Use keyboard for accessing Emacs Menu

I am using the

brew install emacs

version of gui-based emacs. After using the mac shortcut to access the Menu bar, I am able to use the mnemonic to access the individual top level menu items: e.g.

  ALT-F  for file

The problem is that then hitting down arrow key or return does not dropdown the menu items. Well .. with two exceptions: the

Alt-E (Emacs) and 
Alt-H (Help)

dropdowns actually work. The others? Nothing happens. Only by using the Mouse (which is unacceptable to me for common commands in an editor).

Any hints/ideas on this?

iTunes device contents list - many duplicate podcast lines

In the "On My Device" section iTunes shows many, many duplicate lines for podcasts which exist on the device as single instances only. The number of lines seems to increase by one every time the device is synced to the iTunes library. Here's a sample:

All of the "House on Loon Lake" lines are duplicates -- there should be only one. The device contains only one copy of the actual podcast, and the library listing has only one line for this episode, it's just the "On My Device" display that is messed up.

Is there a way to find out if this bug has been reported to Apple and if they are planning to fix it?

iPhone 6, 128 GB - Unable to Install Update iOS 8.2

I have an iPhone 6 which is NOT Jail Broken. The current version of iOS on the phone is 8.1.3 and yesterday I wanted to update to iOS 8.2 . The download went through without any problem but while installing, it gave the error - "Unable to Install Update An error occurred installing iOS 8.2". Tried installing after switching Off and ON and also tried Hard Reset (Holding Home button and On/off switch). Same error displays every time. Also the Touch Id has stopped working and I find that the Settings - Touch ID & Passcode - iPhone Unlock is OFF. When I try to switch it ON, the system displays the error " Failed Unable to complete Touch ID setup. Please go back and try again".

Is anyone facing this problem? I live in India.

How to update all the drivers to latest version(bootcamp)

How to can I manually update all the drivers. I see my Nvidia card's support software always says new update available. Is it safe to update drivers from Nvidia site, some other sites(for other drivers) or Apple releases special type of drivers for there hardware and only those will be supported?

Converting from Keynote to Powerpoint without losing audio recording

I know this question as been asked on how to convert a keynote presentation to a powerpoint format presentation, and I can do that with keynote itself, I've also tried the zamar and icloud drive options but they don't work the way I want them to work. I'm recording audio over my keynote presentation and when I convert over to powerpoint it removes the audio recording. The same thing happens with I attempt the icloud option. Can someone tell me how to convert between the two without losing my audio recording.

WhatsApp crashes only when i stop interacting with it

I'm using a Jailbroken iOS 8.1 iPod Touch 5, and i'm using WhatsApp on it via the WhatsPad tweak. The IPA is original from my iTunes Store account

Since some days ago, every time i enter WhatsApp, it crashes just after, but after tons of ''trying to fix/avoid'' the crash i managed to find that:

If i keep scrolling, or texting random stuff, or changing menus, any type of 'interaction' with the app, it doesn't crash, i can use it normally but just after i stop, like 2 seconds after, the app crashes. i didn't installed or modified any tweak, and my WhatsApp is the 2.xxx.16 version

I tried reinstalling the app but it didn't helped, the first or second time i opened the app it was ok but it started to crash again.

As a total novice analysis i can see that the crash seems to have random stuff everytime...

System partially frozen: cannot alt-tab or force-quit, but can login over AFP... how to fix without hard reboot?

So I was using Safari on my Mac Pro and randomly, for the first time ever, the system became unresponsive, except I can still move the mouse cursor (which is stuck as an I-beam), and I can login to the machine over AFP, browse its drives, etc.

I prefer not to hard reboot my computer. But I cannot alt-tab out of Safari, I cannot force-quit Safari, and I cannot click on any menus or use the Dock. Which is odd because I can still move the mouse cursor.

This is a really weird type of freeze I've never seen before. This machine has been working flawlessly for five years.

Since I was able to login over AFP, is there anything that I can do to resolve this without hard-rebooting the Mac Pro?

