Can all file on AirPort extreme be encrypted with FileVault?

I have a Macbook Pro (Mac OS 10.10.2, late 2013 model) and am considering to buy an AirPort Extreme 2TB. I want to use it not only for TimeCapsule backups, but also as a general-purpose storage disk (as discussed here Can I use a Time Capsule as an all-purpose storage disk?).

Can the data, which I save on AirPort Extreme not in the context of TimeCapsule, be encrypted with FileVault?

My question is not if TimeCapsule-backupped data can be encrypted - as I understand this is possible - but my question is if the other data, put onto AirPort Extreme outside of the TimeCapsule functionality, can be encrypted with FileVault?

I.e. can the entire AirPort Extreme be encrypted with FileVault?

How do I sync tags between two Macs using Google Drive?

I have two Macs, and I use Google Drive to sync my data. I created tags in Finder on one Mac for some of the files and directories in Drive, and they don't appear on the other one.

Is this possible? Or are tags restricted to the system they live on and not synced along with the files they apply to?

In case it matters, I don't use iCloud sync, and I'm not willing to turn it on.

How to automate a simple mouse action?

When I'm writing notes in Evernote, I constantly need to change the font of blocks of text to Courier New. What I usually do is select the text, click on Fonts dropdown and select Courier New. I have to do this all the time so it's kind of a bore.

I want to automate this so that all I need is to select the text and press a key combination to change the font.

What are my options? (Any in-built way or third party apps)

Syncing ipod to itunes

I have an iPod that has been in use for some time.

I now want to sync it to iTunes on my macbook pro so I can copy some songs from the macbook to the iPod.

when I connect the iPod to the macbook it comes up saying


welcome to your new iPod

The only options are to set up as a new iPod or restore from a backup, neither of which are what I am trying to do.

is there are way to get this to work the way I am wanting? or is there an alternative way to get songs into the music section on the iPod without syncing with the mac?

How can I run Windows Software .exe on a PowerBook G4?

I have an old PowerBook G4 12" with 1,25 GHz and 786 MB RAM, actually MacOS X 10.4.11 is installed.

I'd like to give it to my son, but he likes (among others) to use learning games/software, which are made for Windows (.exe).

What is the best way to run Windows Software on this old Mac?

Do I need to install Windows in a VM,

or is there something like WINE which lets me install the .exe directly?

(I had also considered to install Linux on the machine (e. g. MintPPC http://mintppC.org/ ), to have a more recent OS, if that would help or make any difference...)

I already found the PowerPC section in the WINE project, see PowerPC Mac, but I don't fully understand which options do exist in my case and which should be the best one.

They write:

Older Macs using PowerPC processors are incompatible with code compiled for x86 (Intel and AMD) processors, unless the code is run under CPU emulation. Wine Is Not a (CPU) Emulator, nor does it include one.

So if I understand correctly, WINE will not work on a PowerPC Mac as it does on an INTEL Mac and I could use it only in combination with a CPU emulation like Q?!

Furthermore there seems to be Q or Qemu, which seems to emulate a guest PC and therefore needs an installation/license for Windows (and maybe more ressources?)

Cannot enable double-tap and drag

I had to send my Retina MBP in to Apple for a keyboard repair, and when I got it back it seems all of my system preferences were reset to system defaults. I've been slowly working my way through getting them back where they should be, but one that is refusing to re-set is enabling double-tap and drag.

To clarify, this is not a duplicate of this question; I'm well aware of how to enable it normally, and have attempted this procedure. The box was already checked when I got my laptop back, and no combination of checking, unchecking, or changing the drag lock options in the drop down appears to be working.

My best guess is that perhaps there's some terminal command that can perhaps force it to update the setting, but I'm not sure beyond that. Any ideas?

I recently bought a 5th generation iPod touch, but was dismayed to learn that I can't use Siri to play music in my car because it doesn't work offline. Is there a voice control app that I can use to choose songs without a wifi connection?

How do I get an old iOS 4.1 iPhone 3GS to sync with my iCloud contacts on my OS X 10.7.5 Mac?

I have an iPhone 3GS that is unlocked and jailbroken. It is running iOS 4.1. I cannot update because that will undo the unlock mechanism.

