Resetting printing password

I use a printer on a Windows server configured as

smb://server.domain/printer

as it requires authentication after the first use I had to give my credentials which where then stored in the key chain.

So far so good.

I then had to change my password on the server side. Now OS X refuses to print telling me "Hold for Authentication" With lpq I see:

I deleted the stored password in Key Chain, deleted the job and tried again but I still don't get the dialog asking me for the new password.

Any idea on how to force a new authentication?

Whenever I open the computer the login screen shows up with my account picture and FULL NAME. Is there any way to remove it, or replace it with the account name or something?

Why is the process named geod in my iOS simulator trying to access irs.gov?

I'm developing an app that has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than specific external audio-related hardware. While running my app in the iOS simulator, I got a message from my LittleSnitch (that's a firewall) that the process geod (iOS) is trying to access irs.gov. As if that wasn't enough, the next attempt was to azadiradio.org. I blocked both but I'm wondering: what is going on within my iOS simulator?

tmux hangs when re-attaching session after logout

Since Yosemite, my tmux, which I installed via MacPorts, "hangs" when I re-attach it after my use has logged out and logged in again. I.e. it cannot start new processes, like a new command line. The logs in console do not show anything.

I do not even know how I start to figure out what's happening here.

Disable Confirmation Dialogs in Finder for iCould Drive

Is it possible to disable the confirmation dialog when moving/removing/deleting a file from iCloud Drive? The constant barrage of dialogs is incredibly irritating - I understand that removing the file from iCloud Drive will result in the file being removed from all of my iCloud Devices.

There is no Finder preference that I could find, and a Google search has not yielded anything.

Apple TV stops playing immediately?

I am having an odd issue wherein an Apple TV seems to not play anything. Sometimes it will play a split second of a show in Netflix or an Airplay'd video, but then immediately stops. Likewise, the Radio service just simply won't start playing. Most of the time none of the apps will start playing anything at all.

This seemed to start out of the blue with no apparent provocation or change of settings whatsoever. I have reset all settings and even updated from 7.0.2 -> 7.0.3 to no avail on this issue.

Any ideas as to what may be prompting this kind of behavior?

Increase Number of Recent Applications In Dock

I've enabled the 'Recent Applications' folder to appear in my dock:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'

Is there any way to increase the number from 10 Recent Applications to 15, or preferably, omit specific applications from being in it.

Can't update apps in iOS App Store; can only Open

On my iPhone, the App Store has a badge saying "2". When I open the App Store and go to the Updates page, there are two apps at the top, which for a split-second say "Update" and then immediately change to "Open". But the "2" badge remains. The apps are in the "Pending updates" section.

So I can't even update these apps if I wanted to, because either they have already updated or they are preventing me from updating.

I already tried hard resetting my device but no luck. I'd rather not take the extreme route of restoring my device if possible. Anyone know of any other solutions?

Macbook pro mid 2012 osx yosemite Hard drive error

So i went to go you my macbook the other day and the screen shows nothing but a folder with a question mark flashing. It wont reconize my hard drive? I can still hear it spin up and running so is this still a hard drive issue? I have tried all the recovery and Cmd Opt P start-ups and have still gotten nothing.

Searching for file within Time Capsule

Mavericks OSX 10.9.5. I need to locate a file in the Time Capsule. I can navigate into the directory I want to search in, and using OSX find, I can "search" for a file that is right there and there are no results.

For example navigate to directory Website containing two or three files including index.php and search for "index.php" yields nothing.

I think that I'm not actually navigating to a directory, but that the OS is displaying a virtual directory based on the Time Capsule database.

How does one search for a file within Time Capsule backups?

Xcode giving me warning for GADBannerViewDelegate [migrated]

I'm trying to implement Singular class AdMob banner that would be shared among several ViewControllers.

