I own an iphone 6+ with ios 8.1.2. What I need is to have notification profiles.
I want to be notified by my email application (Gmail) and messaging application (Hangouts) "only when I'm out of office". Since I'm using a computer when I'm on the office, I'm already notified by received emails and hangouts messages by my computer and another notification by phone distracts me.
There exists really advanced configuration on Android (Cyanogenmod) which allows you to define profiles and "automatically" switch profiles via connected wifi name (SSID).
What I expect from ios at this point is far little, let me defined profiles; I'll switch between them since it cannot automate.
Do you have any solution for this need?
I'd like to record a two-day long time-lapse video with iPad Air 2.
How long can iPad Air 2 record (charging while recording) time-lapse video in iOS 8.1.2?
Preview, by default, persists edits to the underlying file immediately. (i.e. if you crop something, the underlying file becomes cropped). I find this behavior very irritating.
I tried enabling Settings->General->"Ask to keep changes when closing documents". With this, Preview still persists the change to disk, but asks if I want to keep the change when I close the app.
A 2012 answer to a similar question suggested
defaults write -app 'preview' ApplePersistence -bool no
This does not seem to have any effect.
Is there any way to make Preview behave like a normal application? I want my changes unsaved and transient until I specifically hit save.
I am using Codeblocks to develop C++ code on OSX Mavericks. I am currently running into the problem where the software occasionally will crash and than continue to crash every time the software is started again. I know for this software package there is a bunch of different sources: code blocks pre built apt, mac port version, and I believe even a version you can download through svn or git hub which is the nightly build.
Additionally, I also have problems with the auto complete sometimes not working.
Can someone recommend a version that worked for them with a reasonable explanation on how to install it? Or, if you had similar issues with code blocks, how you went about fixing the bugs?
By the way I am using the pre built 32 bit apt from code blocks website.
I have a 2012 MBP running Yosemite and a Live CD of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It runs fine, but when I get to the install part it only gives me options to delete the hard disk (no operating system detected) or something else (which im not comfortable with).
I've googled for hours and still am no where. Has anyone had this issue/know how to get around it?
I have an external device which mounts as an external drive and which I must format in FAT, not FAT32, for use elsewhere. Is there a way to do that from Snow Leopard?
I have 8 GB of ram and I have only 1.25GB free memory left, not enough to run 2 tabs of gmail. for chrome keep asking me to kill the process of my Gmail which 2-3 days ago I'm always have like 2-3GB free memory after opening 2 gmail accounts and some others websites.
I also installed auto memory clean to help me get more memory back but recently when my mac start, a few minutes later memory almost dropped to 0GB so my memory cleaner app keep to clean memory after that memory consuming so fast and repeat above process again. Memory clean doesn't solve my problem in a long term.
I have closed all the apps to free memory and I see that when idle I should have more memory back but it's not.
So I looked into Activity Monitor and Memory clean app, I saw 2 things that consuming lots of memory which I don't think it's true.
I'm trying to use cleanmymac 2 to help me solve the issue specially to kick away some file cache problem, but I don't see any difference.
In the following Terminal command sudo shutdown -r now
, there is a time set ("...now"). Is there a way to set a specific time.
For example, could it be sudo shutdown -r -int 1200
?
We just bought a new Mini with 10.10 on it (updated to 10.10.1) and it won't list any of the computers in the Windows Workgroup.
I can however ping them by WINS name and connect using smb://EXAMPLE/share/ so WINS lookup seems to function.
However I need to be able to browse the network, and to install a windows printer. When I try and install the windows printer it shows our two workgroups as options, but none of the computers listed in them.
File sharing is turned on (both AFB and SMB) the WINS server is configured for the local Windows 2008 Server and the MacBook Pro with 10.9 works just fine and lists all the machines.
How can I link an app directly to a URL in Xcode 3.2 snow leopard? I've tried following later xcode tutorials but some of features aren't available?
