Is there any way to have two applications visible at the same time, with one application not in use overlapping the other

For example:

Notice how Sublime Text 2 (the application on the right) is visible and I can see chrome in the background. This is expected behaviour as I have Sublime Text 2 open and in use.

But then when I swap back to Chrome, the app disappears in the background, because chrome is now in use (which I guess is expected behaviour).

Is there any way so that when I swap back to Chrome, I can see other applications on top of it? In other words, can I use Chrome and look at other applications on top of it?

Obviously I could do something side by side, but my real problem involves an application that I maximise.

Inbox by Gmail - making a small application

Now, I know some of us hate Google, but they have come up with a really good service at Inbox. I find it very easy to manage email that way and have been using it on my Windows PC as a chrome application for years now.

Recently, I bought a MacBook Pro and just plain hate the default mail application they have installed. Also, since I own an Android phone and I use the Inbox Android Application there, it's really hard to see what I did in inbox reflected on Mail (see footnote)

My problem is that when I install the Inbox chrome extension, it is little more that a glorified shortcut. On my Windows PC, I used to select 'Open as a separate Window' and I didn't need to use Chrome at all. However, on the Mac there is no such option and it opens Chrome every time I open Inbox (on top of that I cannot pin the application to the Dock like I used to be able to with the Taskbar). So the question is whether I can make a small application that I can pin to the Dock, which opens a fullscreen window showing the contents of the Inbox website.

I am a Mac newbie so please forgive me for any noobie things I said. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

(footnote) For example, you can mark an email as 'Done' in Inbox. Now I don't know where that email disappears on my Mac.

How do I find out what apps are in iTunes and not on my iPhone, and vice versa?

• what apps are on my iPhone that are not in my iTunes Library

Is there any way (either in Windows or using third-party software) to find out this information?

Im trying to find an app that will allow me to listen to my phone's microphone remotely over 3G. Like a walkie talkie but you press to listen, rather than press to talk. It needs to run ios and android. Does such an app exist?

Why don't I see a path to etags in PATH when running Emacs from http://ift.tt/ocMo9S from the OS X dock?

If I start Emacs from the dock, then I don't see in PATH

If I use the script described at "http://ift.tt/1AHSWfO" then I do see the above entries in PATH. But even in this case, "/usr/bin" comes first in PATH. To use the etags found in "/Applications/http://ift.tt/1FkJ36W" I have to give it precedence in some manner. I typically want to run etags in a shell script that is started in the Emacs shell buffer.

Why don't I see these path entries when I start Emacs from the OS X dock (I'm using OS X Yosemite)?

Not Loading Clash of Clans [on hold]

I went to log on to coc and it kept going to the loading screen over and over I tried deleting it and get it again and didn't work and turned my Ipad off and back on still doesn't work?

Added memory does nothing to performance.

IMac, 27" screen. Came with 4 gig of memory. I never used all 4 gig until I started using IMovie. Bought 8 gig extra memory, now have total of 12 gig. Nothing speed-ed up at all. When monitoring the memory, it seems that I'm always using over 8 gig and can only clean up the memory to about 6 gig. How did I ever get by with 4 gig? Nothing adds up.

Difference between unlisted iPhone 5s models?

Apple only officially lists a handful of iPhone 5s models, and yet there are in fact many more. Are there any differences between all these models for different carriers when they're using the type of same network? Specifically, I'm interested in whether an unlocked ME311LL is functionally equivalent to the ME329LL or A1533 GSM model (i.e., does it support the same LTE bands?).

I don't seem to find Chrome Extension's Setting Files/Databases in OSX, it is not in the extension folder aka "~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions"

Security camera app

I have been looking for a security camera app that can record videos upon motion and save them to my camera roll, but unfortunately I've only found some that take photos and /or serve as an ip cam for free.

I have found one for Mac however called iSentry which is free and does exactly what I need it to, but I only need it when I don't need my mac and I'm out of my room. What I need is an app that I can leave running on my iPod touch while I'm away with my mac.

