I use my MacBook Pro on battery as much as possible, recharging when needed and once a month running it down to recalibrate etc.
However, when the battery is charged to 100% I unplug the charger from the electricity supply and the MacBook from the charger, but I wonder is the latter precaution necessary?
Is there any power exchange between MacBook and charger when the latter is unplugged?
It's not too important but would save me some scrambling around under my desk.
I'd like to run a Spotlight search to find all email messages that contain a specific attachment:
attachment names:screenshot
I tried the keyword "attachment names" in the Spotlight search window and in Finder's search field, but it returns no results. I suspect that this may be due to the space in the keyword "attachment names".
When I define the search criteria in Finder and pick Attachment names from the menu, it does return the correct results (see screenshot #2, I cut out the actual results).
Note: I tried leaving out the space, but that did not work. However, for another keyword, "Color space", using "colorspace" does work...
Note 2: Attachments are only one example, I'm looking for a solution that works for any keyword that contains of more than one word.

Powerpoint has a file open that I simply can't close. If I try to, I get a white screen - and the Powerpoint Title Line - but I cannot switch windows to a different pptx. I've tried saving it with a different name, closing and reopening Powerpoint, etc. - but when I do re-open the application, there is the wretched file.
I wanted to look around for the best of the best training for OSX Yosemite.
Im tired to use only 1% of the operating system and I wanted a deep know-how of every little tiny aspect of it (like holding option key when an alert prompt copying file, selecting like 'keep both' change to 'skip', where da f**k is this coming from I have no idea!).
So I wanted to know from you guys, the 'real deal', the final training, where I can find it.

I am trying to automate using Applescript uploading of files to a website. I have gotten to nearly the last step, but can't seem to get a Finder (file chooser) window to respond to scripts.
Here is what the site looks like (i can't give you the actual site, because it is a secure medical record).
The process to upload files is to hit "Add Images" which I can do in Apple/Javascript and it brings up a Finder (file chooser) window like this (again I can only show part because of privacy issues). There are standard "choose" and cancel" buttons on the bottom.
I can't find a way to get this Finder window to respond to Applescript. I have been trying things like:
tell application "System Events"
keystroke tab
end tell
and numerous others using Finder etc.
Any ideas on how to pick a file out of this window? Or get to this window? Or even find the properties of this window?

Recently, I have been trying to install WordGrinder on Yosemite. First I tried getting the latest tar packages from the developers' website and using them, but I ran into some library linking errors with lua and ncursesw. I tried using MacPorts because I assumed that it would do all of that for me, but it turns out that the problems I encountered first were just confusion left over from some earlier dirty MacPorts installs - I ran port selfupdate and those went away. After yet more difficulty with MacPorts, I decided to reconsider building from source. But now, when I use make, I get the following series of errors:

First, I have to use sudo to get the compiler to access the output file (I don't think I am supposed to have to do that, but not the main issue), and then, when I do, I run into the other one, about the "use of undeclared identifier 'KEY_EVENT'". I went over the makefile and the README.Unix several times, but I can't make head nor tail of it. I read in another, unrelated issue with installing WordGrinder on OS X that "building on Mac is a pig," and now I can't help but agree. What is going wrong, and how can I get WordGrinder to install properly on OS X?
I'm attempting to transfer photos to the computer to clear off space on the phone.
iPhone Settings -> General -> About reports 2,171 photos iTunes -> iPhone -> hover over Photos part of bar -> reports 2,217 photos
When attempting to transfer either Windows or Mac (Image Capture) -> reports 1,269 photos
Where are the other 800-900 photos? How do I insure that when I transfer and delete from iPhone for space, it'll only delete the ones that synced?
We use Gmail exclusively on an iPad. I want to either sync iOS Mail with Gmail or stop it from running (prefer the sync option). The iOS Mail on the doc just keeps adding mail. It never marks it read or deletes it in sync with Gmail. There are hundreds if not thousands of messages residing there that have been read and removed from Gmail.
I've just set up a new mini running OS X Yosemite/Server 4, and am using a Drobo 5D for file storage. All of the files on the Drobo have been copied from an old Xserve setup and various external drives and at least one other Mac's user folder.
I have my own admin account on the mini, then a small handful of users with local accounts on the mini (added through the Users panel) in a single Group which I've given access to the fileshare. Eventually there will be two Groups, one for administrative stuff that will be in a separate folder that the other users can't access. So, fairly simple.
Is there a proper way in Server to reset all ownership and permissions for the entire fileshare? I'd like to start with the cleanest slate possible. I'm comfortable with the usual simple Linux chmod/chown commands but completely unfamiliar with the ACL and umask and what not, but am not afraid to cut and paste into Terminal. :) Basically I'd want to be sure to wipe out any old ownerships or other stuff from other machines, and make sure everything is set up so we don't run into any problems down the line with new files or modifying old ones.

