Too-long file name: which iOS app owns it?

I have an iPhone that I back up to a Mac (via iTunes), and the backup is failing. The error shown in iTunes is useless, but the console shows this:

Jan 6 20:53:58 aron-mbp.local AppleMobileBackup[71561]: ERROR: Backup message response: 101 stat error: File name too long (63) at path "/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/C3147DA8-A001-4A6C-BF8D-971DC2678722/Documents/iCache/http://ift.tt/14tPFDt....nT+soTf+" (MBErrorDomain/101)

(I've snipped quite a lot of characters out of the file name, as it is, in fact, extremely long.)

So, it looks like some app has created this huge-named file, which is stuffing up the backup process because iOS can't stat it and barfs.

I figure, deleting the offending app should delete the file and fix the problem. But: which app is it? All I have to go on is the unique ID or whatever it's called, C3147DA8-A001-4A6C-BF8D-971DC2678722. Is there a way to determine which app this corresponds to? I'm happy to dig through the ipa files if necessary.

(I've tried deleting the Pinterest app, given the presence of 'pinterest.com' in the path, with no luck. I've shotgunned a few others, again with no luck.)

This is iOS 8.1.2.

Why is iBooks highlighting feature so slow?

I have a macbook pro mid 2012 i56 with 4 gb ram and osx yosemite. My problem is very simple why is the iBooks highlighting feature so slow. I have even disabled sync highlights and bookmarks automatically across devices.

Slow in the sense that every highlight takes time to save and the highlighting feature is disabled for that period of time. Also there are no shortcuts and the highlight prompt that pops up after selecting the text takes time.

I use iBooks a lot while reading Epub files. Any way to sort out this problem? Thanks.

Clash of Clans sync problem

My son has been playing clash of clans under my Game Center acct on my husbands iPhone 5s for months and at Christmas he got his own iPhone 4. He's logged into Game Center under my acct on his own phone however he to start from scratch on clash of clans. He tried doing a sync between phones but was unsuccessful. Can someone please explain the process to me if there is one?

Extending 2007 iMac display to HD projector?

I have a 2007 iMac and an Epson 730HD projector. I want to dedicate this iMac to playing media on the projector but I'm having problems with extending my display.

I'm using a MiniDVI to HDMI adapter and connecting to the projector using an HDMI cable. The computer is detecting the projector, but the projector is saying there's no signal. I've tried playing with all of the resolution settings–thinking that maybe the projector just didn't like the resolution that the computer was sending–as I've had this problem before with other displays and setting the resolution to "Best for display" usually did the trick. The projector has a native resolution of 1280 x 720, I've tried every scaled resolution while extending the display and while mirroring. No luck.

My MiniDVI to VGA adapter works, so this appears to be only an HD problem.

Is there anything I haven't tried? Or is my iMac just too old for this projector?

Remove dropbox icon from Finder toolbar

The dropbox icon keeps reappearing in my finder toolbar, no matter how many times I Command Drag it off, or remove it in customize toolbar. How can I get rid of this annoying button that keeps coming back? Toolbar with Dropbox icon

The solution in this one answer does not solve my issue as the button is removed, but as soon as I open a new finder window it is back. I am running OS X 10.10.2 (14C81f) with Dropbox 3.0.3.

How to get file path of user selected .icns file in applescript?

I'm writing an applescript in which I need the POSTIX path to an .icns file that the user selects. For some reason though, it refuses to accept .icns as a valid file type.

This will work:

set Icon to (POSIX path of (choose file of type {"png"} with prompt "Select a .png file."))

But this won't:

set Icon to (POSIX path of (choose file of type {"icns"} with prompt "Select a .icns file."))

When the script is run, it won't let me any files, including .icns files.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Also, I'm running 10.8.5 if it helps, and if there is an easy way to convert .png files to .icns files with applescript, I'm open to that too.

visualise on a map the location of the photos inside a folder

Is there a software that I can point to a folder to see a map of the area of all the pictures present in that folder? With tiny thumbnails or dots. Similar to what can be done directly on the iPhone, but for osx.

How do I get music labeled under "various artists" to appear under the artist themselves?

