Is there any way to download a unsupported app from the Mac App Store? I know it will not run, but I need the actual file.

Can I restore items from a Mavericks Time Machine after upgrading to Yosemite?

If I upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, will I still be able to recover items from my Time Machine backup?

Is it safe to `chgrp` of home folder from 'staff'?

I want to be able to share items from my home folder with another testing user account on the same machine.

By default, the group of nearly all items in ~ is staff ... of which the only member is root.

Can I safely chgrp -R admin ~ and chmod -R g+rwx ~ ? Or will this have negative consequences?

(Many of the items I want to 'share' are in ~/Library so I cannot simply put stuff in /Users/Shared)

Why won't Safari save passwords to iCloud

I've been using iCloud passwords for a long time with no issues. This week, suddenly Safari won't remember any new passwords. It still auto-fills previously saved passwords though. In Safari preferences, the box is checked for auto-fill passwords. When I register for a new website, Safari generates a random password as usual, and it says it will remember it in the iCloud keychains, but it doesn't.

I've tried Keychain First Aid, in the Keychain Access app. No problems detected. In Keychain Access, it shows both iCloud and login keychains unlocked. I don't know what the problem could be.

iTunes is changing the number/order of tracks in an album when it loads into my iPod. I want the tracks to stay in order

iTunes changes the number (and therefore) the order of tracks in an album when make a new playlist. Therefore, I cannot listen to an album in the correct order. I want the tracks to stay in order when I create a new playlist. It is worse than shuffle because the actual number of the tracks gets changed, so I cannot tell what order the tracks should be in.

Wrong photo count

My iPad mini says I have 1701 photos. I deleted all except maybe a hundred. Ipad still says I have 1701 photos. Where they at. Tried everything. Checked forums and they have same problem. What good is ICloud if they want store data and photos because I need storage. But it says I have 5 Gigabytes free. Help

How do I delete a batch of old mail in iOS?

I am seeking help in deleting old mail from my iPad mini running IOS8.1.3.

There are messages back to 2013 (I bought the iPad in December 2012). There doesn't seem to be any way to delete all mail from before a given date, except one by one.

Mail is set up to use POP on that account (my ISP doesn't support IMAP) and set to never delete from server (so they are still there when I get a chance to use the Mac).

PS: It may not matter but on the Mac I use Thunderbird set up to leave mail on the server for 7 days

Make alias take icon of the .app it points to

1. I have a blah.app, and on desktop there is an alias to this app


2. I went to http://ift.tt/18wdFYy and replace the icon with my icon, same name


3. I went to blah.app/ and created a new folder next to the blah.app/Contents folder, this made the blah.app icon update to show mine however the icon of the alias file on desktop did not change.

Any ideas on why this is so? I know I can drag the icon over this alias file, but im trying to figure out whats going on here, why isn't taking my icon? :(

How do I run a binary program without showing the gear icon?

I created a automator workflow, add a Run Shell Script part and put these lines in:

/Users/xxx/Library/Android/sdk/tools/android avd

I saved it as an app and it works.

But I will always see a gear icon on the menu bar.

I tried to put a & or nohup, if so the program won't start.

Any ideas? The android I'm trying to execute is a shell script

Basically I need to understand which devices will support WiFi direct. Is this device specific or is this iOS specific?

MacBook Pro 13 - Connecting 2 external displays

Does anyone have some experience with adding 2 external displays to a MAcBook Pro 13? Im using 2 thunderbolt to DVI adapter cables and connecting one works with no problem but when I add the second to the Mac it doesn't work.

Only 1 external supported? Any tricks to get them both to work?

iPhone 5c uses same wires as iPhone 6

I'm not looking to charge iPhone 6. I'm looking to test an app for iPhone 6 device. I have iPhone 5 charger wire. On the opposite side of the charger side for the iPhone 5c, the wire has a little thing connected to it that connects to the bottom of iPhone 5c. Does that little thing part also connect to iPhone 6 bottom of phone?

