Mac OS X Orphaned files

I was using hardlink (http://ift.tt/1wlrAuv) to point an important folder to my new google drive folder and my machine crashed. Right now I have no access to OS X so I connected my HDD to a Windows 10 machine with bootcamp drivers installed. I can see all files there, but my senstive folder looks a file, instead of being a folder.. So I can't enter the folder to get the files and I believe the files are still there. Orphaned.

Any suggestions? It could be applications and steps when using Windows or OS X as I'm trying to get access to a mac computer to try to recover those files.

Disable an account in Apple Mail?

I have an email account under a domain that has been decommissioned. The domain still has an MX record, but its been disabled at the mail server. When someone tries to use the email address, they get a "550 Domain has been disabled" response back.

I cannot figure out how to disable the account. I've tried right clicking and "Take Offline", but that does not seem to help. Apple Mail still prompts me incessantly for a username and password. In addition, Apple Mail will no longer exit properly. It wants to throw a dialog for a password before it exits (that eventually requires a Force Quit).

I don't want to delete the account because I may need to refer to emails in the account.

How do I disable the account in Apple Mail?

(The operating system is OS X 10.8.5 (fully patched). Mail Version 6.6 (1510)).

Messages.app hijacking texts

Text messages to my number are received either by my phone or by Messages.app (iMessage), but not both. If I leave my computer on then I will inexplicably not receive texts on my phone (until the computer goes to sleep, I suppose).

How do I configure my devices so that Messages would contain the same information as my iPhone?

Copy directory from "Get Info" in Yosemite?

I am a programmer who used to constantly copy directory of a file from its "Get Info" menu. Since Yosemite, the original pure path is replaced with a "user-friendly" kid-version directory, which cannot be copied. Like this.

Is there a workaround for this?

How to clone existing Filevault encrypted HD to SSD with a linux live cd/usb

I have a 13-inch, Mid 2012 MacBook pro which comes with a 500 GB sata hard drive. I'm running 10.9.5 Mavericks. Of the 500 GB I have about 77 GB used whereas the rest of it is free space, this drive is encrypted with Filevault.

I have recently bought myself a 256 GB SSD from Amazon that I got for a good Cyber Monday deal, I want to clone this drive onto my new drive. I don't have a connector for the SSD drive to plug it in via a USB port and I'm wondering if I can do without one.

I have an external 2 TB hard drive, I'm thinking if I can boot my mac off a linux USB, I should be able to clone the existing hard drive with something like dd as a raw file on my external hard drive, then trim the raw image to remove the empty blocks, then start the mac with the SSD plugged in, flash the SSD with the raw image and then resize the partition so that all of the 256 GB of the SSD are available.

To me this sounds like a solid plan and I should be able to google around and figure out the commands to do all of this, I however have one concern around Filevault - will I be able to trim the partition after creating a clone on the external hard drive. I don't know if this part is possible.

Can someone confirm if this is possible, if not please suggest how you would do something like this.

How to add a libreoffice launcher for writer?

I have libreoffice 4.3.4.1 on OS X 10.10, it only has one libreoffice launcher in spotlight/launchpad. Is it possible to add launchers for subprograms like writer, calc, impress, draw... ?

How does Mail.app do SMTP with iCloud servers?

I am trying to troubleshoot the connection between me and the iCloud servers at smtp.mail.me.com. It works for Mail.app, but I need to know what's going on (so I can replicate this within my iOS app). I can do the TLS connection by hand using openssl (openssl s_client -starttls smtp -crlf -connect smtp.mail.me.com:587), but I get a 535 response (Failed Authentication), even though I know (100%) that the credentials are correct, and I have even tried them with the @icloud.com, @mac.com and @me.com versions of my username.

I can get this setup to work (via openssl) with gmail, so I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing on that score.

The system used to work, but stopped working with icloud.com sometime in the past couple of months. Was there a change in how iCloud.com negotiates the TLS handshake? Does it require something other than base64 encoding of the credentials? Additional encryption of the credentials within the SSL system, or something goofy like that? I tried to use Wireshark to trace what happens when Mail.app sends an email, but of course it's all encrypted, so that's not much help.