Does anyone out here know of a free/cheap option to record video upon motion for iDevice? Because I cannot use livestream and photos isn't enough for me. Thanks in advance.

Low budget: Wait for a MacBook Pro or get a MacBook Air? [on hold]

I’m willing to buy a MacBook. I’d use it to code and minor Photoshop and video edit stuff. I live in Brazil - Macs are really expensive here.

I found some deals and I can get a 13” Macbook Air 1.4GHz i5 4GB Ram 128GB SSD for R$ 3250 - ~1200 dollars. However, I’m afraid of it's performance.

I can get a Retina 13" MacBook Pro i5 2.6GHz/8GB/128GB SSD for R$ 4300. That’s a huge difference, but If it’s worth I’m willing to save money and buy it. What are your suggestions? I’d like to hear from who’s used both of them!

Retina Macbook Pro doesn't hibernate

I have bought a 13 Retina Macbook Pro -my first Mac, just a couple of days ago and I found something odd.

Apple claims that after an hour or so of sleep, the Mac should go to deep sleep -AKA hibernation. Well, yesterday night I closed the lid and the Mac entered sleep mode. The expected behaviour according to Apple is that when I wake up in the morning, the Mac would turn on and load the RAM image from disk back to the main memory, taking many seconds to wake up. Instead, it woke up immediately -like if it never entered hibernation.

1) Why doesn't my MBP do what Apple claim it should do when "sleeping"?

2) I'd like to have the hibernation mode active. I love that my computer turns on sooo quickly but if I'm not going to use it for many hours, I'd prefer to save battery with a (slightly slower) boot.

I already tried to change the standbydelay and the autopoweroffdelay to little numbers like 1 minute, 2 minutes, 0 minutes, 120 seconds, 60 seconds (standbydelay uses seconds, autopoweroffdelay minutes according to pmset man).

I don't have any USB connected, I turned off iCloud and Google sync.

I saw the pmset -g assertions to see if there's some daemon or app or service preventing the deep sleep. I changed the hibernatemode from 3 to 25, and back to 3.

And yes, I read the pmset man and tried virtually everything I read on the web.

The Mac keeps entering sleep but never deep sleep/hibernation.

I tested everything. I'd like to have more control (or SOME control) over when and how MY computer goes to sleep/hibernate. Thanks in advance!!

Resizing Partitions

I cannot resize the HD of a new Mac Mini. The Mac HD shows 700+ GB on one partition with Yosemite on it and another partition of 200+ GB named "Free Space" and I cannot figure out how it got there

iSpazz 64-bit problem?

So there is this iTunes Plugin I wanna install called iSpazz that makes your keyboard backlight flash to the music from iTunes I dragged the file that I downloaded into the iTunes plugin folder and iTunes doesn't load up because the plugin is designated for 32-bit versions of iTunes so I right click on the iTunes app and set it so that it runs on 32-bit mode. It doesn't let me open iTunes and gives me this message please help me I've been struggling with this for a while.

Why is there a pause before the light comes on/mac starts charging when plugging in?

My mental model of a charger is that you plug it in and electricity fires out of it like a hose whether you like it or not. When I plug in my macbook charger, it often takes a few seconds before the light comes on and the menu bar icon says charging.

Time Machine is skipping files and folders. How to fix?

Running OS X 10.10.2 on a Early 2009 Mac Pro. System installed on a 256 GB solid state drive. 10 GB of memory.

I'm having a problem with Time Machine where it's not backing up some of my files and folders. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it, but it includes very, very important things like the parent directory for projects I'm working on, arbitrary hash directories in some git repositories, an assortment of emails, Messages attachments, random preferences files, and somehow the entire contents of my Pictures folder. And probably more -- I haven't checked everything.

I've recently forced Time Machine to do a full traversal when it made a recent backup (and confirmed that it was a full traversal by looking at backupd's output in Console.app), but these files are still missing.

