Asus VS278 not recognizing MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display

I have an Asus VS278 monitor and have it hooked up to my MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display via a VGA to DVI adapter and then a DVI to HDMI cord. The Mac recognizes the monitor but the VGA input on the monitor says, "No Signal Found". Please help.

Restore parts of time machine backup

I currently have a MacBook Pro that I'm using at work, but it has now become so slow that I wish to do a reinstall of the OS. It has a recovery partition that offers such a reinstall. I do not want all the content back onto my computer after the reinstall, but I want to keep my time machine backup in case I forgot some important files.

Is there an option so that I some time in the future could be able to get files from an old TM backup?

Got my funds on an international debit card frozen trying to order on apple. What to do?

About 2 weeks ago, I was trying to place an order for an Macbook Air on Apple and right when it comes to pay, they refused my debit card stating that they don't accept international cards. I then tried to order the product on amazon and they refused the payment. Called the bank and they said I just made a purchase of about a thousand dollars from apple. Told them that apple declined the card so that didn't make any sense. They asked for an email of cancellation for the fund to be available again. I got on the phone with apple and they said they have no record of my debit card number within their system. I thought maybe they were some mistake in the number or something so I tried the live chat for more accuracy (since english is not my first language) but they said live chat wasn't available to my location (Haiti).

I see no way to contact apple other than by phone and it's expensive and ineffective for me. The bank told me it could take as long as 3 months for the fund to be available again and I can't wait that much to get the computer since I need it for work.

What to do? How can I get an apple representative to follow through with me or at least get that cancellation email the bank is asking for? Or least have an email address where I can address the issue?

Is there a tool or scripting approach to change the arrangement of displays?

I move my monitors around a bit during the day. Specifically I rotate them or move my laptop to different positions. Each time I have to open up System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement and make the corresponding changes.

I'm looking for a tool or AppleScript approach for quickly setting a displays arrangement so I can quickly switch to proper arrangement.

Note I am not looking for a window management tool (plenty of those listed in What Window Management Options exist for OS X?).

Sudo Shutdown Now on Mavericks

I had read that you can "quietly shut down to single user mode" by running, within terminal:

sudo shutdown now

This sounds far preferable to having to restart the computer and hold CMND+S. However - at least in Mavericks it doesn't seem to work.

I'm getting:

shutdown: -h, -r, -s, or -k is required
usage: shutdown [-] [-h [-u] [-n] | -r [-n] | -s | -k] time [warning-message ...]

I thought that anything within square brackets was optional.

When I run it with the -k flag (which kicks all users off): sudo shutdown -k now, the output is:

Then if I try to open a new terminal:

in-app purchases do not work in my accepted app [swift] [ios8]

I coded an app with in-app purchases. Everything was good. I configured the sandbox and tested everything. Everything was perfectly fine. I uploaded the app to itunes connect and the app has been accepted. But the in-app purchases are not within the app! They still are 'Ready to submit' why? Can I activate them in some way?

Photoshop file "could not save..." "...because write access was not granted"

I've been seeing this error a lot lately:

Could not save [file] because write access was not granted

I've checked all the standard reasons why permission to save a file might be denied:

• The file is not open in any other application


• The user does have access to the drive and directory


• No other users on a network are accessing the file


• The file is not read-only


• No other save operations are happening


• The connection to the drive is fine

I've seen this happen on Lion and Mavericks. I've only ever seen it on a Mac, and only ever with Photoshop, with .PSD files.

Looking for an app to create icon size art

Can I ask a for a recommendation for an app. I am looking for a user friendly app that I can use to make, resize, and save in jpeg and png format, icon size art. Being new to Apple I have no idea. Free would be good too. Many thanks.

Why do downloaded applications arrive as .dmg files

When downloading most applications from websites they are usually packaged into dmg files.

Is there any specific reason why people distribute apps in dmg files instead of zip files?

If so why do some apps still packaged as .zip?