I'm receiving a warning from Xcode 6.1 and I don't understand why i'm getting the following warning:

'Incompatible pointer types sending 'MyClass* ' to parameter of type "MyOTHERclass ^GADBannerViewDelegate^ *'

I included GADBannerViewDelegate in MyClass.h and MyOTHERclass.h files so I don't know why I'm receiving a delegate warning.

What does this warning want me to do?

Safari extensions corrupted

I'm attempting to install a Safari extension and I'm getting a error that says:

"1Password-4.2.5.safariextz is damaged and can't be open. You should move it to the Trash."

I thought maybe the 1Password was actually corrupted so I tried Ghostery and got the same error.

Free Space Won't Delete

I am running OSX Yosemite. I had free space on my partition, (see picture below) but now it wont delete. I change the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and then when I hit the " + " button it loads for about 1/100 of a second, and then shows on the screen that it partitioned it. When I click away from the partition tab onto the first aid tab, it goes away and becomes free space again. (NOTE: I am trying to MERGE the free space with my first partition, not make a new partition, but i have to make a new one to merge it with my first partition.)

diskutil shows Macintosh HD is missing (with Recovery HD occupying the entire space)

So yesterday I managed to screw up my iMac 2012 (with Fusion Drive) by installing the Mac OS X 10.10.2 update... The installation stalled and when I tried to restore from an external drive using Time Machine I somehow managed to corrupt my hard drive... When I try to reinstall OS X it says I don't have any disks to install it to.

Anyways, now I'm running Disk utility on the command line at boot and I see the Macintosh HD volume has disappeared. Here is a screenshot of diskutil cs list and diskutil list:

It seems that the Recovery HD disk is occupying the entire disk space (3TB). How do I restore Macintosh HD with a new partition so I can finally reinstall OS X?

So I delete the LVG and LG and went to Disk Utility... (See screenshot3) But my disks are in red and DiskUtility is forcing me to fix them... (Screenshot4) And when I do Im back to the same setup... (Screenshot5) what now?

accountsd wants to view my keychain

Every couple hours or so a popup appears that accountsd wants to view my keychain. Inputting my password does no good and I get asked again in a couple hours and it pops up from 8-20 times when I hit cancel. Someone asked about this earlier and was told to repair their keychain but I checked my keychain and it is absolutely fine.

Calibrate laptop display to simulate TN display problems

I am a web developer and I have had issues where designs have too little contrast, and customers complain, but it looks fine on my nice MBP display. Most of the computers at Best Buy are sold with crappy panels, and I agree with the customer than on cheap displays, there is too little contrast.

Is there a way to simulate a typical Cheap TN panel in OSX?

Is there a way to type with Hebrew nikkud/ niqqud (diacritical vowels) on an iPad? There is a Davka app which allows you to type with nikkud within the app, but I'm looking for a way to type text with nikkud into a graphics app or into the web browser.

iPhone 5 Contacts Underline

I've recently had all the info in my Contacts underlined (not the name but phone numbers, addresses, etc.). I hate the look (makes it look busy and it's unnecessary), but have no idea how this occurred. I'm still using the older OS (not 8). Anybody know what I should do to get rid of the underlining? Keys are not repeating with 10.10.2

I never had a single issue with yosemite, until yestersday after updating to 10.10.2.

Now I press a key and hold it and it is not repeating anymore.

but the problem is selective. Spaces repeat. Symbols, punctuation mark repeats but numbers and letters don't.

Any way to make that work again?

Stream movie from iPod Touch to DLNA device

I'm trying to play a movie from my iPod Touch to a DLNA device. I'm using the iOS 8 app TV Assist but it can't find my "WD TV HD" device but they are both in the same WiFi network. Does the DLNA functionality require a "visible" SSID? (mine is currently "hidden")

Correcting text on iOS: fixing capitalization

I re-write and re-organize text frequently when I type longer messages (emails, StackExchange posts, etc). That means that words that were originally at the beginning of a sentence might end up in the middle, or vice versa.