I also tried going into one of the directories that wasn't being backed up and running:

find . -exec touch {} \;

to make every file appear to be recently modified, and then told Time Machine to make a new backup, but it still skipped them.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to fix Time Machine? I just want it to do a full backup, not skipping anything.

As a last ditch effort I could blow away my Time Machine drive and start from scratch, but I really, really don't want to do that because it contains several months worth of backups, and I occasionally do need to go back and get older versions of files.

Edit:

I haven't found a solution to this particular issue, but I have decided to discontinue using Time Machine for backups as I can no longer rely on it. I've decided to give ChronoSync a try since it seems pretty comparable.

Application for manage and sync PDF collection

Unfortunately is not possible synch the PDFs files using iBook, so i'm looking for an alternative. I have a huge collection of PDF file and i work with different computers.

I'm looking for an application that can takes care of all my PDFs and generate an archive that can be put on Dropbox / iCloud Drive.

Sometink like Calibre but possibly with a better UX. It shouldn't be necessarely free.

System Fonts Dont Display In Pages 5.5

As much as I hate the new Pages, I use it because it was a resource all my devices could update/re-upload before Microsoft Office came out on iOS devices. However, there are some fonts missing that are clearly OS installed. Furthermore, it's valid, in my Font Book and in my System > Library > Fonts folder. I use it in Xcode and am trying to create a PDF in Pages to include in my application, so naturally, keeping the same font would be fluid and professional. however, it's not displaying as an option to choose and there is no preferences settings for fonts and i've tried repairing disk as a just-in-case measure. All my custom installed fonts display as an option to choose in pages but not select system fonts. this is not pages in iCloud Any suggestions?

EDIT: Not that it would matter, because it's more than this one specific font, but the font in question is 'Heiti TC Light' [an OS installed Font]. I just know i'll get a comment asking this. But again, it's more than this one

In iOS 8 Safari, when it autocompletes a url one begins to type, it would be useful if we could move the cursor to the end of the autocompleted url so we can append more path and file info.

Why does CMD+1 work if using my top row numkeys, but not my right-side NumPad? Mac

I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts, like CMDkey + 1. However, that 1 has to be from my top row numeric keys. If I try using CMDkey plus a number from the NumPad on the right side of my keyboard - this fails. Even though when I plainly type numbers, my NumPad will type the number just like my top row numeric keys.

Why does CMD+1 work if using my top row numkeys, but not my right-side NumPad?

MacBook Air USB-C to USB-A

I am looking to buy the MacBook Air 2015 when it comes out and if the rumors are correct then it should come with USB-C. The only issue is (as with all of us) is I only have USB-A Memory sticks. Since USB-C is new it will be hard to get converters.

Time Machine backup extremely slow after upgrade to Yosemite

I recently updated my MacBookPro from Mavericks to Yosemite and found that Time Machine backup speed has really slowed down.

I realized the amount of new/changed files jumped quite a bit after the upgrade, so I expect the first backup to take a while. However, the backup speed seem unusually slow.

I let it run overnight and in 12 hours it copied 18GB out of 500GB, for an effective transfer rate of about 0.025 GB/min. At this rate it will take something like 14 days to complete.

For comparison, and to make sure the external drive and USB ports were basically happy, I copied a 4GB file over to the external drive manually and it measured at 8.5 GB/min (very fast).

Has anyone else seen this and/or have any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Can I use the same bootable drive for all models?

I currently have a Late 2010 MacBook Air and looking to get the new Air when it comes out later this year. My question is, I have just made a bootable USB installer (by using createinstallmedia by downloading Yosemite from the app store) however I am not sure if I can use this to install Yosemite on the MacBook Air 2015 without losing some features i.e. Hand-off is not available on the 2010 version.

So could I use a OS X 10.10.3 installer from a MacBook Air 2010 and use it to install Yosemite on the MacBook Air 2015 with all the features enabled?