When I connect to a Mac with Screen Sharing enabled, I get a screen which asks for the Mac's username and password which I need to type in before I can see the actual desktop.
Is there any way to stop this so I do not need to login?

I have a terminal profile in which I changed the highlight color (let's say, to green). I didn't like it so I changed it back to blue. Now, whenever I am targeting the window and I highlight, the highlight color is blue, but if I click on another window (the terminal is now a background window), then the highlighted portion turns back to green.
How can I change the highlight color so that it stays the same as when the window is targeted?
I'm looking for a solution for a wall-mounted dock for an iPad mini which is being used to control different elements of a home entertainment system for a client.
So far, I think what I like best is this agility case from Otterbox paired with one or more of their various docks and mounts. It looks a lot like I could mount their wall mount right next to a power outlet and just use keep a regular adapter plugged in all the time, or maybe figure out how to mount their power dock to a wall.
Ideally, there would be no cord for children to steal to charge their own iOS devices.
What're your thoughts? Has anyone found a great solution?
I would like to share a family calendar between my wife (Android phone) and me (iPhone) using a Google calendar.
Currently I don't store my personal calendar in the cloud but only locally on the iPhone. The family calender shall be a second calendar. Only this second calendar shall be synced through the cloud.
Now when adding the Google account at the iPhone it asks which data I want to sync (mail, notes, calendar). If I choose 'calendar' here will it also transfer my local iPhone calendar to the cloud (to Google)? Or will it only add the new Google calendar to my iPhone and sync only this calendar with my iPhone?
How can I ensure that my local iPhone calendar stays local and ONLY the family calendar gets synced?
I am going to be installing a SSD into my 2011 15" Macbook Pro. After I install the SSD, how should I boot into OS X Recovery? Should I use Internet Recovery even though my Mac came with OS X 10.7; Now running 10.10.1? Or should I create an OS X Recovery USB Drive? Once I get into Recovery, I will use my Time Capsule restore to my SSD.

My mother's iPhone has collected over 1000 family pictures from the camera, emails and whatsapp. I am definitely NOT an Apple guy and I don't know where to even begin.
I'd like to save all the pictures on my computer and delete them off the phone. This will help me backup the pictures + create space on the iPhone.
What is the best, easiest and fastest way to do this without installing iTunes?
I do not have a MacBook or any laptop with Apple operating system on it. I do have an iPad though.
I have an iPad 1 with an almost fully updated iOS 8. I have an iOS update that is supposed to fix something about ringtones and security. I have the prompt that is asking me to download it, but when I do so, after hitting around 80- 85%, it says "Software update failed" and asks me to try it again.
I have been "Trying again" for the past hour, running this around 8 times, and I have pretty much given up. Memory is still plenty on the iPad 1, so I don't understand what's the issue here. I have the iPad plugged in to the wall, and I have really fast Wi-Fi in here.
I use an extension cable with my iPad2 to connect to an external amplifier with a built-in Dock. I have recently purchased an iPad3 (awaiting delivery) and was wondering if the cable will work with the updated iPad, or do I need to procure one specifically made for the iPad3.
The cable supports AV, so it's not just a matter of charging/syncing.

