Mail.app on 10.10.1> Apple Mail 8.1> want combination of Classic layout +not

I want to set up my email view as what seems to be a combination of Classic and non classic views (as i use at work on 'another'brand of software!):

I would like the viewing pane of individual emails on the right (not the bottom) - such as is possible in the Not Classic view (Preferences>Viewing>uncheck 'Use classic layout')

BUT prefer the Classic Layout ability to see a one line preview list of all emails, (which shows more emails in the same space, rather than the subject line below the sender name taking up more space) along with option to utilise a columns view of from/ subject/date etc. (which allows for one-click choice of how to find emails, rather than two-click-plus-scroll as in Not Classic view.)

I hope that makes sense!? I hope its possible??

As a partial solution, (and not fully satisfactory really) a few other questions here suggest either setting up a toggle between Apple Mail 'Classic Layout' but either are for Lion (this is Yosemite). Would that apple script work the same with Yosemite?

OR, at very least, can I set up keyboard shortcuts to those columns (listing emails in order of from/subject/date) if i am in Not Classic layout?

thank you for any help anyone can offer.
