so far, and the first and third both play fine on my iPod. But it won't play the second one. It has the little paper symbol with the crease on the top left corner, even though I'm sure everything synced correctly
Mac to Mac Remote Desktop - Full Screen Option?
I recently got a MacBook Air for work and when working from home I'd like to connect to it from my 27" iMac so I can leverage the larger screen for additional working space.
I used to do this with my work PC and it worked really well, but the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client allows for a full screen function that expands the desktop so I can leverage the full 27".
I have Screen Sharing enabled on the Mac and it does work, but when choosing "Full Screen" it does not make the screen any larger than the 13" or so...
I'm okay to look at purchasing an alternative, but so far have not found one that works.

Why does Cmd-I in Preview do something other than advertised?
Somewhere after Lion (from which I upgraded to 10.10), Apple has changed the shortcut to show/hide the toolbar in Preview from ⌘-B to ⌘-I, at least it says so in the menu entries. 
Can someone explain why they would change it (probably not a constructive question), or whether this is a bug and how to rectify this and get the old behaviour back? Can this be done with assigning custom keyboard shortcuts?
iPod 4G and ios7 [duplicate]
This question already has an answer here:
I really was looking forward to updating to ios7 on my device that I had just bought. But then I found oh that it isn't compatible with the iPod4G I paid $200 to find out that I couldn't even download the apps that I really need because they're only compatible with seven and up. Is there a jailbreak? Apple needs to fix this as soon as possible because I didn't spend all this money to be screwed over by apple again.
Can not delete Free Space on iMac 5K: Partition doesn't appear in CS list
I recently tried to install a bootcamp instance of Win 8.1. The install failed for some reason (wasn't clear from the error message). This left me with an unaddressable partition. I erased that partition in Disk Utility but now I am left with a hunk of Free Space that refuses to be deleted or merged with my Macintosh HD partition.
When I try to delete it from the UI nothing happens -- no error nothing. It just sits there. When I do it from the command prompt I get an error saying that operation isn't available.
PLEASE HELP!

Finder window within programs will not display "date modified"
When attempting to open files from within Office 2011 or Adobe or any other program, the finder window displays "Date Added" instead of "Date Modified". These columns are unchangeable. How can I set it to display "Date Modified"?
How can I find all *old* Keynote presentations on my computer?
I have some old Keynote presentations. When I try to open them with the latest Keynote (6.5.2 (2119)), I get the following warning:
This presentation can’t be opened because it’s too old.
To open it, save it with Keynote ’09 first.
I've managed to get Keynote '09 installed, and I can open with that, save, open with the current version, and save again.
It will be a pain to do this with all of my Keynote presentations, but it seems it has to be done if I want to be able to access them in the future. Or I should convert them to PDF so they are in a format with more long-term access options.
How do I find all of the Keynote presentations on my computer that are outdated? Is there an mdfind option that will allow me to find just the old versions?
Downloading songs from external hard dirve
I'm using an external hard drive to download songs to itunes. When I'm done syncing, I get a message saying my ipod cannot be ejected because some of the files are being used by another source. Somehow I think some of the files from the external hard drive got downloaded onto the internal hard drive. I'm not super computer literate but I really don't remember doing anything other than moving the file from the external hard drive to iTunes. Why is this happening and what do I do to fix it?
Is it possible to include a shared calender from Exchange in the calendar app on Mac OS X?
I've Mac OS X 10.9.5 installed. On this machine you can find the calendar app. In Outlook it is possible to add a shared calendar from exchange. Here I don't need a username/password. I can easily add this calendar.
Can I add such a shared exchange calendar to the calendar app?
Unable to Install apps onto my iPad (Stuck on "waiting...")
For the past several days, I have been unable to install ANY apps onto my iPad. When I click "GET" and then "INSTALL", it just says "Waiting..." below the app icon.
This is what it looks like (not from my iPad, from Google):
I've tried the following to attempt to resolve the issue:
(I had no other apps updating/installing)
- Restarted the device
- Turned on and off the device
- Updated the iOS 8 software to latest version
- Went to Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
- Restarted AppStore
- Synced my device with iTunes
- Deleted app and tried to reinstall
- Logged out of Appstore
- Logged back in to Appstore
- Turned off/on wifi
In addition to not being able to download apps, I can't download books from iBooks either. I don't know if this is a software issue, or if it's a network issue.
Can't Clear "Form and Search History" in Firefox

My game "Clash" is on a phone I transfered on a tablet .I was not satisfied with this tablet, I traded against another.Une Once back home to retransfer the game again, not !! Mention: "The village has already been associated .L'association can only be done once" The store has assured me that the old tablet had been reset and the game no longer existed. Prior to OS X Yosemite, the "Checked" property in the Calendar app Info.plist file reflected the UI status. In Yosemite it does not update when you check or uncheck the calendar in the Calendar.app sidebar

Can I use Linux in a 2011 Macbook Pro with a defective discrete GPU?
I have an early 15" 2011 Macbook Pro that is affected by the defective discrete GPU.
I know there are workarounds in OSX to force the use of the integrated Intel GPU, or disable the drivers for the discrete GPU. However these workarounds either make the computer too slow to use or are not reliable: although initially disabled discrete GPU may be activated when using some software and then the computer would stop working.
I have found these instructions for Arch Linux that look promising, because they mention a way to enable only the Intel GPU:

Use only SMTP server without a mailbox
In Mail.app I have several mail addresses and incoming mail to some addresses is already being forwarded to my primary mail address. I don't want to have an inbox for these secondary emails (I've got them on my primary anyway) but I want to be able to send from those addresses. I've tried adding my secondary account as usual, and then disabling it. But then I can't see that address' SMTP server to send from when sending. If I enable it, I can see it, but its mailbox automatically comes back. How can I have no mailbox for a mail account, but still be able to select its SMTP server to send mail from that address?
Time machine missing backups?
Yes, time machine missing backup folders/files has been asked before and gone unaswered. I can't touch those threads as a new, reputationless member. It's very dissapointing to discover missing folders and files from full time machine backups.
I look forward to answers on this. This is by far one of the most disappointing feeling about Apple and a well recommended way of backing up.