My teenage daughter's Mac Mini (running OSX 10.8) was cluttered with all sorts of stuff, even unwanted and inappropriate popup windows when using Safari, and more. So I made a final TM backup. Then I did a clean install of Mavericks.
Now, I wanted to bring back individual files and folders from that TM backup, BUT...
What to do now?
I know I could restore the cluttered state and copy folders and files manually to an external drive, make another clean install of Mavericks, then copy manually from that external drive. This seems a lot of time and work to me.
Is there an easier way?
I've been doing some testing as my company is planning to integrate our mac users into the windows active directory environment.
Joining/removing computers from a windows domain is cake, everything can be done via the Mac's Directory Utility.
Is there a way for us to control which active directory users or groups can login to this mac?
After joining a mac to a windows domain, anyone with a proper domain account can login to the computer. And by proper, I mean anyone from the domain by default.
Thanks!
At my school we are given Macbook airs for school, and recently IT has deployed an application called steamclean, located under /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/steamclean
Its intent is to prevent the use of Steam. Whenever you run steam, this application will run and then completely delete steam.
I have tried a lot of things. At first, renaming Steam.app to something else would work, as long as it wasn't named 'Steam.app'
However, now no matter what it's called, when you try to run steam it will stop responding and delete.
I have tried to delete steamclean using
launchctl remove com.valvesoftware.steamclean
and then reinstalling steam, but steamclean reinstalls itself as well.
I have also tried corrupting steamclean by editing its raw code, but again, it reinstalled itself with a working copy and was able to delete steam again.
I was wondering if anyone had any idea of what I can do to permanently remove this app from my computer, or if there is a quick go-around for this so that I can use steam again.
Heres a screenshot of what comes up after steam stops responding
I have changed my apple id email address and it's reflecting almost everywhere across devices, however on my iphone in Settings/icloud it still shows the old email address and I periodically get a pop up message asking me to sign in to the icloud under this old address. How can I fix this?
I need a little help here,
I have attached my MacBook Air Mid 2013, to an Belkin Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock HD. On the product page it says that one can connect two monitors. The only condition is that one needs to be an Thunderbolt display. So far so good.
I attached one monitor with HDMI to the dock and another using the mini display port (which is compatible to Thunderbolt).
Unfortunately just the one with Mini-DP is working. If I disconnect the Mini-DP Monitor HDMI starts working.
Is there any advice why this is not working?
AND
Is there any option to make it work?
OSX 10.9.4 @ MacBook Air Mid 2013
Mini-DP Monitor: 2560x1080

How can I customize the Guest user Dock in Yosemite?
Here are a few approaches I've tried but haven't been able to complete:
/System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/Preferences/com.apple.Dock.plist
. In Yosemite, it seems this plist is overwritten by the user creation script./System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/
. This does modify the Dock, but it also results in Keychain permission problems. It also feels like a very heavy-handed solution to modify one configuration. If anybody else has any ideas, especially if you know or have an idea about how to keep the user creation script from overwriting the Dock plist, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks!
Updated phone and every time I send a text message it shows that it is sending one of three messages why is it showing three messages being sent
I swim with (some) regularity. Is there a way for me to edit the Health app fitness section to add a Swim chart / category?
I'm using OS X as a Server, running Server.app 4.0 to provide email hosting/etc.
Attached to this machine I have a PROMISE Pegasus R2 RAID drive mounted at /Volumes/RAID6-11TB
, and I changed the default service storage location so that the Server.app data would be located on the RAID drive (for redundency, and so that Backblaze can backup my precious email, which normally ignores /Library
).
The problem is when rebooting the machine, Server.app doesn't properly startup, because something during the boot process is creating an empty directory /Volumes/RAID6-11TB/Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/NetBoot
. When the RAID array is later automagically mounted, it's default mountpoint already exists, so it is instead mounted at /Volumes/RAID6-11TV 1
, which causes no good at all.
