MacBook Pro 11,3 with dual Dell P2715Q 27" Monitors

I have two Dell P2715Q 27" external monitors I want to connect to my 15" MacBook Pro 11,3 with OSX 10.10.2 ordered around September 2014. I've tried connecting it as follows:

note: tb = thunderbolt, dp = displayport, mdp = mini displayport

First try

• tb 1 -> Dell P2715Q #1 dp in -> Dell P2715Q #1 dp out -> Dell P2715Q #2 mdp in

In this case the two Dell screens will only mirror, and OS X does not seem to recognize that there are actually two displays attached.

Second try

• thunderbolt 1 -> Dell P2715Q #1 displayport in


• thunderbolt 2 -> Dell P2715Q #2 displayport in

In this case one screen will go on, but the other remains black and says there is no signal.

I also have an older 1920x1200 Dell display I want to use via HDMI for a total of 3 external displays, but I need to get an HDMI cable plus the first two screens working first.

Old Time machine backups stored on GoFlex storage not visible

How to find older Time machine backups stored on my GoFlex storage drive?

Hello - I have been using GoFlex as my primary backup once my original Airport TC was full. Recently I upgraded to Yosemite and after successfully installing the new OS, restored my last good backup from GoFlex.

After a few days, I found out that all of the pictures in iPhoto, that were not modified in iPhoto, were not restored during backup! In other words, the "Original" folder inside the iPhoto Library package is empty. I am trying to create my daughter's HS year book page and don't have all the pictures and it is very frustrating.

Now if I go to my GoFlex backups all the previous backups before I upgraded to Yosemite are no longer there! The oldest backup seems to be very first backup done after Yosemite was installed. It looks like TM lost track of previous backups and showing backups only after the Yosemite upgrade. This is strange because, after Yosemite upgrade I was able to restore my whole user data from GoFlex.

Looking at the free space on GoFlex it seems all the old backups are still on it somewhere, but not visible to TM. How can I get those old backups, either through Terminal or through TM? Can someone help, please?

I can't enter anything because keyboard and mouse are unresponsive and I assume the correct drivers were not loaded.

iMac is mid 2007 24" 64 bit (says profiler/other internal monitors). Have downloaded various boot camp versions, followed documented instructions, stood on my head and spit nickels, and still get same error (Select CD Boot ROM type). Made ISO file with Mac Disk Utility (create and change .cdr to .iso) Didn't work either.

After further review, seems that I misread Apple support table which show this model uses Boot Camp 4 for 32-bit Windows 7. Genius - bought install DVD for 64-bit :-o So I guess that's why it won't install.

Going to try suggested method of creating ISO from W7 store-bought DVD on Windows machine just for giggles and see what happens. Then probably go buy the correct DVD for 32-bit :-( Thanks for the info :-)

I would like to design a simple Automator service that would delete last page from PDF passed via finder. My proposed syntax for the Shell Script is:

My Automator workflow looks like that: The syntax to delete first page: /usr/local/bin/pdfsplit "$f" 2- > "$f".tmp, works like a charm so the error must be with doing the arithmetic on page numbers. I tried to modify the syntax:

Recurring window manager performance issues in 10.10.x

I've been having graphical performance problems with Yosemite since early developer previews. The main expression of this is trying to switch applications. When going from Terminal to Messages or Adium or any other application that has a text entry field, it is readily visible that the app is very slow to respond in allowing the user to actually enter text into the field. There is a 1.5 to 5 second delay each time one switches between such apps.

This is not an issue in Mavericks and after having spoken to some other developers, there is a known bug in the Window Manager that is causing some serious performance problems, but I'm not sure if it is this precise problem.

Has anyone seen this issue and / or been able to resolve it properly?

The only thing I have been able to do so far that seems to mostly resolve this issue is to go into System Preferences -> Accessibility and turn on Increase Contrast. Once I do this, applications seem to be fairly responsive again, but this is a very troublesome issue for a few reasons; one of which is that some system UI elements are visually unappealing and hard to read (yes, funny when this is supposed to help, but buttons are particularly affected).