New iphone, synced everything from old. Old photos not showing. Please help

Same as the title. Warranty was running out, decided to exchange iphone 5 for another one. I synced everything with iCloud before deleting the whole phone data with the iphone rep. The new device retrieved everything except some 300 pics/vids from my camera roll. I tried to sync device with a laptop (itunes), nothing coming up. Will I ever get to see my old photos? Help is greatly appreaciated.

Display Photo from URL in iOS 8 Today View Widget

I've got a old web cam that takes an image every 5 minutes and uploads it to an FTP site (which I can access from an http url). I'm looking for a simple iOS 8 today view widget that I can point to this URL so that I always have the most recent web cam photo in the notifications panel. For the life of me, I can't find a widget that offers this simple functionality.

Does anyone know of an app I can use to achieve this goal? At this point, I don't even mind writing a script to produce and RSS feed, etc. to make this happen.

I have internet plan on my ipad just like my iphone. How can I hook my ipad to my tv using the internet instead of wifi? I want to watch movies from my ipad on my tv.

No cap after a period in Dragon Dictate 4

In Dragon Dictate 4, when I say "Hello world period this is a test period", it outputs:

Hello world. this is a test."

There is no cap after the first period. Is there any way to fix it?

This issue affects most programs: Evernote, the default Mac OS X mail application, Safari, Latexian, etc. There is no such issue using Dragon's notepad or Google Chrome.

Obviously I don't want to have to say "Cap" after each period.

Voice command to output "\ref{}" in Dragon Dictate 4

I want to define a voice command that outputs "\ref{}" in Dragon Dictate 4. When I define the following voice command:

Banners on Do not Disturb

I just got a new iPhone 5S and I've been trying to adapt it to my needs. I do remember that on my 4S, I only switched between silent (with vibrate) and do not disturb modes. When I was using the phone on do not disturb, it did not vibrate but a banner appeared when I received a new SMS or Whatsapp.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce this on my new phone. Now it seems that I have to choose, when in do not disturb mode, between a completely silent phone (no vibrate and no banners) or a vibrating phone + banners when I receive new messages...

Can you help me?

What is "secd" process on OSX (Yosemite)

I wonder what secd process does under OSX Yosemite. I am pretty sure I have seen this process running in earlier MacOS versions, but I don't remember it gobbling up all the available memory so boldly...

I have three computers running Yosemite, each with a different config. All three have been up for a duration of three days to one week. Here is a run down of what secd has achieved:

• On MacBookAir 2011 with 4GB of memory, 700MB allocated to secd


• On iMac 2008 with 6GB of memory, 2GB allocated to secd


• On iMac 2011 with 12GB of memory, 4GB allocated to secd

On all three computers secd is the largest process in memory (larger than kernel task) and I suspect it plays a role in the slowdown I have recently experienced with the arrival of Yosemite. I know for sure that the process expands in memory to inordinate sizes and frees up memory when I need it somewhere else. The only issue is that it is not as quick in freeing up memory and most of the time performance suffers before the process realizes it has to retreat.

My search around the web didn't come to a solid conclusion as for what the process is, and why it should be so huge. I guess I am not the only one experiencing this. Any tip is appreciated.

Is it possible to tell if an iPhone had ever been jailbroken?

I have heard that updating iPhone iOS versions will eliminate jailbreaks. Is it possible to tell if an iPhone updated in such a fashion had been jailbroken at one point?

MacBook Pro running Yosemite corrupting iphone 4 during restore

Every time attempt to restore my iPhone 4 using Yosemite it either crashes immediately or shortly afterward. This was not the case under maverick is there any way to revert. My iPhone is stable now after running restore against a mini using snow leopard. But my best backups are on my MacBook pro.

Bootcamp: Insert Boot disk error

Ok so I have been trying all day using all sorts of ISO's that I can find but I run through the process in Boot Camp Assistant ensuring that all three options are selected and I point to my ISO but after the system restarts I just get the "No bootable device" error.