I have found that it is nearly impossible on an iOS device to change the capitalization of a word without retyping the entire word. If I try to highlight just the first letter (or to drag the highlight end-point), then it snaps back to highlighting the entire word.

Is there some technique I am missing to do this?

Or maybe some custom keyboard that would make this simple? (I haven't used any custom keyboards yet.)

Some of this is in built-in apps (iMessage, Mail), others are in 3rd-party apps ("Alien Blue" client for Reddit, Facebook app).

In case it matters, I use an iPhone 6 and an iPad Air, both with latest iOS 8.1.3.

Apple ID - Security questions reset

When I'm logging in my Apple ID (http://ift.tt/1mBZW12) in the tab "Password and Security" there are security questions, just like this article says: http://ift.tt/1wXN0YB

The thing is - I know answers to my security questions, I keep them in text file, just like my other accounts data (e-mails, game accounts and so on), so I had no chance to forget them. But nevertheless my answers are not right according to what the page says when I click "Continue".

Ok, I thought, then I'll try to reset my security questions. I read the article that I mentioned before (HT201485), but the thing is - there is no any link to "Send reset security info email to [rescue email address]". And I do have 2 additional e-mail addresses.

I also checked the source code of the page. And guess what I've found:

"TODO add ability to reset CRs via rescue email"? That's above good and evil.

My iPad won't turn back on

I was scrolling through an app then it went to the home screen without me doing anything, then when I tried clicking on the app again my iPad froze while the app looked clicked, so I clicked the home button and waited a few minutes but nothing happened so I clicked the lock button. A few minutes of waiting later it turned off, but I thought it had just locked so I clicked the lock button again and the apple logo showed up. No matter how many tips I've tried or how many times I've clicked the lock button again it has remained off. (Also it isn't a battery problem, it was fully charged)

Swapfile creation?

I recently installed an SDD into my MacPro, and was paying attention to the storage used, both to be comfortable the SSD size was going to be enough, and also that the TM backup hard drive wouldn't fill too fast. This morning I noticed the private/var/vm folder had swapfiles totaling 64GB. My question would be how to reduce this and to understand why it happens.

I read What are the “sleepimage” and “swapfile” documents? and it warned not to delete these files. I searched some more, and found that a reboot wiped it all out. After the boot, there's one swapfile of 67MB, vs the 64 files each a full GB.

I never saw this before. I understand a reboot is the answer, but is there anything to do to prevent it occurring? I'd at least like to understand what process or app set this in motion.

How to lock app folder on iOS 8.1.2?

We are trying discontinue our user's use of iPod touch devices in production.

We want users only use certain apps. The rest of the apps should be hidden or locked.

I tried "Restrictions" from "General" in "Settings", it only hides few icons. I put all not-to-use icons into one folder and tried to lock it or hide it, but haven't found any way that works on iOS 8.1.2 or 8.1.3.

Is there any way to hide or lock applications or folders?

iphone calander + sign grayed out

In my iPhone calendar, the "+" sign is grayed out and will not allow me to add an event. I have tried going to calendars in iCloud (settings/icloud/turn on calendars)and calendars was on, so I turned it off, waited a few sec. and turned it back on, no success. I closed all programs and rebooted the phone and still not able to add an event into calendar, also went to settings/mail,contact,calendar and all is on there as well.

Calendar.app fails to correctly display starting time of appointment when synced with google calendar

The appointment has been created directly on the google calendar webapp. It starts at 9.00 and ends at 10.00.

Switch to Target Display Mode without keyboard

Here's my setup: MacBook --> Thunderbolt Display --> iMac 27"

The MacBook is the primary computer I want to use; the iMac is the (tertiary) display.

This all works just fine. The problem is, when I disconnect and then reconnect the MacBook, I have to manually put the iMac in Target Display Mode using the keyboard. This means I need to keep a keyboard attached to the iMac, and it clutters up my desk!

Is there any way to switch the iMac into TDM without using the keyboard? Maybe by logging in remotely?

