So I got a new iPad. Which I would like to setup with iMessage same as my current iPad. When I set it up it asks if I would like to set as a restore backup. I think I want to do this but I don't want to effect my current iPad in any way. Is that how this works? It mirrors my current iPad but does not change my current iPad in any way?

How does disk utility work while the system is live? (e.g. partitioning/resizing the OSes partition)
How is it that Disk Utility allows you to resize the partition that OS X is botted from live, while the OS is running? Can there be problems doing this? I would have thought that booting into recovery mode to do these things would be a requirement.
Here's what I mean, Disk Utility will allow me to "Apply" this change while booted in OS X:
I'm not sure whether clicking the "Apply" button is something safe to do while the OS is live. Is it? If so, how/why?
Time after startup is 11 hours ahead of what it should be in OSX Yosemite
I have a Macbook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011 running OSX Yosemite 10.10.2. When I start it up, the time is always 11 hours ahead of what it should be. But when I then enter the Date and Time Preferences, the time shifts back to where it needs to be.
For example:
When it's 2pm on the 7th of March 2015, it'll say it's 1am on the 8th of March.
How can I fix this? I tried switching the Automatic Time, but that didn't do anything and I don't want to disable the automatic setting due to DST. Also I tried search 'osx yosemite time is wrong after startup', but that didn't yield anything useful.
Yosemite Messages Screen Sharing Disabled
I'm trying to screen share on from within the Messages app with another iMessage user. We're both on Yosemite, and we've successfully used Messages's new screen sharing feature many times. One day, we discovered the screen share button was disabled. It has never come back.
Screen sharing is enabled in the Video menu, and we are both on the most recent version of Yosemite. I'm not sure how to look for answers without even an error message to go on.
Timezone in Calendar
I am planning an international flight. I have the flight details, with local departure times and arrival time at destination. I have entered these into my Calendar.
Due to the differences in timezone this appears as an 8 hour trip, when in reality is is 19.
Is there a way to enter timezone so the duration shows correctly and so when I adjust my timezone on arrival, it will show the correct local time.
I have turned on timezone support, but there seems to be no way to have a different timezone for start/end times.
Partition SSD in Yosemite for Dual-Booting Ubuntu
I've just bought a new Macbook Air (running Yosemite) and I am trying to create a partition from my Macintosh HD SSD for dual-booting Ubuntu. However when I try to create a partition in Disk Utilities, I keep getting the error "This Core Storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume group." I have tried restarting the system in Recovery Mode and verifying and repairing the disk, but it did not work. What can I do to partition? (I would prefer to not format the SSD.)
Flashing folder icon appeared once after changing Macbook hard drive
About 2 weeks ago, I updated my late 2011 Macbook Pro hard drive to a Crucial MX100 solid state drive. The drive installation and data migration went fine with no issues, but today I found the computer in a state where the screen just showed the "flashing folder" icon indicating an issue with the main boot disk. I restarted the computer in recovery mode and verified the disk, and Disk Utility said the disk was fine, with no issues. I then rebooted into Mac OS X (Yosemite 10.10.2) as normal and the computer is working fine.
Is there any reason why this would suddenly happen like this? Are there any hard drive related settings I should change on my system now that I have changed to a solid state drive from a magnetic drive?
Can't access password protected smb share
I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Router with an attached HDD which I'm trying to access with the ReadyShare feature. I've created 3 shared folders:
- no_pass
- pass_write
- pass_read
The problem is that while I can access 1 fine, I can't connect to 2 or 3 in finder because I'm getting a permission denied error. When connecting to server, I've tried each of the following (with and without the shared folder names):
- smb://readyshare(/)
I can connect to all the folders using http or ftp so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the shares...
Any idea what's going on here?

