Can I build my golf GPS to work on the lock screen like iMaps?

We are in the middle of building a new golf GPS app and would like to see if while using the app, if a users phone is locked can we tie the GPS part to the lock screen so all the user needs to do is wake up the phone to see the yardage. This is similar to how the iMap directions GPS works when you are driving.
