Play audio form Mac Book Pro while talking/skyping on phone?
Is there a way to play a music file from my mac book pro to the listener while I am on a skype-type program, and still be able to talk at the same time, with my apple earbuds/ecternal mic plugged in? I am thinking mix audio output into external mic input?
I have tried a 4 pole splitter between apple's mic/earbuds and mvp audio jack with no luck. The audio system preferences no longer recognize mic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Export specefic iTunes music information to spreadsheet?
Ok so I really need help with this one. I'm doing a school project and I need to be able to chart the Date Added, Date Last Played, and # of plays.
Does anyone know of a way to export/copy/retrieve that information from itunes? Past answers suggested that you could simply select and copy paste any information visible straight from itunes, but it no longer seems to function like that.
I also saw someone wrote a quick ruby script to do something similar (http://ift.tt/1aF97Qn ) which I'm sure I could modify easily enough...but I have no idea how to use it, so an answer to this would work just as well as above!
I really just don't want to manually enter the info for 814 songs... please help!
Why is cp command 4 times slower than copying in Finder in OS X 10.6?
I accidentally stumbled upon this issue:
Copying a 119 MB zip file took 4 times longer in Terminal (cp) than in Finder!
I copied a file of 119 MB size in Terminal with time cp file.zip file2.zip
and it took about 20 seconds.
As this seemed quite slow to me, I went to the Finder, selected the same file and hit Cmd-D
(duplicate) and it took less than 5 seconds to create the copy, that is only 25% of the time it took with cp!
Is there an explanation for it - might this be systematic?
Used Hard-/Software
- MacBook 13" white (2007)
- OS X 10.6.8
- Internal hard disk WDC WD10JPVT-00A1YT0
it really seems to be a cache issue: I tried the opposite order with another file and copied it first in Finder and then in Terminal, and in this case also the second copying was much faster.

Can iBeacon range/region monitoring trigger "dynamic"/data-based notification?
I've looked everywhere (and am a Java/web developer so can't try testing in Xcode myself) but don't know the answer to;
Can an iBeacon range and/or region event (for an iOS app that is not running in the foreground) somehow have a "dynamic" notification send to that iOS device (i.e. a notification text that is not hard coded in the app but rather comes from a server)?
An example use case that everyone can relate to is that your local super market implements beacons and that as you walk pass the milk section you get a notification saying "Milk half price for the next half hour" (because the "use-by" date is near).
I know I can do local notification with static text (i.e. "welcome to the store") but unsure if I can so something more dynamic.
Python script executable opened by text editor
I have a simple hello world script that i want to turn into an executable. The problem is that even though i went through the steps of declaring the path of the python interpreter in the first list of the code and made it executable via chmod, it does not run as an executable. Instead when i click it my text editor opens up the file. This sounds really stupid but ive tried everything. ./hello.py prints Hello world in the terminal. Ive tried changing the file to open with the terminal instead but its greyed out.
#!/usr/bin/python
print 'Hello world'
What i typed in the terminal:
chmod +x hello.py
./hello.py
Output:
Hello world
Problem: double clicking the script opens text editor instead of running as an executable
What i tried:
Changing what the file uses to open itself by having it default to the terminal but OSX grays out that option.
How to back out of an app on iPhone?
So this is my first iPhone and I'm used to Android. On Android, if I click some link or something that opens another app, I can click the back button and go back to where I was, even across apps. Example: I'm using Chrome and click a video link, link opens the YouTube app, when I'm finished, I just click the back button and now I'm back in Chrome exactly where I was when I clicked the link.
Can't find this function on my iPhone yet. I've tried swiping but all I can do is click the home button to back out of the current place and reclick the app where I was.
Problem reinstalling PostgreSQL after installing Parallels
I’m trying to reinstall postgresql on my mac (yosemite) after installing parallels seemed to mess up permissions to directories that psql and homebrew need. I was able to force-uninstall psql, but when running brew doctor before reinstalling I get:
Warning: The /usr/local directory is not writable.
Even if this directory was writable when you installed Homebrew, other
software may change permissions on this directory. Some versions of the
"InstantOn" component of Airfoil are known to do this.
You should probably change the ownership and permissions of /usr/local
back to your user account.
The other Warnings I get apply to /usr/local subdirectories.
I see many similar threads that recommend changing ownership via:
sudo chown $(whoami) /usr/local/
...but my question is, if I use this to change ownership & permissions back to my user account will this mess up Parallels?
Sorry, new to this, don’t quite understand the relationship between parallels & /usr/local/