I am planning on buying a Macbook Pro and Parallels Desktop 10, but I also love PC video games and I want to know if anyone knows how/if Steam games can run easily through Parallels Desktop. Also if Steam games can run, how well does it run? Do you think I would be better off getting Boot Camp?

Every now and then I get an annoying gong sound while I'm working. I could turn the sound off, but I would prefer to find out what is producing the sound.

iPhoto, faces and whole photos

When I click on "Find Faces" in iPhoto, I sometimes get a face that I don't recognize. I would have a better chance of recognizing the face if I could see the context---that is, the whole photo. Is there a quick way of going from the "Unnamed" face to the whole photo. At the moment, I can only think of a fairly convoluted and slow way, like naming the face "X", then searching for all photos with "X" appearing, then double-click to enlarge it.

I would also like there to be a quick way to get back to finding faces after looking at the whole photo.

Automount afp Volume with AppleScript

I know this is similar to other open questions about mounting network drives, but this one is slightly different.

I have an AppleScript that runs at startup that looks like this:

Where user_name is specific to the sub folder under file_server. On one of my Macs, this works and mounts the sub-folder at user-name. On a different mac, it only mounts the file_server folder. The one that doesn't mount the full path is OSX 10.9.5. The one that works properly is OSX 10.10.1. Makes me think it's an OSX version difference.

Third and fourth monitors disconnect on reboot

Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C109)

I have four monitors connected to my mac pro. One connected to the HDMI port, one connected with a passive (single link) DVI connector and two connected with dual-link DVI adaptors (the ones with the USB power and thunderbolt connectors). When I reboot, the dual link adaptors are disconnected until I unplug and replug their USB parts. The HDMI and passive DVI connected monitors are always active on reboot.

What a pain to get under the desk to reconnect the monitors.

Apple support techs send me to http://ift.tt/1z6Rxsu which doesn't address this problem.

What can I do to get the third and fourth monitors to work immediately on reboot?

Screen saver settings keep defaulting back to National Geographic Photos

I like to use my photo library for a screen saver (have 10,000 photos - it's nice to get to see them more often), but ever since I've downloaded Yosemite, every time the computer goes to sleep, it defaults back to the National Geographic photos (there are maybe 30 of them). Really, really frustrating, and I can't find where to change the default settings to try and make an adjustment. Anyone know how to change that default setting or have any other idea what to do?

macbook ctrl key acts as alt (control/option)

Suddenly when I press my Ctrl key acts as if it were the Alt/Option key. I have not changed any settings though.

I am mapping the Alt key to the Caps Lock key (see image). But besides that everything is standard.

If I map the Ctrl key to the Caps Lock the Caps Lock will act as Ctrl (as expected).

Goolged the problem and could not find anything about it.

How to read ePubs on a first generation iPad

My father has a 1st generation iPad. I can't seem to find a single eBook reader that is compatible. iBooks should have a compatible version, but it won't install it.

I have read about using iTunes to sync older versions, but his Mac mini is so old it won't even 'see' the iPad on iTunes.

Any ideas?

can't see other mac workstation in Ethernet, ok in wifi

So, I upgraded router to latest dd-wrt firmware.

Now, for some reason, can't see my macdesktop from my macbook if connected to Ethernet. Macbook has DHCP, mac desktop has DHCP with manual IP.

I can see the desktop if I connect via Wifi, but not through Ethernet.

I've Released / Renewed DHCP a few times, rebooted, flushed dscache, power cycled router.

Use iPad as iPhone dialler

I often have the following problem: I'll be listening to music on my iPhone, browsing things on my iPad, when I want to make a phone call. This can be either a number in my contacts or on a web page or something. I can already use the iPad to make the call (using the iPhone for the communication), but what I want is to still use the iPhone's earphones/mic, and only have the iPad do the dialing for me. Is this possible?

