Fix formatted GPT in SSD

I accidentally formatted my SSD's GPT while formatting a USB in Linux's gparted. Now, when running gpt in Mac's command line, this is how my SSD looks like:

My-MacBook-Pro:~ user$ sudo gpt -r show disk2
start size index contents
0 1 PMBR
1 1 Pri GPT header
2 32 Pri GPT table
34 1000215149
1000215183 32 Sec GPT table
1000215215 1 Sec GPT header

I used to have 2 partitions on this drive: Mac OSX and a Windows 8.1 bootcamp partition. I wouldn't mind loosing the latter.

I have heard about being able to restore the partition with the gpt command in Mac. Is this possible in my case?

Thanks, Martin

Does Time Machine improve startup time?

This may initially sound like a question, and I'm by no means a amateur user of the OSX Operating system(s).

However, upon recently upgrading to Yosemite, my system has become SUPER slow to boot, and I'm wondering if Time Machine will at all aid the start up time by distributing the burden to two disks?

Thanks in advance.

Weather apps that report snow accumulation

Are there any weather apps for iOS that report the amount of snow accumulation, not just precipitation? Something like 3-5" of snow is expected.

I've tried the stock weather app and several others. All I seem to get is whether or not it will snow and the amount of precipitation which is merely a fraction of actual snow accumulation. Ideally I'd also like to know if ground/road conditions are expected to be icy.

Is it possible to boot from an encrypted external hard drive?

If I have an external hard drive with a bootable cloned backup (via SuperDuper) - if I encrypt it with the Finder will I still be able to boot from it if necessary?

TextEdit does not show recent documents in Yosemite

I am new to Mac OS X Yosemite. How do I make TextEdit show recent documents? When I go to File and select Recent Documents, it does not show the last few documents like it used to.

Multiple iOS App Store Updates in under three days

The other day I noticed that some major apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Nike, Facebook, etc. can have multiple updates (sometimes three or more) in only a few days (less than three or four). See this screenshot from Instagram's update schedule below and notice that they've published three updates in the past four days.

enter image description here

How is this possible? Apple takes at least a week or more per app review (including minor updates). In order to speed up the process to say two or three days, one can submit an Expedited App Review Request. However, Apple only grant these on a limited basis.

How do apps like this get updated so darn quick? Is Apple playing favorites to major companies and keeping smaller developers at the bottom of their queue?

Random Restarts, GPU Panic

As of today, my 15" 2010 Macbook Pro has randomly rebooted twice within an hour. I'm including the Panic Report that was displayed after the computer rebooted.

I'm running OS X 10.10.2, connected to an external monitor via mini display port to VGA adapter, and I was using these applications when the reboots occurred:

  • firefox

  • vlc

  • skype

  • finder

My questions are: What's causing the problem? and what should I do to prevent this from ever happening again?

New event invite does not appear on my wife's iphone

I have set up a new event on my iPhone and invited my wife who also has an iPhone but my wife is not receiving the invite?

Managing iOS settings for multiple devices

I want to manage 100 iPads and configure them identically. Each will be used as a kiosk, so there is no individual user for each device. I want push some custom in-house apps out to these devices, and manage some settings.

I have Profile Manager running on OS X Server and it looks like this allow me to deploy my apps (once they are signed using an enterprise developer account). However, I don't see any facility for managing the following device settings:

  • Auto-lock should be disabled

  • There should be no passcode set

  • The 'Guided Access' mode should be enabled (General->Accessibility) and the triple-click home button shortcut enabled. A given passcode should be used (these are all standard iOS settings available on the device).

  • The home screen should be laid out a certain way to help IT staff access the correct apps and ignore others.

Is there any way to manage these kind of settings? Or will I need to manually set these for each device?

SD Card, Error Code 36 after copying additional files to a camera memory card using finder

I'm getting an Error Code-36 when trying to retrieve files from a FAT32 SD card (from my camera) onto a mac formatted drive. Half of the files will not even open, let alone copy across from the card!

I now think I know what caused this behavior but cannot find the solution to retrieving the data.