iPhone 4s and iOS 8.1.3
After hesitating and then doing the latest update, my 4s has many problems!! texting takes me about 4 times as long to do, as the device lags and then tries to catch up really fast and misses words or misspells other words and I'm constantly fixing stuff... SIRI comes on when I change my phone from vertical to horizontal and visa versa... different apps will shut down before they even start, or will start and shut down in the middle of using the app.... also, my phone is no longer compatible with my car via USB. Is there any way to fix this?? My phone has been backed up on iTunes post upgrade, and other than this 'issue', there is nothing wrong with my phone! it's in MINT condition, and I've had it going on 4 years now.... I don't want to upgrade (which is why I've taken such good care of this phone)... HELP!!!!
Is enabling rw in /etc/fstab for an NTFS volume risky?
I've followed this tutorial:
I'm not familiar with Mac OS X's NTFS support, having used only ntfs-3g in Linux.
Does making the volume writable with OS X's native driver via fstab pose any risk to my data or volume?

USB Drive not recognized by Mac OS X Yosemite
I have a USB drive I setup as bootable with a few different Linux distros using Multiboot in Windows.
This afternoon I plugged it into my Mac to look at the list of ISOs on it. I then ejected it from the Mac.
I plugged it into a Windows PC and booted off of it and booted Linux, did a few things and then rebooted the PC into Windows with the USB drive still in. Shortly after I booted Windows I unplugged the USB drive (without doing Safely Remove in Windows)
I plugged it back into my Mac and I get the error: The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. With the options to Initialize, Ignore or Eject. If I ignore I can see it as /dev/disk2 in terminal.
diskutil repairDisk /dev/disk2 gives the error:
Unable to repair this whole disk: A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required (-69773)
I have a Windows 8.1 VM on my Mac with VMware Fusion, if I load the USB drive in Windows in VMware it shows up just fine.
Any idea what could have happened or how to fix?
My wireless network connection gets lost frequently

window focus problem after mouse click with xquartz on mavericks
I recently started having a problem on my iMac with xquartz 2.7.7 on os x 10.9.5 involving X11 window focus.
Whenever I click on an X11 window, active or inactive, after a few seconds that window loses focus, then the mouse pointer briefly becomes the spinning color wheel, and focus returns. It's an annoying delay approaching 10 seconds, for what used to be nearly instantaneous
I've tried using a different mouse, a different keyboard, re-installing xquartz, and disabling a dashboard client with error messages in the logs, but nothing has helped.
Several other Macs I use do not have this problem with xquartz, with either os x 10.8.x or 10.9.x
I haven't had much luck with web searches on this topic so far, just a couple false trails for similar but not identical problems.

