Random apps are crashing as soon as they open, such as Acrobat, Word, Distiller and a few other smaller apps. I tried opening the apps on a 2nd user account and they open fine. I have also tried deleting my preferences via ▸ Users ▸ imac ▸ Library ▸ Preferences, but that has not helped.
This is getting very irritating!
I'm running Yosemite on an iMac.
I am pulling in my college calendar into my native Mac Calendar app. Everything works fine here, all my homework due dates are pulled in like they should.
I also use a app called Fantastical which allows you to sync your calendar and reminders. This is great for school as it allows you to set due dates (see below).
My question is, is there a way to have the Calendar app automatically create reminders based on the event's date and time?

I have a file that consistently causes errors in my backup utility (Unison). I'm trying to narrow down a bug and find out how it is different from other files. I copied that file and a copy backups fine so bug is not related to file contents. Then I renamed original to make sure a bug is not related to a filename.
So now I have 2 files with exact same contents, same xattrs (I checked) but one of them causes backup to fail. What else could be different between those files?
Also it is not a single case. I have many similar problem files all of which are created by the same program (DaVinci Resolve)
I do not want to change my Apple ID but it says I have to change it. I was on the family I PAd and I tried to put in my iTunes password but it didn't work because the iPad was attached to my husband's email account but I didn't know that (he changed it). After I linked it to my email account, it won't let me use my ID but says I have to create a new one. I am up to here with creating new passwords. Also, it acts like iTunes password and Apple ID are always the same, are they?

I have itunes match installed, it works great! I can stream all of my itunes collection using wifi or celluar network.
It also has a neat option to download music to the device so that you can enjoy it when there's no data connection. However, how can I actually SEE what music is on my device and delete some music or manage it?? So confusing. If you scroll down a songs list, you can see indivdual songs that are downloaded to a device and delete them that way... howver, I just want to ideally be able to plug my iphone into my computer and see EXACTLY what music is on my device so I can delete some songs to add room.

I've MacBook Air 11" Mid 2013 and I recently clean installed OS X Yosemite on it. The startup was real slow. It took more than 30 seconds to display the apple logo after pressing the power key so I decided to run Apple Hardware Test.
but the problem is that it won't progress. the screen displays "internet recovery. this may take a while" and it asks to connect to a wifi connection. then i selected my wifi connection but it won't progress from there.
P.S. I've never performed Apple Hardware Test before but I've done a lot of research on the internet about it. After selecting WiFi connection, it should prompt me for the password but it won't.
As a developer, I will be running and testing the webapps that I am developing in my local. But Chrome and safari are not allowing me to hit my local server with ssl enabled.
https://localhost:8443/ is not working saying SSL error with the following error message. I think, it is something to do with adding my certificate to mac key chain access, but I couldn't figure what actually needs to be done!

My ical has recently started to default to GMT as the timezone. I have my correct timezone selected in the top right drop down of the ical, but every meeting goes in as GMT and has to be manually changed back? Would appreciate any tips
I installed a windows 7 on macbook using bootcamp. Everything looks fine, but one thing. Here is stated that "Apple’s Boot Camp driver package automatically installs an HFS+ driver for Windows, which allows Windows to see your Mac partition. This partition shows up as “Macintosh HD” under Computer on your Windows system." But I don't see this partition. I tried to download and install bootcamp drivers manually taking them from apple page, but this didn't help. I tried to download HFS+ drivers, but when I install them the system sais that they are installed already.
Why I don't see the partition? Has apple changed this for yosemite?