I'm uploading some of my albums and I have a few things (such as soundtracks) that have multiple artists on the album. I want the individual songs to show up under the artist instead of the "various artist" label. I've tried unclicking the "part of compilation" button, but it isn't quite working. Any suggestions?

How to use keynote magic move with Connection Lines?

When I use magic move with connetion lines, they disappear and reappear in the next slide.

It seems like magic move doesn't recognize the connection lines (or can't match them), so it just redraws them, instead of leaving them there.

I'm trying to use magic move to make a nice presentation that includes connection lines. How can I make without the lines disappearing every time something moves?

OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 Time Machine backup will not restore to Fusion Drive in Early 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1

Back Story

For the past couple of years, I've been using my MBP with great results under OS X 10.7.x Lion. The specs: moved the 320gb factory 5400 spinner to the optical bay and installed an OCZ Vertex 4 256gb SSD in the main SATA spot.

I've installed OS updates but nothing past Lion. The OS has been running on the SSD while the spinning drive in the optical bay has been used for storage.

I've decided to make the jump to Yosemite 10.10.1 but wanted a fresh install rather than upgrading. I did quite a bit of research regarding the use of 3rd party SSDs, HDDs, Fusion, etc. I read countless blogs and forum threads before touching anything.

Although I have several Time Machine backups already, I decided to make a new backup on a different drive than my standard backup drive. In addition, I made a complete clone of both drives (OS on SSD and storage on spinner) to a fresh 1TB drive so I could at least boot to that if I needed to use anything while in this process (going on a week now).

After all backups were complete, I pushed forward!

I removed the 320gb and replaced it with a 1tb HGST 7200 SATA III. Before removing this of course, I made sure that my machine would support the SATA III drive, and it did. I learned that some of the 2011 MBPs were hit-and-miss with the optical bay port; some were only 3 Gb/s. After attempting to format everthing, I was having a problem locating the new 1tb 7200 drive in the optical bay. I verified that it worked with my USB adapter so I swapped the drives. Now the spinner is in the main SATA port and the SSD has been moved to the optical port. Both can be seen by disk utility (USB boot from Yosemite Install Disk).

I want to create a Fusion Drive instead of managing the storage disk separately like I was with Lion. I formatted both drives with 1 GUID partition each and successfully created a Logical Volume Group and then a usable volume from the Group. I successfully created a Fusion Drive; two drives into 1, now called Macintosh HD.

I continued with the installer creating the recovery partition and made it through the install without any problems, or so I thought. Upon rebooting I was faced with the white screen and probihitory symbol (circle with a slash). I was able to remove my instal USB drive and restart with cmd+r to boot in recovery mode from the internal boot disk. I could then see via diskutil that the Logical Volume Group was still intact and there was the recovery partion (which I was currently booting from) along with the Macintosh HD partition which appeared to have the 12 or so gigs of data that I would suspect the OS would take up from a fresh install.

I referred to several articles using 3rd party SSDs and disabling kext signing since I wasn't using "Apple Verified Drives." This led me to http://ift.tt/1vUIizO. After trying their solution to disable kext signing and then another reboot, the apple logo apperared for a few seconds with the proress bar below and immediately went back to the prohibitory symbol.

I reset the NVRAM, and reinstalled Yosemite again with the same results as before I manually tried to bypass the kext signing. This time I tried bypassing the kext signing with this version http://ift.tt/17hrysE which didn't seem to work for me either. Upon reboot, the same prohibitory sybol awaited me after about 6 seconds of the apple logo.

I spent a lot more time reading blogs and forums and tried various other things but didn't get it to boot into OS X.

Next, I deleted the Logical Volume group and started fresh with both drives independent of each other. I decided to do an internet recovery. From there I was able to get a fresh copy of Lion to my system, and updated to 10.10.1. I restarted the computer several times using Restart and Shut Down commands and even reset the NVRAM a couple times and never had a problem booting back up to Yosemite. I then made a Time Machine backup and restored it to the other disk. I now how the identical Yosemite OS on both the 256gb SSD in the optical bay and the 1tb 7200 HDD in the main SATA port.

I shall note that I never had to bypass the kext signing.