Make alias take icon of the .app it points to
- I have a
blah.app
, and on desktop there is an alias to this app - I went to
http://ift.tt/18wdFYy
and replace the icon with my icon, same name - I went to
blah.app/
and created a new folder next to theblah.app/Contents
folder, this made theblah.app
icon update to show mine however the icon of the alias file on desktop did not change.
Any ideas on why this is so? I know I can drag the icon over this alias file, but im trying to figure out whats going on here, why isn't taking my icon? :(
Thanks!
Why don't images in iCloud appear as available in iMovie on IOS?
I want to create a full video on IOS device but use a predetermined asset for an intro screen. I have added a JPEG to my iCloud account formatted to video screen size. I then created a movie project on my phone (6 plus) and clicked "add media " icon, then browse to iCloud and I can see the file, but it isn't selectable. So what am I missing? Is it a file format issue?
IOS 8 Refresh to load desktop site
I have noted that to view a desktop site in iOS 8 ( such a ask different) that you need to refresh the page after you clicked on 'request desktop page'. The question is why do we need to refresh the page when the loading bar move after you click request desktop site?
Why would some messages not show attachments?
Since moving to Yosemite and Mail.app 8.2 I've noticed that some messages show attachments in the message list and some, well, don't. The loss of this little icon seems to impact those messages searches in which I'm looking for messages from a person with attachments. I've attached a screenshot that shows a message that recognizes there are attachments and one that clearly doesn't:
Why might this be occurring and, more importantly, what can I do to remedy it?
Most of this mail is coming through Exchange with Outlook for Windows as a source at times. I don't know if this is a Windows problem, Outlook problem, Exchange problem, or Mail problem. But since I've only noticed it since moving to 8.2 I'm assuming it is a Mail problem.
Yosemite was installed as an upgrade on top of Mavericks. Haven't tried a fresh install even though I've had other problems with Mail in the form of odd stalls while Mail is trying to fetch data off the Exchange server. Let's deal with the attachment problem first.
Macbook Pro low battery warning to instant recharge
My Macbook Pro (Mid 2012, OSX 10.10.2) sometimes gives the Low Battery
warning, then immediately after dismissing the notification the battery pops back up to about 25% battery, still showing a red battery icon.
It is above 20% but is still red.
What could have caused this, is it an error in Yosemite OS X, or is it a reserve battery power I did not know about, or is it something completely different

How do you emulate an AirPort Base Station with a Windows machine?
If possible, how do you make a Windows desktop (Win 8.1) machine act as an Apple AirPort Base Station so that I can use Time Capsule on my MBP to backup to a drive on my Windows machine?
Bonus points for how to use an offsite drive like my Google Drive or OneDrive.
"taskgated: no signiture for..." with GCC Compiled Exuctables
I recently upgraded to OS X 10.10 and now I am finding that executables that I coded myself and build with GCC immediately print Killed: 9
and then quit. In my console I am seeing the following message:
taskgated[73]: no signature for pid=66146 (cannot make code: UNIX[No such process])
I also recently installed GCC through Homebrew, as gfortran was not one of the default compilers in my version of xCode. I'm not sure if this is related to the issue or not.
I have experienced the issue now with executables compiled with both gfortran and G++. A simple C++ "hello world" program demonstrating my issue is below.
$ cat test.cpp
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int main()
{
cout << "hello world" << endl;
return 0;
}
$ g++ -c test.cpp
$ test.o
Killed: 9
What do I need to do to be able to run these executables?
Mac terminal stop hard drive from spinning
Like the title says. Can I stop Hard Disk Drives from spinning through terminal.
The reason why I want to know is because I have my Mac to backup at midnight however I do not want my HDD to be spinning all the time. I would also like a way to spin it back up again.
Also this is a External Drive.
Thanks in advanced.