I have a Macbook Pro Mid-2010 with mavericks. The problem is today my computer turned off suddenly, I think due to a battery. It's been telling me to replace it for awhile but I just haven't had the money to do so. I am not certain this is even the reason for what it's doing now. But for awhile it would just turn off suddenly but I'd restart it and it would come back up and be fine for a long time. But today when it cut off I turned it back on and got the apple logo but then it wouldn't get passed that then I started hearing this grinding/scratching sound coming from the lower right corner of the computer. Possibly the hard-drive? So I restarted and now it's just a white screen with the opening noise with these consistent scratching and grinding sounds. I don't know if this matters and I don't want to jump the gun because it maybe for the reasons listed but I recently bought some neodymium magnets which are very powerful and they might have come in contact with the computer...however it was working fine today and magnets weren't close to it. so probably not.
Please help! I am now on a dreadful pc

I tried to install Windows 8 into my Mac via Bootcamp. I booted into the Windows 8 Installer and had issues formatting the drive that I partitioned for the OS.
Like an idiot, I deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive, except my main OSX partition. I believe the partitions I deleted were 600MB, 3MB, 1GB(Not sure if they were this large). But im certain I deleted one that was 600MB.
After exiting out of the Windows installer, I booted up my Mac again only see the Windows partition as an option. When I go into recovery mode, I see the partition still there, but I cant really interact with it. Does anyone know what I need to do to make my OSX partition bootable again? I went into DU(Recovery Mode) and tried mounting through DU but nothing happens.
The image shows my "diskutil list" output. My OSX partition is disk0s1. I am stuck and don’t want to lose my data/am trying to boot into my machine again.
We have multiple devices on the same Apple ID. When playing games such as Clash of Clans how do you set each device up so they don't share.....they all want to log in to that same app on different devices independently of the others.
Is there a way to reset a iPad or wipe it out to factory reset if you don't know the iCloud password. Don't know iCloud password. Impossible to get pass this point. Is there a way to factory reset without this.
I have a business colleauge that my mail prgramme thinks is sending junk mail. I have added them to my contacts. I also set up a rule that any email from that address go into my inbox, but neither of those steps have worked and all messages still go into junk.

I just upgraded to Yosemite and I noticed in Mail that the folder/account are listed in the Inbox section right after the subject. I don't remember seeing this before. Is there a way (terminal flag, perhaps) to turn this off so the Subject of the message isn't truncated?
I, perhaps unwisely, installed iFunBox based on an article in a respected Computer Magazine APC.
This appears to have installed a Search Engine in my browsers. It was easy to remove from Firefox, but I can't seem to delete search.strtpoint.com from Chrome.
Safari now crashes whenever I run it.
Any ideas on how to fix these problems?
Is there a setting that would allow me to wrap workspace switching? For example, what would I have to do to make it so that if I kept switching left I would eventually end up where I started.
I'm using Yosemite if that's relevant.

The iOS 8 Health app shows the current day's data for steps in the Dashboard and when viewing Steps individually. If you pick View Data, you can see individual recording of steps; there are many of these per day, usually 5-10 steps at a time. However, I see no way to view the totals for a previous day, i.e. if I walked 10000 steps yesterday, is it possible to see that within the app?
I'm having the most frustrating problem with iCloud on one of my Macs. Firstly, the Mac (a late 2012 iMac) was working flawlessly with all iCloud services up until a few days ago. Now, I am able to login to iCloud in my OS X user account fine, but no messages are ever displayed, no continuity features work, Messages will not send (some users show as not being registered with iMessages, some the message simply fails to send, and if I text myself I see the iMessage on that Mac only), FaceTime tries to dial but never completes, etc. This happens on all user accounts with all iCloud accounts on this Mac, not just mine. The same iCloud account works fine on a different computer (MacBook Air) and an iPhone running newest version of iOS 8.
I'm not at all sure if it's related, but I created a Mavericks VM in VMWare Fusion and signed in to iMessages on that VM on the iMac just before the time it started having issues, which worked and continues to work fine (the VM running on the "broken" iMac).