I have an iPad running iOS 8. I have several accounts attached to the Mail app. In the last two weeks however, the mail app has refused to stay up. When I open the Mail app, a blank screen shows up, with the reply, delete, trash icons in the upper right. The border dividers are visible (inbox/reading pane) but nothing else shows up. After a few seconds, the app will promptly crash. The same thing will repeat after opening it up again.
I have tried uninstalling all mail accounts and re-adding them back into the Mail setting, but that doesn't solve the issue. What it does is make the Mail app usable as long as I never shut off the iPad or kill the process. If I do any of those, the Mail app will act as I have stated above.
Another temp workaround is restarting the iPad, but this is even more tedious, because if I decided to open the Mail app then move to a different app, the Mail app will stop working.
This is getting very frustrating. The iPad is the first generation of the iPad 1 with 16GB, with plenty of memory left.
I'm dealing with my friend's Macbook White A1181. Original hard drive died a few weeks ago so we installed a brand new Samsung 840 EVO (256GB).
I've read several tutorials on how to reinstall OSX on a new fresh hard drive without luck. After the chime, I press alt/option key then the mouse pointer appears and that's all. I waited for ˜30 minutes and nothing happend.
Also tried with all those key combinations and nothing: http://ift.tt/1tHuOR8. If I didn't hit any key, I got a flashing folder icon with a question sign.

I have an iPhone 4 for like 3 months now. I had a few problems, but nothing important and my friend advised me to jailbreak it and resolve the problems this way. So I tried it but it was useless for me since i dont know anything about this stuff and I wanted to restore it completely to new software using iTunes, but it just keeps getting error 30xx (number slightly above 3000, dont remember exactly) and i tried to fix it, but it didnt work, so i tried another pc, but the same error occured, do you think this error is because of jalbroken device or is it just bad luck?
edit 1 - more info - so i tried connecting in DFU mode --> error 3014, tried another pc, still the same error
My OS version is 7.1.2, i tried it on windows 7 and 8.1
I tried the HOST file fix but still the error keeps occuring. Could downgrading (and then upgrading) software help?
Is there a way to make the finder show icons in newest to oldest order in a grid?
As it is when I pick "View->As Icons" and then "View->Arrange By->Date Modified" the finder displays them in long rows. The first row is "yesterday", the second row is items in the previous 7 days, then a row for 30 days, then a row for the previous year. There's 286 files in that row. Navigating by scrolling across the row is nearly useless. There's a "Show All" but that' also useless as it shows all the files a year old but in alphabetical order so for example if I want to find files from November last year I'm S.O.L.
Is there way to just display them in one long grid in newest to oldest order?
Some background:
I first got a Macbook Pro, 1, from my work. It was connected to the company AD. Since I had admin rights on this machine and didn't like having different AD policies forced upon me I reinstalled it to get a plain Mac OS X, free from any AD connections. 1 was then involved in an accident including water and broke. I then got a replacement Macbook, 2, which I reinstalled to get out of the AD like I did with 1. I then and transferred all data using Migration Assistant (the harddrive of 1 was not broken, however, the file system needed extensive repair).
So far, I didn't have any problems with my System Keychain. However, I then got rid of 2, after doing a Time Machine backup of it, and got a third Macbook, 3, which I wanted to do a clean install on.
Now when I try to read some wifi-passwords stored in the System keychain for 1 and 2 (by browsing to it on 1's old hard drive/the Time Machine backup of 2) on 3 I get an error message that the password I enter is incorrect. I am as sure as you could possibly be that I know the password to the account I had on 1 and 2 (I use the same password on 3) but obviously this is not the correct password to unlock the System keychain.
If I open my user keychain from 2 (from the Time Machine backup) I can unlock it using the password I used on my account on 2 (and 1 and 3). However, if I open the user keychain from 1's old harddrive I can't unlock it using the account password I used on 1. 1's water accident led to a lot of write errors on the harddrive and a lot of orphaned files but since all 1's keychains have worked on 2 I don't think the keychain files were affected.
So my question is something like: how does the OS unlock the System keychain after I login using my account password? Where does the OS find the password for the System keychain? In my user keychain? Apparantly, using the Migrations Assistant, iunlocking System is a non issue, while when I copy the keychain files manually something that is required is not transfered.
A final note: when I got 1 it probably came with some default password. It was 3 years ago so I don't remember. Can that be relevant here? Since I did a clean install (IIRC) I would be surprised but I guess there are different ways to reinstall a computer and I don't remember exactly how I did.
My clash of clans have been hacked, I got it back but the hacker can still use my account. He messes with my stuff like he demote my clan members and everything. What can I do to stop him. Please help