Mac to HIteker Tv through HDMI

Recently we have moved my HDMI cable to use on a different TV and when I brought it back to my room and used it to connect my MacBook Pro to my Hiteker TV, my mac recognizes the TV but the Tv doesn't recognize the Mac, it says no signal. I've tried putting the cable in the other HDMI port and the same thing happened. I have also unplugged it while both are on. Please help.

THE PROBLEMS I HAVE INCURRED :

I Followed all the instructions above renaming the HID LED... file to a simple HID .. problem is when i run the automator program as indicated above i get the reply xxxxx is a directory ... i cannot get around this , i have tried extracting the file within the HID LED test tool folder and then executing the automator with that file name but the exact same thing happens ....

when i attempt to open the project.pbxproj file in Terminal i get the response :

When in Fullscreen OSX Yosemite won't hide the dock

I dont have "auto hide" enable for dock. but in all previous version dock will hide if I enter in full screen mode for vlc player or for chrome. Now its no longer the case. If I enbale "auto hide" then its hide it but that's not what I am looking for as I like to see dock all the time except full screen mode.

Is it OK to rename an application?

Can't force quit frozen iTunes in OS X Yosemite

I have OS X Yosemite. Was adding a podcast to an older nano, and iTunes crashed. It's still running, but when I try it won't force quit. I tried to restart or shut down, but the system wants me to force quit Itunes, but it won't. Any suggestions?

OSX Server 3.2.2 and Profile Manager

I recently have been tasked with taking over a work load left behind from an employee that left my workplace.

I am setting up a new OSX Server 3.2.2 with Profile Manager to control three different Computer Labs with 15 or so machines in each lab.

Currently they are set up on an old server running with Workgroup Manager. I have been able to set up the new server and have it attached to our Active Directory.

The lab machines can now see and connect to the new server. The users and groups are pulled over as the should be. My questions are...

In the old environment when a user logs in the apple doc is filled with the programs and folders the users would need like the Adobe Creative Suite and of course their network home folders. The network home folders are showing just fine. How/where do I set what is loaded on the doc? I've tried to change this in Profile Manager thru the individual users and also by groups but I have not seen any changes I've logged out and restarted the machines and logged in a student and admin and never see anything changed.

Also when the users log off I was asked to have something happen that doesn't happen in the older environment. The machines reset, meaning all the settings and files saved to the desktop by the user are removed competely, so the machine is fresh the next time they are logged in. I know this is something possible with a guest account but the users must be able to log in themselves.

Before I posted here I have searched all over the web for answers the past week and I've read tons of documentation. I am left with nothing from the past admin and this is all new to me. I remember how helpful and knowledgable everyone here is from years back in my old job, if anyone could at least lead me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Stop Firefox from asking me about blocking Flash

Lately it seems like there's a new "critical" update to Flash every week or so. And every single time this happens Firefox begins prompting me to Allow or Disallow flash on every single website I visit which uses it. Until in frustration I give in and update Flash.

The thing is, I don't necessarily want to update flash. I also don't want to continually click "Allow" on a multitude of websites.

Is there a global configuration setting that either says "Allow Flash forever on all websites" or "Stop asking me I don't care, just leave me alone already Firefox"

Note: Flash is already set to "Always Activate" so that doesn't work. This is something new that's just begun happening and it happens across all platforms I use firefox on - Linux, OS X and Windows.

Yosemite maximize button fill width and height, not go fullscreen, as default. No extra keys

I've been dealing with this for a while and I just can't take it anymore. I want to set the default maximize button to fill the width and height of the screen without any extra shortcut keys. The way it does in windows and linux. Not go fullscreen.

This worked perfectly fine in Mavericks with right zoom, but that hasn't been released for yosemite and everyone on all the forums is saying "oh you don't need it anymore" and pointing to articles about how you just need to press the option key, or shift+option. But that's not what I want. I move back and forth across windows, linux and mac and only macs cause this kind of problem for me. The others in my office want to know what I come up with because they don't like the behaviour either.