OneDrive not syncing on mac

I have one drive on my new computer and I have about 50gb to upload using the one drive client from the Mac App Store. It scans the files but always hangs after trying to upload a few kilobytes. Any help?

Yosemite Messages blank window

Messages on Yosemite used to work fine until this morning, repeatedly asking me for my Apple ID password. Months ago I had setup 2 factor authentication for my Apple ID, but it never complained. So I set up an app specific password, Facetime took it no problem, Messages didn't and kept asking for my password. I quit, log out, restart, disable/enable from my phone, nothing works. So I disable 2FA, try again and now Messages gives me a blank window when it starts.

Is there any way I can reset it somehow ?

I can't update my apps. I click on the update button and it asks for my Apple ID the just changes back to update. Iv tapped it several times and just goes back to update button. Iv force reset my phone a few times doesn't work either. I don't know what to do because my apps won't let me open them until there updated. Please help?

Mac Encrypted HDD Please help!

Hi everyone I have encrypted a partition of an external hard drive from the mac desktop. I pressed that key button then pressed memorable and it changed my entire password unknowingly. I need help. All I know now is that its 12 characters long.

I have loads of pictures and videos on there from when my kids were born. Please someone help me I beg you. Also please don't tell me its impossible because nothing is impossible.

Music library deleted from iPhone

I switched from the iPhone to a Samsung last May and today decided to charge my old phone to use it as a regular iPod. However, when I turned it on all of my music was gone. Hey everyone so I have an encrypted hard drive with many memories on it and it seems impossible to find someone to decrypt it without the password.

So I am not going to erase it but keep it as a time capsule and when technology advances I believe it can be broken.

It was encrypted with my mac and all I know is that its 12 characters long.

Its frustrating to hear "It will never be your screwed" or "6 billion years so you'll be dead" so please don't say that because that doesn't help.

Use specific local gcc and related libraries with Homebrew

I would like to use Homebrew to install some stuff,

In the mean time, I have already installed my local gcc, and I want Homebrew to use this specific one(this gcc at /usr/local/bin/gcc is frequently upgraded by myself).

Unfortunately, Homebrew always figure out its gcc dependency, and related libraries, e.g. gmp and mpfr, then download them all at /usr/local/Cellar.

I just want to keep things simple, use my installed gcc, link with the existing library, say gmp and mpfr(at /usr/local/lib), is it possible with Homebrew?

iTunes doesn't allow me to create playlists and playlist folders anymore

I'm a bit stumped. So I was trying to add some MP3s to my iPhone 5 using iTunes and it simply doesn't react to the clicks on the respective symbols anymore.

Here's a partial screenshot:

The shown playlists and playlist folders are contained in a parent playlist folder, which was selected prior to attempting to add a playlist.

The two controls at the bottom with the plus and the cog don't work. It's as if they're disabled, but it's hard to tell for me in this Apple-style GUI.

Does anyone have an idea how I could convince iTunes to let me create (smart) playlists and playlist folders again?

NB: this is the music "tab" and I have opened the "Device" node for my iPhone on the left hand side and selected the parent playlist folder there.

Preview/Mail printing issue

I am attempting to print PDF's (and save documents as PDF's) as close to full bleed as possible. Right now I am losing approximately 3/4" in margin left, right, top and bottom. Any way to adjust margins in Preview? I do not see the option to create a custom size paper as I've seen suggested as a work-around. On a related note, it appears that an email that is printed from Mac Mail is first converted to a PDF. Is this correct and is there a different method to print email that will not cut off text top and bottom besides pasting it into a Word document?

Repurposing "menu" button on Windows keyboards used in OS X

Windows keyboards map pretty intuitively to OS X, leaving only the "context menu" button a little purposeless. I would like the menu key to behave as another Command key.

On this keyboard, the "context menu" key is directly under the "." (period/greater than) key; on the bottom row between "alt" and "ctrl" on the right side, two keys to the left of the "left arrow" key. What does it do in OS X, and what is it called?

Messages will not login; just sits and spins

Whenever I open Messages, enter my credentials, and attempt to login the status indicator spins forever and the application never authenticates me and loads.