Can a Macbook Pro work properly on integrated GPU only?

For a couple of week, I've been having kernel panics in my MacBook Pro (Early 2011, Yosemite), mostly doing zoom operations using QuickView and Preview.

A couple of times, it had problems rebooting, until finally it only rebooted to a grey screen.

I installed gfxCardStatus and to prevent it to switching to the discrete GPU at any time. And things seemed to go smoothly for a couple of days. But one day it had a kernel panic when waking up from sleep.

Booting in verbose mode showed no indications of what the problem could be, but I suspected it was a video card problems. I've known that this model of MBP had problems with defective AMD Radeon discrete GPU. I know Apples is repairing eligible machines, but I live in a country where perhaps that wouldn't be possible.

Decided to prevent the laptop from using the AMD GPU and use the integrated intel chip instead, I moved this drivers out of the /System/Library/Extensions/folder:

I just want my Mac to use the integrated Intel GPU and forget the discrete ADM Radeon card altogether. Other machines, including Apple machines, don't have a discrete GPU, just an integrated one, and they work fine for day-to-day, non-graphic-intensive tasks

My question:

• Is possible for this machine to work normally using only the integrated Intel GPU?


• If so, how?


• Are both my discrete GPU and my integrated GPU damaged?

Why does the Internet stop working after upgrade to iOS 8

So I upgraded my friends 1st generation iPad from iOS 4 to iOS 8.1 on my MacBook Pro. Now he's complaining that the Internet sometimes doesn't work and when it does it works extremely poorly and he's blaming me that it's due to the iOS 8 upgrade. Was the iOS 4 version 1st generation iPad not supposed to have been upgraded to iOS 8.1?

MacBook Air not Responding

My mac isn't responding. I can move the cursor around and click physically but can't exit or quit anything because it doesn't click on the actual computer. Turning off an on doesn't help and I can't restart because I can't press that button. Help?

Mail.app crashes constantly. I've tried everything.

Apple Mail crashes for me nonstop. Sometimes immediately after opening, and sometimes everything is fine until I add an attachment to an email or something. Somedays it's totally useless and sometimes I can go a week without crashing.

Today is totally useless. I've gone through the mail profile deletion and reinstall, deleting the cache, uninstalling and reinstalling OS etc. Can someone help me diagnose based on this reporting? Also, a hundred million hugs to the solver. This is killing me.

Can I connect to wifi but still use cellular?

I would like to be able to connect to my cars dashcam via wifi while in the car but still be able to use my iPhone's cellular connection.

The way the dashcam works, it appears as a wifi access point so the phone tries to connect to the Internet through it. How can I be connected to the access point while still using my phones cellular?

How to paste Chinese/Unicode characters to Terminal?

I'm trying to paste some Chinese: 你好世界 to my Terminal, but instead I've got ^L or some other weird characters.

The same happens for other unicode characters (such as £āēīōūśṣṭēīōū) when pasting or pressing Option+e, then a for á, e for é, i for í and similar, then I've got C!C)C- instead.

In Terminal Settings, I've got Character encoding set to Unicode (UTF-8) (Settings/Profiles/Advanced) and in Encodings tab I've UTF-8 enabled.

I've LANG=C, however setting it to LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 doesn't help.

However it works when I run echo:

Sharing Dropbox folder between OSX and Ubuntu

I've got a MacBook Pro in dual boot MacOSX + Ubuntu. I'm sharing a home partition between the two, with HFS+ filesystem, and a Data partition, also in HFS+.

In the Data partition I placed my Dropbox folder, which I'm hoping to share between the two, since it's around 30 GB. However, every time I change OS, Dropbox restarts syncing everything from scratch, which takes a good day or so.

Is this normal, and if so, is there a way around this that would allow me to share the Dropbox folder between the two OSs?