edit: Mac has been connected to the network via WiFi and ethernet since problems began, no difference on either networks. Other Macs and iOS devices working fine on the network, and the network works great for all non-iCloud related stuff. I can go online, send files over network, etc. No issues.
I recently switched from Ubuntu, and I was feeling very comfortable with using Ctrl + Alt + T to launch terminal. Can I assign Shift + Cmd + T to do the same thing in Yosemite? Specifically, I want a new terminal window to be opened.
In Maps navigation mode, is there a way to zoom out? I'm trying the pinch-out gesture, but it doesn't work.
I am able to rearrange the dock icons for a period of time after each restart, though I have not been able to determine the length of time. Then I am not able to rearrange the dock icons again.
I have tried the solutions found here: Can't rearrange Dock icons
The killall Dock command did not do anything.
Deleting the com.apple.dock.plist file only seemed to work due to the restart because after a while the issue came back.
Is there a way to fix this issue so that I do not have to restart every time I want to rearrange icons?
i've recently formatted my MAC OS X into snow leopard and unfortunately all the photos on Iphoto library on MAC was gone. i had no previous back ups for mac or even for my iphone 5S. i can't find the application anymore and apparently it doesnt support it even. i have had iphone since november 2013 so i am not sure if i could restore all the photos and videos i once had on my iphone or not.

I have a PowerMac G5 with OS X Server 10.5.8 and a current-generation Time Capsule. I'm trying to make the G5 the internet-facing link in the network as it runs all the services I would access remotely. I want to bridge the Time Capsule to the G5 so that I can do that.
Here's the problem: I turned DHCP and NAT. I set the subnet to 10.0.0.x over Ethernet 2 (my LAN). I went into AirPort Utility on my iPad (the G5's is too old for my Time Capsule) and set it to bridge mode. But when I connect any devices to the Time Capsule, they get self-assigned values.
Could you please help me out and walk me through configuring this? Thanks!

Due to Verizon's recent X-UIDH/packet sniffing shenanigans, I've installed a L2TP VPN on my iPhone. I have no trouble connecting to the VPN, but I have to remember to do it every time I connect to Verizon's network/open my phone etc.
Is there a profile I can download, or some other trick I can use to have the VPN default to "on"? So it turns on when I connect to LTE or unlock my phone or some other trigger. It looks like there are some guides out there but once they started talking about plists

my unix-based typesetting system complains. Is there a way to rectify that other than renaming my folders?

Is there any way to show gif (animated) images in a slideshow or a screensaver? The screensaver app does not animate the gifs and the only way to view gifs is through Quick Look.
In Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks when a PDF document opened in Preview is modified by an external application, Preview automatically reopens the new version with the same page displayed as before.
After updating to Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite this behavior changed, and each time a PDF is modified externally, Preview reopens on the first page. This is quite annoying, since when I work with many LaTeX documents, I recompile them often to verify how a slight changes in code render in the PDF.
The question is, can I bring back the previous behavior of Preview or I'm forced to change my default PDF viewer to other application?
I currently own a mid-2011 iMac which currently has 4 GB of RAM. The computer is currently running OS X Mavericks but I am thinking of upgrading it to Yosemite soon...
I often use the computer to develop iPhone apps and browse the web (often with many, many tabs open simultaneously).
When I'm there only user logged in and I only have Xcode and Safari open, xcode seems to be quite slow. What I mean by this is when I switch from one file to another it usually takes a few seconds. Even the iOS simulator seems slow.
So my question is, if I upgrade the ram to 8 or 16 GB, will it help to fix the slowness?
Also, if I upgrade to Yosemite, will that affect the speed of the computer?

I suspect my Macbook Pro has been hacked by sophisticated hackers who may have even customized some special malware for my computer. Is there anyway to tell from looking at the MacBook Pro Activity Monitor like spotting hidden files and other potential unknown processes. What can I do above and beyond installing an anti-virus program to identify if someone is hacking the computer? Energy usage and server traffic statistics..?

