I am looking for a nice and quick way to display the resolution of an image. Presently, I have to open the image in photoshop and then enter a menu to know the resolution. The process is too slow when I have to browse through dozens of pictures and get those with resolution big enough.

Perform restore without update?

I want to restore my iPad to factory settings. Its an iPad 2,1 running iOS 8.1:

However, when I connect to iTunes and click Restore iPad..., I get the message:

I'm not interested in 8.1.3, which is what a Restore and Update would result. In fact, I need to keep the iPad at 8.1.2 or lower due to operational requirements. So iOS 8.1 is fine by me.

How do I perform a restore without updating?

Macintosh HD disappeared from finder after "disk damaged and cannot be repaired"

I have a MacPro 13.3 Inch mid2011 with 500GB storage and recently while performing a Mac update, it froze and was still stuck on a grey screen even after multiple restart attempts. I finally tried Command+R to attempt Time Machine(none were available), Disk Utility but "Repair Disk" was greyed out, and finally tried to reinstall Mac OS X but when it was close to completion, again, it showed Macintosh HD is damaged.

  2. Ran OS X Installer and selected my External Hard Drive as the target. Near completion, it gave me the option of transferring my information from another drive. I selected the first option (Mac etc), but when it came to loading my internal drive, it didn't load. I let it run for several hours but still to no avail so I skipped the process and finished registering.
  
  
  3. When my Mac loaded, it showed the message that Macintosh HD is damaged. Please back up your files immediately.
  
  
  4. I loaded Finder, but Macintosh HD is not listed under devices.

Is there anyway of recovering the data on my Macintosh HD now?

If I don't replace the hard drive and just continue to operate using my external hard drive will that work? I am not sure whether it's better to just get a Thinkpad or repair/replace the internal hard drive.

Why does my iPhone 4s randomly turn off?

So about last week, I dropped my phone and it went black with blue vertical lines. So I took it to a store and got it fixed. The LCD was broken and they just needed to replace the screen. A few days after and currently, my phone has been randomly shutting off when I'm using it. Sometimes it will even restart, but often it just turns off. It takes forever to turn it back on. When it turns off, it has charge. There is no reason for it to be turning off by itself. I brought it back to the store yesterday and they said my battery was defective, so I got a new battery installed into my phone, but it keeps turning off!! What do I do???

Using iMedia Framework

iMedia Framework by Karelia is used in a host of different applications to access media. Some versions (like that seen in HoudahGeo or Fotogafico) can access Aperture and iPhoto libraries, and Lightroom catalogs. Other versions (like in Comic Life or Rapidweaver) apparently use a different version that only accesses Aperture/iPhoto and NOT Lightroom.

I don't know much about the use of frameworks, but is there any way to adapt, replace or otherwise change the iMedia Framework used by the applications that do NOT access Lightroom so that they can?

There was once a standalone iMedia Browser you could use with any application, but it is no longer available.

Can't burn newly created playlist to CD with iTunes 12.1

I just want to burn some music for my Mom to a CD-R. I've done this multiple times. If I check MP3 CD box, I receive message stating all music is not MP3, and it won't allow. If I check other option, Data CD or DVD, it copies but if I insert into CD player, message is, " No Audio."

This can't be this hard.

Any help is appreciated.

Swapping colors with a VGA connector/cable

If I spliced 2 cables together (or made a specialized connector) but reversed all the Red/Blue wires respective to themselves (Pin 1/3 and 6/8), would the result actually swap the colors displayed on a monitor?

Also, do one of these connectors already exist?

Why, at Starbucks, is my MAC address provided to Starbucks when I accept the terms of service?

recently I overheard by chance (I wasn't asking) that when I accept the terms of service in order to use the free Wifi at Starbucks, they actually perform an HTTP operation that sends my MAC address in the URL to the service that Starbucks has contracted with. Why do they do that? Are they actually recording all of my traffic? If so that is a serious privacy violation!

Also, why would the Javascript running in the pop-up have access to the MAC address of my computer?

SPECIFIC TEXT MSG DELETE TRASH CAN DISAPPEARS AFTER 1 REBOOT

I did the IOS 8.1.3 update on my iPhone 5S. When I want to delete specific text messages, as usual you click "more" and tick the relevant text messages to delete, the trash bin appears and you can delete. However it only works the first time the phone is switched on now, if you go into another conversation to delete specific text messages, click "more" and tick relevant text messages to delete, the trash bin has vanished. Only way is to delete the entire conversation (which I don't want to do), or to switch phone off complete and back on again - then it works just once and vanishes again. Anyone else encountered the same problem. I thought maybe a new feature has been added, so tried swiping messages, etc but nothing happens.