Some further detail:

I was going to lend the SD card to a friend which was full of .movs from my camera. I also copied some additional files from my desktop onto the card that they needed. I believe this is what has caused the issue as there is now some confusion over file system types within the SD card.

Does anyone know how I can make a backup of the SD card before reformatting inside the camera?

P.S. the error code 36 is being raised by normal .mov files, NOT a hidden 'dot file', I've not tried a dot-clean or disk repair yet as I'm weary of loosing all the files.

Thanks so much

Why is softwareupdated taking up all my memory?

The process softwareupdated seems to be taking up way too much memory. It can take up to 400 MB RAM sometimes. I can't nail down what is causing this to happen, so I've been watching my console closely. I've narrowed one incident to a 15 minute period, but I still can't see what might be causing this. I am attaching the console output below. Usually softwareupdated only takes up 18 MB. When it gets up to 400 MB, it won't ever go back down unless I restart my computer. Its like it can't release the memory or something. Its very frustrating since it slows my computer down considerably. I have also had my computer freeze a few times requiring a manual shutdown. It seems the problems started with update 10.10.2, but this may be a coincidence.

Has anyone else experienced this? What can I do to fix this?

Anyone else having problems joining domain in OS X 10.10.2?

I am (have confirmed I have rights since I can remove and join a Windows 7 box) having problems joining a Yosemite OS X 10.10.2 to the domain--I receive a "authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation (5202)" no matter if I use the GUI to join the "Network Account Server" or use DSCONFIGAD command-line command at Terminal.

I was able to join two Mac Minis on 10.10.x a few months ago but I am having problems with a new-out-of-the-box Mini right now. Even tried erasing and reinstalling from a OS X 10.10.2 thumb drive.

How do you use in an Aperture photobook text; the function "layout orientation" vertical?

I have made many phonebooks in Aperture but I can't figure out how to use the function "Layout orientation" for text. It appears that you should be able to make the text appear vertically; instead of horizontally but how?

Usually I select the text; use "edit layout", select the text, and then choose "layout orientation" = vertical. It goes vertical but as soon as the cursor leaves the text box it jumps back to horizontal.

Escaping the in-app browser in iOS apps

Most iOS apps that open web pages open them in in-app browsers. These are somewhat restrictive, in that they don’t support bookmarks (and hence bookmarklets) or Handoff (although they do support AirDrop). Is there a quick way to open them in the full Safari iOS app?

The Share Sheet doesn’t seem to have one built in. You can copy and paste the URL, but that’s quite a bit of precise tapping.

This seems like functionality a third-party extension could add pretty easily. Not interested in jailbreaking though.

Create alias for hotkey (iTerm2)

I'd like to create an alias for the hotkey I defined to open up iTerm2.

Right now I use fn-F1 to open up and hide the window - but I'd like to map it to F13 as well because of I can access this key as long as I have my wired keyboard attached.

Is there any way to create an alias which just triggers/ emulates a hotkey?

File upload problem?

For some reason when I attempt to upload files anywhere it doesn't give me the option? I can't click on any part of the files in any of the view options. How can I verify my account quicker

I am Crystal Gee and I do have an Apple ID, I did get it from Microsoft at outlook, but when I go to the App Store and try to purchase an app, and the sign popped up and said "to sign in to the account store, you have to verify your account. When i tried to verify my account, the account wouldn't verify and one time, I charged the phone over night and kept the i-pod there so the account can verify, I woke up the next day and the account still didn't verify yet. I wondered, how can my Apple ID account actually verify faster so I can purchase the 'music maker jam' app?

How to transfer notes on the iPhone between different IMAP account?

After adding a new email account (call it gmail-2), my default note app account has been accidentally changed to the new gmail account(gmail-2). I did not realize it until after tons of notes to it. So I wonder is there any way that I can transfer the all notes in the gmail-2 to the old account(call it gamil-1) automatically without copying all of them by hand?

Can't delete local files, "Permission Denied"

There are several files on my Mac (OSX 10.9.5) that I can't delete.