Enough of the Back Story

Now that I have verified that my machine can run Yosemite 10.10.1 on both drives independently, naturally I decided to strip the drives back down and format them how I originally intended as a Fusion Drive. If I recall correctly (I've formatted these drives so many different times in the past week) I had to delete the Logical Volume Group on each disk since Yosemite created them (even though I wasn't using Fusion Drives). Then got each disk formatted with 1 GUID partion, created a Logical Volume Group and then a usable volume. This all appeared to work great; I could now see my 1.25tb Fusion Drive ready for a Time Machine backup.

I then booted from the Yosemite USB Installer, went through the steps to restore from a Time Machine backup which was on an external drive. I chose the backup of 10.10.1 (same one that I previously loaded), selected the destination (the only drive listed was the new 1.25tb drive that I created) chose to continue. For the first couple of attempts, I didn't watch the progress. When returning to my machine, I was greeted back to the welcome/install screen from the installer (to continue in English...)

After a couple of tries, I decided to sit and watch the recovery. When the progress bar reached approximately 50% (10-15min) I was greeted with the window displaying "Success!" and the progress bar with half remaining. Below that, it was counting down "the machine will restart in 10..9..8.." It stopped at 8 and hung. I let it sit for a few minutes and noticed that header/task bar above (apple icon and menus) weren't respondig so I decided to force-quit by holding down the power button.

After booting yet again, I was back to the same welcome/install screen as before. I removed the TM drive and booted in recovery mode, launched terminal, could see the Logical Volume Group, recovery partition, but noticed that the OS X volume was about 4.5gb or so.

Like I mentioned, I've read countless blogs and forums, tried countless re-boots, re-installs, but can't seem to get the Yosemite to run from a Fusion Drive. I've heard of others with my dated MBP (and older) work. I understand that I can continue like I did with Lion and manually manage my spinning drive but would like to make this Fusion Drive work.

Any suggestions?

How to manually uninstall the Lexicon Lambda driver?

My Lexicon Lambda just stopped responding to audio apps (Sound Forge, Reaper). It won't record anymore - applications just freeze for a few seconds and nothing happens, recording stopped, nothing recorded. I suspect it's about the driver. The same interface is recording on a Windows computer as I'm typing this, so the device is not deffective.

I have tried the Lexicon's uninstaller, then installed latest drivers, then removed them again, restarted as many times as was required. The problem persisted.

I have deleted a Lambda-related file from the /System/Library/Extensions/. The problem persisted.

Does anyone know how to completely wipe anything related to the Lexicon Lambda audio interface from the Mountain Lion? Thanks in advance...

iTunes update keeps reappearing even after several updates

iTunes software update keeps appearing in the app store even after several updates of the same. Has anyone faced a similar issue? When I try to update it, the download begins and installs and again reappears on the App store. Moreover this is happening in my new mac. I'm unable to find the root cause for this issue.

Internal microphone does not register input in System Preferences -> Sound but registers in dictation and speech

My machine is MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS 10.10.1 (14B25).

I just tried to make a voice call in Google Hangouts, and Hangouts does not pick up any sound.

I checked System Preferences -> Sound -> Internal Microphone, and the Input Level meter shows no activity - not when I talk, clap, or hit the case.

How do I fix this and get my internal microphone to register an input correctly?

More info:

System Preferences -> Dictation and Speech -> Dictation has an icon that says "Internal Microphone" and appears to register sound. In fact, it seems to be very sensitive.

Some things I have checked:

  • Under Sound -> Internal Microphone, Input volume is turned all of the way up.

  • I have no devices plugged into the headphone jack.

  • In Audio MIDI Setup, I've checked that Built-in Microphone isn't muted.

  • I shut down the computer and started it up again, and again while holding command-option-p-r (although I don't actually know what that does). It didn't help.

Change iTerm2 Default profile preset with "defaults write..."

I want to do this in my dotfiles script.

I managed to download the preset I want using curl and open it, but I don't know how to set it in the default profile.

I tried AppleScript, but I never used it, and it seemed to be too much work for little... I believe it could be a simpler way, using defaults write, for example.

Any ideas?

How to Make an NTFS Shared Volume Writable

I am on a Macbook Pro with OS X Yosemite. I have another Mac Mini running Windows 8 that I have connected to via a Router.