I had this issue on Mavericks and still have it on Yosemite. I tried removing the frameworks for Messages/iMessage in OS X and even reinstalled the OS from the recovery partition, but nothing works.

Has anyone else had the same issue and any luck with resolving it? Thanks for your time!

Can I connect to wifi but still use cellular?

I would like to be able to connect to my cars wifi dashcam while in the car but still be able to use my iPhone's cellular connection (dashcam has no access to the Internet). How can I achieve this?

Search result -> filename instead of name (For smart folders)

Can anybody help me out. I want to create a smartfolder with all my mp3's. I renamed all my mp3's to correct full name. For example

"Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight.mp3"

When I create a smart folder. It shows all my mp3's but with the name from metadata (ID3 tag) so only In the air tonight. There is no way to select filename in the colums

This is really annoying

Does anybody know a solution? Or another program that does the trick? Or a hack?

Can't delete partitions after attempting BOOTCAMP on my iMac 5k

I recently tried to install a bootcamp instance of Win 7. The install failed for some reason. This left me with a partition that I can not access via Disk Utility

If you notice..the +- can not be selected and hence I can't delete the partition and recover the space on my drive

I tried to follow the instructions posted here by klanomath but have had no success.

It could be because I have 2 CoreStorage logical volume groups about which I have no clue as to what it is

Can I stop Dropbox from automatically updating itself on OS X?

Dropbox seems to auto-update itself on OS X. Problem is that the latest version of Dropbox doesn't support OS X 10.10.0 which I have to run for compatibility with other apps.

I tried re.installing an older version of Dropbox, which then works for a few minutes before it updates itself again.

Is there a way to stop Dropbox from updating itself so I can stay with an older version of Dropbox?

A method for exporting contacts from iPhone which can handle more than two phone numbers per contact

I want to export my iPhone contacts to my computer. I tried to use iTunes to sync them with Windows Address Book, however, if my iPhone contact has three phone numbers, only two of them appear in WAB. I want a way to export contacts which preserves all phone numbers, their order and labels. Unfortunately, all the guides on exporting contacts that I've read don't mention limitations like this. How to do this? I don't want to put my contacts on any online service, such as Gmail or iCloud.

Implications of using a USB SSD drive to run VM images off

I'm running VMware Fusion on my Apple Macbook Pro (15 inch, Mid 2012, OSX 10.10.2), and have several VM images that are stored on an external USB3 disk (WD Passport).

The external disk is fine for regular usage, but the performance difference between running a VM from the external drive compared to running it from the internal SSD is huge. As my SSD is limited in size, I'm unable to host all of my VMs on it, and constantly moving VMs between the external disk and the SSD is quite time-consuming.

Therefore, I was looking at external SSD disks, specifically for running my virtual machines. AFAIK, I have the option between using a flash disk (such as the VisionTek 120GB USB 3.0 Pocket SSD Drive) or buying an internal SSD drive and sticking it in a USB enclosure (e.g. the Inateck USB3 HDD Enclosure with UASP). Other interfaces are not really an option: the MacBook does not have eSATA and anything with a Thunderbolt connector is prohibitively expensive.

From what I've read, the USB controller does not support TRIM, which is less than ideal. However, TRIM should be supported when using the USB Attached SCSI (UASP) protocol instead of the Bulk-Only-Transport (BOT) protocol.

Here's what I'd like to know:

• Is it true that UASP offers TRIM support? If so, what do you need to do to enable it (if anything)? E.g. do you need to run something like Chameleon SSD Optimizer to enable TRIM on the external disk?


• How can I determine if UASP is supported on my MacBook Pro? I've read the instructions here, but this means I would need a UASP enabled device first in order to check if it is recognised as such. I'd prefer knowing if it'll work before ordering the hardware.

Fixing Smart Mailboxes

I recently had to restore my ~/Library/Mail folder from a Time Machine backup, and upon opening Mail it imported the mailboxes seemingly successfully, however my Smart Mailboxes no longer function, despite appearing to be correct.

My smart mailboxes aren't anything fancy, they basically just group similar items; for example, if accounts A and B both have an IMAP folder named "Newsletters" then the corresponding smart mailbox simply combines messages that reside in either folder; it's a simple match any rule for each mailbox.

