About repairing permissions in the mac mini

If one uses several different programs including the mac disk utility to repair permissions on the computer maybe 3 0r 4 times in one day can this 'hurt' the computer or can one use these utility programs many times with impunity?

Title says it. There is no "Invite People" link/button...

What setting do I need to change? Yes, I've got iCloud setup. Do I have to upgrade to the new iCloud storage?

How can I completely reset iMessage in Yosemite?

I'm experiencing issues sending iMessages from my Mac. It used to work, but stopped. I tried a bunch of "fixes" I found online:

sign out of iMessage and log back in another day

rebooting

restarting my phone

None of these worked to resolve the problem.

I tried to reset the Messages app by removing some .plist files, but that didn't work (those instructions are from 2012).

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2. How can I reset the Messages app to a blank slate?

I also tried setting up Messages using another user account on my Mac, and it worked flawlessly. This leads me to believe there's some kind of issue with iCloud syncing between my iPhone and Mac.

I have already checked in preferences and english is the only language selected. I'm running 10.10.2 on a late 2013 Macbook Pro 15. Does anyone know what is causing certain ones to be in hebrew when I want only english and how to fix it?

How do I prevent my mac's wifi from ever (not just once) seeing a particular wifi network?

So here is my dilemma- I'm addicted to the interent and I don't want to have the option of using it in my home except for particular times. On my own network, I plan to change the password to something long and unmemorizable and write it down and leave it somewhere else (say the coffee shop) /tell it to a friend etc so that I can have the option of using it- then tell my key chain to forget the network's password. Problem solved! The only issue is that my upstairs neighbors have a network and I know the password! If only I could delete it from the keychain in my head, but I can't. I can ask them to change the password, and will, but it's not their problem and I feel silly doing so. Plus even if they do it'll take them forever.. So my question is is there a way to prevent my computer from using that particular network, forever- so that my computer sees it and automatically ignores it?

Making music and photos available to Apple TV

I have a double story house with the modem upstairs and an Apple TV downstairs. I also have a usb hard drive with an iTunes library and iPhoto library on it. At the moment ever time I want to use the libraries I have to plug my usb drive into my MacBook.

I've recently discovered that my modem has a usb port on it. Can I plug my hard drive into that port and make the libraries accessible to both my MacBook and Apple TV?

If possible I don't want to have to keep my MacBook turned on all the time. I.e. Would be nice to just have the usb hard drive plugged into the modem and access my library on the Apple TV without my MacBook being turned on.

In researching this answer I've read lot about apple's AirPort Extreme and how it can do something like that. But unless that's my only option I would rather not spend an extra $200 if I don't have to.

Are there any binaries available via the command line to get information from the GPS on a jail broken iPhone? I've searched through Cydia and haven't found anything, but I wouldn't imagine this would be something brand new that hasn't been developed.

Would a snapped IR sensor ribbon on a A1181 macbook stop the macbook from booting? I was replacing a sata hard drive cable in macbook and the IR sensor snapped and I am still having very odd hard drive issues with the new sata cable and not be able to boot very well.

Turn down TX power on AirPort?

Our floor has a blind spot so we needed to place an AirPort to cover two rooms. The AirPort in this particular room is transmitting at a higher power than needed, and its bleeding onto some areas where its unwanted. (This was found with Wifi Stumbler).

I'm running the AirPort Utility on OS X Mavericks. The room in question has an AirPort Express. I've looked in the AirPort Utility, but I don't see where I can set TX power.

How do I turn down TX power on AirPort?

Is there some sort of secret knock to use with AirPort to get into advanced settings? Or should I be using something else to configure them?

In Apple Numbers, Why is the command Hide Column greyed out? What format do I have set up that does not allow me to hide that specific column? I have un-merged all the cells.

Intel Core 2 Duo and Yosemite

I have a iMac circa 2009/2010 running a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2GB RAM installed.

If I was to upgrade to Yosemite, even with an upgrade to 8GB RAM, would this be enough to run Yosemite well? (Well as in comfortably useable, not freezing and becoming sluggish each time you open a browser tab or app).

If not, what would the most recent version of OS X I could run and maintain a quick machine? Currently on 10.6.