I have tried from the GUI and from Terminal, but I always get "Permission Denied":

$ rm -f LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
rm: LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot: Permission denied

Even with "sudo":

$ sudo rm -f LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
Password:
rm: LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot: Permission denied

Here is a directory listing:

I am logged in as "Web", so it seems that I am the owner. It also seems that I have full permission (read, write, execute).

I tried looking for flags (such as "immutable") that might prevent deletion, but there don't seem to be any:

$ ls -leO
-rwxrwxrwx@ 1 Web staff - 83542 Jan 30 2013 LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
-rwxrwxrwx@ 1 Web staff - 82468 Jan 30 2013 LigatureSymbols-2.11.otf

drwxrwxrwx 2 Web staff - 16384 Mar 5 08:59 _notes

I tried removing the "immutable" flag, even though it doesn't seem to be set, but to no avail:

$ chflags nouchg LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
$ rm -f LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
rm: LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot: Permission denied

I notice some "extended attributes" (@) on the files, but nothing that would obviously prevent deletion:

com.apple.ResourceFork 286
com.apple.quarantine 42
com.apple.metadata:kMDItemWhereFroms 137

And I can't seem to remove these attributes either:

$ xattr -c LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
xattr: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot'

Not even with "sudo":

$ sudo xattr -c LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot
Password:
xattr: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'LigatureSymbols-2.11.eot'

How can I remove these files from my system?

How to search for .zip files instead of all compressed files? [duplicate]

This question already has an answer here:

How do you search for a file of a specific type in OS X Yosemite? I cannot seem to find any instructions on how to do this.

In the Finder search I enter: kind:zip

But it returns all compressed files. I only want zip files - so this AD post does not help me much. All the solutions either use bash, or I cannot find the options they refer to.

Configure terminal dimensions to show as Lines x Columns

In my terminal, when I ask to show Dimensions (profiles -> window -> dimensions), it shows the dimensions as Columns x Lines, but when I use resize -s 25 200, I am actually resizing as Lines x Columns, so I would like the dimensions to display in the same way.

Is there any way to get the Dimensions in the title to appear in the same order as the parameters in resize -s?

Migrate Bluetooth settings to a different Mac

Context: I am in the process of migrating from an old MBP (10.6.8) to a newer MBR (10.9). This is not an in-place upgrade or Time Machine restore; it is a manual migration to new hardware, new OS, new disk partitioning, and new user accounts.

Specifics: My old MBP has a significant number of saved/remembered Bluetooth devices that it has paired with in various times and places. I would like to find a way to export these settings from my old MBP and then import them to my new MBR. I do not want to have to go through the manual pairing process for every device again. (yuk!)

  • The more automated the process is, the better.

  • The more general the process is, the better. (Both for my own future migrations and for others.)

  • If there's a way to see these settings in plaintext, extra points because it's a learning opportunity!

Music 'On this iPhone' not actually on my iPhone?

So I plug my iPhone in, and click on 'iPhone' in the top right corner. And click 'On this iPhone' and select Music. It shows 20 songs, 7 of which are on my phone. I have tried syncing but nothing works. I would like all these 20 songs on my phone. Does anyone know how I can do this?

Why doesn't the "Go to the folder" dialog in Finder not allow paste?

When opening a file in almost any given application, it is very useful to me to be able to quickly navigate to a path that I have copied from elsewhere and is now in my clipboard.

My understanding is that the quickest way to do so is to press +shift+G

The problem is that the dialog that appears doesn't allow the select all function +A nor paste +V so it takes more time to paste as I'm forced to use the mouse rather than key shortcuts.

Is there a way to modify this behaviour, or even a better workflow to achieve the same goal?

Using Shazam to pick up audio over internal soundcard / headphones

I recently discovered Shazam has an app for mac, it seems it works by listening on the built in mic (or any mic presumably).

I wondered if there was a way I could get it to listen to the soundcard instead? I typically listen to radio streams over VLC, through headphones and thought it would be awesome to be able to use Shazam for those unknown tunes.