Is there a way to fix rebooting so that either:
Server.app
won't launch until the RAID disk is ready, orRegarding (1), I've edited /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.serverd.plist
to add a QueueDirectories key, but that doesn't seem to have any effect, and WatchPaths sounds like it has the wrong semantics, so I'm leary to even try that.
Regarding (2), if I boot into Single User mode (holding down Command+S
during boot), then wait until all messages have completed, then hit Ctrl+D
to continue the boot, /Volumes/RAID6-11TB
is properly mounted as intended.
However, this doesn't help for automated reboots when I'm away (e.g. after power failures). (OK, the "proper" answer is battery backups so that the machine doesn't reboot, but let's ignore that for now...)
Is there some way to make this work?
I would be so happy if someone could assist me in creating an Applescript to send some emails. I have seen a few examples but I am not confident that I can adapt them to my own needs.
I need to send the same email (subject & body), one at a time, to a list of addresses on a .csv file. The only point is that the email has to send from a specific Mail account within the Apple Mail program. I am using Apple Mail 5.3 and OSX 10.7.5
Many thanks in advance to anyone willing to help out.
Macbook Pro. Trying to reinstall Yosemite. I can get to the "Install OS X" page, but the only destination given is "Recovery HD". I can go to disk utilities and see that "Macintosh HD" is there, and I can hit the "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" options and those run through with no errors. The partition map shows one partition covering the entire disk (449.42G) with a Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" format.
How do I actually install to "Macintosh HD" though, if it doesn't show up as something you can install to?
After consulting the programming section of StackExchange, I have been referred to apple.stackexchange instead.
I am using the following template: http://ift.tt/1whemgS.
The associated forum (http://ift.tt/1uZqzlV) suggests that I should run the following commands to solve a coding issue:
I know I run commands with Terminal.app and I assume I can copy/paste the coding above into Terminal, given that LaTeX is in my $PATH. My questions are, (1) What is the $PATH and (2) how do I configure it to include LaTeX?
Thanks!
Best,
LJR
PS: I am using TeXShop. PPS: I am new to coding and LaTeX.
For some reason I cannot find Notification Centre section on my iPhone 6.
It's where you can set the today view to appear on lock screen, etc. I set it up a long time ago (probably in iOS 7), and I think there used to be a "Notification Centre" section in Settings. Now All I see is:
-Notifications (control notifications from apps) -Control Centre -Do Not Disturb
Where did it go? I searched online and tried to find out myself but it's taking too much time. Can anyone help?
im now having major problems with my imac, i had a massive software failure running mavericks, it damamged the os and i lost the recovery partition, i then wiped hard drive clean and tried to upgrade to yosemite, it failed numerous times( unable to verify etc etc)
i then tried to create bootable yosemite...also failed with installing one of the essential packages.
im am now running the imac off a cloned version of my damaged mavericks os and the recovery partition says its yosemite and doesnt work.
i have also tried to reinstall from lion cd, again not working
also the internet recovery does not work
seem to be in a loop of trouble....how do i go about just doing a clean install of anything?
I had to run find / -name foo > found.txt

Is there an API or tool to convert a Mail.app
mailbox like~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/my.mbox
to a directory tree of plain text messages, one per file ?
Then I could grep
, prune old messages ... in Unix, as opposed to WysiALLyg.
(I realize that even a single "message" may have a complicated structure hard to map to a Unix file tree; but this must have been worked out in the elder days of email.)
(Related: documentation-on-apple-mails-emlx-data-structures-for-conversion-purposes on SO.)
I have my MP6,1 connected via Ether to my Time Capsule, and my ATV connected via Ether to the same TC. Everything seems to be working, but my ATV cannot see my Home Sharing movies.
I have both the ATV and MP with HS turned on, and connected to the same iCloud account. The ATV simply doesn't see my iTunes.
Any ideas?
Did you navigate to a page that produced a popup that says (among other things)...
Suspicious Activity Might Have been Detected
...and then asks you to call a toll free number? As you might have guessed, this is a scam, and seems to be going around for a while now. It happens on iOS and MacOS, and in different browsers.