I have a terminal shortcut on my dock which I use every day. Depending on my monitor setup (extra, 2 extra, etc.) to my Macbook Pro, I like to have a different launching scheme (either 4 windows or 5 windows).

Is there a way to have 2 (or more) terminal launchers on the dock, one which launches the "4 windows" setup and one which launches the "5 windows" setup?

Locate webpage processes (to kill them when reach memory limit)

Lately I'm suffering memory issues on Safari. Every few time the opened webpages start eating memory. See the example image.

I'm thinking of creating a script to kill those webpages when reach a memory limit defined by me, but I'm not able to locate those process. I tried top, htop and ps commands without success. How can I locate such processes?

Will the Air be released on Feb 24?

There are many rumours that say the new 2015 MacBook Air could come out on February the 24th, however, some also say that there is not going to be a Apple event then. Does anyone have any idea if it would come out on Feb 24th or will it come out in June along with the WWDC?

Only purchased music shown on iphone, no playlists visible, cannot delete songs on iPhone

Today, I plugged my iPhone into my laptop to add new music which wasn't downloaded from iTunes. When I view my music in iTunes it shows that it is on the phone along with all other non-purchased music and my playlists. However, when I use my phone all playlists have gone along with all non-purchased music. Additionally, I can no longer remove songs directly from my phone - when I swipe to delete nothing happens.

I do not subscribe to iTunes Match which seems to be the problem to a similar issue.

Applescript to update MP3 Spotlight tag from iTunes tag

Here is my situation. I have a large iTunes library that has songs tagged with the "Year" in iTunes. I have a Hazel Rule for the noodlesoft hazel software which reads from Finder's "Year Recorded" metatag. I would like an applescript that can recursively for all tracks selected read the iTunes "Year" track and embed it into the file's "Year Recorded" metadata so Finder/Spotlight will then see that information. I saw this: Applescript to update year tag for audio files but it is not what I need. Any help on this would be highly appreciated!

Setting Work Schedule with Outlook an half hour boundaries

We use Outlook at work for scheduling. By default, the work schedule is 9AM to 5PM. You can easily change this to other hours under Preferences, but you are limited to full hour boundaries. I can't, for example, change my start time to 8:30AM, I can only choose 8AM or 9AM.

Is there is away to set a start time and end time on half hour boundaries?

I'm trying to submit a Java-based app to AppStore. After having the worst headaches in my life trying to sign everything my last problem (I hope!) is this:

I am having a strange problem where my 'About this mac' > ' Storage' is showing that I Have 470gb of Apps install on a 250gb SSD.

I have used 3rd party disk scanners and they are all showing the correct data. Any idea what this issue is?

How to remotely push "defaults write" settings to OS X server clients

I have some Mac OSX machines that i'm managing with an OS X server, clients are authenticated using Active Directory (golden triangle) and i'd like to disable version control for Pages/Numbers/Keynote as it doesn't work well with user profiles stored on an SMB share,

The commands that achieve this are as follows:

This setting appears to be per-user

I tried to save these into a logon script file with .sh extension, I chmod+x the file to allow me to import it into OS X server but it doesn't work :(

There's a section in OSX server under preferences which has a load of .plist files in there but I couldnt find any good documentation on how to use it ... and I can't locate the plist file for Pages itself..

Is using a key shortcut for restart (Cmd + Ctrl + Power) bad in any way?

I restart my Mac (for various reasons) often, about once a day. Recently I found about the key shortcut to do this: Cmd + Ctrl + Power. I really like this because it's fast and avoids that annoying prompt about "reopening windows when coming back".

My question: is using key shortcut Cmd + Ctrl + Power forceful, aggressive or potentially damaging in any way (like losing recent data)? Or, it is the same thing as doing it by clicking the menu options ( -> Restart... -> Restart).

How can I restart the Notification Center?

Numbers.app - How to add up items from multiple sheets and popup lists

Based on the "Personal Budget" template:

I want to use the Personal Budget template and modify it to my needs — I want a total sheet that will add up information from 12 data sheets (for each month). The template example has a total page and 1 data sheet by default.

