SMartphone text to non-smartphone?

ok, so my friend in Canada has a smart phone, but it isn't activated, so she can only get apps. I don't have anything that can get apps but can still text. is there a way for her to text from her phone to my phone, without her having to activate hers, or me having to get a smartphone? I have an old LG cosmos and she has a Samsung Ace.

4 gb video file not visible in PC

I recorded a video of 4.5 GB and able to play on Ipad 8.1,3. but when I tranfer it to PC with feem it is not playing and when I browse videos on PC with data cable , that 4 GB file is not present.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask: but i have a Win7 machine and i want to save apartment space by foregoing the monitor, and use my existing MacBook Air screen as a temporary monitor when i reboot my Win7 machine.

Only sync photos to icloud when plugged in?

I noticed that on icloud.com, when i add a reminder, it automatically gets sync on my phone when i turn on my wifi. Which is great and i really love that feature.

But that got me thinking, are my photos being synced too? Wouldnt that consume lots of data uploading it and also the battery?

Also, since im already here, why cant i access photos on the icloud.com website? Only on the windows explorer

After a couple years of using my macbook pro, performance has deteriorated with each update to OSX. I've tried a few things to improve it, and with no results, I decided to get a 128G SSD and a drive caddy for the CD drive, and install a clean install on it.

Using the SSD as my main boot drive, and wahla, great experience. Now, I just need my old stuff. Migration assistant isn't ideal because:

A) the SSD is 128G, and the HDD is 500G. Lots of applications.

B) I don't want to blindly copy over batches of filesystems, mostly because it's likely that I will copy over whatever caused performance deterioration in the first place (most likely my tinkering).

So, my questions are:

What's the best way to access and organize the files and applications on my HDD?

Can I just copy over specific applications? How do I copy their settings?

Are there things I should remove from the HDD? Like the old User Account?

My old phone is completely unable to access. I never signed in to a Google account while playing, got to level six. Need someone, to help me access my old village.

Brand new 15in retina

I bought the mac then hooked up Time Machine and started restore to Mac HD. All was fine until the end when the backup from on 6 minutes to go for a couple of hours. No progress at all. So after restart I go back to set up. But now I can't see the Mac HD. I go into recovery mode and opened Disk Utility. It shows MacHD but no partition. (i.e in the left panel there is Macintosh HD to indicate the drive but no sub item indicating the partition Mac HD. Verify disk and Repair disk say it's ok. But when I click partition, all the items are uneditable. There's no resize tab But one blue section of 499GB, and I cannot edit any of the other fields as they are all greyed out. This means I'm constantly stuck in recovery mode and can't format or erase the main hard drive. Any ideas what to do?

Filename and editing permissions are gone from Finder Tags

I just added two pdf files in a Tag group and I the filename is blank even though in a normal finder windows I can see it.

An other problem is that if I select the file and I press enter to edit the name, nothing happens.

I tried to add extra files on the group and it seams to work fine with everything else.

I also tried to change the Tag group of the file, but same problem.

I checked the permissions and are totally fine. Any ideas?

AU Lab lost windows, cannot open old settings nor save new ones

AU Lab lost windows, cannot open old settings nor save new ones I installed Soundflower 2.0b2 - which in contrary to 1.6.6 seems to work. AU Lab worked fine for two days, when I clicked accidentally on the close button all windows disappeared and cannot be revived - no new installation, cleaning PRam or other version helps. I can open the old settings, but nothing changes. If I create a new document, same thing happens - no windows and the menu is mainly greyed out. The only parts of the menu in black are: File/New, Open, Open Recent Window/Show Strip Library Debug/Clear AU Info Cache Help

Super high network usage OS X Yosemite

I've been monitoring Activity Monitor on my Macbook air running Yosemite for a month or two now and I've noticed my network data usage is pretty high (this is what I think). I usually reboot my computer about once a week which resets the Activity Monitor data. The highest I have ever seen for Data received is over 100 GB and for Data sent is over 170 GB. Also, for both packets sent and received it is normally around 50,000,000 but has gotten around 150,000,000 or higher. I never download any more than 5 GB a week and lots of web browsing. It does not affect my use on the computer at all. So my question out of curiosity is, is this normal for a single weeks usage? If not, what can I do about it?

How long Before Apples FileVault AES 128 Encryption Will Be Cracked?