How to restore a playlist (not the music) in iTunes?

Background: I recently had to restore OS 10.8.5 and incredibly, the hard drive containing TimeMachine info crashed half way into the restoration process. Fortunately, the most critical files/folders were copied and saved but various preferences and iTunes was not among them. However, I had all the music on another drive so importing the music into iTunes was not a problem.

Problem: The problem is how to restore the playlists. I had over a hundred, mostly smart playlists, that had detailed info on what songs to include in that particular playlist.

I have tried exporting a copy of my playlist from my Classic iPod, which has more or less all the playlists that I want (and which were originally created from the original iTunes on the computer, of course.) However, nothing happens when I import the playlist into iTunes. No playlists appear in the left side of iTunes.

All the information and suggestions out there basically point to restoring the music into iTunes which many people seem to call playlist. I'm talking about the actual playlist that points to the music already in iTunes.

Any solution? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Remove Google Chrome from Dock when running google packaged apps

So.. I use Postman - Rest client (Packaged App) which come in google chrome store and can be launched as an app but with google chrome engine.

If I launch this packaged app from dock, google chrome icon will also appear in dock. And if I click on this google chrome icon, google chrome will launch.

How to remove this icon but remain only Packaged App icon (in my case Postman icon).

Why can I not create a directory on my external hard-drive?

When I try to make a new directory on my external hard-drive I get a message saying that it is a "Read-only file system"

Which version of bootcamp 4.x do I need to install Windows 7 (64 bit) on an iMac7,1 with Yosemite?

Specs: 64 bit Core 2 Duo, 4GB, 16GB Flash, optical drive, Windows 7 install DVD

I can't enter anything because keyboard and mouse are unresponsive and I assume the correct drivers were not loaded.

iMac is mid 2007 24" 64 bit (says profiler/other internal monitors). Have downloaded various boot camp versions, followed documented instructions, stood on my head and spit nickels, and still get same error (Select CD Boot ROM type). Made ISO file with Mac Disk Utility (create and change .cdr to .iso) Didn't work either.

After further review, seems that I misread Apple support table which show this model uses Boot Camp 4 for 32-bit Windows 7. Genius - bought install DVD for 64-bit :-o So I guess that's why it won't install.

Going to try suggested method of creating ISO from W7 store-bought DVD on Windows machine just for giggles and see what happens. Then probably go buy the correct DVD for 32-bit :-( Thanks for the info :-)

How to add free space to a Logical Volume Group? (Resizing Partitions)

I have two CoreStorage volumes on disk, one is 200GB the other is 50GB. I want to make the 1st 125GB and the second one 125GB.

Currently I have been able to use the diskutil cs resizeStack command to shrink my 200GB disk to 125GB. But am unable to expand my second CoreStorage volume to 125GB since its Logical Volume Group doesn't contain the free space I generated.

If I try to resize the logicalVolume, or the Stack or the Disk they all get the same error:

How can I create a Wi-Fi network on my Mac with OS X Yosemite that my Android device can connect to (Nexus 5/7)?

The Android device does not see the network if I use Internet Sharing.

Microsoft Remote Desktop - Remote Resource different behaviour than in full client

I'm using MS Remote Desktop 8.0.13 (Build 25377) on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. If I execute the application (Password Safe 7) on the full client it works fine, if I start the remote resource I get asked for a license file.

I had this problem on the full client as well, but it was fixed by copying the missing files into my profile. I already removed and added the resource back, to no avail.

I suppose there might be a caching issue, but I found not settings for it in the application.

Stopping the application and deleting the content of: ~/Library/Containers/http://ift.tt/1DYv3Rv and ~/Library/Containers/http://ift.tt/1CAkS3w Application State didn't help.

Mac NetInstall does not send booter on specific devices

Using Mac Server on 10.9, with only NetInstall working (we use InfoBlox for DHCP) I can successfully NetBoot to our only image from a iMac Pro (Core2Duo), but not from a MacBook Pro (Intel i7, ~2012).

• I captured the NBI on the newer MacBook Pro (Deploystudio Netboot Set)


• Both devices list the boot image in the boot options menu at startup.


• Both devices allow me to SELECT the image.


• Both devices send a BSDP ACK[SELECT] to the server.


• Server sends both devices at least an ACK pktsize 300 to the correct IP.

The MacBook Pro decides, after all this, that it will just boot to the regular local disk, which is not what should happen. Whereas the main iMac boots to the network disk (Apple Logo with mini spinning globe).

Does anyone have any ideas why the MacBook Pro does not boot, considering it is communicating with the server?

How to debug hangs in multiple subsystems (typically audio and networking)?