I am trying to set up a very simple network using a Netgear 5 port Gigabit switch, a Mac Mini, a Seagate Central 4Tb NAS and an Apple TV to serve movies to my Samsung TV.
I followed a guide on WikiHow, connected up all the devices, set the IP of the Mac manually and assumed that would be that.
I am far from expert in this area so as I cannot see anything under "shared" in finder I am now at a loss as to what to try. Is there something I need to do to tell the Mac what is there? I tried "connect to server" but none appear to be there.
The 3 lights on the switch corresponding to the ports connected are green and flash occasionally so they appear to be connected. I do not have an internet router where the devices will be deployed hence the wired solution with switch.
Big day for me - I have just bought a new TV with wifi, my first. It shows in the available wifi networks menu but when I click on it I am asked for a WPA2 password. Where do I find that please?
I have a macbook pro (mid-2011) and an HP Pavilion 22bw (prob inconsequential) connected via a Thunderbolt DVI Adapter.
Ever since installing Yosemite, I now need to open the macbook pro and log in via its own screen, rather than the external monitor. It simply does not display / send any signal to the external screen until AFTER I'm logged in.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is there any other option? This is highly inconvenient with how my workspace is set up.
Thanks!
I don't know exactly how/when/why this behavior started, but recently whenever I perform a paste operation (mostly this happens in a browser, from one tab to another), my entire system (2013 MBP running Yosemite) will hang for a number of seconds (~30-60sec).
I'll copy some text from one page then paste it in another (e.g. a form, a gmail compose window, etc.) and on the paste operation, instead of the text getting pasted, the mouse cursor becomes the circular, colorful "waiting" icon. At this point the entire system appears to be "hanging", although I can move the cursor. For example, during the hang, even my Parallels Windows VM is unresponsive. When the system returns from the hang, the text is not pasted.
I also tested this with a non-browser application (Notes) and it still causes a hang, so that's why I'm implicating the OS.
This is obviously a fairly serious and limiting bug, so your help is appreciated.
I have a MacPro 1,1 bought in early 2007. Earlier this year I was about to recycle it but tried installing an SSD as a boot/apps drive. It has been a great success, it now feels like a new machine and I'm contemplating souping it up to 16GB of RAM and using it to run Windows VMs (I'm a .Net developer) in Parallels Desktop or VMWare or similar.
The RAM is going to cost < $50. I was wondering if this is a good idea in 2014 or if I'm going to hit a load of constraints imposed by the age of the hardware. Any comments or observations very gratefully received. I cannot and will not pay thousands for a new MacPro.
I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 7, I have an active data bundle and the provider says everything is set up correctly (APN etc.) However, mobile data only works if I activate tethering and then use a different device, and bizarrely it works in WhatsApp. No other apps (Facebook, Maps, SpeedTest) seem to be able to access mobile data. Any ideas?
I have inherited some Mac-based machine, but when I power it on - virtual machine with Windows XP starts. I cannot figure, how to exit this mode or restore Mac to factory defaults. I tried booting with pressing F keys, Cmd+R and C. Nothing works, and Windows XP is booting normalny. Thank you for your help in advance.
I noticed that even when Safari is closed, many web processes are active, and these processes are active even when I just restarted my Mac.
Actually, I noticed that this process is in the Spotlight web content group, what is the purpose of it and when will it stop ?
Is it possible to stop the App Store from giving notifications that cannot permanently be dismissed for unapplied updates to particular applications that come as part of the base system, in particular Safari.
The command sudo softwareupdate --ignore Safari && echo @SUCCESS
exits successfully on Mavericks:
Password:
Ignored updates:
(
Safari
)
@SUCCESS
But the uninstalled update for Safari still remains.
A high proportion the most updates I receive are to these base-system apps that I have no use for (Safari is the most frequent offender, iBooks has annoyed me). A nuisance-free way of deinstalling any of these applications would be a very good answer.