I am essentially trying to share files from an NTFS volume, but I need to make it writable. I open a Finder window and then do Go -> Connect to Server and then enter the name of my Mac Mini Shared Folder.

Everything works great, but it's only read only. I've tried editing the /etc/fstab file using the following TutsPlus Tutorial, but that didn't work.

I'm looking into using mount_ntfs on the command line but I just can't get my head around it just yet.

I'd appreciate a little assistance.

showmount returns error

I have two Mac's on my LAN. One runs 10.9.5 and the other runs OS X 10.10. Both show the same response (see below) when I try to run showmount.

showmount: Cannot retrieve info from host: localhost: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Remote system error

The server on my LAN is Ubuntu (NFS). And both Mac's are connecting to the NFS shares on the server without any problems and all other networking functionality is fine (Internet, printing, etc.).

And the showmount command works from other (non-Mac) clients on the network. I would like to get showmount to work from Mac OS X. Any suggestions?

Two-page view disabled in iBook for some book

I've purchased a book from the iBooks Store that has the two-page view mode disabled on my Mac (OSX 10.9 running iBooks 1.01). iBook can show other books in two-page view mode with no problem. But this specific book has almost all menus under "View" greyed out. Is there anyway to fix it? The book seems to be only designed for iPad in vertical mode, and the single-page view mode only takes less than half of my Macbook screen and cannot be zoomed to fill the full screen.

2012 MacMini HDD died while installing Win 10 Tech Preview

I have a problem with a 2012 MacMini. diskutil list shows an internal 500 GB 5400 rpm drive as having 0 Bytes.

It also states that it is unknown. Would TestDisk be able to reformat the drive?

Disk Utility will not let me format or partition, all options are greyed out. Any ideas on resurrecting a drive in this state?

The history of events:

Using the Internet recovery brings up the Mountain Lion Installer but can not proceed with the disk problem been: Not recognized.

How do I format my HDD now and start over.

If I were to remove the drive from the mini and insert it into an external case, would I be able format it as JHFS+/GUID or FAT32/MBR?

Drag-and-Drop from Stack in list view

I have a few "Stacks" in my Dock, where "Stack" is apparently the name for having a folder in the Dock. If the Stack is in grid view, I can drag-and-drop files from the grid. But if the Stack is in list view, I can't drag-and-drop.

But some of the files I want to access have long names and are not unique at the beginning and end. Since grid view chops out the middles of long filenames, I can't find which file is which. Point being: I want list view. But I also want to be able to drag-and-drop.

I've found that enabling an alternate list view via:

defaults write com.apple.dock use-new-list-stack -bool YES && killall Dock

does allow me to drag-and-drop from list view, but it also starts eliding the middles of filenames, though not quite as badly as grid view.

Is this just an arbitrary limitation or is there something I can do to fix this?

How to view certificate info without installing

I have a certificate and/or private key file (pfx) on my OS X desktop. I'd like to look at its information (CN, SAN, OU, thumbprint, etc) but when I double click on it, it attempts to install into my Keychain. Once its in there, I can see the info and then delete it.

I would like to know if there is a way to "open" a certificate for viewing without having to install it into your Keychain. Similar to how you can click on the padlock in Safari and see the cert info.

I'd prefer something native to OS X but maybe there are tools out there too?

Can I install and use Windows on an external USB 3 drive in Boot Camp

I'd like to try Windows 10 Technical Preview before it is released for purchase. I am curious and have never used a windows based machine before. Question: Is it possible to install and run Windows 10 Technical Preview under BootCamp

Files are not showed in Finder

Recently, I noticed that on the files on my external hard drive are not shown in Finder. All folders can still be navigated, but the files are not visible. When I check the contents of these folders in terminal, I can see the files are still on those locations and can also be opened with VLC for example.

Does anybody know what the issue could be? I only found one similar question, where they suggested that the com.apple.IconServices was causing the problem, however the proposed solution did not help in my case.

I am working on OSX 10.8.5.

Safari not loading Gmail; Google/YouTube invalid certificate

I've tried changing DNS servers to OpenDNS's, I've cleared my history and website data from Safari, and I've uninstalled all extensions… but the browser just won't load Gmail! Whether I click on Sign In at google.com or enter gmail.com in my address bar, the page just never loads.