I found out about the Audio MIDI Setup.app which you can create aggregate devices, I thought maybe I could somehow forward the output into the mic- but I don't really understand it exactly truth be told.

Is there a way I could get this to work?

CANNOT DELETE FREE SPACE PARTITION and doesn't show in CS LIST

Firstly - I know this has been answered, but I am hoping for a more broken down answer, as I am not quite so technically minded, but I can follow instructions!

So in summary I have tried to install windows with bootcamp. Something failed and I ended up using Disk utility to try and remove the partition created by bootcamp.

Big, silly error I know!

I have followed the threads about backing up then booting to recovery mode (Cmd+R) and effectively wiping my SSD then re-installing Yosemite from internet recovery and then restore from my timemachine back up. (Seems like it will be a late night!)

(The thread I am working off:

Can not delete Free Space on iMac 5K: Partition doesn't appear in CS list)

However, in the description by @Klanomath, which seems to be a solution there are some blanks in my knwledge as to what exactly to do.... Which command lines do I use as an example.

Below is his solution:

"Thanks to @klanomath for a great answer. It's amazing to me that the only way to do this is such a destructive one. I will outline here a few things I learned and maybe a little bit of an abstraction of the problem.

The FusionDrive, as the name suggests, is actually two physical drives fused together. Occasionally when setting up BOOTCAMP, the Windows partition is corrupted or otherwise screwed up. Of the three times I tried to set up a Win8.1 BC drive two failed this way. The Windows partition is impossible to remove using the Disk Utility or the diskutil command in terminal. You can not add or alter the partition. DiskUtility UI can not alter these, even in Recovery Mode. What you need to do is, in a nutshell: Back up your system using Time Machine Boot into Recovery Mode using either Internet Recovery Launch TERMINAL under UTILITIES and, using the command line, delete the Logical and Physical partitions You then are left with an SSD (128GB) and an HDD (988GB) (adding up to 1TB in my case) You then re-fuse these two together using the command line and re left with an empty 1TB (in my case) drive Finally, you plug in your Time Machine back up and restore I don't know but none of the descriptions made it clear what was actually happening so I thought I'd provide this answer. The details in the above thread work well but when I finally clicked on what I was doing, I thought I'd share.

I find it crazy that OS X's Disk Utility a) screws this up so badly and b) can't fix it without a full reformatting!"

Here is my diskutil CS list:

DISKUTIL CS LIST

Here is my DISK UTIL LIST

DISKUTIL LIST

Here is my DISK UTILITY GUI

enter image description here

To summerise - I'd like to get a thickos guide to achieving the resolution, with the info I have provided.

I would also be interested to know if there is an alternative solution that doesn't require wiping my whole system. IF there are other command lines in terminal that may let me regain control of my hard drive and rejoin them.

I do not have a fusion drive, but I have a 500Gb SSD. YOu may also see "Nifty Drive" in the CS list, that is just a memory card.

Also my first time on a forum, so hello!

PDF form is missing information entered on a Windows PC

I have a 3rd party form which has a lot of fields to be filled in. I started entering the information on a Windows PC and saved it to Dropbox. When I open the form in Apple Preview on my OS X Yosemite machine the fields that I filed in are all blank! If I open it in Adobe Reader instead the information is present but when I save the file and open it in Windows again all of the previously saved information from my initial Windows session has gone. Please tell me how I can stop this happening as I use these forms on a regular basis and I need to edit them in Windows 7 and Mac OS X Yosemite.

Strange icon next to the dock

In the past few days I've seen a strange box coming up next to the first icon of the dock on some Macs, here at the office. The same box can be found in the cmd+tab menu.

This happens only on some of our Macs, which have the same version of OSX (10.10.2) and the same AppleID - but other Macs with the same OSX and AppleID don't seem to show the same behaviour.

Dock with From Mac

When the cursor is over the icon, it says "From Mac". The only 2 icons that have appeared there are Chrome and Mail. Clicking the Chrome icon opens a webpage on Chrome that someone else in the office opened recently, and that's a little bit creepy.