Note: I unplugged all USB, DVI, and FW devices (except my TimeMachine drive) and plugged them back in, to no avail.

Ipod plays music 10-20 seconds and after stop playing

How do I bypass a found-on-road iPad Air 2 lock screen?

I recently found an iPad Air 2 along the roadside. It's locked and I would like to be able to access it to attempt to contact the original owner. It had just been rebooted without being unlocked, so any camera exploit won't work.

I'm currently using Ubuntu but I do have access to several Windows machines if one is necessary.

I also understand if this is a question that AskDifferent does not allow, but if it isn't, I'd appreciate any help I can get in locating the device's owner.

rMBP different brightness settings on battery and plugged in

Is it somehow possible to manually control the dimming in OS X Yosemite (10.10.2) like Windows 7 power plans? I would like to have one brightness setting, when on battery (30% brightness) and another, when plugged in (100% brightness), without interference from the light sensor.

Forcing application to go to selected window on startup

I run a multi-monitor set-up on a single "Desktop". All of my applications when opened run on the primary monitor, which is the smaller monitor. I would like to have some (e.g. browser, mail client) open on my secondary, with others (e.g. IRC, terminal, etc) on my primary.

I'm unsure if there's a method to do this natively or if this requires coding, however I'm happy with either solution.

Unlock a Virgin Mobile USA iPhone 4s -- worthwhile?

I have an iPhone 4s that works with Virgin Mobile USA. Since carriers must unlock phones now I'm wondering about unlocking this one. But I haven't been able to determine if it would actually be worthwhile. Specifically, whether I'd be able to use the phone with a different carrier.

The phone is an iPhone 4s, marked on the back as an A1387, and identifies itself in settings as an MD236LL/A. This is a CDMA refurb model, obtained from an Apple store after the original phone got dropped in a puddle.

What I'd like to do: (a) use the phone with some other US-based carrier while at home, and (b) when traveling outside the USA, use the phone with a local SIM and GSM network.

I've tried searching for unlocking info but I'm getting conflicting answers about whether either of the above are possible:

  Some sites say that since the 4s is a "world" phone that after unlocking it would work on both domestic (US) GSM networks as well as CDMA networks like Verizon.

  Some sites say that although it's a "world" phone, it's tied to CDMA when in the USA. While traveling it would work with a GSM network using local SIM but in the USA it could not use a GSM network.

Can anyone clear this up? I know I can legally get the phone unlocked, but would doing so get me either of the things mentioned above? Virgin Mobile USA's site isn't helping me. They have a chart listing types of unlocks for different phones, but from past experience with them I pretty much assume they're either lying or just plain wrong about most things.

Preview in Yosemite prints with large margins, unlike previous version

Before Yosemite, Preview could print large scale text with no noticeable margin by simply increasing "Custom Scale". In the Yosemite-Preview, it is no longer possible to do so. I tried adjusting margins to "0" under Paper size/Manage custom sizes, and yet I am still losing approximately 3/4" in margin on the top and bottom. When printing two pages on one, this makes the print just small enough to be difficult to read; When I increase text size enough to make it readable, the page top and bottom are cut off. It's not a printer problem because the old Preview wasn't like this. Would the previous version of Preview work with Yosemite?

How to prevent one app from restoring it's previous state

I want to turn off the restoring of an application window (in my case, iTerm). How to turn it off, but just for this specific application ?

Mail shows 100% usage for Gmail account, doesn't rebuild

For some reason Mail shows me 100% account usage on my Gmail account. I've deleted most mails with attachments, erased deleted items and did a rebuild. However, the account information still shows 100%, I don't get new mail and nothing seems to work. When looking at gmail.com, there's 1% used.

I've already removed the account and added it again, restarted the Mac and now I'm running out of ideas.

Anyone knows a solution?

Ridiculously slow macbook pro

I have a macbook pro (I think mid 2012). About three months ago it started running really slow, so I renstalled the OS with a recovery partition. For a few weeks it ran very well with an overall very seamless experience.