Mostly general use, but occasional use a home office machine, running Adobe CS4 etc.

IMessage not activating and can't select number to receive

I got a new SIM card and now I message is not working. Firstly I could only select my e-mail address as the means of being reached and my number is not in bold and can't be ticked. Also when I turn I message activation off and back on again it comes up with an error and just says waiting for activation. Any ideas?

Using Launchbar to make Popclip appear

PopClip is a Mac app that adds the iOS functionality of a bunch of options showing up above selected text. PopClip automatically appears every time I select text, and that's annoying, so I want to trigger it from the keyboard instead. I'm trying to set up Launchbar to launch an Applescript to cause PopClip to appear next to selected text.

The Applescript I'm using is tell application "PopClip" to appear. However, when I press ↩ with the text selected in Mail and "Show Pop Clip.scpt" selected in Launchbar, nothing happens. And when I press ⇥ as Obdev (the Launchbar developer) recommends here, I don't see an option to "Run" as they suggest.

How can I use Launchbar to make Popclip appear?

Mac Won't Boot. Help needed

I use top-notch MBPRO15 Late 2011 with the latest OSX and all the recent updates installed. I had booting problems before which I managed to solve through command+option+P+R. I'm not sure what exactly caused the problem, but it helped a couple of times. But starting from yesterday I'm failing to make it boot whatever I do with it.

So I'm having this:

I turn on the Mac

Chimes go as expected and the initial login screen appears

I put my credentials and booting progress bar starts up

After like 30-60 secs the progress bar disappears leaving me only with a grey screen.

Two options possible afterwards (i) the screen stays grey for as long as I wait or (ii) the mac reboots leading me to the initial login screen.

When try to go to the Troubleshooter with command+R the sequence is exactly the same. Instead of the Recovery mode I get a frozen grey screen.

If you need any more information to localise the problem please ask.

Importing from 6.05

I have projects (songs) in my old version of GarageBand, 6.05. I want to move these projects into my current version of GB, 10.0.3.

I have been looking for a way to import or export but don't see an option to do this.

I'm sure there is a way to do this but I don't see it in GB help.

Why does the Messages.app alert me to new messages quicker than my actual iPhone?

The notification center clearly posts its alerts visible on my screen faster than my iPhone alerts me.

Does the path of my incoming texts change when I have the Messages.app configured to sync with my phone or does the Messages.app just alert faster, or is something else going on?

Macbook wifi networks disconnect and disappear after sleep in Yosemite

I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2010 model) and ever since I upgraded to Yosemite I noticed my wifi networks disconnecting and disappearing after the computer wakes from sleep. I try to turn wifi on/off and no networks appear. The only solution I've found is to restart the computer which has gotten to be very annoying since I end up having to close all my work. Sometimes the computer completely locks up after sleep and restarts itself. I thought maybe it has to do with the SSD but that upgrade was made on Mavericks and I never had any problems until getting Yosemite.

Specs:

OSX Yosemite 10.10.2

4GB RAM

2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

256 GB Samsung SSD HD

Possible to select multiple items in a Dock folder?

When you click on a folder in the Dock, say the Downloads folder, clicking an item will immediately perform its default action (a .jpg, for example, will open in Preview). Duh!

Is it possible to select multiple items in that Dock folder before the default action is performed (like how you can Command+Click multiple items in the Finder)? Imagine selecting three .jpg files and opening them all in Preview in one fell swoop! Or even highlighting three items to drag them all to a different location at the same time!

I've tried various keyboard commands but couldn't get anything to work. The closest thing I could make happen is with Option+Click which will perform the default action in the background and keep the Dock window open... not quite what I was looking for.

iPhone 4s and 5s

I use two I phone. I changed SIM card of my iPhone 4s and replaced it with a new one. But I don't see the contacts that are in my iphone5s on my 4s. I also have same Apple id

Boot Camp only detects two out of three monitors

Setup: brand new MacBook Pro with Retina Display plus two 27" Thunderbolt displays. So, three displays in total, which works like a charm in OS X.

Unfortunately, when boot-camping into Windows 8.1, it detects only two of these: the one on the MacBook and the (first) external one:

Note that interestingly, the devices plugged into the secondary external monitor still work - e.g. all three cameras are there.

