Backup Mac with terminal

I would like to backup my Mac using terminal along with viewing the output.

I have tried tmutil startbackup --block --auto however it does not seem to work, however if I do tmutil start backup then it will.

I would prefer if it would not move onto the next command if the backup has not finished.

Sorry if this belongs to SO. I have posted it here since it is specific with Apple Macs.