Saving a pending print job as PDF
I sent a confirmation page from Safari to the printer and quit Safari, only to realize that the printer does not actually exist. The only remaining copy of this information is in the print queue.
How do I salvage the information waiting to be printed so I can use it again?
Re-routing the print job to an extant printer would be nice, though more generally I would like to know how to save the file waiting to be printed so it can be used again.
MacBook Pro upgrade to SSD migrating OSX and Bootcamp partitions
I wasn't able to find the info I needed here or on Apple's own forums or via Google, so here goes.
I have a MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 model with a 500 GB internal hard disk drive (non-SSD). Currently running OSX 10.8.5 on a 300 GB partition, and Windows 7 via Bootcamp on a 200 GB partition. OSX is under backup via TimeMachine, Windows is backed up manually on an external hard drive as a simple copy.
I would like to replace the internal hard disk drive with an Intel DC S3500 480GB SSD. Changing the drive itself should be easy via a guide I've found. But... instead of the 300GB/200GB partitions I currently have, I'm aiming for 400GB/80GB partitions on the SSD. The Windows 7 Bootcamp partition I currently have uses only 70GB, so I'd like it to occupy the 80GB partition on the SSD. Once I'm on the SSD, I will upgrade OSX to Yosemite.
Question: I would like to migrate both my current installation of OSX and the installation of Windows to their respective new (differently sized) partitions on the SSD, without having to re-install the OS'es. What steps do I need to take to make this work? (Any pitfalls?)
Backup Mac with terminal
I would like to backup my Mac using terminal along with viewing the output.
I have tried tmutil startbackup --block --auto
however it does not seem to work, however if I do tmutil start backup
then it will.
I would prefer if it would not move onto the next command if the backup has not finished.
Sorry if this belongs to SO. I have posted it here since it is specific with Apple Macs.
Can I generate a clickable link to local file using relative path like "file:///~"
This is the background:
in my company, we use Google Drive and often have to tell each other the path to a particular file. Paths are long as we use a lot of nested folders, so it's pretty boring and time consuming to browse through all that.
Now, in my previous company, we used a central afp server, so the path was common to everyone, therefore I had created an applescript script that could get the absolute afp path to the file, people pasted that path in a mail or chat and the end user could click on that path which automatically became a link and the finder would open, selecting that particular file or folder that the link led to.
The reason I can't use the exact same script is that Google Drive folder is in the user home folder. So if user's name is Foo the path will be file:///Users/Foo/Google Drive
, while for user Bar the path will be file:///Users/Bar/Google Drive
Clearly the path generated from user Foo won't work for user Bar
Since, at least in the terminal, the path to file:///Users/username
equals to ~
, I made my script generate links like file:///~/Google Drive/pathToFolder
, but they do not work :( Clicking on such a link will open the finder, but won't select the right file or folder
This is driving me crazy because it looks like it should work but it simply doesn't... is there any other syntax I should try? Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
Only the spinning beachball when I try to open anything from spotlight
I can't start any programs or open any document from the spotlight since yesterday.
It finds the right program / document, but when I press enter I only get the spinning beachball for about 40 seconds and then spotlight closes without opening anything.
Any ideas?
iPad won't turn on after a complete battery drain
I forgot to plug in my iPad after the critical battery warning and it went some minutes following the warning. I was not worried because same thing had happened a few times before and iPad was perfectly okay after charging it. However, this time I remember seeing a flash of blue screen immediately after it went black. Then, I plugged it in an waited for a while and tried starting it. Ever since, it fails to start hanging on the apple logo with white background screen. I tried to connect to my Mac but nothing showed up in iTunes. I am worried now. What could have happened? my iPad is out of warranty. It is an iPad mini retina.
Thanks in advance.
Can humidity affect the display on my Macbook Air
For the second time now on our annual trip to the Keys, my 2012 MacBook Air's display has gone blank and only flickers on occasionally. Same thing happened last year. The problem disappeared completely on our return to Michigan and had not resurfaced again until I returned to Florida. Another possibility is higher voltage here? Could it be a bad charger?
Can MacBooks backup when in hibernation mode?
Can MacBooks backup when in hibernation mode?
The reason why I am asking this is because I want to backup my MacBook air at midnight however I am not sure if my computer will be in hibernation mode when its midnight. I want to backup at midnight because I cannot back it up when using it during the day.