I can access my OSX partition by holding alt/option at startup, Windows also appears here but selecting it just results in the same "No bootable device" error.

I have a mid 2011 mac mini (no cd/dvd drive), OSX Yosemite. I had no issue with Mavericks.

Used Air Drop to move a folder with mp3 files in it to my phone. Where are they now?

I moved some mp3s to my iPhone using AirDrop expecting they would be available in the Music app, but I can't seem to find them. Where should they be?

There was no error or anything saying the files didn't go through. It appears as if they have been copied to my phone.

Swipe between pages doesn't work and unable two fingers scrolling up/down

In web browsers, in order to jump from the current page to the previous or the next page one can use the two-finger left or right scrolling. Since this morning, this functionality doesn't work anymore on my computer!

Web-browser specific description of the problem

Google Chrome

When I try to swipe between pages on Google Chrome, it just does not work. The window get shifted within its frame and come back to its original position.

Safari

When I try to swipe between pages on Safari, the window slightly shifts within its frame and get stuck into this position. Further two-finger movements (including scrolling up and down) are then not functioning. When I open a new window, the scrolling up/down is working again.

Firefox

When I try to swipe between pages on Firefox, nothing happen and further two-finger movements (including scrolling up and down) are then not functioning. When I open a new window, the scrolling up/down is working again.

How I tried to solve this issue

I opened system preferences to make sure that in the section trackpad, the option swipe between pages is activated. Yes, it is activated!

For some reason, I checked the always box next to Show scroll bars in the general section in the system preferences.

In Bash I wrote the following command line:

defaults write -g com.apple.trackpad.scrollBehavior 2

What is happening when time machine refuses to travel for Chrome local storage?

I wanted to retrieve a backup of /Users/MYNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Local Storage.

however, TM seems to be claiming that the entire folder came into existence about 30 minutes ago, which is not likely; I've been using Chrome for years.

MacBook Pro internal screen issue

my son tripped and dropped his MacBook Pro. One corner of the screen is now black - looks like a crack on the inside. Apple told me it would most likely be about $500 to fix. Are there any other solutions? It works fine, just the screen.

iTunes will not add some mp3 files

I own several albums from the same band and want to import all of the .mp3 files into iTunes (v. 12.0.1.26). However, iTunes will not add a few songs from 3 of the albums. All of the other songs were imported without a problem except for these few.

I have tried using "Automatically Add to iTunes" in Finder as well as "Add to Library..." in iTunes for these files. When attempting the former, the files are placed in the "Not Added" sub-folder. With the latter, nothing happens (I check by going to My Music => Songs and sort by Date Added to see if any new files show up regardless of expected ID3 information).

The problem files play normally with Quicktime and VLC player.

My Mac is caught up on all software updates.

Applescript to replace string using sed

I need and Applescript to replace some text as follow:

I can do it in the terminal with this command:

By the way, i'm using bash version 4.3.30 and sed 4.2.2, both from homebrew.

The issue here is that I need to do it from an applescript. This is my approach:

And I get the following error:

No Applications after Backup recovery

I used to backup my data via Airport Time Capsule and configured my backup, so that no Applications are part of the backup. In case of a broken HDD etc. I would prefer to install only those applications I really need and not all the other legacy crap which comes with the time...

Now the time has come and I've got a "new" (late 2012) Macbook Pro. I powered it on and set it up just as usual. After the first boot I opened the Migration Assistent in order to recover my backup from the time capsule. Somehow nothing happened after entering the APT credentials for my Account, so I tried it with the CMD+R mode during the boot process.

This worked just fine. I entered my credentials and the recovery process began. After completion the MBP restarted and I had a normal desktop with all my files. My backup recovered.

Unfortunately now there is no "Applications" directory in my User dir. There are also no applications like "Safari.app" or even "System Preferences.app". When I try to change the Desktop Background (which I thought would open the System Preferences) nothing happens. All Dock-Items are represented by an "?" - except Finder which seems to be the only app which is still there.