Stop Mail Changing Port for E-Mail Account

I'm having an annoying problem with Mail on Yosemite, which I didn't notice on earlier versions. Basically if I suffer a connection issue with my ISP's mail service (which does sometimes become slow to respond during peak hours) then Mail seems to try alternative ports.

This would be fine, except that it eventually settles on port 143 with SSL disabled, at which point it refuses to connect (because it can't send my password securely), but it has now changed the account's port permanently to 143, meaning I have to change it back before I can use my e-mail account again.

Is there a way to prevent Mail from doing this? I've set the correct port for the account, and know it's correct, so I don't want Mail to ever change it, but it keeps doing this any time the connection takes a bit too long to respond.

How to automatically manage backup files (with retention)

I would like to automate my backup-management workflow for certain applications, but I couldn't find out how to do this on Mac OSX 10.10:

Lets say an application creates its backup files into a directory with several subdirectories by date. Those subdirs then contain the important backup files:

backup_dir 15_01_13 backup_data.dat backup_data2.dat

    15_01_14 
           backup_data.dat 
           backup_data2.dat 

    15_01_15 
           backup_data.dat 
           backup_data2.dat 
 

Lightroom for example does this.

How can I automatically manage these backups if I want to delete every directory/file older than 1 week, but only if I have 2 complete backups left? I recently purchased Hazel, but it seems that the subdirectories are a problem regarding the additional check clause "if at least 2 backups are left".

Can this be done by a combination of AppleScript and Hazel or the like?

How to restart a process without user interaction

I killed a process (a simple .jar running in the background as a global agent) by pkill -9 java. Since the global agent in launchd is configured as keepAlive the process gets restarted immediately.

Unfortunately this nasty popup ("The action Run Shell Script encountered an error") comes up and prevents the restart of the process without user interaction.

Is it possible that launchd simply restarts the process without waiting that the user presses OK in this popup? After pressing OK the process gets restarted properly.

iPad is not turning on due to cancelling upgrading

I upgraded my ipad 2 from ios 6 to ios 8. But, I cancelled upgrading it by turning it off because I thought that my files aren't backed up to a pc. I used ipad alone to upgrade it. When I turned on my ipad there's an image of usb connector and iTunes icon signifying to connect it to itunes. I have a question, would all my files such as photos, paid apps, and memorable videos still restored in my ipad?

xCode 5.1.1 togeather with xCode 6.1.1 - simulators deleted

I had xCode 6.1.1 installed togeather with the iOs8 simulators but I need to be able to test websites with iOs7 also so I installed xCode 5.1.1 also and named it to this. (I also renamed xCode 6.1.1 to that instead of just xCode)

After that I got all iOs7 simulators in xCode 5.1.1 working. But now all simulators from xCode 6.1.1 are gone! When I try to add them back it just loads for a while and then nothing happens. What should I do?

I need iOs7 and iOs8 simulators to test with, preferably on the same computer and without any virtual machine (don't have disk space).

OSX 10.10 Python crashing from bash

When I run Python through bash it keeps seg faulting on me. The crash happens for example if I just type >>> "\n \n, but also for a lot of other cases. From my limited understanding of the stack trace, the problem is originating from readline.so. I've googled it but can't find anything mentioning this for Yosemite. Internal keyboard + touchpad stopped working, on Macbook air 'early 2014', Yosemite 10.10.2

my internal keyboard and touchpad - stopped working a few days ago. When it first happened - I made the macbook sleep-wake-up several times - and it came back to normal. External keyboard+touchpad - work normally - but internal keyboard keeps randomly 'typing' in characters for me, especially 'fn-f' keys (such as randomly muting/adjusting volume, etc). If I reboot into 'Rescue mode' - they work flawlessly, but in 'safe boot' - they keep misbehaving. I've tried already NVRAM+SMC reset chords on startup. The rate of the problem is becoming worse, that it, it's less and less likely the internal input devices will work (immediately after sleep). I've checked preferences and touchpad is enabled, no-keyboard-keys etc. Any advice? OS-reinstall? anything to post here? thank you!