What would the formula be to get data for a category, across multiple sheets? In my case all 12 data sheets?

For example: A8 is "Travel" SUMIF Jan::Transactions::Category,A8,Jan::Transactions::$Amount)

This gives me the amount of all "travel" expenses for the sheet "Jan" but how would I have the combined total for Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec?

What would the formula look like?

How can I identify files and programs connected to the kernel_task process in Mac OS?

I understand that the kernel_task process is linked to several .kext files found in System/Library/Extensions (and possibly Library/Extensions ?) How can I identify which processes are contributing to the 400+ MB memory usage identified in Activity Monitor? Is there anything I can do to uninstall or delete unneeded processes to reduce memory usage here?

I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on a 15 inch MacBook Pro from early 2011. It has 4 GB of memory.

Creating 2 quarter-sheet sized booklet on single sheet of paper

I need to create/print a booklet that is 1/4 size of a sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper. From this page, How can I print a booklet from a pdf file?, I know I how to create the booklet. But this is larger than I want.

Because this is just a quarter size sheet of paper, I can print two copies of the booklet on a single sheet of paper. I need to know how to automagically make this happen; stack one on top of the other.

How to retrieve a PDF file from an iOS device?

Given two Macs running Yosemite and one iPad running iOS 8, how do you retrieve a PDF file put on the iPad from Mac 1, using Mac 2 ? Let's say that I don't currently have access to the Mac used to put the file in the first place. I can see the file in the Books section of the device in iTunes, but that's all I can do right now.

Killing an application

I try to kill a buggy application without success.

I tried the Force to quit feature from the apple menu but it doesn't work.

I tried the following command from the Terminal but it doesn't match anything:

ps aux | grep -i MyApplicationName

The only way to effectively kill it is to restart the system. Sometime I even have to force restart because the buggy application is preventing the system to restart.

I entered iCloud ID to my iPhone 5 which "Find my iPhone" button was on and someone changed the password. Now every second I use the phone they ask me to sign in to iCloud.

Headphones not being recognised when connected to mackbook pro.

When i plug a headphone into my macbook pro the sound plays from the mac speakers, my headphones work on other devices but doesn't seem to be recognised by my mac?

I have already checked in system preferences but it doesn't show headphones only built in speakers.

Disk Damage and data recovery

My MacBook Pro was working fine until my friend stopped the disk utility from partitioning and force quit the application. Ever since it seems that the problem has grown larger and larger as I used it. Now it boots until the half of the loading bar, stays there, and shuts down after an hour or so. I tried looking at what was happening by doing a (special boot - don't remember the name of it, but it was to show what was happening behind the fancy UI) and it was fine until it said it was repairing the disk and said it failed. I tried Commad-R, it also said the disk could not be repaired, I tried the command-R boot again, now it says that it couldn't connect to the apple support and stops. Any suggestions on booting/ retrieving the data?

How not to have click twice to pause youtube videos

Im a complete new Mac user.

When I have a youtube video playing in safari window, and I'm typing an email in a different safari window, I have to click twice to pause the youtube video, once to focus the window, and once again to actually pause the video. But if I double click the video it will switch to full screen! I have to click twice with a pause...

Is there any configuration I can change so that I only have to click once?

I Googled the problem and I see a lot about "focus follows mouse" plugins, but I'm not sure if that's what I need, I just want the click to go through, instead of a "dedicated focus click", because that doesn't make much sense to me.

I've configured two profiles on my Apple TV. One with a global HTTP proxy (to access YouTube for example) and one with no proxy. But seems like I cannot enable a profile and disable another. All I can do with a profile is to remove it. Anyone can help?

OS X Yosemite permanent environement variables

Since I upgraded to OS X Yosemite I do have massive problems with environment variables that I really, really NEED for development of some projects.

The Problems is:

Every time I install some kind of update from the app store and my macbook restarts in order to install it, it will delete all, but really all of my environment variables which then costs me nearly an hour to set it up again.