Yet, as of two days ago, suddenly it started running extreemly sow again. When I use vim and save a 200 line text file it takes about a minute average. When I want to click an icon or menu bar, it's not unusual to delay even highlighting the widget for 30 seconds.

I thought it might be the HDD, so today I changed to a brand new SSD. This, however, had no effect.

The computer runs at this VERY slow speed even when system monitor says that there are 1.5 GB RAM left and 97 % idle CPU.

Does anyone know what the issue might be?

(Right now i'm trying to run the recovery partition again, yet even booting from it has already taken me longer than writing this)

Arc Touch Mouse SE won't reconnect on 10.10, mods to blame?

I have an Arc Touch Mouse SE (Bluetooth edition of the Arc Touch Mouse) and though I remember long ago it worked for the most part in 10.9, it doesn't seem to work in 10.10 and I'm trying to determine if it's one of the 'mods' I've installed that are to blame.

Here's how it works right now: I have to delete it from Bluetooth preferences if it exists already, and manually pair the mouse to get it to work. It will work until I turn either it or Bluetooth off, then it'll refuse to connect until I repeat this process.

I've done, for testing, a clean install of 10.10 on an SD card to see if it's something I've installed that interferes with Bluetooth. It seems to work perfectly on this clean install.

Also, and this may be related, the mouse does not show up in USB Overdrive. It's not present on the list, and the settings I had set do not do anything to the mouse's behavior.

I suppose I should start by listing everything that shows up in the bottom pane of System Preferences. I wonder if there's anything else I have that might interfere with Bluetooth that doesn't show up here. Here's the list:

MacBook Pro 2010 all of a sudden slow

So literally out of the blue, my MB Pro is giving me the rainbow for minutes at time for 99% of the things I try to do.

I maxed out the memory to 8GB last year, and that made a huge improvement, but like I said, this afternoon it went from being a really productive machine to acting like a 10-year old computer.

I'm thinking my hard drive is about to die considering I plugged in for a time machine backup and it says 14 hours for a 210GB backup. Is that right?

A solution would be great, but just knowing what could possibly be going on would be a relief as well.

Mac super monitor

I have 2 extra monitors on my macbook pro. they are positioned like this: I would like to use 1 and 2 as a single giga-monitor.

Ideally I would like that VMWare fusion would recognize them both as independent monitors and use only them, leaving the mbp retina display clear for other uses...

Encrypted Users Directory

This is the scenario:

I have some macbooks bound to Active Directory, so that any AD user can log in.

Is there a away to put the entire /Users directory on an encrypted partition so that a user can log in and then decrypt the Users partition?

How to show vi mode in bash?

I'm on Yosemite, using vi mode in bash (set -o vi in .bash_profile) and I want to have the prompt indicate if I'm in edit or command mode. I looked around and found that this feature has been implemented in bash 4.3 (see http://ift.tt/1x5LvhU) and can be turned on by setting the variable show-mode-in-prompt to on. I installed bash 4.3 using homebrew following these instructions. Now, when I execute bash --version I see GNU bash, version 4.3.33(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin14.1.0) and brew info readline returns readline: stable 6.3.8 (bottled) so it looks like I'm using the correct versions. However, when I execute set show-mode-in-prompt on or add it to ~/.inputrc based on the readline manual, the prompt still doesn't change based on the vi mode. What am I doing wrong?

VLC player does not remember last played position

I have been using MplayerX and recently thought of trying out VLC for watching movies. I noticed that the VLC player does not remember the last played position of the video. If I quit VLC and play the same video again, it plays it from the beginning.

Is this feature not provided by VLC? If not, is there any workaround to get this working?

IMessage Problem

i messaging my friend off my ipod . butt all of a sudden my imessages stop working and everything i click on his name it says number not registed with imessages . when i know he is .i cant message anyone on imessages anymore and i dont know why . can someone please help me figure this out .i have tried testing my network and i have tried resting my whole ipod touch i have tried reseting my imessages

my photo stream has gone

After doing the recent ios 8.2 update my photo stream has disappeared.