Undo changed Calendar event
I spent some time entering a Calendar event on my Mac. I was viewing on my iPhone, and somehow "moved" it around. Can I undo this?
How can I automate pasting of password into SecurityAgent?
On OS X 10.8.x I had an Automator service set up to paste a password from clipboard into the password window that pops up for mounting an encrypted disk.
I don't wish to store the password in my keychain, and it is long and tedious to type out.
I never got the applescript within the Automator service quite right. It would generate an error, but it still got the job done (i.e. the password was pasted). Since upgrading to Yosemite it seems the script in the Automator service doesn't work at all. The error generated indicates "window 1" doesn't exist.
Here is what I had:
tell application "System Events" to tell process "SecurityAgent"
set value of text field 1 of window 1 to (the clipboard)
if exists (text field 2 of window 1) then
set value of text field 2 of window 1 to (the clipboard)
end if
click button 1 of group 1 of window 1
end tell
I don't recall where I got this from, but some of it may have come from here
I know very little about AppleScript, and would appreciate some help fine tuning (or completely rewriting) this script so that it does the following:
- Checks there is data in the clipboard
- Checks the SecurityAgent window is active (or in some way ensures it can be interacted with, to avoid generating an error)
- Pastes the content of clipboard
- Clicks the 'Unlock' button
I don't know if it is possible, but it would be handy if it also brought 1Password to the foreground and activated "Copy password" (which is a menu option in the "Items" menu). I can, however, have Automator actions perform that task. But it would be nice to see (for learning) how to achieve that with AppleScript.
How to determine whether the thermal paste needs re-application?
How can I determine whether the heat sink is no longer firmly heat-tied to the CPU?
This appears to be the case for a seven year old MacBook, but I'd like to confirm without going to the trouble of re-applying the thermal paste just to find out that the old CPU (a core 2 duo) will indeed trigger the fan even for simple tasks.
I am looking for a recipe such as: Running a given process on a MacBook with a core 2 duo in a room with ambient temperature of 20C will not trigger the fans for at least 10 minutes.
In retrospect it's solvable. I can now run various jobs on each new MacBook and determine which processes trigger the fan. The same recipes should continue to work for the lifetime of a machine. If you have a core 2 duo and you can describe a specific testing recipe, please do.
Script to relocate the menu-bar on dual monitors set-up
Is there a script that could be written to achieve this: In System Preferences/Displays... is it possible to relocate the menu bar ...via a script? My set-up is one monitor and a Cintiq. I either work only with the Cintiq, or I work with my 28" monitor several times a day. I always need to go to do this manually. I really wish there was a script that can do this. I tried Automator, but it's not recording the action. :(
Use English layout when open Spotlight

Deleting an update downloaded from App Store that is not installed
I now run OS X 10.9.5 on my office laptop, which is monitored by my company. App Store alerted me about Yosemite, and I chose to download and install it. After download completed, I got a notification saying that my company does not support Yosemite and the installation was terminated.
Now Yosemite shows up in App Store as "DOWNLOADED" as shown below, and I get notification asking me to install it every day. How can I remove the downloaded file and/or stop receiving this notification?
MBA mid 2011 with Bootcamp Win7-HP: changed text size, now desktop Black, but will display Taskmgr
As title says, I have bootcamp installed on MBA (mid 2011) using Win7 HP. Both OS were working fine until I tried to increase the text size on the Win side by doing a Rt-Click on the desktop. Now the screen is black with only the mouse showing. If I use one of several keyboard shortcuts, the expected window is displayed properly, eg Taskmgr or Command-p to display the projector option. One keyboard combination (I've tried many) brought up a Chrome browser window and it behaves normally and appears to have a normal resolution. But the taskbar is not present nor is there a Start button, etc. When I minimize the browser, the screen goes black as before.
What can I do to get the normal Win7 desktop to display?