For the last few weeks, I keep getting the same spam message sent by my iCloud account to my iCloud account. I'm not seeing any other weird behavior in my iCloud.
I did change my linked email to a different one and changed my passwords in both several times but I'm still receiving the emails. How do I get them to stop?
I see a number of posts on how to delete the WhereFrom extended attributes data, but I would like to do the opposite and extract the information into a file.
I download Creative Commons photos from Flickr and provide photo credits on my blog.
I would like to set up a Folder Action that extracts the WhereFrom URL from the photo into a file, that way I can easily copy-paste the URL into my blog photo credit. It would also give me an archive of all my downloads.
I tried to reverse-engineer some of the delete scripts on StackExchange but didn't have any luck.
I already have a recurring scheduled DND set for my phone for every evening through morning. However, I have calendar events that I would like to automatically trigger DND. For example, let's say I have a meeting with a co-worker, I'd like to be able to enter that into my calendar and select a "DND" option for that time. So, once the event is over, my phone is back to normal, and I don't have to worry about silencing it myself. Is this possible?
I'm experiencing a very weird network issue on my newish (2014) macbook pro. I've noticed it the last few weeks, but it could have been around longer, perhaps dating back to the Yosemite upgrade. I'm only getting to look at it now.
Mostly macbook works fine, but every now and again it stops talking to the internet. It seems to happen every 15-20 minutes, for a duration ranging from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes. It's mainly an issue for Skype, where I experience occasional disconnections.
I have run ping youtube.com and it reports Request timeout for <ip-address> at times corresponding to my outages. Note that it does not say No route to host.
I have also run ping against my router IP-address and this always works without fault. thus issues on wireless interface can be ruled out.
I have run ping on my actual router too, against the youtube IP-adress, and this reports no fault. this rules out actual service-provider network issues.
I have run ping from my iPhone, and this reports no problems so the issue is almost certainly something to do with macbook, rather than wifi devices in general.
Apple's wireless diagnostics utilities do detect the outages, but provide no solutions. The tools it provides also show no wireless congestion issues, and no problems with signal.
I've tried a whole slew of fixes:
I'm going to have a go at the PRAM reset thing if the issue becomes chronic again, and I really don't think I should have to resort to an O/S reinstall.
I would like to understand though, even theoretically what is going on here. It's driving me bananas!
We have wi-fi at home but each time I turn on my mac it goes to an unlocked wi-fi NOT our own and I have to go into wi-fi on tool bar to select our own home wi-fi. I just want to eliminate those competing options and save the step of always choosing our home network
I need to move photos from an old eMac to a new iPad Air. The eMac won't be used anymore after everything is transferred. I already tried the following approaches, but they didn’t quite have the expected result:

As of January 2015, I have a brand new Macbook Air running all fully updated Yosemite 10.10.
I have been simply trying to configure the mac OS mail app to work with a simple, normal Yahoo Mail account.
I add the account, it appears correctly in the Preferences settings as an internet account with "mail" checked... it creates entries in the left pane of the Mail window. BUT... nothing ever appears in the Inbox. AND, it DOES succeed in loading the many sub-folders within the mail account that I have configured in yahoo... AND, if I click on one of those, then after 20 seconds, it loads the folder's contents fine. AND, when I SEND mail, it sends out just fine. But nothing in the normal, plain Inbox!
I have created it several times. Once I even tried to force it to allow me to "manually" create the inbox without it sniffing that it was a yahoo account and applying the official yahoo settings it knows. I did that by initially putting extra false characters in the yahoo domain name, and then setting up all the IMAP and SMTP stuff manually, and then changing the initial domain name entry to remove the wrong characters. But the results were exactly the same -- empty inbox.
AND, when I have yahoo set up in the normal way (but not working right...) and I go to the Connection Doctor... it scans through and gives the green-light indicator saying that IMAP and SMTP are working fine!
Any info, tips, or similar issues with Yahoo Mail and the mail.app in Yosemite?