I have checked all through my phone and on the icloud and my photo stream is ticked.

All I have in my photos are 3 folders one say All Photos one says Videos & one says recently deleted. HELP!!!

How to force Mac (Yosemite) to use USB Bluetooth instead of internal?

I'm on an older Mac Pro, and I bought the ASUS USB-BT400 so that I can use Yosemite's Handoff feature. The problem is, I don't know how to disable the internal Bluetooth and force my machine to use the USB Bluetooth instead. I searched around but didn't find anything that worked.

Unable to properly boot Power Mac G5 running Debian without a screen connected

I've got Power Mac G5 running Debian 6 in headless mode as a media / home server.

When booting it without an attached screen, the fans ramp up from the idle speed to maximum over a couple of minutes. The red interior warning light is not lit.

The server is ping-able the entire time, but startup utilities such as SSH and other are never started - at least they are unreachable.

If a screen is connected until the login-prompt appears, it works just fine. Connecting a screen after booting does nothing; it must be connected the entire time.

I do not know, nor am I able to test if this is a problem when running Mac OS X.

Has anyone experienced this before, and if so, is there a solution to this?

How to simulate Airplane mode?

I'll be overseas and don't want to be racking up roaming or whatever other charges. Typically I would use the Airplane mode, but I still want to be able to take photos that have the geo locations recorded.

So I want to know whether turning off Settings/Cellular/Cellular Data will take care of what I want (e.g. remove the chance that I'll be inadvertently charged for something)? It says Cellular Data...does it mean I have to turn off Cellular Voice somewhere or does this do the trick?

Can I Scan an Image from the Commandline?

I have tried a few tools out there to scan an image using the commandline. I have tried scanimage with Twain Sane and scanline tool. The scanline output is a loop of the same error and scanimage with Twain is not picking up my local USB scanner, only a network scanner. I have the Scanner installed in the OSX Preferences. Is there a script that can scan an image other than those? Can Image Capture have a command line? Like using apple script? Thank You for your help.

Disable Application During Class

I'm teaching a class on Sunday and my wonderful but occasionally rebellious students love to quietly play Minecraft during class. Is there a way I can disable the Minecraft application during class time?

I believe all our computers are running OS X 10.8.

Project based Finder window presets

Does anyone know of software that would allow me to pull up a set of finder windows based on a project type. I'm a user experience manager who's constantly switching between projects and it would be awesome to be able to select "cart/checkout redesign" and it brings up all folders right where I left them. Finder windows are just the start to this dream tool of mine. Would love to be able to pull up everything right where I left them: files, applications, emails, etc. Almost like having a different computer for each project. I've researched the heck out of this and have found nothing like this. Spaces doesn't do it. There's lots of tools for managing windows but none that will pull up a set of windows and file locations based on a preset. "Finder Window Manager" is an old piece of software that sounded promising, but it didn't work at all given what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for any ideas and if you're a developer perhaps we could work together to make an app like this. I know it would be infinitely valuable to anyone who needs to quickly switch work tracks (which is basically everyone these days right)? I'm a seasoned UX expert in e-commerce biz both large and small so we could probably make something happen. Cheers, Peter

How to Save All notifications?

I have IOS 8 and I want to know how to save ALL of my notifications. What I mean is, I unlock the phone and then the notification disappears and I didn't read it. I have looked all over and there's no way I've found.

Can I run a disc image of a cloned Tiger or Leopard PPC drive on a modern Intel Mac via virtualization software?

I have a PowerMac G5 PPC running Tiger and an old, white, Santa Rosa MacBook running Leopard.

If I create cloned disc images of these OS drives, will I be able to run them in VMWare Fusion/Parallels/etc. on a modern Intel Mac?