Fix formatted GPT in SSD
I accidentally formatted my SSD's GPT while formatting a USB in Linux's gparted. Now, when running gpt
in Mac's command line, this is how my SSD looks like:
My-MacBook-Pro:~ user$ sudo gpt -r show disk2
start size index contents
0 1 PMBR
1 1 Pri GPT header
2 32 Pri GPT table
34 1000215149
1000215183 32 Sec GPT table
1000215215 1 Sec GPT header
I used to have 2 partitions on this drive: Mac OSX and a Windows 8.1 bootcamp partition. I wouldn't mind loosing the latter.
I have heard about being able to restore the partition with the gpt
command in Mac. Is this possible in my case?
Thanks, Martin
Yosemite upgrade–continuous slow screen redraw
I recently upgraded to Yosemite, and now my laptop has the following issue:
Each and every window (the AppStore, Chrome, etc) seems to be continuously and very slowly redrawn, to the point where I can see the screen go white, and then slowly be drawn back in from the bottom to the top.
The only time when I every encountered a similar issue was when, on Ubuntu, I upgraded and lost support for my graphics card. However, I have no idea how to navigate this issue on OS X.
Gnuplot with xterm in yosemite
I installed gnuplot on my yosemite system using brew. When I try to plot cos(x)
the way I would on ubuntu, I get this:
gnuplot> plot cos(x)
WARNING: Plotting with an 'unknown' terminal.
No output will be generated. Please select a terminal with 'set terminal'.
I also notice that when gnuplot loads, it says Terminal type set to 'unknown'
. I would like to load the graphs in a new window, so I tried set terminal xterm
, which seems to work at first glance, given the message Terminal type set to 'xterm'
. But then I try plotting again, and it produces garbage:
How do I get the terminal to function correctly, as it does on ubuntu?
How often can a user rate an iOS app?
There are 2 rating dialogs in the AppStore, one for the current version and one for all versions. Does that mean that a user can rate every update of an iOS app?
How to uninstall Java 1.8 under OS X 10.10 Yosemite?

I have just changed my Apple ID, but made a typing error. No verification. Not searchable via find my Apple ID
Just logged in to amend settings on my Apple ID. When entering new email, must have typed it wrong. Never received verification and now can't log back in. Can't 'find Apple ID' as I don't know what my typo was.
How else can I retrieve it as am now logged out on all my devices.
Junk mail filter for iPhone via imap
I have: Mac Book Pro running OS X 10.10.2 iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.1.3
On my computer I run Mail, which checks the email every 1 min. On my iPhone it runs every 15 mins. So most of the time, my computer receives the email first and filters the message so my phone never gets the junk mail. However when my computer is sleeping my iphone normally gets the email first and does not perform the filter for the junk mail.
Options: 1) Force the computer not to sleep 2) Write a script to run while sleeping asking mail query the server (I'm not sure how hard this would be) 3) Ask here and see if someone has a better idea.

Apple AppStore - Factors to get listed in "Customers Also Bought"?

How to change Home / End behaviour on Yosemite
I want to change Home / Keys to work like Windows/Linux.
Home to Cmd+Left Arrow. //not control+A
End to Cmd+Right Arrow. //not control+E
I tried using Karabiner app known as KeyRemap4MacBook. But it doesn't work while i write code on editors. It works on browser but useless for me.
I also did. Create a DefaultKeyBindings.dict
file (with proper settings) inside ~/Library/KeyBindings/
. There was not a folder name KeyBindings
on Yosemite.
So, is there a way to remap Home/End
buttons. This is sucking my energy, and takes a lot of time. I am about to smash my mac.

Using variables in pathnames and pathname variable help plus finding username applescript?
So, I want to have my script to be able to find out the current user's username and store it in a variable (myUsername). If any clarification is needed, I will reply.
Jumpy multitouch
After some random amount of time (and sleep-wake cycles) multitouch on my laptop became very jumpy. All multitouch actions start to perform only after I take away fingers after swipe. For example, both on external and internal trackpads scrolling became very hard when this bug appears because I need to replace single big swipe with many short ones.
System reboot or killing WindowsServer process (or just logout, not sure) normalize multitouch behaviour, but only for some amount of time.
Scrolling with other devices (like logitech mouse) works fine, so I think it's something with trackpad software.

iTunes Connect - Are app related trademarks allowed as keyword?