I booted the system via CMD+S in order to search for those applications. find . -name "Safari.app" had no results. As a proof that find works I searched for a file I know that exists in my backup: find . -name "certain_file.jpg" and I had a correct result. I don't even have a terminal (except the CMD+S shell).

The MBP was shipped with OS X Yosemite and apparently the system recovered without any Applications.

What now? How can I get at least all my standard applications?

MacBook Pro late 2011 had GPU problems

I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 and yesterday my external screen suddenly showed glitches on the screen; much like the screenshots you see from other 2011 MacBook Pro's that have a failing GPU.

As I work with the lid closed, I opened the lid and closed it again and the problem would disappear for a few minutes. I then disconnected my external screen and tried my MacBook pro's build in screen. After working with that for an hour it also started to show glitches. These did not go away after opening and closing the lid.

Becoming more and more annoyed I decided to reset the PRAM, and low and behold, it didn't work. So I went on with resetting the SMC. This is when the real problems started. My MacBook pro now booted up into a grey screen after loading for a bit.

Using Single-User mode I tried repairing the SSD with fsck -fy, this didn't help. Slowly I had to come to the conclusion that it most likely was a dedicated GPU hardware failure.

Then, suddenly my MacBook pro decided that it would want to boot up in Safe Mode, however, after a few minutes vertical and horizontal lines showed up again.

So, I decided to turn off the dedicated GPU by moving the kernel extensions into another folder. This worked but made everything very slow. After putting everything back, I decided to follow the following instructions:

Having followed every instruction, including letting my MacBook overheat, my notebook was still slow.

Now, here is the thing, after putting all kernel extensions back into place and restoring everything back to normal, the notebook suddenly started normally at full speed using the dedicated graphics card.

Until now I have not experienced any problems (few hours later). At first I thought that it might be because of the gfxCardStatus software, so I deleted that in order to replicate the problem. However, my MacBook is still running fine now and I seem not to be able to replicate the problem.

My Question

   Can it be that all my problems were caused by a badly behaving SMC and that there is nothing wrong with the dedicated GPU?

Facetime - iPhone/Laptop connection issues

I have a macbook air with Yosemite 10.10.1 and an iPhone with updated software (8.1.1). When someone calls (voice call) me I used to be able to answer it on my laptop and have a conversation. Now, my laptop still rings and I can talk to them but I cant hear them. Their voice is going through my phone speaker. How do I get it fixed so I can make and receive calls on my laptop again? Any suggestions?

I have an iPhone 4s that was given to me, and the iCloud account that's on it was spelled incorrectly. But I know all the information linked with the account. How do I change the iCloud email? Every time I click on iCloud it gives me the loading icon and it won't let me click on anything . Help please?

Is there a way to share iCloud storage between family members?

I included my wife's iPhone into Family sharing, but I would like to have one storage bucket (20G) that would allow us both backup more then default 5G per device. Is it possible?

OS X 10.10 Yosemite/Server 4.0 outbound encrypted server communications problem

Since updating to OS X 10.10 Yosemite/Server 4.0, lots of things related to outbound encrypted server communications that worked just fine under OS X 10.9.x Mavericks/Server 3.x are broken.

For example, WordPress Jetpack refused to authenticate. This was resolved by adding define( 'JETPACK_CLIENT__HTTPS', 'NEVER' ); to the wp-config.php file.

Similarly, Jetpack's Related Posts module refused to work until I changed a line of code from an https:// reference to http://

A more general example is that none of my VPN connections were working until I migrated everything from L2TP and PPTP to OpenVPN.

Now I'm trying to get another piece of code working that uses my Google Developer API key to access Google's Web Fonts. The specific error that I'm getting is: "Error fetching Google font: SSLRead() return error -9806" I tried changing the https:// reference in the code to http:// but Google won't accept this.

Any ideas?

Yosimite Detects Faulty RAM Module but Apple Hardware Test Does not?