I tried to google it a while, without success... I'm sure it's an AppleID related issue, but I can't find a name for it, and hence I can't disable it.

What is that, and how can I get rid of it?

Image Compression Power point Presentation 2011

I am trying to make a presentation, and am facing a problem. I am facing picture compression issues . In addition to this saving problem, that pictures become worse quality every time I save the file, I am experiencing problems while trying to insert files. All pictures are inserted blurry. This applies for emf, png and, pdf.

I cannot find these advanced settings from Powerpoint for Mac 2011. How can I import/insert pictures to Powerpoint in their original quality? How can I control the picture compression?

I am using a Yosemite 10.10.2 version. Please help..!

MacBook Pro refuses to boot/recover, hangs at "white screen"

I am somewhat new to caring for Macs, but one has been left in my care and I have not been able to restore it to working order yet. Here are the symptoms:

  1. The MacBook Pro would hang with a "white screen" during the boot process. A bit of boot splash would show up, but the gray background would at some point just hang.

  2. Booting recovery mode did not work, as far as I remember.

  3. Boot from a Ubuntu 14.04.2 USB stick works, provided one attaches "nofb nomodeset" to the kernel commandline (though I put that one down to insufficient driver support). I have no idea whether or not these usually work out-of-the-box.

  4. Using parted from the aforementioned stick, I was able to see three partitions, one EFI Boot, one large main partition and one labeled Recovery. It seemed strange that the recovery was recoognized as HFS+, as I expected, but the "main" partition was not mountable and did not show a filesystem type.

  5. I also discovered that the drive in question was an OCZ Vertex3 256 GB, which I assume is not standard? The previous owner could have upgraded it.

  6. At this point, I decided to wipe the drive and try with a fresh installation. I removed the SSD from the MacBook, pulled a full disk image from my desktop just in case (which went without any read errors) and used hdparm to do an SATA enhanced erase, leaving me with a "fresh" disk. Then I put it back in.

  7. I started internet recovery, which loaded, showing me the global and everything. Afterwards, it rebooted, showing me the Apple Logo. But then I run into the original "white screen" again.

  8. I've tried resetting the NVRAM on boot, which succeeded because it turned the boot chime back on, but even then, running internet recovery again just causes it to hang on the white screen.

  9. There seems to be either very high CPU or GPU usage on the white screen, as the fans start wailing pretty intensely, also the body gets very hot in a very short time.

  10. For funsies, I installed Ubuntu onto the MacBook, which works (after smoothing over a few hiccups, fortunately I have lot more experience doing that).

  11. Recovery mode (Cmd+R) and Apple Hardware Test (D?) I have not been able to run. The former suffers the same white screen issue as described above.

Currently, my only vague guess is a GPU issue, that may be circumvented by Ubuntu by using the not completely feature complete open source radeon drivers. But that is a wild guess. Any input is appreciated.

throughout repairing, Apple provide a macbook?

I am thinking to give my macbook pro to apple service. Because on the right side, USB, hdmi and sd card reader are not working. I asked it to a stuff and she said me, it takes 3-5 days but i forgot to ask something..

I need a computer because I have to study and work on computer. 3-5 days are very important for me. Does any one know if i give my macbook to apple service, they provide me a laptop during repairing time ? If yes, I should pay or not? I still have guarantee..

Parallels Desktop for Mac: Stuck on "Preparing to configure your virtual machine..."

  1. I bought and installed Parallels Desktop on my Mac.

  2. I installed Parallels Transporter Agent on my Windows machine that runs Windows 7.

  3. I migrated my windows machine to my Mac, took about 36 hours. I can see on my mac desktop all of the files and folders that are on my windows desktop.

  4. After that was done, the virtual machine says "Upgrading Windows", and below that, per the title of this post, it says "Preparing to configure your virtual machine..."

  5. It chugs for about a minute, and the progress bar gets about 1/5 of the way.

  6. It stops and now the virtual machine screen is black, except for: "Windows. Click to Start." If I click on that, it goes back to step 4.