Any ideas?

Two iPhones, buth synced but with different contacts

I have two iPhones and I would like to have them nicely synced calendar and task, but to keep different contacts. One is an office phone and I would like not to have my private numbers etc. Currently, on my old phone I have mail + contacts synced with Google, and Calendars, Reminders on iCloud, same as on my MacBook Air.

All advices are more than welcomed!

Is there any way to re-enable the “old style” iTunes metadata editing window in version 12.1.0.50?

So, when iTunes 12 was released the interface was changed a bit; which is expected. But unlike older releases, it included a change to the metadata editing window which made it more compact and altered the user experience.

Some of us still like the “old style” editing window layout and the user experience connected to it. Heck the “old style” window has been like that for years. But prior to iTunes 12.1.0.50—and still using iTunes 12—one could access the “old style” metadata editing window by doing a “Get Info…” on media while holding down the alt/option. This blog post explains the simple trick nicely and below is a screenshot of the “old style” metadata editing window for reference.

Now with iTunes 12.1.0.50 it seems that this somewhat hidden—yet easy to access—functionality is gone. Unless I am missing something? Does anyone know how to reenable the “old style” metadata editing window in iTunes 12.1.0.50? Or is it simply gone and ripped from the core code forever?

Limit hard drive i/o usage by one process (Dropbox)

I'm using only 5% of 1TB given by Dropbox and it regularly chokes my Mac Mini's HDD by "Downloading file list" too often.

I think it's just a poor performance (it started since the last Dropbox version) but Dropbox support does not understand the problem. So I would like to limit reading and writing by the process.

Is the best seller list of podcasts sensitive to the user's history or user's region on the iTunes app?

I've been listening to some podcasts on the iTunes app, and each time I finish any of them, the list of best sellers is rearranged to show the last I was listening to first the list, and all the others are pushed down in the list.

How is that possible? I mean, am I the only one listening to that particular publisher, or is that list only the user history?

Google Maps on iPhone wont update map orientation as I cycle

Goole Maps on my iPhone have has stopped changing the orientation of the map in cycling mode.

The first image is a screengrab of Apple's maps. You can see the arrow is the same direction as the direction im going.

The second image is a screengrab of Google Maps. I cant get the map to update as I make turns so that the arrow is the same direction as me. Im talking about how car GPSs always work.

Battery issue - backup problem?

I recently bought a new iPhone 6, because my iPhone 5 had some weird battery issues: when I was on 3G or 4G, the battery would literally go down from 50% to 10% in like 10 minutes. On the Wi-Fi, it was pretty OK.

Right now, with my new Phone, I was expecting way better battery results. But weirdly enough, it's still pretty bad, though the phone is new.

I went to the Apple Store a couple of weeks back with my iPhone 5 and the guy told me that it may be a software issue (related to my backup, which I put on my iPhone 6) and not a hardware issue (don't worry I didn't buy the new iPhone just because of that).

Anyways, I was wondering if that could be a logical explanation? And then, I would like to try completely factory restoring my phone to check but there are some settings like the wifi passwords, etc. that I'd like to keep...how can I transfer them without the backup?

Bootcam/Macbook Pro - Weird Screen Resolution/Display Issues

I've recently been told by College to install Windows on my MacBook Pro with Bootcamp. Everything installed "successfully" and I can use Windows on it.

But there is a massive issue. The screen resolution sucks; this is how this page looks when zoomed in at 100%:

As you can see, web pages are unreadable. But it's not just webpages that are like this. It's EVERYTHING.

I am using the highest screen resolution available in Control Panel. If I use ANY other screen resolution in the list, it gets even worse:

But it's not just the fact that everything's too small or too large, in many cases, it's a combination of BOTH. Why is it doing this and how can I fix it? I have installed everything as per the instructions. I have made sure that all drivers are up to date. I have also tried rolling back some intel and display drivers. Nothing changes though. It still isn't displaying things properly. I have spent the past three days searching online and have not come across anything that even resembles this issue.

Please help!

Is there a way to permanently "Deny" an application incoming network connections (i.e. no more prompts)?

There's a few apps that keep prompting me for incoming network connections, which I prefer to deny, but whenever I open these programs, I'm re-prompted to Allow/Deny incoming network connections for them.

