Primary click works until you *touch* the trackpad

...then you can't left-click at all - mouse or trackpad, button or tap.

This just started happening with my MacBook Pro (3,1) running Mavericks with all its updates (10.9.5). Had the computer for years now with no problems.

If I use my Magic Mouse, it works perfectly until I even touch the trackpad. The pointer will still move (with both trackpad and mouse) but you can only right click (luckily Apple allows you to right-click on the Apple menu to restart the computer, then it all works again.) This also happens in the recovery environment and "guest" Safari-only user, so I'm under the assumption that reinstalling OS X won't help.

I've tried resetting the NVRAM to no avail. Taking the advice of another poster (Can't click with trackpad or mouse (OS X 10.9, MacBook Pro)) I've enabled Mouse Keys to start by hitting Option 5 times just in case the mouse's battery dies, but there's gotta be a simpler fix to this. The Magic Mouse was in the other room with no batteries in it when the problem first arose, and my battery is not bulging (tried taking the battery out and the trackpad still won't click.)

I'd prefer not to go to the local Apple Store because the people there were rude and just wanted to sell me a new Mac (not in my budget right now). No trackpad makes the laptop less portable, if I have to carry a mouse everywhere that's one thing but it shouldn't quit working just by touching the trackpad.

Mail.app thinks I'm a new user

My laptop locked up (black screen, spinning beachball), and after leaving it to see if it would handle whatever it was doing on its own overnight, I went and held the power button down to force it to shut down.

When I brought it back up, everything seemed okay until I went into Mail.app ... which is asking me about my account information, as if I had never used it.

I unfortunately don't have a recent backup. I see that I still have a ~/Mail directory, which looks to have lots of my local folders defined.

Should I go through with the 'new user' setup, to see if it finds my existing local mailboxes, or is there some other recommended procedure for this process?

I'm running OS 10.6.8, and Mail.app 4.6. (And before I get lots of comments, yes, I know they are old, and yes, I know that the newer OSes are free upgrades)

SSD Performing Poorly

I have a MBP 17 2010, equipped with a Vertex 2 SSD 120GB as boot disk.

It's an old hardware but I don't want to change it, the problem is the SSD is performing poorly :

but the speed, especially write speed, is quite the half of the Vertex 2 public benchmarks.

What does an "All" nested group do in a "Match All" Smart Playlist?

When creating a Smart Playlist, what does placing a "All of the following are true" nested group when the playlist is set to "Match all of the following rules"?

I've tried reading through it logically a few times, and I always end up with it not actually contributing to the flow of the smart playlist. If all the items in the nested group have to be true, and all the items directly under parent must be true, it seems that this configuration would only serve as a way to group similar items to a user's preference.

Is there a logical precedence that I am missing where having a "match all" nested group on the first level of a "match all" smart playlist makes sense?

How to convert multiple .caf audio files to .wav?

I have downloaded an iPad app called LaunchPad in which you put sounds into buttons aligned in squares so they can be easily played. The problem is that this LaunchPad app only accepts .wav audio files and all my audio effects are in the .caf format and they are like a hundred sounds. Is there a program to convert multiple files (a whole folder of files) into another format?

Can't VNC from phone to tethered computer

Scenario:

Computer tethered to iPhone via Wifi, VNC server running on computer. VNC viewer (in this case iTeleport) running on phone. This is a carputer that uses my phone for internet connectivity and runs plex media server to send audio / video to connected clients. The clients connect to the computer via a mini wifi router (no internet connectivity), and the computer is set up to automatically connect to the tether connection SSID of my phone.

I would like to be able to control the computer via the iPhone via VNC. I can connect the computer to the phone via wifi, but the VNC viewer on the phone can't see the VNC server on the computer.

Assume that tethering is employing some form of AP Isolation (or similar). Wondering if there's a way around that. I can connect the phone to the mini wifi router, but then the computer loses internet connectivity.

The tethered computer (for completeness, not that it should matter) is running Win 7.

I can't download Facebook messanger

Am wondering if someone can help me please. My boyfriend had borrowed me his work iPad and I would sometimes message him off there now today it's asking for his user and password so I have put them in but it's saying check network. His work iPad is also joined to his personal iPad could he of changed his settings so I can't no see what texts he receives or is this normal ??????

Downloading software

I was trying to download OS X Yosemite. It is very big - more than 5GB. The download did not succeed due to some problem in internet connection. Only 2.5 GB is downloaded and I wanted to continue from where it stopped. I closed the Mac App Store and reopened. I lost what was downloaded till that time. I want to know where it is stored in my Mac so that I could start from there. It saves me lot of time and internet download usage, since it is a limited internet plan. Thank you!