Caching Server OS X Port

When you run sudo fullstatus caching, it lists all the relevant data for how the caching works on the server. There is one particular line that shows what port the caching server is using.

Does this port need to be open and accessible in order for caching to work properly? For example, does this port need to be forwarded/opened since we are NAT'ed in order for caching to work (because caching doesn't seem to be working right now even though it says that it is running)?

Safari 8: Delete key no longer deletes text inside the form fields

Since I upgraded to Yosemite and Safari 8 I have to press Ctrl+Delete or Shift+Delete to delete the text I typed in web forms. Nothing happens if I press Delete key by itself.

Is this just me, or someone else experiencing the same issue? Is there a fix?

I am using MBP's built-in keyboard.

Why don't images in iCloud appear as available in iMovie on IOS?

I want to create a full video on IOS device but use a predetermined asset for an intro screen. I have added a JPEG to my iCloud account formatted to video screen size. I then created a movie project on my phone (6 plus) and clicked "add media " icon, then browse to iCloud and I can see the file, but it isn't selectable. So what am I missing? Is it a file format issue?

Course of action to clean up RAM on sluggish mac

(This drops to 20-300 MB once Chrome is running!) I know I could try a clean install, maybe that would take me less time than a cleanup. Would adding RAM to 2009 imac improve performance

Since I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, my 24 inch 2009 2.93 Ghz imac has been quite slow. It's slow to open up programs and slow in general.

Currently the imac only has the 4Gb of RAM that came as standard. Would upgrading to 8Gb be worth it? I can't afford a new machine at the moment.

PS. I regret (in some ways) not remaining on SL but I needed 10.9 to use an application.

How do I create a symlink to MVim configuration files?

I want to store my configuration files in source control and symlink them so they will be used by MacVim. Looking at :scriptnames I see vimrc and gvimrc being used in:

/Applications/http://ift.tt/1tMF7Ub

My source controlled vim files are located in:

~/Programming/Personal (both gvim and vimrc are here)

How do I setup the symlink? Do I need to delete the existing gvim and vimrc files located in /Applications?

Stuck on blue screen after running "rm *" in /

I accidentally executed rm * on / and since then I am unable to see my desktop. All I see is a blue screen with spinning gear.

Irony is I somehow missed my OS and other CDs too that came with my Mac. I followed this article on starting up in safe mode but it shows progress bar for long time and then again get stuck to blue screen

I can't get Into safe mode either, so how can I get back to a working system?

PS: I also wonder whether I be able to get my desktop settings again without compromising all settings? I am specially concerned with software installed via home brew, Databases etc. Is it possible to to restore or copy deleted files by some kind of repair via CD?. How to record a screen film of an iPad?

Using Find in Text Wrangler (Mac) requires 2 extra steps to work sometimes - why?

When I've got a css or php file opened with Text Wrangler and I do a 'find' for a term that I know is on the page, I oftentimes have to click my mouse and move the scroller thing (located on the right) and click inside the Text Wrangler file that's opened, usually some blank space up top, in order for the finder to do its job.

'Not found' is what happens if I don't do this.

Click the scroll button to reposition the cursor any place random on the page, and then I'll be able to locate what I was looking for.

I don't have grep box ticked.

It's just a plain old search for a term.

When I search for a term while using Text Edit, I never have to do this.

Why?

I figured that it might be a bad PMBR. From all accounts, this is just an MBR with a non-bootable partition in it. I created an HFS disk on a USB stick, and copied the MBR (dd if=/dev/disk7 count=1 of=/dev/disk6) to the ailing disk.

I used R-Studio to scan the disk. R-Studio finds files and directories and such.

Ran TestDisk (separate command line disk utility) It's numbers agreed with GPT's.

I then used dd to make a backup of the first 34 blocks of the disk, and used gpt to destroy and recreate the partition table.

Where does a pkg installer install things?

I created a *.pkg installer for a command line tool following this guide: http://ift.tt/1C3XP3F.