We use Trello (Kanban project management / collaboration app) allot at work, every one has it set up on their iPhones.
When a person is mentioned / contacted in the app they get an iOS notification / alert, this is fine during working hours, but over the weekend / late at night i guess this gets quite irritating.
Is there a way that an end user can put select app notifications 'to sleep' for certain hours of the day / days of the week ?
I have created a number of "internet" accounts for mail in Mac OS, but for various reasons they didn't work, and I deleted them from the listings in the preferences, and of course they therefore don't appear in the Mac OS Mail app either. In fact, there are now zero accounts registered with mail abilities and zero appearing in my Mail app.
BUT, if I go to Mail, and choose Connection Doctor, it still scans those old email accounts to see if they can connect or not!
So it is clearly "retaining" those old accounts... and their credentials!! (because they are actually giving green lights for successful connection!) ...
How do I get it to forget those old accounts? Cleanse that oddly cached account info?

I create quite a few screencasts to show colleagues how to do more complex tasks and share bugs that i am finding.
For this I use the File > Screenrecording feature in quicktime.
Once im done recording i save the video to the relevant location, but the exported videos are often 20-30mb even for a relatively short one.
What i tend to do at the moment is then run these videos through Handbrake (open source video compressing software) which gets the videos down to a much more manageable (email-able) size, usually between 2-5mb.
The only issue with this is its another step, and involves opening other software letting it process etc.
Is there a built in export / compression tool in quicktime where i can export smaller videos ?
I ran various commands in Terminal app, including calls to "open" from Midnight Commander (although, that might be completely unrelated) and suddenly it started to behave strangely. The cursor was gone, I could type commands but could not see them on the screen. I tried typing "reset" but that did not help.
Trying to open a new Terminal was not possible (CMD+W or CMD+T not working and menu items greyed out). I decided to close it and reopen, but the Quit menu item is also greyed out.
Does anyone know what are conditions that disabled Quit?
OS X Yosemite introduce few extensions like sharing extensions. With some defaults one like share with Apple Mail, iMessage, ... but today thoses extensions are missing for me. Is there's any knowed way, even with CLI to restaure them ?
Last week, my 6-year-old lost a Minecraft Pocket world / save and was devastated because our last iTunes backup was from before she created it, and our last iCloud backup was made since the world was deleted, and as far as I can tell it looks like the iCloud "backup" is a snapshot of the entire filesystem at the time it's made, with no history.
So, the Apple-provided backup mechanisms failed me. They're not granular enough and don't keep a history of file states. I need to back up individual files.
I just found out that it's possible to access (portions of) the filesystem on an iOS device without jailbreaking, using desktop applications like iExplorer and iFunBox. This is great, because I can back up the data in my applications manually. The problem is that, since it's a UI, I can't automate the process to make a regular, periodic backup. I have to make a new backup by hand, every time.
What I really want is basically Time Machine, for iOS application data. I don't expect that level of polish, but I'd like to be able to use whatever mechanism is used by iFunBox to talk to the iDevice filesystem, ideally from the command line, which would let me script backups to occur on a regular basis. Failing that, an application like iFunBox that automatically backs up specified apps' file data would be great.
Is this possible? Is it being done today?
My Yahoo Mail does not receive new mail. It sends, but no new mail arrives. I cannot update Yahoo Mail app, as I am using the latest version. Can I delete the mail app and reinstall it without messing up my Apple account which is tied to the Yahoo Mail account?

I tried to download HFS+ drivers, but when I install them the system sais that they are installed already.
Why I don't see the partition? Has apple changed this for yosemite?
I'm helping a friend update her iMac's OSX from 10.6.8 to the latest available for the hardware. That would be easy, if it weren't that the computer has only a 56k connection to the Internet, and so downloading updates would be unfeasible (and ridiculously costly). I don't have access to any other machine running OSX, only Windows and Linux. Also, I only have an unlimited internet connection at work, so physically bringing the computer there is not an option.
What are my options?
I am using the following code to send an email. I am checking my email but I am not receiving it. The problem is not with my email as I am able to communicate with other normally.