I was originally on an iPhone 4S. It got bricked somehow, so I pulled out my old iPhone 3GS. I had already migrated completely to iCloud for my contacts; I run 10.7.5 on my Mac and was using iCloud to sync all of our Apple devices.

With iOS 4.1, it doesn't support iCloud, but I can't get it to sync my contacts manually. I was hoping that when I connected my iPhone to iTunes, that by clicking the 'Sync Contacts' under 'Info', it would just pick up all the iCloud contacts that are stored locally on my Mac and treat them as regular contacts.

Apparently it doesn't work this way. iTunes doesn't see iCloud contacts stored in the Address Book as normal contacts so those don't get synced.

Is there a way to get around this? I'm willing to do a manual sync (i.e. use some other app to copy, en masse, the contacts over), since my contact base doesn't change very frequently.

Disable carrier "features" on IOS 7

My IPhone 4 has some carrier features I would like to disable:

When ever I miss a call this thing opens and I have to close it. If I do not close it(say for ex. a missed call at night) the screen will stay on with this thing till I close it. It will often even drain the whole battery.

I'm using IOS 7 on a jailbroken(I did this hoping I would find a solution there) iPhone.

Correcting GPS data using Photos

Really simple question: Is there a way to fix incorrect GPS data? A recent trip lead to a bunch of pictures taken in the same place getting sometimes wildly wrong coordinates appended to them (probably because the photos were taken indoors).

Does iTunes Mac version 12.1.0.50 know about iCloud Photos?

My iPad Mini reports in General | Usage that it is using 440 MB for photos and camera.

iTunes Mac version 12.1.0.50 reports my iPad Mini is using 13.05 GB for photos, and that the device is Over Capacity.

This version of iTunes Mac also reports "iCloud Photos is On."

Is there a version of iTunes for Mac where the memory usage report takes into account that photos in iCloud do not use memory on the IOS device?

how do I launch firefox after installing it?

I downloaded the .dmg for Firefox, clicked on it, was prompted to drag it to the Applications folder, did so, but cannot launch it.

The directions are to drag the icon from Applications to the dock...but I only see the .dmg file in Applications. How do I know that it installed correctly?

Create a bootable USB with Windows installer for Yosemite?

I'm having trouble creating a bootable USB for my mac. I have an iMac, and I'm wanting to install a copy of Windows Server 2008 x86 onto it. I've tried BootCamp, but I'm getting errors when selecting the ISO because it is "not Windows 7 or later".

Does anyone have any idea how I could create a USB that I can boot on my Mac, with my Windows Server 2008 ISO?

Dvd drive error

enter image description here I have an SSD 250gb from samsung and an hitachte 500gb HDD. I got a hdd caddy and replaced it with the cd drive from my macbook pro mid 2012 I7 8gb ram. I have tried searching the error code but didn't find very much. Could some one tell me why this error is occurring? Osx does not have a bios so i can't disable the dvd drive. Is there a way to manually change this? if not why does apple not have a check for this in their os...?

How can I make iTunes start again after disabling it?

Since iTunes tries to steal my 'Play' button on my keyboard, I disabled it a few months ago. I now wish to buy a movie from the iTunes Store, which means I have to re-enable iTunes.

Problem is: I can't remember what I did to disable it. Currently, after disabling it, starting iTunes shows the icon bouncing but then doesn't launch any windows. Reinstalling iTunes doesn't help. On the command line, I get the following output:

Report battery time since last AC unplug but exclude sleep time

Is there an app or existing command to report the battery time since the laptop was last unplugged from AC but exlude the time spend during sleep on battery?

This can be inferred from pmset -g log so I'm looking for a way to do this without using an app that stays resident. If none exist then I can try a bash script form the pmset -g log output.

Email photos in full resolution from iPhone 6 running iOS 8

iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3. How do I email photos with full resolution. I go to Photos, select some photos, pick Mail, then compose the email. No where in "New Message" does it give me an option to pick the resolution. Once I press send the email is sent with the photos at 1280x960.

Follow-up - For some reason the photo was less than 500KB thus the email app didn't offer an option to resize it.

How can I keep my MBP's battery from charging without removing it?