Boot Camp OS startup selection not available with Windows Alt

I am using iMac (Yosemite) and Logitech K800 wireless keyboard http://ift.tt/1h61LqC (specifically the Finnish version of it). When I press Alt on bootup, regardless of when I start pressing it, the operating system selection menu does not appear. I have tried 30 times, with different keys etc. No use.

Is it really impossible to go to the selection menu with a Windows keyboard?

I do have an Apple wired keyboard connected too. No problem with the Option key and selection menu appearing with that. I just don't want to keep the Apple keyboard solely for this purpose. If there is no other choice, will http://ift.tt/R7vcqB help me (are there any cons with that rEFInd, I've never tried that)?

Lost of hd recovery in my mac

I lost the hd recovery in my mac. I already erased and the hardrve using the disk utility but then if i try to install the os x using os x utility it sees that could not find installation information for this machine .. Plz help

Non-iMessage SMS texts hidden and inaccessible in conversation, but accounted for in unread messages badge

I recently traveled abroad with my iPhone 6, and sent and received text messages to another iPhone user while on International Roaming. Since I did not have internet access, the texts were transmitted on SMS (green) and not iMessaging (blue). On my return to the States, all of the SMS text messages disappeared from the conversation. The Messages app, however, now has an unread messages badge with the number corresponding to the missing SMS text messages.

The only way I can access those messages is if I ask Siri to "read my unread messages" at which point Siri does in fact read the hidden messages, but those messages are still hidden from the conversation, and the messages are still considered unread (the unread counter does not reset to zero).

How can I make the non-iMessage SMS texts become visible in the conversation?

How to stop "Join [network name]" pop ups for proxy wifi

Using OS 10.10.1

I'm connecting to a wifi network that has most of the internet blocked. The problem is, every 10 minutes or so a pop-up window will appear saying "Join [network name]", but the content of the pop-up is blocked by the network.

I assume it's some kind of login window, but the internet works without any login.

At the bottom of the pop-up is a site address of what it's trying to access. The websites seem to cycle between these:

And the actual address url looks something like:

http://ift.tt/1HJebBR

Is there a way to stop the pop-ups? or disable whatever is trying to access those sites?

Shell script to restart a certain process if it is not responding

I need an java application to run 24/7 on my mac. Unfortunately the JVM process sometimes gets stuck and thus the java application does not respond anymore.

Is there a possebility to detect if a given process has crashed (or at least is not in a proper running state) and restart this specific process subsequent?

I found

ps aux|grep java

which lists the java process (/usr/bin/java)

Now I need to know how to watch the process state codes and how to restart this particular process in e.g. a shell script.

BTW, the process state is T which means stopped as far as I know.

EDIT: Unfortunately four suggestions didn't work on my machine. I configured an global agent and the jar is starting properly but the process still fails after a certain period of time. Strangely enough the process in activity monitor is not marked as not responding, whereas the context menu of the dock item does (see figure)

How to get music from USB to iTunes on Macbook Air

I saw a similar question to this that was answered clearly, though mine is a bit different. So I put my USB in, have iTunes open and I went up to file and did add new playlist and chose the file from my USB that had my music. So I did all this and even though you say it make take awhile my iTunes or Mac aren't showing any signs of the music coming onto my iTunes.

How do I know if the music is coming onto my iTunes and how long should this take?

USB 3.0 to gigabit ethernet keeps crashing system with 10.10.1/2

I have this Realtek USB 3.0 to gigabit ethernet adaptor. Using either the included drivers for OS 10.8.x or the official Realtek drivers from December 2014, it hard crashes the system every 5-10 minutes. I have about 120 GiB of data to transfer to a 13" Pro Retina and no external HDD - is there a way to make the Realtek adaptor work under 10.10.x or a quicker way to transfer my data?