For non-base applications, updates can be suppressed according to the answer at http://ift.tt/1GPleDr, from where I got the above command.
When OS X Mavericks was released in 2013 with tagging support built directly into Finder, I expected tagging on OS X to gather steam (at least among “power users”). However, the number of tools and solutions for using tags remains limited:
I am looking for tools to support maintenance jobs like merging tags, listing tags according to frequency, mass re-tagging.
Are there other tools to help with these jobs?
I have a 2008 Mac Pro that I used to have a USB 3.0 card installed on that has stopped working with each OS release and is dependent on the use of a Kext Wizard which can create compatibility and sometimes other issues that make it more difficult to troubleshoot and lag a couple months behind a release of the OS update as well as getting rid of the kexts can be a pain if they are creating conflicts.
The card I have does not have an FCC ID or brand label on it and is simply labeled as "USB 3.0" with 2 USB 3.0 ports. The single chip on it says:
D720200AF1 112EV073G CHINA
Those that I have looked at already:
I am looking for a specific card by an established vendor for the 2008 Mac Pro to get USB 3.0 speeds (not just a 2.0 with some boost, but true USB 3.0) that doesn't require the use of Kext Wizards and as much chasing of emulation drivers used in Hackintoshes and has been confirmed to work with Yosemite.
Has anyone found that that exists?
Note: I realize 10.10 Yosemite will likely be the last to support the 2008 Mac Pro but the system still is going strong and close comparable benchmarks to my 2012 & 2013 ones so I would like to continue to use it as long as possible.
I'm going to record a two-day long Time-lapse video with iPad Air 2. But what I want to know is how long can iPad Air 2 (charge while recording) record Time-lapse video in iOS 8.1.2..?
Is /usr/bin/etags severely out of date in Yosemite? If so, what is the easiest way to get an up-to-date version of etags, to use with Emacs from http://ift.tt/ocMo9S?
I am using:
GNU Emacs 24.4.1 (x86_64-apple-darwin13.4.0, NS apple-appkit-1265.21) of 2014-10-20 on builder10-9.porkrind.org.

Since upgrading to iOS 8, I've noticed that the Events list inside iPhoto is no longer in reverse chronological order. In fact, it's not in any order at all. This makes the Events system almost completely useless for me.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it a bug, or is there a setting I need to configure?
It seems that iTerm2 is hardcoded to highlight search results using a yellow background color. I tried both the latest release and the nightlies but could not find a way to change that color.
Did I miss something? It seems implausible to me, that a terminal emulator with such a degree of customizability would really hardcode a single color while at the same time making virtually everything else user-configurable.
I have iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2. I unable to activate iMessage and FaceTime. I have tried to Reset the network setting, reset whole phone, turned iMessage and FaceTime on and off but no luck. This problem occured when I switched my SIM card to other network and then again switched back my SIM to orignal network on which I was using iPhone for years. My number is shows when I go to Setting and then to "Phone":
In iMessage Menu I am unable to see my number displayed there:
Same is the case in FaceTime Menu as well: Please Help me in solving this problem.
I have two different 3TB SATA hard disks:
I also have access to two different USB 3 HDD docks:
It turns out that if I partition a disk on the Connectland dock as GPT with one HFS+ volume, the disk would become unusable when I plug it onto the Focus dock; OS X Yosemite would complain that the disk cannot be read and suggest that I initialize it.
Same thing the other way around: if I partition a disk on the Focus dock, the disk would be unusable on the Connectland dock, and OS X Yosemite would complain that the disk cannot be read and suggest that I initialize it.
This happens to both Seagate and Toshiba disks.
In both cases, the disk would be recognized as a 3TB disk. I can also use the full capacity of the disk, provided that I put the disk on the dock where it was partitioned and formatted - i.e. if I partitioned and formatted a disk on the Connectland dock, I would have to keep using it on the Connectland dock.
What's going on? How is this even possible? How am I even supposed to shop for a new dock reliably if my dock dies?