I've tried so many different solutions until now (I don't want to start listing them up here, I really searched the www for some hours...) and nothing has worked as permanent/persistent environment variable.

What I need to do:

• System wide environment variables that are NEVER reset without my action. They have to be persistent/permanent!


• Environment variables have to be readable by shell as well as GUI applications

I feel helpless and somehow stupid. It's so easy on all linux distros I know and also in the Windows world. Why does it seem to be so hard for OS X?

iOS 8.1.3 break Safari credit card scanning

Last night my iPhone 4S was running iOS 8.1.2 and safari credit card scanning was working perfectly OK. This morning I upgraded to iOS 8.1.3 and the functionality is now broken.

I created an HTML file containing a simple form asking users to input their credit number, expiry month and expiry year. If you clicked in the credit card field an additional option to scan your card appeared and if you tapped it you could scan your credit card and safari would employ in-built OCR to recognise your card number and auto fill the field. This is no longer working in iOS 8.1.3, as in when I tap on the credit card field, the keyboard option no longer appears.

Here's a link to the test site I created that WAS WORKING last night and not working after the OS upgrade.

Notes: - YES I do have a valid SSL cert on the site (it's NOT self signed) - YES I've set the input elements ID to the correct names (check the page source)

Any advise from anyone on what might have changed here?

Video card doesn't seem to shut down

I'm using a mid-2012 MBP. I've got 2 external monitors hooked up - 1 on each of the DisplayPort ports.

During the day I run Parallels in full-screen mode on one of the external monitors.

At night I move the mouse into the upper-right corner - which is defined as a Hot Corner to put the displays to sleep.

I've noticed that if I shutdown Parallels, or even just take it out of full-screen mode, when I go to use the machine in the morning everything is cold (to the touch) like I would expect it to be.

However, if I leave Parallels running in full-screen, then in the morning the palm-rests are warm and the bit of metal just north of the keyboard (between the keys and the screen) is hot.

My research shows that this is where the Nvidia graphics card is housed - which leads me to believe that the graphics card is not shutting down as it does if nothing is left in full-screen.

So the question is: Is there some setting that can be adjusted to allow the video card to shut down when there is a full-screen app on an external display but the displays are in shutdown mode? If that makes any sense.

Help find what causes MBP reboot in 10.10.2

I have a Mac Book Pro from 2011. I've been updating it to all OSX versions since I bought it and recently I updated to Yosemite. At the time I also changed memory + HDD. I cloned my old drive to the new and swapped them.

Everything worked fine for 2 months but in the last 2 weeks I've had it crashing on me twice. It has never happened before.

Do you have any tips for how I can find what's causing the problem? I've been trying to look in the system.log file but I'm not sure what to look for. There is a lot of output there that doesn't feel quite right though...

Or should I just make my first re-install since I bought instead?

iPhone/iPad sync Exchange calendar

I have an iPhone and an iPad - both use iOS 8.1.3 and both have Exchange on to sync my work calendar and emails.

Both also have a home calender on, and aol personal email.

Recently, my iPhone will not sync the exchange calendar, but my iPad does. Exchange appointments put in last year remain, but new ones made this year will not show in the phone if made in Exchange or show in exchange if made on the phone.

What is going wrong please? I've missed a couple of meetings, until I realised it is now not reliable. Thanks, Sarah

Completely remove an application and its data on iOS 8

I have an application that is not working properly (I always get an error). I know other people who have the same app and for them no errors appears.

I thought that maybe there are temporary data stored and getting rid of them would solve the problem.

As suggested in this answer I tried to remove the app. I tried to delete it in two ways: * By holding my finger on the icon and pressing the x. * And from the menu Settings -> General -> Storage -> Manage Storage.

None of them fixed the problem and I believe that some app data are not removed. I think so because when I remove the app and reinstall it, as soon as I open it I'm already logged in.

Is there a different way of getting rid of app data?