One Contact Receiving My Messages Under An Email, Not My Contact Name
My iMessage is working with all iPhone users, except with a specific contact. iMessage is working with this contact, except that he is only able to receive my iMessages as my email address and not from my phone number. I use my email as my ID for both iPad and iPhone. I have my send & receive settings set to only my phone number, so when i try to send an iMessage to this contact, it automatically fails to deliver. Anything i can do about it? Is it something to do with his settings or mine?
Which minimum hardware for Smartalbums
I need to use SmartAlbums for my job, but I don't yet have a Mac. I am willing to buy a 2°hand Apple computer to run SmartAlbums but I don't want to overbudget it.
There is anyone that uses this software here and can tell me on which hardware and OS it runs good enough to be usable?
Start/Stop Internet Sharing via Terminal in Yosemite w/out using AppleScript
Okay, I see this question has been asked a few times before (here, here, here and here), but none of those really answer the question for me.
I don't want to use the AppleScript suggestions provided to enable/disable Internet Sharing since future updates to the System Preferences GUI may break the AppleScript, as was the case in the linked posts above, and the solution seems a little clumsy, to be honest.
On Yosemite, sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.InternetSharing.plist
no longer works as there's no longer a .plist
called InternetSharing
.
I tried sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.nat NAT -dict-add Enabled -int 1
which I saw somewhere else, but that only toggles the actual checkbox in System Preferences and doesn't actually enable IS.
So ultimately, my question is this. What processes do I have to call from the command line to enable Internet Sharing, or conversely, what processes do I have to kill to disable Internet Sharing?
Text to speech service gone and key binding for it not functioning in Yosemite?
Up until Yosemite I have always had a a text to speech service menu option and have been able to readily use a command key combination to trigger the reading of selected text in just about any application.
Under System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Services
, looking under the Text subsection, there is nothing there to enable for text-to-speech. Further, System Preferences -> Dictation & Speech -> Text to Speech
has "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" enabled and a key combination set and this key command simply doesn't work (and yes, even when I change this to another set of keys).
Neither of these have functioned properly for me since my initial usage of Yosemite this past summer and I am curious as to whether others have found a solution.
Does anyone:
- Know how one can make TTS appear in the service menu again and
- Have you figured out a way to make the key combination work reliably in applications?
Unable to delete IMAP mail account in Yosemite
I have an IMAP mail account in the Apple Mail client that I want to delete. I first goto the Accounts preferences pane in Mail. When I click the minus icon to delete the account, I get a message about having to do it in Internet Accounts.
However, when I goto Internet Accounts, the email account isn't listed. I see all of my mail accounts except for this particular one.
How can I delete this mail account?
Thanks!
OS X: Memory usage freaking me out
I know, OS X memory management knows what it does, it is good, you shouldn't question it. But this, I do not understand. I have 16GB of RAM, 6 GB used, plus 2.5GB app-cache, 1GB file-cache and 1.5GB reserved is a total of 11GB used memory. But form some reason, I have 1GB of compressed memory and about .5GB of used swap. Whenever the system starts to use swap, it get's noticeably laggy. Because of this, I have to reboot about once a day.
What do I miss here? Why swap? Why compressed memory? Why lag?
Maybe there are some clevererer people than me around here. Any answer as to WHY is greatly appreciated.

How to preconfigure wifi on Mac OS X (Yosemite)?
Does anyone knows a way to preconfigure a WPA2 wifi network on Mac OS X (Yosemite) ?
I'm preparing an iMac for a friend and would like to setup his home wifi while currently far away from the network.
I know all the wifi parameters (SSID, security, key) but can't manage to validate the manual setup through the AirPort wizard. I also tried to manually add the entry in Keychains but can't manage to add the confirmation exceptions on "airportd" and "AirPort" binaries in the ACL part.
Thus, I can't setup transparently and remotely the wifi connection.
Thanks for your help.

Recover corrupted Mac HFS+ drive (image) under Linux
I'm trying to recover an apparently corrupted disk. It appears that through improper shutdown the drive has been somehow killed. It's the main partition of a Macbook Pro.
I've used dd