Hey everyone so I have an encrypted hard drive that has countless memories on it and I do not know the password to it. When I was encrypting I retyped the password twice then clicked that stupid key for Apples Password Assistant then pressing memorable I did not realize it changed my entire password. It didn't even ask me to verify it. So I know it is 12 characters and chosen from Apples Password Assistant under Memorable meaning it consists of a word followed by a 1-3 digit number a symbol and a word again. I may try to brute force it but don't think its even worth trying. I cannot erase it due to how precious the memories are.

My question is in the future will it ever be possible for me to crack it in my lifetime. It is not AES 256 so I think there is a higher possibility of having it cracked in the future but how long before you think?

Again I am not asking for brute force so don't say 128 billion years or something ridiculous.

My mail messages saved to folders are not there?

I have many folders created to save incoming mail. I have set preferences so that the folders "NEVER" empty. When I go back to look at something, the messages are no longer there. This is a relatively recent phenomena (Past six months or so), it didn't do this before that. I have tried to enter mail and retrieve them from Time Machine but that didn't work. Time Machine created a folder in the tree, but there was nothing in the folder. What does anyone think is going on and how can I fix this problem?

Syntax highlighting in Mac OS X Yosemite Terminal

I would like to know what is the method to do syntax highlighting in terminal. I am trying to avoid my mouse to become more of a keyboard junkie so I am working more on Terminal and trying to learn vim. When I decide to look back at some previous commands on terminal, its tough to read. So I was hoping that a syntax highlighting will differentiate the line I enter to that from the machine. I did see a previous post at Can I make my Mac OS X Terminal color items according to syntax, like the Ubuntu terminal?. But as it was asked in 2011, I am hoping the process has got easier.

Mac OSX iMessage Won't Send to numbers

On my mac I used to be able to send to other mobile devices from my iMessage but now it won't send to phone numbers. It sends to iMessages and emails but not non-iOS phone numbers.

I've tried to delete the iCloud account from my Mac and re-enable it.

I've also done the same on my phone.

Weird problem with a macbook pro won't boot up after putting bottom screws

I'm kind new in this world of apple, and I have a intel's mac that suddently fail the hard drive, so I make a MAC OSX USB, and realize that my old Hard drive was died (Disk utility didn't detect it). I Bought a new HDD (500GB Toshiba) I format and Initialize the hard drive in a PC (because without that the MAC OSX Installation doesn't recognize it) and for the first time i putted all the screws like mint installation, for my surprice the HDD was not recognized, get it out and checked in a PC, the HDD still working perfect, reformat and re initializes the GTP.

For the second time just for test i leave the screws and strech the flex to the outside of the mac (for mantain the hard drive in the outside) and boot the Installation USB... Works!, I installed the OSX and everithing fine until I putted everything in place (Hard drive screws, bottom cover and screws etc) turned on MAC and Hangs on Apple Logo, I restared it, and then the circle with a slash. Booted from usb and Disk Utility won't format the MAC OSX partition with an "Couldn't be unmounted" error.

For the tirth time I reformated the hard drive, reinitialized the GTP with the pc, I putted the hard drive Inside with its screws and this time put the bottom cover but without screws, everything works perfect, after installation navigate on internet login on Store etc, everything good. I restared several times to make sure its booting correctly, and it did. So I flipped over to put the bottom cover screws (Mac still ON), I putted just two of them (just for testing) one of the long in te back middle, and the short one in middle front. When I was in the middle of turned it over I clearly heard the HDD was sudendly turned off (like when you push the power button for several seconds), but the mac still on and apparently working, I restared and then hangs on Apple's Logo. Maybe I wrong about the screws

Anyone have and idea what could be making this fail? Any clue is welcome

Ever since I can remember A-ha's Take on Me has been the song in my library that plays when nothing else is 'next up'. I guess it just sorts alphabetically by artist name anyone know how to change that to start playing the most recently added instead

App Store receipt email, forwarded as attachment, won't open

New user--just switched from Windows to an iMac running Yosemite. In the Mail app I use 'Forward as Attachment' a lot, with no problems.

However, I just forwarded an App Store email receipt as an attachment, and the recipient couldn't open the receipt. OS X identifies the attachment as a generic document (rather than an email) and can't find an app to open it. So far, this has only happened with the App Store receipt.

Is this problem likely due to something odd about the format of App Store receipts? If that's the case, I'll simply export those receipts to PDF and attach those files. Or is there something fundamental about attachments in Mail that I don't understand?

Connection speed over wireless

So I just got my Uverse internet jacked from 25MBits to 45. Soon as it was completed I did a speed test and it showed 45. Few days later it showed 20. I got on chat with ATT and the guy asked me to get a wired connection. I did that and sure enough it was 50.