My battery has expanded and has to be replaced, but I am currently writing my thesis and intend to only keep using my MBP for a few more weeks before I buy a new one. I have heard that it is dangerous to charge the battery once it is in an expanded condition, but I cannot remove the battery myself. Is there a way I can use my Mac with the A/C chord without charging (and without using) the battery?

Failed to mount partition of Mac OS Extended (HFS+)

As a matter of fact, my 1 TB External hard disk has three partition: "MAC OS", "NTFS" and "FAT32". All of the partitions worked very well in the past.

However, I just discovered that my Mac OS Extended (HFS+) formatted "MAC OS" partition could not be mounted, although the other two partitions were seemingly fine. I tried to repair the partition with Disk Utility but it failed. I have no idea why this had happened to my hard disk, since I have not done anything disruptive to my hard disk and my MAC OS partition.

I have only done two things before I discovered that my MAC OS partition was no longer working:

I installed the Apple Security Update 2015-002 when my hard disk was plugged into my Macbook air.

I tried to move some files from my "NTFS" partition to another external hard disk. But it failed because of unknown reason.

This is what I got when I did the "diskutill info" on Terminal:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) shuts down unexpectedly

My wife's MacBook Pro has begun shutting down unexpectedly, at seemingly random intervals. This started occurring after I (very carefully) upgraded the machine from 4 GB to 8 GB of RAM and replaced the old battery, which had reached the end of its life.

The shutdowns are instantaneous, while there is plenty of power left. It's as if the power button was held down. It has happened twice when a USB hard drive was connected, but that might have been a fluke. I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the issue.

Does anyone know how to debug this issue, like if there are any logs of unexpected shutdowns that might provide some clues as to what's going on? Any pointers greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the same machine was having a different issue with sleeping until I upped the RAM and changed the battery. This issue has since stopped happening.

Download App Store apps from terminal

Sorry if this belongs in SO. I have posted it here since it is more to do with Apple then programming.

I am looking to get the new MacBook soon and I want to make a script in terminal (C++ or Bash) that allows me to download apps from the App Store. Is there a way how to do this?

The reason why I want to do this is because I am planing to get the new 12" MacBook and would like to automate the install processes. I know I could click and drag the applications but some (like Xcode) cannot be copied that way.

I have also made small scripts in the past and understand programming so it does not matter if it is advanced to make.

What to do after mistakingly shrinking disk in Disk Utility?

I only had 1 volume on my hard drive. I tried to shrink it with Disk Utility - thinking it would resize the disk and the other space would be available to create another disk with. I didn't add any more partitions or try to format anything. I just slid the resize bar up and clicked apply. When it finished it said could not shrink disk. I haven't done anything from there but slide the size bar up and down.

Do I just restart the Mac or do I need to do something else to be sure that my hard drive is still its full size?

Third party SSD optimisation Yosemite

Unaware of the current issues with Third-Party SSD support on Yosemite I went ahead and bought a 128gb Crucial MX100 SSD.

I hear a lot of problems about enabling Trim on Yosemite etc.

I recently download Chameleon SSD Optimiser. Using this software I enabled Trim and smart optimisation.

QUESTION 1:

What is all the commotion about Trim? Chameleon seemed to have no problem enabling Trim.

QUESTION 2:

What options should I set with Chameleon SSD Optimiser (i.e - Sudden Motion Sensor, NOATIME, Time Machine, Sleep Mode/Image)?

Basically, What is is that Chameleon does to optimise SSD performance and where does Trim come into this, and why are people giving out, this is my main curiosity? Everything seems OK to me...

Mac playing output sound into microphone when using earbuds

My mac is constantly playing any output sound into my microphone when I'm using my Apple earbuds. This means that as soon as a sound is played it's transmitted on Skype when I'm in a call. It's as if I would have had Soundflower or similar software enabled, although I've made sure I do not. I've also made sure that the issue only appears with the earbuds.

I've verified that it has something to do with the combo sound port (I'm using a 2013 MacBook Air) since if I plug the headphones in half-way I don't have the same issue but then only one the left side speaker works because of how the connector is set up.