“Special” things installed:

• Bartender


• Multiple VPN providers


• Multiple chat/voice providers (plugins for BlueJeans, Hangouts, etc, Skype, HipChat, ScreenHero, probably others)


• Currently switching between two different bluetooth headsets

Here's the list of issues I've been experiencing over the past week:

• Freezing/failing when trying to change audio sources (Bartender -> Volume -> Option Click)


• Mysterious dropping of networking (networking freezes, everything goes offline


• Audio systems switching, dropping, not connecting over Bluetooth


• Bluetooth failing to connect to devices (typically headsets)


• Failure to connect over VPN, typically after awaking from sleep, leads to total failure of networking stack for a few minutes


• Audio failures tend to hang Safari indefinitely until force quit


• Networking failures tend to hang Safari indefinitely until force quit


• Audio Hijack tends to crash / fail to start.

That's the list of issues, and I need some general purpose debugging steps for when a system starts to crash/hang.

• Is there something I can kill -9 and have it restart for a general system (audio/networking)?


• Where are the specific logs for these systems?


• What are typical problem causers (third-party or configuration wise) I can remove or fix?

I've selected some text using my keyboard, starting at the bottom line and moving up (the | character indicates the cursor position):

Now, I would like to change the selection so that it starts at the end of the first line, i.e. so that it looks like this:

I can reduce the selection word-by-word with ⌥ ⇧ →:

But the natural way to do it would be via ⌘ ⇧ →, to jump directly to the end of the first line. In many decent text editors this works fine (for instance Sublime Text 2). They also keep the | position visible when text is selected btw.

The default behaviour of OSX apps, however, is that they ignore the fact that the cursor is currently at the start of the selection, and moving it to the right should remove the selection there. Instead, ⌘ ⇧→ always extends the selection from its end until the end of the line, no matter where the cursor currently is:

Is there any way to make also native OSX apps behave the expected way?

I'm on OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 but I think this issue has been there as long as I can remember.

OSX Yosemite Finder sort by date modified wrong?

In the image of an OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 Finder window below, you can see that the content of the 'blog' folder has been most recently modified. However, the 'Date modified' sort of the parent folder 'D' is not showing the 'blog' folder at the top of the list.

Why is this, and is there a way to sort the list as I intend? I seem to remember it was fine in previous versions of OSX.

What's the difference between the M7 and M8 coprocessors? I've been unable to find a clear answer online. On the iPhone 6 webpage, Apple simply states:

Can I set a Timecapsule to connect to a wireless network, and hook up more network equipment to it with cables?

Currently I have an older style Timecapsule 2GB, the flat type, connect to my cable modem, and distributing network to my apartment both through cables (Xbox, PS4, Apple TV) and WIFI (everything else).

I want to move this to a different room and in its place put a newer Airport Express.

The question is, can I do the following?

1. Move the Timecapsule to a different room and ask it to join the WIFI network set up by the Airport Express


2. Hook up nearby equipment (a computer and a NAS) to the Timecapsule, and thus spread the network to those units as well?


3. Still continue backing up my iMac and MacBook Pro to it, without changes (provided I keep its name)

I read this article: Wi-Fi base stations: Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations and it has this section:

I understand the part about being nearby, but the webpage mentions base stations as the unit you can use to extend and I'm not sure if a time capsule counts as a "base station" as it also mentions other types, so my question is, with the above setup, and the existing time capsule being the unit on the right, can I hook up a computer and a NAS to it using cables, and access them while connected to the left apple router over WIFI?

The setup would be:

• Leftmost apple unit, connected to the cable modem with yellow cable, would server my Xbox, PS4, tables, MacBook Pro, iMac, using a combination of WIFI and cabled network


• Rightmost apple unit, old time capsule


• A server-like computer + a NAS connected to the time capsule using cables

Emptying the trash failed with "can't copy" on Yosemite

While using empty stack securely under Yosemite, it halted with the message:

You can't copy the item InfoPlist.strings because its name is too long or includes characters that are invalid on the destination volume.

What's the matter and, more important, what can I do about it?

PS. It might be that the InfoPlist.strings is located on an MS-DOS (FAT32) partition on an USB disk. (On which I lost 130 GB because I deleted that data.)

How do I really (dig) flush the DNS cache on OS X 10.9?

I'm on OS X 10.9, according to support.apple.com I can flush the cache with

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Unfortunately this does not really refresh my DNS cache at all, also not like this:

dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

E.g.

$ dig www.example.com|grep CNAME
www.example.com.    83955   IN  CNAME   example.com.

If cache were cleared it would be showing a number close to 86400, 3600, 300 or 60 are the TTL values offered by my domain name provider).

If I add @dns-host to dig it works as expected:

$ dig @ns0.transip.net www.example.com|grep CNAME
www.example.com.    60  IN  CNAME   GITHUBACCOUNT.github.io.