How to use Sonos as wireless speakers for your Mac's sound output
Here's a solution I just tried, and found that actually works! I've listed it as an idea because I would assume that SONOS might be able to offer a similar solution, unless (of course) licensing issues prevent them from doing it without permission from Apple. (Don't know... just speculating here).
This software solution provides an "airplay" driver on your mac that points to one of your Sonos players. Once it's installed, you use it with three simple steps.
Step 1) Open a terminal prompt (command prompt) and type airsonos. This starts the driver. Don't close the session. It's OK to minimize the window.
Step 2) You use the Mac's "System Preferences..." , "Sound" to select the sonos as the output for your sound. Now, play some music on your mac, and turn up the volume, and the sound comes out of your Sonos" instead of your Mac. No wires. No hassle.
Step 3) Grin from ear to ear as any and all Mac sound streams wirelessly to your Sonos!
HERE'S HOW TO INSTALL THE DRIVERS, PLUS LINKS TO WHERE I FOUND THE SOLUTION.
(I can't take credit for creating it, but I'm so happy to have found it... thank you Stephen! ... that I'm willing to share it far and wide!)
airsonos a Node.js application, and it's free!
You need to install the right version of Node.js (it's an older version),
and then you need to use npm (the Node package manager) which will download, compile and i
install airsonos. It's all pretty easy. You don't need more than basic computer skills to get it done.
I found info here:
and installation instructions here:
http://ift.tt/1Angwsk
IMPORTANT NOTE: It states it requires Node.js version v0.10.33 or greater.
I tried it with the current release of Node.js (v0.12.xx) and it wouldn't compile.
When I downloaded and installed Node.js version v0.10.33, and then tried to install it everything worked!
Here are the brief instructions:
Step 1)
Download Node.js v0.10.33 from here:
or use google to find it.
Step 2) Run the install (node-v0.10.33.pkg) to install Node.js
Step 3) Open a terminal prompt, and at the command line type:
sudo npm install airsonos -g
This will cause the npm (the node package manager) to download, compile and install airsonos and the packages it requires. It took about 5 or 10 minutes to complete.
Now it's installed!
To use it, it's two simple steps:
*** First) open a terminal and at the command prompt type:
airsonos
./
You should see output similar to:
MacBook-Pro:~user$ airsonos
Searching for Sonos devices on network...
Setting up AirSonos for Basement {192.168.0.10:1400}
Setting up AirSonos for Office {192.168.0.20:1400}
On my machine these messages were repeated several times.
LEAVE THE TERMINAL WINDOW. Don't close it, or kill the airsonos app.
It IS OK to minimize the window.
*** Second)
Go to system preferences... (under the apple menu), select "Sound" and for "Output" create one of the airsonos outputs. For instance, in my situation I selected .
"Office (AirSonos) AirPlay".
Now play some music on your mac, turn up the volume on your mac, and listen the music come out through Sonos!
This is awesome. You can now send steaming services to Sonos, you can output your itunes music to sonos. Want to hear a playlist of songs from youtube... done, amazon music prime... it now works!, etc, etc.
Many, many thanks to Stephen for creating this and sharing the info.
I didn't create any of this, I'm just sharing the information since I've wanted this feature for so long, I'm happy to finally find a quality solution that works!

Why do I see stale files on my MacBook Air 13 when I use 'Android File Transfer'?
Why do I see stale files on my MacBook Air 13 when I use 'Android File Transfer'?
I have a LG Volt (LGLS740) running Android 4.4.2. The MacBook Air 13 is running OS X Yosemite (10.10.2) & has app 'Android File Transfer' installed (Version 1.0.50.2266). When I connect the Android phone to the MacBook Air 13 via the USB cable I see stale files in 'Internal storage/Android/data/com.StyleTap.StyleTap/import' that I don't see when I use app 'File Manager' on the Android phone. I am using the Palm emulator from 'www.styletap.com', but I don't believe that the stale files are specific to this usage.
Is there any way to let apple know shellshock patch download is broken?
I am trying to patch Lion (10.7.5). According to shellshocker.net, I am vulnerable to 6 out of 7 possible exploits. The download link for Lion is broken: http://ift.tt/1N2MhAW leads me to the following empty file: http://ift.tt/1rpyfRc
Is there anyway to report this without paying 30 for tech support? Is there anyway to patch shellshock for Lion, without having to build from source?
Verify disk reports error, recovery os repair + fsck says disk is fine
After my time machine backups got stuck to finish at some point, I decided to do a disk check using disk util.
I'm getting the following output while running "verify disk":
The volume 86A26AC7-8D39-4917-AF77-2F25314852EA appears to be OK Storage system check exit code is 0. Verifying file system. Using live mode. Performing live verification. Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Checking catalog hierarchy. (It should be 28985392 instead of 28450688) File system check exit code is 8. Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
Unfortunately restarting into recovery mode and running "repair disk" doesn't find any errors at all. I've even booted into single user mode for running fsck also without any results - disk was reported as OK. It seems that the FS error only happens after regular booting up.
Disk is a SSD in MBP on Yosemite. Seems to work fine beside this error and stuck backups.
Any ideas to to fix this FS issue?