Also, as a side note, I am clearing the email in the mail app where a different account is logged in. Therefore, the email I sent should be untouched.
I am on OSX 10.10.1. As of very recently (can't be more than a couple of days, else I would've noticed it sooner I think), I am able to quit the Finder by hitting ⌘-Q, which will quit the Finder app, not only close the window. There is also a Quit Finder menu entry, I don't know if that was there before. I asked someone who also uses Yosemite and as expected, they can't do it.
The question is: Why is this suddenly possible, has anyone else experienced it and how can I revert this change?
I've MacBook Air 11" Mid 2013 and I recently clean installed OS X Yosemite on it. The startup was real slow. It took more than 30 seconds to display the apple logo after pressing the power key so I decided to run Apple Hardware Test. BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT WON'T PROGRESS. THE SCREEN DISPLAYS "INTERNET RECOVERY. THIS MAY TAKE A WHILE" AND IT ASKS TO CONNECT TO A WIFI CONNECTION. THEN I SELECTED MY WIFI CONNECTION BUT IT WON'T PROGRESS FROM THERE. P.S. I've never performed Apple Hardware Test before but I've done a lot of research on the internet about it. After selecting WiFi connection, it should prompt me for the password but it won't.
I want to multiboot my MacBook Pro, I'm trying to make partitions but in Disk Utility I can't make my partitions, only can divide by 2? Why? It's a normal SSD not a fusion drive (SSD+HD)
Now I'm fresh installing my Mac with Internet recovery... (Second time) but this time in disk utility by internet recovery instead click on erase I clicked in partitions and make a partition named Macintosh HD
what I'm doing wrong?

I have an iMac whose wifi connection has always worked very well. Now that I moved in a shared house with a shared wifi internet, the iMac is not able to see our own wifi network, but it is able to see other wifi networks in the vicinity.
I have another laptop with ubuntu installed, and that is able to see the network and to connect, from the same room where the iMac is.
I have tried to make a new connection with the name and password of the network (which I know for sure because they are the same used on the ubuntu connection) but it does not appear in the network list.
I have tried to read more on the internet, but all the thread are related to connections which can not be accessed, while in my case the iMac can not even see the network.
Any advice? I do not knwo what kind of details are needed to define this case, but I will be happy to furnish any necessary data.
Is there anyway to prevent that whatever app change the default app for some kind of files?
As an example, my default app for movies (mp4, mkv, avi, ...) is VLC, and I don't want this to be changed for whatever reasons.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as a legit question here, but I don't know where else to ask.
I have installed the Call of Duty 2 MAC version on my iMac. My system capabilities (RAM, processor, video) are way above the recommended requirements, so I would have expected the game to run smooth.
However, in-game, doesn't matter if I am in the main menu or playing, it keeps freezing for about 2 seconds, every 10 seconds or so. I have set the quality settings to maximum and minimum, and it's the same.
Clearly it has nothing to do with in-game quality settings, as it does this even while in the main menu.
Any idea what the problem might be? I suspect my computer (1.5 years old iMac, 2.7GHz i5, 8GB@1600MHz DDR3, GeForce GT 640M 512MB) has a problem... it does boot slower than when I bought it... and overall it's not as fast.
My MacBook got a small water damage some time ago. Luckily everything still works without any problems except the iSight camera, which is no longer detected. I reinstalled Mac OS X a couple of times since, so I'm sure it's not a software issue. Since a replacement looks pretty cheap and I have all the tools to open up my MacBook, I was wondering, if there are any guides on how to replace the camera. I googled a lot and also checked on Youtube, but could not find anything suitable. How hard would such a replacement be? Can I make sure it's the camera and not some other hardware issue before I try to replace it? On the other hand how much would it cost to have the camera replaced by Apple?