I also tried the other commands on that page. In the meantime I work around this by ssh'ing onto one of my servers and check things there. But I'd like a proper way to really refresh all DNS cache on my Mac. How can I do that?

Why is saying verification required on my iPhone 5c?

Every time I try to download a free app or update an old app it said verification required. I sign in and it take me straight to the billing/credit card page and I can't get out of it. I have even tried putting in my card number and stuff and it just says that I have entered a wrong number but when I look at my bank account it shows that it took out $5.97. How do I make it stop so I can update my apps?

Prevent iTunes from opening when connecting bluetooth speaker

I did read iTunes keeps starting automatically but since I don't have the console output mentioned in this thread I don't know how to pin down the problem. So iTunes keeps opening when connecting my speaker (UE Boom) via Bluetooth. I did read that iTunesHelper could cause this. So I quit the process in Activity Monitor, removed it from the login items and renamed the application as suggested in iTunes Helper still running even if it is off. But iTunes still keeps starting, iTunesHelper doesn't it seems as I cannot see it in Activity Monitor anymore. I am running Mavericks 10.9.5 and have iTunes 12.1.0.50 installed. What can I do to prevent iTunes from starting automatically?

Switching from month to week calendar

On iPhone one can switch to the week calendar view by turning the device into the landscape orientation mode. If you are on a day the week shown is the week, where the current day was. There are always three days shown in the week view. The first day of the week is either the current day or the selected day is in the middle of the three shown days.

If you are on month view things get complicated. I can't really predict which day will be shown. It works for most times if you go two rows up from last row (week) shown. But this doesn't work for all cases.

What is the system behind showing the first week calendar day when switching from month view?

Sync bookmarks between iOS8 and OS X 10.10 without iCloud

iCloud is not on option. Sync via Google solutions is not an options for the same reasons.

How can I locally sync bookmarks between iOS 8 and OS X 10.10? I cannot believe this is not possible and Apple did indeed kill off this important functionality in regards to privacy with iTunes 11 and newer.

Using a separate outgoing email without downloading the full delegate mailbox, Outlook 2011?

In the organisation I work for I have my own personal mailbox, and there is a group email for the department. For outgoing emails to customers I need to use this group email as my sender address, while internal emails can come from my personal address.

I have achieved this by adding the group mailbox as an account I can delegate for. This works.

Problem is, it's now going ahead and downloading each and every email & attachment archived in the group mailbox onto my machine. This is a pointless use of space.

Is there a different way I can do this? Or can I stop it from downloading emails from this specific mailbox automatically, while it should still download for my personal one?

My USB modem has issues so my Mac doesn't recognize it. I created an ad hoc wifi hotspot on my Windows 7 laptop with WPA2 encryption and shared the internet. Apple service for getting time since epoch

Is there any Apple service which offers something like this?

This is a good service but nobody can say is it reliable, or how long it will be available.

Also I think it would be overkill for me to pay a server just for one piece of data like time since of epoch. The reason why I don't want to use system time, is because user can mess with a clock.

Iphone 5S, GPS is not accurate

I have iphone 5s (ios 8.1.3), lately I started using a navigation app and noticed that my GPS signal is not accurate means that the speed is not working and my position is stuck or moves slow.

I downloaded some other GPS apps to make sure it isn't an app problem, same behavior. I used some GPS tools (such as GPS status app) and noticed that I'm getting only 65 meters accuracy while using another iphone (with the same app in the same location on the same time) I'm getting less than 10 meters accuracy.

I did try to hard restart, turning off and on the location services and some more tips I found in the web - nothing helped. I even tried to restore my iphone and test my GPS on a clean iphone to find the same problem.

Everything (Wifi, Bluetooth, 4G, 3G, etc.... ) are working just fine on my iphone.

Is it an hardware problem? how can I fixed it? ** my warranty already expired ...

Making music and photos available to Apple TV

I have a double story house with the modem upstairs and an Apple TV downstairs. I also have a USB hard drive with an iTunes library and iPhoto library on it. At the moment every time I want to use the libraries I have to plug my USB drive into my MacBook.

I've recently discovered that my modem has a USB port on it, and I can plug my USB hard drive into that. Can I plug my hard drive into that port and make the libraries accessible to both my MacBook and Apple TV?

If possible I don't want to have to keep my MacBook turned on all the time. I.e., it would be nice to just have the USB hard drive plugged into the modem and access my library on the Apple TV without my MacBook being turned on.

In researching this answer I've read a lot about Apple's AirPort Extreme and how it can do something like that. But unless that's my only option I would rather not spend an extra $200 if I don't have to.