Then I got curious. I have the last generation Extreme (n) in one place on my property and the newest one in another (ac). So I took the laptop and did a speedtest off the new one and got 50. Every time.

When I went back to the n, it was 50 for some reason. Today it's back to 20.

So I am deciding whether I should upgrade the extreme to ac or buy a dock and use a wired connection. The question here is whether there is a good explanation for these speed variations or is it just a function of older equipment/protocol?

Time Machine backup external disk not mounting anymore

I just installed Security Update 2015-002 (Version 1.0) on my MacBook. The latter has a 1.0TB internal hard drive, backed up onto a 2.0TB external USB2.0 3.5 inches hard drive. However, after mentioned update, when I start the computer, I have the following message:

The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer

And I have 3 options:

• Initialize...


• Ingore


• Eject

Clicking on Initialise... brings up Disk Utility, where the external Time Machine disk is now seen as "2 TB External RAID Media" unformatted...

I would like to avoid having to reinitialize it as I have many years of backup history on it. Strange what a "simple" security update can do. I tried First Aid and all of the buttons are greyed out. Impossible to use. I checked via Terminal in /Volumes and, alas, the disk is nowhere to be seen.

Here's what I tried:

• change the USB cable;


• tried to list the disk through Terminal: after having switched it on, it takes a good 20 minutes before it starts to spin and then it shows with the command diskutil list;


• downloaded Kext Utility 2.6.1 and ran the program, but it did not change anything;


• tried mounting and force mounting, but it did not work...

I found this page (a bit old though) which explains how to force mount a drive and here's what I did:

mkdir /Volumes/Backup
sudo mount -t hfs /dev/disk2 /Volumes/Backup

but it gave me a "mount_hfs: Invalid argument"

So I tried

sudo mount -t lfs /dev/disk2 /Volumes/Backup

and it gave me: "mount: exec /System/Library/Filesystems/http://ift.tt/1BIHQ9C for /Volumes/Backup: No such file or directory"

I checked and /Volumes/Backup exists...

I also tried this command (found on this site), but with the same Invalid argument:

sudo mount -t lfs -o rdonly /dev/disk2 /Volumes/Backup/

Finally I tried this (found here):

ps -ax | grep disk2

But it was useless...

How can I speed up the way OS X takes a window into full screen

I click the green circle at the top left of my screen so my window can go into full-screen mode.

Then I have to wait while my Mac performs some unnecessary animation to show me that I'm going into full-screen mode.

Can I eliminate that animation and go into full-screen instantly?

Why does this PDF does not appear properly in iOS?

This PDF uses the embedded fonts Graphik-Regular and Graphik-Medium. When viewed in various readers on OS X, Windows, Android, Acrobat, the font appears correctly. When viewed in iOS, the Graphik fonts appear as a Helvetica variant. Is this a problem with iOS, or a problem with the PDF? The PDF was created using the open source library libHaru.

2007 iMac Blured Screen of Death

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2007 iMac (intel based) I have tried to boot into the recovery HD, but it just continues with the boot as if I have never pressed cmd-r. It finally boots to a screen with the spinning beachball of death and a blurred background. I have reinstalled the ram twice, and have reset the NVRAM and PRAM.

Keynote exits presentation mode instead of advancing?

For some reason, while connected to a projector, when i use any of the obvious means to advance my slides (space bar, click track pad, right arrow key), the keynote presentation instead exits the presentation mode, remaining on the first slide. Why? How can I advance the slides?

Preventing Icon Previews on Network Volumes

Anyone that's tried to connect to a remote drive with a lot of images or movies on it knows that the Finder just falls to pieces when you do, as it hammers the server with requests to generate all the previews, usually crippling the connection into the bargain.

I can create .DS_Store files in specific folders on writable drives to disable icon previews, but this doesn't help with read-only drives, or with new folders that don't contain the file.

Is there any other way to prevent icon previews for the entire volume, without disabling them on the local machine? I mean, even when the "remote" drive is a NAS on a gigabit LAN, these previews just don't do usability any favours.

I am looking for a Safari extension that allows me to change any CSS on any website.

The things I want to do is change the white background to black and the black text to white, I also want the links to be green.

Is there a extension that allows me to do this?

This is the OS X safari and not iOS.

Reset "Connect as" under Yosemite / "connect to server"

I use AFP to connect to an (account on an) old MBP (Lion, off icloud) from my new MBP, latest Yosemite. I did not store the password in the keychain but it connects automatically. It says I am connected as my Apple Id (not as a registered user). If I click quick enough on "connect as", then the login windows pops up, prompting me to enter the user name and password. (The password field is blank.)