Edit a printer driver once printer is installed (can only seem to do it when installing a new printer)

Is there a way that you can set the printer driver for a printer that is already installed (other than deleting it an reinstalling). When you install a new printer you get an option to set which print driver it uses (see image below). But i cant seem to edit this once created.

using functions and conditional formatting together in excel 2011

I am a teacher and am trying to create a mail merge to autocomplete a "cover sheet" showing their results for an assessment my students took recently. I have a spreadsheet where I put an 'x' (or anything) to mark the questions the kids got wrong, and leave it blank if they got it right.

I'd like to use this sheet as a reference for another sheet where the question number will be highlighted if the kid got it wrong (if there is an x on sheet1) and just have the question number normal if they got it right (if the corresponding cell in sheet1 is blank).

From here, I'd use sheet2 so those highlighted/normal numbers can quickly be merged into the 25 cover sheets going home.

Hotkey to move mouse and click

I'm currently using Keyboard maestro to create a macro that allows me to move the cursor to certain coordinates and perform a left click.

Unfortunately under Yosemite it doesn't work as expected, since it clicks sporadically (it always moves the cursor but doesn't click everytime).

Are there any other viable options to achieve this? It would be great if I can set coordinates relatively to active window.

How do I change iTunes country with family sharing and child accounts?

I've moved from the US to the UK and I'm trying to change my country in the App store on my iPad. I have family sharing setup, and a child account included in the family sharing.

The problem is that changing countries demands that I disable family sharing first. But when I try to do this, I can't, because I have a child under 13 on my family sharing account which cannot be removed from the family. The child account can be transferred to another family - but I don't have another family!

So it looks like I have to delete my childs account, then disable family sharing, then recreate it all in the UK. Hence losing anything bought by my child and causing a lot of disruption.

Is that really the only way to do it or is there any better method out there?

How to fix iPhone 5S reporting excessive space used for Photo Library?

I have an iPhone 5S running iOS 8.1.3. I have removed all photos from the phone (i.e. the Camera Roll is empty). However, under Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage, it reports that 1.9 GB is still in use for Photos & Camera. Specifically, underneath that, it reports that 1.9 GB is being used for the Photo Library (which is ostensibly empty). This is a large chunk of the storage on my 16 GB phone!

I have tried doing a factory reset of the phone and restoring from backup, with no effect; it still reports the excessive storage usage. I've checked the following:

Photo Stream is not enabled.

iCloud "Photos" is not enabled.

There is no photo sharing of any kind enabled.

Is there anything else that I should look at to determine why the incorrect amount of usage is being reported?

How to view CPU clock rate in GHz or MHz?

I am looking to get the new 12″ MacBook and as a result I would like to know the clock speed (in GHz) my current MacBook Air (late 2010) is running at so I know the processor on the MacBook will cope.

At the moment I know my processor running at the lowest frequency is 1.86GHz (as shown in System Information) and when I look in Activity Monitor as suggested here it only shows me the CPU usage and not the current clock speed. I have also looked at this suggestion but again it does not show me my processing frequency.

The reason why I want to find out the current speed my MacBook Air is running at is because Turbo Charge (explained here) can have it's clock run at various speeds from moment to moment and I don't think my Air's CPU is not supported by the intel power gadget software I downloaded:

Mac package installer installs the folder "Contents" in /Applications instead of the bundle

When I try to use packaging with my .app to create a Mac installer, and I run the installer, it creates me a folder named "Contents" in my /Applications folder, instead the "bundle app" as it should.

I've test with pkgbuild + productbuild:

Where can I download the old Mavericks-compatible version of One Note?

As of version 15.7.1, MS OneNote requires OSX 10.10: Yosemite. But company policy prevents me from upgrading to Yosemite.

How do I run a bash file such that the application that open appears to be native?

For example I am running an old version of iMovie HD in Yosemite.

I would like to open the application as if it was native with an appropriate icon.

Why don't Windows 7 bootable sticks start on MacBook?

On Macbook air ~2014 when I created the bootcamp partition and the Windows bootable stick, it made a stick that can start an install just fine on Windows computers.

Why doesn't that bootable stick start anymore on Mac after the botcamp partition has been deleted? What special setup does that bootcamp do on the partitions/setup process ?

Can I re-create the proper environment with a partition manager starting with the blank hard disk ?

I tried erasing all paritions and then try to boot from that windows stick that bootcamp created but it doesn't boot a Mac anymore (boots fine on PC).