Is there a way to permanently Deny an application so that I am no longer prompted?

(I'm currently using Yosemite)

Slow Computer Question

I use a Mid-2011 iMac 21.5" (with 4 users on it).

I have noticed that the computer is runs quite slow when I am the only one logged in. The only applications I typically have open at once are Xcode, Safari and occasionally some other applications such as Reminders and notes.

When I checked Activity monitor to see how much RAM it was using, I noticed it said it had used 3.97-3.99 out of the 4 GB of ram that it has (See Screenshot).

I am considering buying extra RAM but I wanted to make sure that this was actually the cause of the problem before investing in $100 RAM chips.

Would upgrading the RAM from 4 GB to maybe 8 or 16 GB fix the issue? If not, what would fix the issue? Is there anything else that needs fixing?

iMac login window doesn't react for a long time when waking up my mac

I have several problems with my iMac. I have an iMac 27" Late 2012 with an Intel Core i7 3,4 GHz, 16 GB Ram, 3 TB Fusion Drive, a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX (1 GB Ram) and OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.

Every time, I wake my iMac up from screen locked (⌃ + ⇧ + ⏏) he shows the typical "spinning beachball" for a few minutes, until I can enter my password.

Another problem is that, when I open System Preferences and click on "Mouse" I also had to wait a few minutes, until I can change the settings. While waiting, he does also not show the Animation on the right side. The animation becomes visible, after he stopped showing the spinning beachball. While this, only the System Preferences are stuck. All other apps are working properly and also the system is working and does not show the spinning beachball, while I wait for the preferences to load. The spinning beachball is only visible, when my mouse pointer is over the system preferences. Opening the Mouse Preferences takes 2 and a half minutes, which is in my opinion too long to be a normal loading process.

And now the crazy thing. When I lock my screen with the key combination (⌃ + ⇧ + ⏏), it also takes a few minutes, until the screen is black and locked. But when I lock it with clicking on the lock in my status bar and then clicking on "Lock screen", the locks the screen immediately. How can I solve that problem? The problem existed first after I installed OS X Yosemite 10.10, but the 10.10.2 update didn't solve it. Resetting my iMac didn't work too.

So may my printer could be the problem? (Dell C1765 MPF) I will try to remove it and then send my iMac to screen lock.

Apple iCar prediction

I'm probably in the wrong part of StackExchange so please point me to where it's most appropriate.

Anyway, I just want to give a shot at predicting the future after having read about Apple devoting 100's of developers to creating a new kind of car. An electric car.

Electric cars are notoriously low-range. My prediction is that Apple is developing a kind of commuter car that can automatically drive to a refill station while its owner is at work. So when he finishes work, his car is recharged, even if there is no charging station right next to his work.

How likely do you think that is?

Install multiple different versions of Xcode

I am on Yosemite and trying to compile a software package using g++. Compiling this particular package has previously worked on Mountain Lion under Xcode 4.6.3, but now I have Xcode 6.1.1, and the software won't compile. For this reason, I'd like to be able to switch between different versions of Xcode. I should say I am working exclusively with the command-line tools (CLT), make, g++ and the like. Now I installed an earlier version of Xcode, 4.6.3, so that the situation is the following:

/Applications/Xcode.app: current version of Xcode, 6.1.1

/Applications/Xcode4.6.3/Xcode.app: earlier version of Xcode, 4.6.3

I was planning on switching in between these two using sudo xcode-select -s PATH. As far as I can tell, this command works, and I can check the result using sudo xcode-select -p. Further, I have CLTs installed in /usr/bin, so that e.g., which g++ shows /usr/bin/g++. Still, if I switch to the older Xcode version, the package won't compile. Interestingly, find below the output of g++ -v for the two different versions of Xcode:

What is your preferred way of having multiple versions of Xcode, each with their own set of CLTs, installed at the same time?

I can't install or remove windows 7 or later using Boot Camp Assistant?

I tried for a couple days to install Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro which has OSX Yosemite (10.10.2). As you see in the capture, the third checkbox is disabled. I have created a Windows 7 Install disk on a USB flash and downloaded the latest Windows support software from Apple, all I have to do is install it on the Mac.