One of my clients is a music composer and has to create the score of two different movies.
The situation:
- 2 almost identical Macs regarding software configuration (Mac OS X 10.8/10.9, Logic Audio, Komplete 10 and some other plug-ins and sound libraries) and power
- 2 different sites (one at home, one in a studio)
- decent network link on both sites (~50 MB/s down, ~10 MB/s up, at least one non-fixed ip)
The requirements:
- ease of use (the composer is not very tech savvy)
- secure/confidential (the files (audio & video) are subject of non-disclosure agreements)
- flexible (the different raw cuts of the movies (or scenes) may change rapidly and the score has to be adapted easily)
- versioning (easily revert to a previous version)
- easy to backup
Does anyone know of a collaboration software, a web service or a special workflow achieving all these goals?
Do you know any situation where iPhone might misinterpret a national phone number as an international one?
We have a business phone supplier who provide our office numbers.
Sometimes, when making an outbound call from an 0330 number (UK number) provided by this company (e.g. 0330 XXX XXXX) it shows up on iPhone as: +33 (0) 088XXX - with the last four characters truncated, and formatted as if it were a French number.
This is a bit hit and miss and doesn't seem to happen every time.
I wanted to validate that the supplier's explanation is correct:
In regards to the incorrect CLI presentation on iPhones, I believe that this is an Apple issue as I have seen several threads about the same thing on the iOS developer forums. It looks like Apple made changes to the error handling between their cell transmitter/receiver unit and iOS which, in certain circumstances (mainly errors within the iPhone software although bad information from the cell provider can also be to blame), misinterprets some numbers as international numbers. In the case of the 033~ numbers it thinks they are French and will display the number in what it thinks is the correct manner. By the looks of things, this is the second time Apple have managed to do this so I'm expecting that they will have it fixed for the next iOS release (8.1.3 if I remember correctly).
I've done some pretty extensive searching of bug reports and developer forums and can't find anything mentioned about this issue having happened in the past, nor being due to be fixed. Has anyone else heard of this happening or know where I might find out more about the issue?
I think I messed up the Fusion Drive on my 1TB iMac (with BootCamp)
this is a somewhat similar post to this one (Can't create partition on free space with Disk Utility) but not quite...
It started with me creating a BootCamp partition (around 145 GB) for Windows 8 quite some time ago.
Everything was working fine until I decided to upgrade to 8.1 from the Windows store - the installation went fine but Windows never managed to boot again. I managed to fix the iMac into booting OSX and forgot about it until today (oh why?!)
I decided I will give 8.1 another go - as the partition was there and so I wanted to use it by trying to install over it again. I chose the EFI install and went for it, but the installer informed me that it will not install, because the partition has MBR instead of GPT.
So instead of running the installer again in normal mode - I logged back into OSX deleted the BOOTCAMP partition (or so I then thought), ran the installer again in EFI and told it to create a partition for itself in the free space and install Windows.
The installer created 3 partition - 1 large one and 2 small ones. I didn't like that so went back to OS X tried to delete those partitions, but that of course didn't work and my drive became messier and messier. By that time I knew I was not very smart about it and tried to delete all the partitions I thought I didn't need from the Windows Installer.
I messed up even more... OSX stopped booting. I then read and performed steps from the above mentioned thread. But all along my diskutil list showed 2 physical volumes instead of 1.
So I followed all the steps from the above thread and this is the effect at the moment:

How to disable unread counter/badge on Dock app icon
How can I disable the unread badge and jumping for attention on an app icon in my Dock? It is an app (Line chat) which isn't in System Preferences > Notifications, so can't disable it from there.
Would like to disable the badge as well as the jumping for attention, as both are quite distracting. Hope anyone can help, thanks in advance!

My built-in keyboard suddenly does not work anymore. Even when I did not turn on caps lock it stills capitalize all letters for me. I relogged but does not work. After testing I found out that the Right Shift is glitched. This makes me unable to enter the password of my Mac correctly and leads to the second problem. I don't know if it's because the keys are malfunctioning or I get infected by a virus.
As I cannot log in into my Mac, I have to log in using the Guest User account. But this happens:

Not possible to create a sparsebundle image on a SMB mounted Volume
I'm trying to create a sparse bundle image from Disk Utility directly on my NAS (through a mounted smb volume):
I then get the following error after a few seconds:
Creating a sparseimage the same way works perfectly. I however wanted to go to a sparse bundle as the file is afterwards synchronized with Google Drive and sparsebundle are seen as folders and are then more sync-friendly.
I'm on 10.10.1.

I love seamlessly scrolling from page to page in my reading list, but I often add chronological pages (sequential blog posts, for example) and the current set up then forces me to read them backwards. Is there a way to reverse this?