Somehow, I'm for a long time having issue with display color - it is strangely have more red color in it as I can see. As far as I understand - it is how transparency is displayed - upper menu bar is having this redness, or in preview app for example, when viewing pdf files - it is blinking between normal white color and red background transparent color as you keep scrolling. I tried to calibrate system color in system preferences, but without any positive result. If anyone know what is causing such a 'redness' of transparency in operation system - please, tell how to fix it, thx.
I have created by accident about 70 tags. by copying them into the finder tag window by accident.
I am using only 6 of them.
How can I delete all the 70 tags except those 6?
I tried to do it from finder but the process is so slow. I would choose some another method.
I have one Mac that is experiencing periods of sluggish wireless networking.
I am seeing system.log messages around these times of the following sort:

The count[xx] are clearly counting up each time the message is logged but the rest of the meaning escapes me. I'm not seeing anything odd or different on other Mac that are close by and Wireless Diagnostics shows nothing amiss.
Are these Airport driver DPC reinit reasons (5 in this case) documented anywhere so I can know what I might need to address or change on that Mac?
I am getting a customised MacBook Pro Retina and it will have a AC Cord for Britain, but I need one for EU/Germany.
So can I easily switch the AC Cord of my MagSafe 2 to a German one? Are these Cords somehow patented or normed, so I can use every cord on any adapter? 
Also: Where am I able to buy a Apple-original AC Cord (not the whole adapter)?

I have this problem that bothers me a few weeks now. In my Apple Mail on MacBook Pro I have 4 Mailboxes. One of them is Gmail synced via IMAP.
When I open the app everything works fine for about an hour. Then an exclamation mark next to my Gmail inbox appears saying "Too many simultaneous connections". This is non-sense because this is the only app accessing the e-mail (I know its creating more connections in background but...).
The problem is that after this hour the whole Mail app is kind of freezed. Sending e-mails stops at 80% and wont finish (even all other mailboxes) and app silently doesnt synchronize all mailboxes. From time to time the whole app crashes completely.
Do you have any ideas what could be wrong? Where to look for more details about this? Anyone with similar problem? Thank you!
I have both 'sort by' and 'arrange by' sorted as last opened and still finder is not showing the files and folders correctly. f.e.: I have some documents made in 2014 but finder shows those documents as if they were made in 2013. Even 'last opened' shows them in 2013! I am pretty sure that the dates are correct because those documents are from my bank and they didn't exists at all in 2013. When I put or open a file at a certain date in a sub-folder, why is the date last opened of the 'master-folder' not affected?
So I used to use CCC to clone my external drive to another external drive for a backup copy.
What I realized is that I want incremental backup that is versioned. So I can go back to a copy that is on a specific date in the past.
I don't want to use time machine for this because right now TM is already being used to backup my main drive to a time capsule.
As far as I know, I can't setup TM to backup my main drive to time capsule while choosing to backup an external drive to another location.
I guess I'm looking for 3rd party solution here?
Here's a list of docs with date stamps at the end of the filename.
Some contained typos (which I'm about to fix) causing them to be one character longer than the others. This extra character changed the sort order in a surprising way.
Why is some name 2015xxx before some name 2014xxxX (when it is after some name 2014xxx)?
I'd expect the length of the filename to make no difference, and for it to sort by first character then second character then third etc. I'd expect all the 2014s to be together, followed by all the 2015s, regardless of length.
This is Finder on Lion. The sort is the same whether it is set to "Name" or "None". Fixing the typos caused the order to behave as expected (2014s then 2015s).
Is this some kind of feature designed to make files like version 9 come before files like version 10?