Please save me from apple's terrible UI policy decisions. (Don't even get me started on why command+option+v is a terrible alternative to cut and paste)

Is it okay to install a second RAM chip?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with a recently replaced logic board and SSD upgrade. I haven't yet upgraded the RAM.

Currently, RAM is 4GB, one slot, Apple RAM (whichever manufacturer they use). I am thinking of buying some Crucial RAM to bump it to 8GB. Would it be better if I did 2x4GB from Crucial and put them both in the slots available, or could I get just one Crucial 4GB RAM chip and install it in the empty slot? Would there be any advantages/disadvantages to either?

Dual-Monitor: Second monitor black after sleep mode

I'm using two Elgato Thunderbolt Docks on my MacBook Pro Mid-2012. I connected two displays to them: One HDMI display on each of them. Both are LG-Displays, one a 16:9 and one a 21:9 display.

This configuration works fine - at least sometimes. If it works it works the whole day. If I then put my MacBook into sleep mode and wake it up again some time later, I have two possible results:

• Both monitors are picked up just fine and everything works (60% of the time)


• Both monitors are recognized, only one (the first connected) actually shows a picture, the second one then has no picture and goes to sleep

I have no consistent behaviour here because I can try whatever I want, PRAM-resets, reboots, deleting display settings etc., I cannot force the second monitor to work, too. It randomly works at some point.

What can I do to fix this or at least force the second monitor to work, too?

Remember: OS X recognizes both monitors with their correct color profile and resolution and often, it DOES work (I use the MacBook in clamshell).

I'm not able to remotely connect with other Macs using Screen Sharing by default VNC feature

I've a MBP with OS X Yosemite & I want to remotely connect with other Macs over internet, primarily for troubleshooting purpose. I currently use TeamViewer but I'm not satisfies with it.

Finnish Spell Checker for System of OS X?

I know this discussion about spell checkers for Pages, here. However, you cannot use its solution in system and/or program independently. I am searching for the files ending with .aff or .dic. My current OS X is Yosemite 10.10.2.

The manual of OS X says that in Settings > Keyboard > Spelling > Set up ...

To add an additional spelling dictionary, copy the dictionary files (.aff and .dic to the Spelling folder in your Library folder.

Is there any standard dictionary for Finnish?

A few years ago, I managed to get gcc 4.7 working, after building from source, and replacing the assembler in /usr/bin/as with the one from gcc. But that endeavour took some days, and I'm not sure if it works with the current OSX and Xcode tools versions. I suspect this one has similar problems, either trying to use the same assembler as the one came with Xcode, and has a misunderstanding with it, or trying to use it's own assembler, which doesn't know about AVX . I'm not sure yet what exactly is the problem, my next hope ( before spending a few days hacking it to use a useful assembler ) is to try the brew GCC package.

Or, if anyone knows an easy way to bring GCC with AVX to life on mac OS X, I'm happy to hear about it. Note: clang I can already use, this question is specifically about GCC

Only my cable can recharge my iPhone

My iPhone cable is the only one that can recharge my iPhone 5. I have tested around 5 other iPhone 5/6 cables and none of them work. I am apprehensive of either losing my cable or breaking it.

The cable also doesn't always recharge everyone else's iPhone. But when it does, it's because it has been plugged using the "right" side as only one side works. That behavior applies to my iPhone as well.

Right now my survivor cable has the same value as my phone. One can't go without the other. This is both magic and exasperating.

How to tell what program is launching softwareupdated?

My Macbook was running really slow after opening it up and so I opened Activity Monitor and saw one process called softwareupdated that was not responding. It didn't say it was using any CPU but my laptop was crawling. I force quit it but then it restarted again. So I looked it up online and saw that App Store uses it (and maybe others). So I opened App Store and ran update. It seemed to use the process as it showed 104% CPU. Then when it was done it went back to 0 CPU. Still it showed in red that it was not responding.

How do I know what process is calling this? How do I prevent it from being called?