Alternative: On step 4 above, there is a little icon, and if I click on it, it asks me: "Are you sure you want to switch to the manual configuration mode for the "Windows" virtual machine? If I click "Yes" to that, something else happens each time! One of the following 3 things happens:

(a) I get a screen that says "Starting Windows". But after a few seconds, a get a blue screen, and it jumps back to step 4 above.

(b) I get a black screen that says at the bottom "Windows is loading files" that lasts a few seconds; then a progress bar at the bottom that also lasts a few seconds; then I get a blue screen (not the blue screen of death) with what looks like a little black dos popup which lasts just a second; then I get a little wizard popup entitled "Startup repair" which also lasts just a second; then another little popup that lasts less than a second, then back to step 6 above.

(c) I get a black screen entitled "Windows Error Recovery", which gives me two options:

(c.i) Launch Startup Repair (Recommended). Choosing this does the same as (b) above.

(c.ii) Start Windows Normally. Choosing this does the same as (a) above.

Why mac users aren't interested in using ramdisk?

Why using ramdisk is so hard on the mac world? (I don't wanna windows vs mac/m$ vs apple thing, just wanna know about it.)

On the windows platform, there're lot of free/commercial software out there and they have plenty of features.

Nowadays, I switched to mac and wanna use ramdisk for improve performance and prevent wear out, etc.

It seems limited or there're no good way/software unlikely windows platform.

There're a lot of tips on the web to create ramdisk osx via terminal, but it's not useful because it's intended to create ramdisk temporarily.

I think most basic ramdisk software features are

-create/load at start up -backup to real disk(no volatile) at shutdown

..

I wanna just basic things but it seems not easy on osx.

This seems best way among the freely available way that I've found on the web but it seems outdated.

http://ift.tt/1KrgVFj

and iRamDisk for commercial.

Please help me.

Any comments are welcome.

reasons, better way to use ramdisk or not, or... somthing else?

Thanks in advance.

How to create a link from the Apple Store which contains the configuration of a MacBook?

I configured a MacBook Pro in the Apple Online Store. Now I want to send the link to this particular configuration, but the link doesn't store the values in it.

How can I share this configuration with somebody?

So:

  1. I choose MacBook Pro in the Online Store

  2. Choose my model

  3. In the options overview, I add RAM and a faster processor

  4. I want to share this configuration now, but

  5. The link doesn't have the values in it

How do I change the path that is being searched for launching an application?

I am trying to launch the D programming language compiler DMD, but the terminal is giving the following error:

dmd: failed to launch executable at /Library/Compilers/dmd2/osx/bin/dmd

But there's not folder called dmd2 under /Library/Compilers.

I can launch the dmd compiler from this path /usr/bin/dmd, but I don't want to type this path every time I need to compile a source code file.

Is there a way that when I type dmd it launches /usr/bin/dmd, instead of trying to language a compiler under /Library/Compilers/dmd2/osx/bin/dmd?

Saving a pending print job as PDF

I printed an important receipt and quit Safari, only to learn the job never printed because we no longer own the network printer the computer was expecting to find. Thus, the only remaining copy of this information is in the print queue.

How do I salvage the information waiting to be printed so I can use it again?

Note: Dragging the enqueued item from the non-existant printer's queue to an existant printer's queue will print the item. I would like to know how to save the file waiting to be printed so it can be used again.

Application not responding, process missing

I have an odd issue. Sometimes it happens that application (happens almost always to NetBeans) is stuck in the dock with "Not Responding" - I can't open it, if I select "Force quit" id doesn't do anything (both from dock and from "Force quit" window.

The most annoying thing - there is no associated process that I could kill!

The only way to start application again is to restart the whole osx, which is PITA.

How can I force-force-quit of such application?

iPhone 6plus freezes and unresponsive

I have an iPhone 6 plus 128 gb and it is running iOS 8.1.3. The phone was never broken.

I noticed after the latest firmware update that it hangs and becomes unresponsive. Whenever that happens a black tent of shade covers the screen. The home button doesn't work the lock of the screen doesn't work. I always have to restart the phone.

Has anyone else experienced the same?