I used yellow to color text on slide in keynote - it was there last night and when I reopened all yellow disappeared replaced by white text - no yellow on color wheel - any ideas on how to restore?
I am Robert and have been using macbook Pro for quite sometime. However the color display had been a problem from the time of purchase. I tried different ways to calibrate but to no avail. Finally tried Colorsync Utility option for repair and first aid. It indicated that the system has 4 bad profiles which the automatic first aid did not fix. The bad profiles are;

i have an iMac running Mavericks. I would like to install Pages 09 from a disc. When I try I just get error message. Is there a way of installing it and still using 09 with all its features?
It seems really hard to me to permanently delete all photos and videos from iPad. I tried different solutions, like:
While these solutions resulted in deleting some photo folders on iPad, some other folders (i.e. My Photo Stream) remained unchanged. Then I tried to remove them by selecting the photos on iPad but there were too many pictures. Finally the "Recently Deleted" folder on iPad remained full of photos! And iTunes shows there is a huge space on iPad still used by photos and videos.
So what's the easiest way to tell iPad I don't really want any more photos and videos on it?
In every single browser on every single OS (with a keyboard) I've used, backspace would go (history.)back to the previous visited page in that tab. For some reason this doesn't work for me on my new MacBook in Safari. Is this normal behaviour (seriously, why?) or can I somehow set it? It does work in Chrome and Firefox.
I'm new to Mac and still need to get used to the multi-finger swipe on the trackpad, but I am aware that is another way to do this. Just want my old trusted backspace behaviour back. ;)
Is there a way to duplicate a Safari (Safari 7 for OS X) tab and carry its browsing history to the duplicate? Like, when I do Cmd-l Cmd-Enter the copy has no history, as if I just pressed Cmd-t and pasted the URL of an existing tab.
Any suggestions on how to implement such a feature in case none exists will also be highly appreciated.
The Yosemite upgrade completely hosed Mail—it just won't talk to the Exchange server anymore.
"No problem," I think, "I'll just delete the account and start over as it's all on the server."
If I try and delete the account from Mail.app's preferences, it says "The Mail account “foo@bar.com” is shared by other applications on this Mac. You can remove this account in Internet Accounts."
Ok, so I click on Internet Accounts, it opens Preferences, and the Exchange account isn't there.
(Interestingly enough, I get the exact same problem when I try and remove the account via Contacts and Calendar's preferences—even when "Enable this account" is unchecked in all three.)
So how do I force Yosemite to delete all traces of an Exchange account?
I'm trying to create a calendar event and want to add a location for which there's no address. It's a run in the forest, and in the map application itself I can set the pin at the location I want (start area), but the address it tells is just the nearest. I want to have the location in the calendar to be the exact location, so I can find it in the forrest when I arrive. Is there I way to manually place the pin for the location in the calendar app?
How to check owner of an Appstore application? And licences used for downloading it.
My problem is the following:
I bought a new computer (MyComp) and connected my main account (Admin1) to apple-id (AppleID1), which I used on my work company computer (WorkComp).
With AppleID1 I installed Numbers Pages and Keynote on WorkComp few years ago using licence, which company gave me.
Now on MyComp system asked me to update these applications and I agreed.
Then I understood that now I probably using the same licence and there can be a problems later. So I need to rid of connection between this licence and applications on my computer (they suppose to be free anyway).
I created a new account on the MyComp (Admin2) and a new apple-id (AppleID2). But I saw that the applications are already installed and can be used by me. Nevertheless I tried to uninstall them and them download from Appstore again using AppleID2. And now I am not sure whether it worked or not, since everything looks exactly the same, and I know that applications on my computer can be installed using different AppleIDs, and I have no way to check to which appleID and to which licence they belong too.
Also a little bit different question - may be it is possible to still use AppleID1, but somehow clear the licence for the applications and download them as a private user, who just bought a computer and can get them for free?