What's the problem here?

I checked the latest firmware, every thing was OK except Boot ROM Version, mine was( MBP101.00EE.B07), I tried to update it but the last number was different MBP101.00EE.B02

Last night I Removed every thing on my Mac and then I used the Internet recovery for installing the OS again, It was successful.

My internet is not very bad, 600KB/s, and the boot was fast.

I did backups using TimeMachine, and also created image using Disk Utility.

Before I buy this Mac, I had a PC running Windows 7. I have 8 years experience in Windows, but I'm totally new to Mac OS.

Yosemite Spotlight on Client not index server shared folder

I've a Mac Mini Server (Yosemite server) where is located a folder name 'Studio'. This folder is shared in the same network.

I've a Client iMac (Yosemite) that access to that folder 'Studio' located on server.

Spotlight on Server search in that folder. Sporlight on Client NOT search in that folder.

I've running on Client terminal:


sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/Studio

And have this error:

can i safely use my macbook pro hdd (late 2011) on another macbook pro (late 2009)?

i have a gpu issue with my macbook pro late 2011 which requires 3 weeks in repair (until the required parts come in). I took out the hard-drive and put it in an external casing.

Can i safely use this hard-drive on another macbook pro (late 2009) and still use my data/applications/OS X?

Apple Mail keeps crashing, please help

please could somebody helps to decipher crash reports and diagnose a problem I am having with Apple mail. Following bad RAM problem on my PowerMac G5/10.5.8 Apple Mail 3.6 started to crash, frequently shortly after I open it, or whenever I try to do anything with it, for example when selecting a message or attempting to send a mail; each time the spinning beachball appears, and mail crash. Please have a look at the crash report excepts.

No restarts, permissions repairs, or the use of DU, DiskWarrior ot TechTool Pro have helped.

I am pretty much devastated; any help shall be greatly appreciated indeed. Thank you.

This "weird group trick" makes MacBook Pro login, apps, and systems run slow slow slow ... but why?

Here's a "weird trick" that instantly makes my MacBook Pro / Yosemite system run slow slow slow ... create a circular group inclusion in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.

Answers Sought Why does this slowdown happen? Are other users affected? Is there a tool that automatically diagnoses and fixes it? How can it be avoided in the future?

Working Example

create new groups "a" and "b"

include "a" in "b"

include "b" in "a"

using the finder interface, recursively give "a" read/write privileges to any large directory tree (for me /usr/local is large enough to elicit a severe slowdown)

Voila! Now everything on my MacBook runs slow ... slow ... slow. Logins require up to one minute, and even simple typing sporadically elicits the "spinning pizza." Fortunately, eliminating the circular group inclusion instantly restores the system to its former speed.

Remark After creating this slowdown inadvertently, it took me two weeks to figure out, reproduce, and repair the cause of it. The search for a fix was slow and frustrating because none of the usual fixes of "slow Mac syndrome" were effective, and none of the usual diagnostics were revealing.

How to install java 7 on yosemite properly?

When I type java -version I see:

No Java runtime present, requesting install.

I go to download and install jre-7u75-macosx-x64. After that in preferences I see Java control panel which tells me that I have recommended version of Java (Java 7 update 75) but terminal says again that

No Java runtime present, requesting install.

When I type

export JAVA_HOME="/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.7"

I see:

Unable to find any JVMs matching version "1.7". No Java runtime present, try --request to install.

Java control panel shows that Java located in

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java

What am I doing wrong?

What a good app to tag my favorite places?

I travel a lot to the same 5 cities for work. Sometimes, if I have a spare hour or two I explore and sometimes on those explorations, I find great places. I'd like to tag those places on a map with an iphone app. But google map app doesn't allow that. I can't find anything else.

CUPS and Department IDs

It is possible to enable department IDs ("E.K.C." - I don't know what this abbreviation means) in OS X 10.8 CUPS, but I've found no way to actually set the department name and code in CUPS configuration. Are they hidden in a configuration file and not accessible by CUPS webinterface or where are they?

Title says it. There is no "Invite People" link/button...

What setting do I need to change? Yes, I've got iCloud setup. Do I have to upgrade to the new iCloud storage?