If I were to create bootable clones of these drives, would these need to be formatted as APM on FireWire drives that would only be accessible from the G5 &/or SR MacBook as opposed to bootable clones formatted as GUID on USB drives accessible from any modern Mac?

Is there any reason I would want to clone the drives via Target Disk Mode, hooked up to an Intel Mac, as opposed to cloning them directly from their own interfaces or from an Intel Mac with access to them via ethernet LAN?

Selecting which application opens a file with given creator/type codes (System 7)

In System 7, when the user tries to open a document of a type which multiple installed applications can open*, it pops up a dialog asking which one to use. After one is chosen, that application seems to always be used to open that type of file, by default (although it can be manually opened in the other application(s)).

How would a user bring this dialog back -- thereby allowing them to choose another default application? If it's not possible to bring back the dialog per se, how can the user change the default application?

* I'm not sure which of the type code or the creator code, or both, the Finder is using to determine the available apps and the default app to open the document. I know how to change type and creator codes using either ResEdit or -- since the System 7 I'm using is emulated on OS X -- using SetFile -c and -t from OS X. But, seemingly, the initial choice of default application makes the Finder behave a certain way for all files similar to the one double-clicked; it doesn't change the type and creator codes.

Specification for CUPS printing options

I would like to ask if someone knows where can I find all the possible printing options the can CUPS send to backend/filter etc.

Use iPad as output device without iTunes?

I have an iPad with limited capacity. I waste a lot of time using iTunes on my MacBook Pro to delete content from the iPad and then sync'ing new content from the MBP. Not only does it waste time, I have to select movies and TV shows in advance.

Queston: How do I use the iPad as an output device to watch the material from the MacBook Pro? In this case, the MacBook Pro will simply be my personal storage device.

Related: I'll be doing this while flying, so things like spacious desktops and internet connectivity are out of the question. The MacBook Pro will be under the seat, and the iPad will be on the tray table.

The MacBook Pro clam shell is too big to fully open on the tray table, so I can't watch movies on it or operate programs like iTunes. And the cable for the iPad to the MackBook is too short to physically tether it.

About the only thing I will be able to do is turn on both devices, and use apps like Videos and iTunes on the device.

Related: the iPad Mini is running iOS 8.2 (fully patched). The MacBook Pro is running OS X 10.8.5 (fully patched). I have an iTunes account but it won't be accessible. I don't have an iCloud account and I don't want one (I have actively refused it since the iOS 6/7 days).

Related: years ago I tried to solve the problem by writing my own program to play the movie I was licensed (purchased under my iTunes account, all the hardware authorized under my account, etc). Sound not coming from headphones when plugged in

Material:

• MacBook Air 13-inch (MBA), Mid 2013, 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, OS X 10.10.2;


• 24-inch LED Cinema Display (3 cables: power, USB and Thunderbolt);


• iPhone 5 (and above headphones, with integrated mic).

Problem/issue:

• when the a/m MBA is connected to the Cinema Display and I plug the headphones, the sound still comes out of the Cinema Display, instead of the headphones;


• when the a/m MBA is NOT connected to the Cinema Display and the headphone is plugged in, sound is cut from the MBA speakers and is redirected to the headphones as it should be;


• in order to get the sound redirected to the headphones, I now have to launch System Preferences, Sound and switch manually to Headphone port;


• I also tried to change the headphones, but the problem remains.

This started maybe a week ago (but after upgrading to 10.10.2, from 10.10.1, not saying that the upgrade is at fault, though).

Any ideas?

Why would I want to turn on iTunes Match on an iOS device?

I'm a bit confused about iTunes in the Cloud vs. iTunes Match. My understanding is that iTunes in the Cloud allows me to have my songs in the cloud. I can see all my songs by turning on "Show all music" on my iOS device. iTunes Match allows me to add music to the Apple cloud that was not bought in iTunes. I have enabled that on my Mac to add music I buy from Amazon.

But why is there an iTunes Match switch on the iOS device? I cannot buy music on iOS and add it to iTunes and turning on "Show all music" already gives me all songs.