However, even though these smart mailboxes appear to be valid (pointing to the correct mailboxes), nothing is appearing within them at all. I've already tried rebuilding every mailbox, as well as closing Mail, clearing its entry under ~/Library/Containers (to force it to rebuild its cache) and relaunching. I've also tried creating new smart mailboxes, but these don't work either, so there must be an index somewhere that's not functioning correctly, but I've already tried deleting the envelope index files under ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData.

Is there anything else I can do to solve this problem?

After reading articles about the state of Truecrypt in February 2015, I decided to download the last stable version of Truecrypt that allows full usage of Truecrypt: that is, version 7.1a

7.2 version that can only be used to view, but no longer to create new, TrueCrypt volumes.

I then proceeded to install this on my Mac, running on Yosemite 10.10

But I got the error message "truecrypt 7.1a requires 10.4 or later", see below.

I guess it's simply a schoolboy error from a developer of the Truecrypt team, as it considers 10.4 being above 10.10, or maybe it's rather Apple who messed up & should have consistantly used 2 digits after the dot (i.e. use 10.04 rather than 10.4).

In any case, I find myself unable to install Truecrypt. Anyone found a solution for this?

How to make instant switch between apps in different screens?

I'm using Yosemite.

Problem is: when I have different apps in MULTIPLE screens, and I switch them using Cmd+Tab then there is a "flash" animation that takes around half a second. It is very annoying, because I must wait for the animation to finish before typing again, and that breaks my work flow.

When the apps are in a single screen, the switch is instantaneous: I just can Cmd+Tab and keep typing without any noticeable delay.

Anyone knows what is the defaults setting to disable or make this animation shorter?

There are some similar questions, but they talk about switching desktops, not about switching apps in the same desktop but in multiple screens.

Cannot install network profile on Yosemite

I'm having trouble connecting to the "Eduroam" network at my University.

Some time ago the Airport connector on my motherboard decided it was time to melt down, so I'm forced to use an USB WiFi dongle (a D-Link DWA-121). However, the Wireless Network Utility (managing the new WiFi device) does not allow me to enter my username in order to connect to the network, which requires the use of 802.1x authentication protocol.

I downloaded a profile configuration file from the network configuration help page on the website but I'm not able to install it. After asking for my username and password it complains that

The 'Wi-Fi Network' payload could not be installed. The Wi-Fi network either could not be found, or could not be connected. You may need to try to reconnect at a later time.

I can only assume that the profile manager is trying to find the network using the standard Airport card on my Mac (which however will never work again until I change my motherboard) because the network is there and is shown in the Wireless Network Utility.

Is there any way to force the profile manager to install the given profile, so that I can connect to the network? Or is there any other way around this problem?

High memory usage on MacBook PRO retina 16Gb i7 2,5ghz

I'm using a MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch 16Gb Processor 2,5 Ghz Intel Core i7 Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 Mb OS: OS X Yoseminte v10.10.2

I'm having a problem with my ram. I think its eating too much rum when I'm not doing anything..

And this is how it looks when I have the Adobe Photoshop open (a small psd file 5,2Mb), Microsoft Word (1 page), Itunes, And the Chrome Browser (12 tabs opened)

Can someone help me with this issue? Why is it eating that much RAM? If there is any other info that you need for this situation please tell me so I can get that for you. Thank you

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

iPhone/iPad sync Exchange calendar

I have an iPhone and an iPad - both use iOS 8.1.3 and both have Exchange on to sync my work calendar and emails.

Both also have a home calender on, and aol personal email.

Recently, my iPhone will not sync the exchange calendar, but my iPad does. Exchange appointments put in last year remain, but new ones made this year will not show in the phone if made in Exchange or show in exchange if made on the phone.

What is going wrong please? I've missed a couple of meetings, until I realised it is now uneliable. Thanks, Sarah

Hidden Applications

When I click on the Apple Logo->About This Mac->Storage it says that I have 45GB worth of applications

.

I downloaded and ran OmniDisk Sweeper it says that it found 22GB worth of files in total .

Any ideas how I can find and remove these "applications" and free up disk space?