After running the installer, and selecting "Install for all users", I can't find where my installed files are.

The installer says the setup will take 57.9MB and the copying section takes quite some seconds, so I assume files are actually being copied and there is not an issue with my installer.

Where did those files went? A find / didn't reveal anything.

Require password icloud after login

I don't know why when I log in Mac OS (Yosemite), the system requires me about the password of icloud. I type my password but it's not turned off.

I need to create a .css file on my Mac. I created it with TextEdit. How do I now save it with a .css extension? It seems that very single File Format it offers will give it a different extension (rtf, html, odf, docx, xml, doc)?!

Numbers - date cell set to last day of the month

I have a Numbers sheet that I use to forecast the monthly interest payments on my mortgage and it's working well. The only issue is that the date cells auto-sets to the first day of the month.

Is there any way that I can make a cell automatically set to the last day in the month?

My usage for cellular data for apps is disabled!

Am having an iPhone 4s (version ios7) and when I turn off the cellular data for specific app and then when I close my settings and then get back to settings that app uses cellular data automatically. I didn't switch on the use cellular data for that app but it becomes green when I close and open settings>cellular>use cellular data for. Help me with this! How to switch off the cellular data usage for an app without letting that switch on again after closing settings and opening it again.

How to delete photos only from one device?

As I have limited storage on my iPhone, can I delete photos from my iPhone and they will still remain on the iCloud? Or can they be accessed on my iPad which has more storage?

I think when I have deleted a picture on any device, they delete from the iPad as well (presumably through the iCloud).

I click on the button. Result: the whole screen goes gray, and all links are de-activated, like a "lightbox" effect, and nothing else?!

Notifications when running full screen

I am wondering if anyone can help.

I currently run XBMC/Kodi which runs in Fullscreen so OSX notifications do not display on top. When the application is in windowed mode, notifications display as normal. I have looked through the settings and their seems to be no way to change this behavior.

Is anyone aware of a script/plugin/hack that will achieve my goal?

Youtube on Safari won't zoom enough

I'm on youtube on Safari on my Mac. I'm on "View Actual Size", and the browser is taking up my entire screen, and yet, for some bizarre reason, the width of the content is exceeding the width of my screen, so that I constantly have to scroll back and forth to see all the content.

Safari allows me shrink the content through "Zoom out", and this reduces the problem somewhat. But after 3 clicks on "Zoom out", the feature becomes disabled, and I cannot Zoom out anymore, and the width of the content still exceeds the width of the screen?! Every other browser first of all doesn't have this problem to begin with, and secondly, let's me zoom out as much as I want!

And yet another problem: related videos shows only a thumbnail -- no text! Again, only on Safari?!

Going into theater mode solves the problem -- but I don't like theater mode -- I now have to scroll down every time I want to see related videos, a major inconvenience.

I've been using youtube for about a decade, and this is the first time I've ever had any such silly issues with it, all thanks to Safari. :(

Script to delete all groups in contacts with wildcard

I have about 2000 empty contact groups, which all start with _ModGrp and have some numbering scheme after that in the name. I would therefore like to delete all groups starting with _ModGrp

I have found several scripts which are supposed to perform a very similar function, however without the wild card. The group name is quite long after the starting _ModGrp however ends with Das Örtliche Merkzettel, the iOS app which created the problem. I have reported the iOS app to apple and the bug was fixed, except I still have 2000+ empty groups.

FileVault optimizing... 43 days remaining

My FileVault says that I have to wait for 43 days for it to finish optimizing something. As soon as I launch any application it stops working. So the only time that I can dedicate for the FileVault to finish optimizing is 8-12 hours of night which makes 43 days in reality 86 days. The readings are always jumping, one time you might see 3532 days remaining but never goes below 20 days.

Maybe someone has stumbled upon this problem previously? How to speed things up, I can't wait for 3532 days for the optimization to complete that looks nonsense...