Not sure if related, but when I try visiting YouTube, Safari says the certificate is invalid. I click to proceed anyway, and the page automatically redirects to http://ift.tt/1xu3wEW? It's a blank page. What's up with the auto-redirection? When I try to visit youtube.com again, I get served a site with no stylesheet or images. google.com loads without a problem although Safari throws up the invalid certificate warning as well.

Gmail loads fine on the Safari-only guest account, if it helps. My hosts file is ok. I'm using OS X 10.10.1 and Safari 8.0.2.

automount: Another automount is running

I'm trying to reload NFS mounts on my machine. What has worked in the past is:

sudo dscl .
delete Mounts/
exit
sudo autmount -vc

But now I get the error:

automount: Another automount is running

Doing a

sudo ps -ax | grep automount

shows there's only one process (besides the grep command itself) that contains "automount":

admin% sudo ps -ax | grep -i automount
59770 ?? 0:00.01 /usr/sbin/automount
60201 ttys018 0:00.00 grep -i automount

I've tried killing it and rerunning sudo automount -vc and sudo automount -vcu, but no luck.

Has anyone else encountered this error message, or have any ideas on how to fix it?

How can I connect multiple wireless headphones to the same Iphone 6 at the same time?

I like to listen to audio files on my Iphone 6 while jogging outdoors.

My girlfriend wants to join me (jog with me and have her own headphones listening to the same audio).

How can we both pair our wireless headphones to my Iphone simultaneously so that we're listening to exactly the same thing?

(And these audio files are not available in some shared location like Spotify.)

(Also, we own a headphone splitter, but using wired headphones is inconvenient since cords make running difficult.)

Searching/opening filer from network location using terminal

I am creating .sh script that will open smb://location/foder. The location contains a lot of folders that are being constantly created, and every time when I navigate I need to open different folder. So far I am able to mount the smb share and it is listing all the folders, or if I specify the folder it is opening showing the folder content. I would like to be able to navigate to the smb://location and then to be asked for the folder name to open.

If i use "open smb://location" and then "search" option in Finder it takes about 3-4 minutes to open the folder content, so is not an option. If I use open "smb://location/folder" content of the folder is opened immediately. Also, using "&& find" with any attribute does not help.

Can this search be accomplished using .sh from terminal?

When setting up a new laptop, Setup Assistant doesn't see all the data

I'm trying to set up a new Retina MacBook Pro, which is running OS X 10.10, by transferring data from my old MacBook, which is running OS X 10.8.6, via Thunderbolt. My old laptop is in Target Disk Mode instead of using Migration Assistant due to the OS mismatch (the new machine wouldn't let me migrate with Migration Assistant). As far as I can tell, this all matches what Apple says should work. However, I have ~350 GB in my home folder, and my new laptop can only see ~50 GB. What's going on, and is there any way to fix it?

A few things:

  1. I tried copying my data once already, but almost nothing got copied (I think even less than the ~50 GB).

  2. I can't update my OS on my old laptop, because I don't have enough space.

  3. I could try restoring from a Time Machine backup – it seems to see everything that way – but I don't have the right cables, so (until I can get those) I'm looking for a laptop-to-laptop solution over Thunderbolt. (I have too much data to use Wi-Fi.)

Can't unlock the lock at the user tab when 'Local Network Users' is selected

At our office we use the mac mini server with the server.app software. To manage network accounts for all iMacs, this way we can all setup our own desktop environment to what you personally prefer. All this works fine, it even doesn't limit you to use only one specific iMac because it will sync your account to the server.

Unfortunately something has changed in the server.app, we now can't add new nor remove old user any more. When adding a new local network user at the "Users" tab with "Local Network Users" selected in the drop down list on top. Than there is a (new?) lock shown next to the add and remove (+ and -) sign, see the screen shot below.

When clicking on it a pop-up is shown, what asks for an administrator name and password. Credentials we don't have or never have registered. Also I noticed that the credentials have something to do with the LDAP (because of /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 no idea what it means), this is what we turned off... Have a look, comment if you need more information or specifications.