ReportPanic on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
I run OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on a first generation 27" iMac. Over night the computer apparently crashed.
All applications I had open had gotten all jumbled in the restart so I pressed the F3
to see every thing and saw the following pop-up message:
I've seen these kind of messages before, but I had never seen them labeled as "ReportPanic".
Can someone explain what this is and what it means? The label gives me pause. Is this a real OS X message or a possible hack?

Error / Hang Installing Yosemite and Mavericks on Mac Pro SSD
Having had a hard drive failure, I'm attempting a clean install of Yosemite on a 2010 Mac Pro, with a brand new 120GB OWC SSD.
I've tried using a Yosemite boot disk, using both an external hard drive and a USB memory stick, which both suffered the same symptoms, and now I'm seeing something similar with an old Mavericks USB memory stick, which I believe has worked before.
The problem I had with the Yosemite install was that it would start the installation, I'd accept the terms, and it would get to the "Preparing to install" screen. It would then count down from 8 minutes, stop at "1 second remaining" for about 10 minutes, then "0 seconds remaining" for about another 10 minutes, before finally presenting the error message, "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."
With Mavericks, I'm seeing the same thing up to the "0 seconds remaining" problem, but then it just hangs - on the last attempt I waited about an hour, and I'm in the middle of a second attempt now.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, and checked the date in the terminal which is correct (albeit the wrong time zone, but I'm guessing that's not important).
The only entry in the Installer system log is:
localhost Install OS X Mavericks[387]: Can not connect to /var/run/systemkeychaincheck.socket: No such file or directory
Any advice much appreciated!

Does Spotlight index dotfiles (OS X Yosemite)?
I want to create an Alfred workflow with some dotfiles (i.e. zsh config files).
Long story short, in Alfred, I only can play with files indexed by Spotlight. Apparently, Spotlight doesn't index dotfiles as I can't get any dotfile in my Alfred results.
Any of my Spotlight setting that would force Spotlight to index dotfiles index is checked.
So, my question is there a way to force Spotlight to index dotfiles, dotfiles of a specific directory, a specific dotfile?
Can't download google chrome on my mac!
I'm on the page http://ift.tt/1wpscdN
There is a large blue button "Download Chrome" and below it "For Mac OS X 10.6 or later".
I click on the button. Result: the whole screen goes gray, and all links are de-activated, like a "lightbox" effect, and nothing else?!

Assistive Access when script is launched by agent
Problem
Applescript run by osascript is not allowed Assistive Access when launched by agent (~/Library/LaunchAgents
). Although it works when run from Applescript editor or commandline directly (using osascript).
Situation
The applescript performs several GUI tasks for batch printing and is run twice daily. Therefore it needs permission to access Assistive Devices and is launched by an agent.
The script runs as expected when launched from:
- Applescript Editor
- osascript commandline (non-sudo)
When launched by Agent it returns:
/location/of/my.scpt: execution error: System Events got an error: osascript does not have access to assistive devices. (-25211)
(Message translated from Dutch by me.)
This led me to believe the issue is with osascript, but like I stated above, it works fine when entered directly from command-line using: osascript /location/of/my.scpt
.
Also, based on these two posts I edited the /Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db
SQLite database and when I check the 'access' table it shows:
$ sudo sqlite3 /Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db "SELECT * FROM access"
Password:
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.logitech.gaming|0|1|0|??
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.valvesoftware.steam|0|1|0|??
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.blizzard.starcraft2|0|0|1|
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.apple.AccessibilityInspector|0|1|0|??
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.apple.ScriptEditor2|0|1|0|??
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.apple.Terminal|0|1|0|??
kTCCServiceAccessibility|/usr/bin/osascript|1|1|1|
kTCCServiceAccessibility|com.my.label|0|1|1|
kTCCServiceAccessibility|/osascript|1|0|1|
As you can see osascript is allowed access and I also added my agent's .plist for good measure.
Possible Cause?
The only thing I can think of is that, for some reason, the script is run by a 'different user' when launched by an Agent and therefore has different assistive devices allowed? Seems unlikely, however, as the TCC.db does not seem to be user-specific and the agent is located in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
.
Help, anyone?