This does not happen from other accounts. I do not store the password and it does not connect automatically.

How can I reset this behavior? I do NOT want it to connect automatically.

Ipod music not showing on ipod

I download some music on my ipod that I have on my computer. I created a playlist and download about 25 songs thru itune and it took all of the music. Suddenly my ipod shows no list and no music. On my desktop I can see all music I tried to load in itune but not on my ipod. PS I tried to sync and no changes Any help please?

The new MacBook 12" has been launched and on the apple store the processor says

1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor (Turbo Boost up to 2.4GHz)

Does this mean that the Core-M processor will run at 2.4GHz or will it run at 1.1GHz?

If the Core-M does run at 1.1GHz would you be able to manual turbo boost it to 2.4GHz through some software?

Simple 3 line applescript - Error -128

I have a scenario where I'd like 2 separate applescripts.

The idea is super simple. 2 Applications, but only one runs at a time.

Example: Close application 1, launch application 2 (and vise versa)

Here are the 2 scripts I have:

A.) OpenSteam

tell application "Plex Home Theater" to quit
delay 5
tell application "Steam" to activate

B.) OpenPlex:

tell application "Steam" to quit
delay 5
tell application "Plex Home Theater" to activate

The script "OpenSteam" works perfectly fine. It does exactly what I want it to do. However, the same script in reverse (OpenPlex) does not seem to work.

Steam closes, but my script then gives me the following error *Note, Plex is not launched:

error "Steam got an error: User canceled." number -128

I have no idea what this means, and was hoping someone could help me out.

Is there an app or existing command to report the battery time since the laptop was last unplugged from AC but exlude the time spend during sleep on battery?

This can be inferred from pmset -g log so I'm looking for a way to do this without using an app that stays resident to detect plug/unplug events.

Which Mac laptop I should buy?

I am currently using the 13" Macbook (Late-2009, white unibody) and am looking at the 13" Macbook Air. I am a software developer and have a work laptop that I do my actual development on. However, I like to dabble and learn new programming languages and frameworks in my free time. It's been awhile since I paid attention to processor power and hardware specs, so I am just trying to gauge whether the 13" Macbook Air will be enough for me. I'm drawn to the Air because of it's slim profile and light weight.

I occasionally run linux VMs using VirtualBox, and do not plan on running any windows 8 or 10 VMs.

I would be upgrading the RAM to 8GB, and am trying to determine if i should upgrade the processor from the 1.6GHz i5 to the 2.2GHz i7. Can anyone provide some suggestions?

JetDrive 725 - SHould I use TRIM enabler?

I just installed a JetDrive 725 and it is really nice!

As I am using Yosemite, TRIM can not be enabled ta=hat easily, and the TRIM Enabler is needed. Now there is a certain risk when using it, as kext-signing needs to be disabled.

Now my question: is it worth enabling TRIM? Is it be really that beneficial? Any experiences with it?

Timing individual slides in Keynote

I have a self-playing slideshow in Keynote, with 20 second transitions (each slide is shown for 20 seconds).

The last slide plays a movie, which is longer than 20 seconds. How can I set the transition to longer than 20 seconds for the last slide only?

How can I add an Old English dictionary to Dictionary?

Is there a way to add an Old English dictionary to the Dictionary app? I would like to three-finger-tap a word that's Old English and have it translate it for me.

For pure adventure I want to read Beowulf in its original Old English form. I was all excited to use Dictionary to help me through each word, and was kinda surprised when it didn't know practically any word in it at all.

If I open Dictionary and search a word (such as HWÆT), it does actually return some related words because their origin is the Old English word.

Any ideas?

Cellular traffic noise on iPhone

On an iPhone 4, running iOS 6.1.3, when I'm listening music, I regularly hear noises related to cellular phone network. For example I hear cellular traffic noise:

• when I was out of reach of cellular network and entering a new phone cell,


• just before receiving a new SMS,


• just before receiving a phone call.

I would like to get rid of these "cellular traffic noises".

cancelled pdf transfer from yosemite mac to iOS device via airdrop

I can send pictures from my mac to my iOS devices via airdrop. But when I try to send a pdf, it is not working. After a while I get a message on the iOS device saying that the transfer has been canceled. On the mac, I get a message saying that the iOS device has refused transfer. Is it normal? Is there a way to send my documents via airdrop (i know I can use dropbox but sometimes I do not have access to internet)?

my keyboard is not responding to touch when using whats up application

The keyboard of my ipnohe 6 is often blocked and do not respond to touch when im using whats up application, being so not able to write messages or repply back.