I just bought a used MacPro3,1 on Amazon. The system came with Mac OS X 10.6 but I downloaded Yosimtie and it states that one of the 2GB modules is faulty.

When I installed Yosemite it wiped out diagnostics for Apple Hardware Test (AHT) but this isn't a big deal as it can be downloaded and booted from USB for particular Mac models. When I ran the AHT in extended testing mode (a test that runs for two hours) it states that I don't have any issues:

iOS6 used to have the option to disable automatic connection to specific Wifi networks. This is gone in later versions of iOS yet is crucial in urban areas with abundant open web login networks in cafés etc. Has anyone figured out a hack, a third party app or so, to bring back this crucial feature?

Internet searches turn up nothing, only other questions of the same fact, and answers saying "the asker is an idiot and this is standard behaviour on all mobile devices and how things should be". Maybe this attitude stems from different culture -- the US culture from where the tech companies offering substandard products come from -- where there are perhaps few weblogin networks? But in Europe the situation is different. It is frustrating to have internet stop working on the street, because instead of 3G, the phone has connected to a web login network radiating from the nearby café, e.g., the very common _TheCloud in the UK. At the same time, having wifi enabled is crucial, because even at my home in the centre of an important university town there is in practise no 3G -- not to even speak of LTE, for which I would not pay on this island that has worse signal quality than the third-world countries I've visited. In many cafés in particular there is no 3G reception, and a frequent need to use _TheCloud. The option of manually forgetting a network after each use is a purely unusable alternative, moving the task of remembering from the device to the user – yet IT should ease our lives, and have an option that needs to be set only once and forgot!

Multicoloured circle of death since Yosemite

I have had my Macbook Pro MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 for about 3 years now and it has gradually got a bit slower in responding. I have a very fast internet connection (speedtest 5 mins ago 79Mbs download) and i use chrome. The internet can be very slow on my machine with entries I have typed taking a few seconds to appear on screen. Other functions such as loading programmes also produces the dreaded multicoloured circle. It is very frustrating. It seems to have got worse since I installed yosemite. I was always pretty savvy about Windows, but I'm still floundering a bit with OSX. Any help much appreciated. I'd buy some software if it would help speed things up. I've even thought about swapping to a solid state hard drive.

How to add a 2nd account to receive imessages

My wife and I just bought an iPad and I set it up using my iCloud account info. Is it possible to have her receive text messages also.

Is there a "bulk send camera photos to email" app?

I very often use my phone to take photos and transfer them to my computer, either via email or usb cable.

However, it takes a lot of time and manual work to do the transfer. E.g. trying to email using the default "Photos" app only allows up to 5 pictures per transfer.

Is there an app that allows us to bulk transfer camera photos to our emails?

For example, if I select 50 photos, the app will automatically calculate how many photos it can fit per email (since each email message will have a 25 mb limit) and email me x amount of emails containing all the 50 photos.

The only absolute requirements are:

I have deleted all photos from my iPhone 4s but phone usage and iTunes still show 16gb of photos

I had 25gb of photos on a 4s phone I deleted a whole heap directly from the phone and then deleted a whole heap more through windows explorer. I have deleted all photos but phone usage and iTunes is still showing 16gb of photos. I backed up the image and imported it to a new 5s and it is now showing 16gb (and 458 photos) on the new phone. iCloud and all the synch type settings are off. When I go to photos all albums are completely empty. I have done countless soft and hard resets but I can't get rid of this phantom 16gb of used photo storage. I've also tried countless suggested fixes from web searches but nothing is working. Does anyone have the right answer for me?

Where (how) can I print exported Cards (or books) from iPhoto

I designed a holiday greeting card in iPhoto (which is great) but I wanted to see if there was a cheaper option for printing. I'm able to export the card as a PDF by CTRL + right-clicking on the background

I tried to then upload my PDF to fedex-kinkos to see if they would do the printing but they said its a non-standard size and I couldn't make much progress.

Has anybody had experience with a 3rd party printer using iPhoto designed cards or books?