Passcode Problem

i forgot my iphone 5 passcode when i was trying to put the different codes then a window appear on the device screen that iphone is disabled..after all i have i cloud id and password..after sign in to my i cloud id i have erased the device in order to remove the passcode from my iphone but it still says that device will be erased when device will connect to internet..so what would i have to do??please help

How to quickly know the resolution of an image?

I am looking for a nice and quick way to display the resolution of an image from OS X 10.9. Presently, I have to open the image in photoshop and then enter a menu to know the resolution. The process is too slow when I have to browse through dozens of pictures and get those with resolution big enough.

My Active Directory account keeps locking me out

I have a Mac Pro on Yosemite and I only use Active Directory when accessing server folders and my email. My account locks me out regularly and I can't seem to figure out why. I have disabled all devices except my computer and hoping someone here can help me determine what is going on. My help desk here can't seem to help.

In Terminal, how do I add a host key to the file known_hosts? Also, how do I remove a given host key from the same file?

The operating system (os x 10.9.5) and all my files are in the mainHD, where I'm running out of space. I would like to delete the oldHD so that I can increase the size of mainHD.

When I try to delete oldHD via the graphical disk utility I get an Alert (null) box where I can select cancel or remove, if I click on remove nothing happens and in the log I see:

External Monitor in Portrait Mode with MacBook Pro

I've been searching around and found the "alt/option + command keys" trick, but doing this doesn't provide the rotation drop down on my Dell monitor (P2714H) (only offers to rotate on my MBP screen). Wondering if there's a workaround, or why this would be? Related to my OS X (10.8.5) or internal hardware (MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012))? I would really appreciate any help!!

How exclude a specific folder from spotlight search but not from search window?

I'm trying to set up my Mac so that it will exclude files in a folder called 'XYZ' from the search results in spotlight only. The reason is because these files are mostly private, and I don't want them to pop up in a spotlight search.

However, I still want to be able to search them in a finder window, where I have a little more control than in spotlight. (To be clear, search normally with alt+command+space, exclude folder from command+space). Any idea how something like this could be done?

Does iTunes U support the iTunes Timed Text Profile?

I'm looking for a way to manage captions and subtitles on iTunes U without having to embed them in the video file (and upload all the data all over again).

In the "iTunes Video and Audio Asset Guide 5.2" there is a description of "iTunes Timed Text" (.itt file) in the section on submitting film files (presumably for the Apple Store). Does iTunes U have similar support for this .itt file format?

Skip first terminal beep and to display ambiguous filename expansions

Pressing TAB in the terminal (and in fact some surprise places in OS X's GUI!) either completes the only filename with the prefix provided to the immediate left of TAB, and when there are several such names (or no such names!) the terminal simply beeps. In the latter case, pressing TAB again either beeps again (because there are no such names at all), or displays a list of the choices.

It seems as though this behaviour introduces ambiguity whereas it seems like the entire point is to prevent ambiguity. I would like to remove the beep that happens when many files with the same prefix exist. It just seems like extra effort and it makes me feel like I did something wrong until I realize that I haven't.

How do I change the behaviour of terminal's TAB completion, specifically to only beep if no such file exist and show possibilities otherwise?

List of preinstalled Python packages in Yosemite?

I have installed many python packages via sudo pip install and some of them have messed up the system by overwriting or updating preloaded python packages. Now I want to revert all the damage done and install my own packages only in a virtualenv. Is there any way I can obtain a list of python packages, preferably with their version, that comes with a clean Yosemite?

How do I turn on calculator in spotlight without enabling conversions?

In Yosemite spotlight sends all requests to multiple third parties depending on your settings. I've disabled all of these options, leaving "Calculator, System Preferences and Applications" out of principle. Disabling conversions however, seems to have disabled the calculator too.

My question is how can I enable the calculator without enabling conversions?

text message delete trash can disappears I can't delete specific text messages [on hold]

Normally,when I want to delete parts of a text messages, I press on the message and "copy/more" is displayed, I press on "more" and tick the relevant text messages to delete, the trash bin appears in bottom left corner and you can delete. However it only works the first time the phone is switched on, if you want to do this a 2nd time when you press "more" and tick the relevant text messages to delete, the trash bin in the bottom left is gone and the camera is still displayed. You can still delete the entire conversation (which I don't want to do), or to switch phone off and back on again - then it works just once and vanishes again. Anyone else encountered the same problem?

If I try to call 9-1-1 using Siri, she says "Calling 9-1-1. I'm sorry, I can't call 9-1-1."

Is there really no way to call 9-1-1 from a hands-free position? This is such a strange issue; I can't imagine a single advantage to intentionally disabling this functionality.

Integrating subscribed iCal in personal calendar

Is it possible to integrate subscribed calendars into personal calendars?

I currently have the following set-up: - iCloud: Personal - iCloud: Work - iCloud: Internship - iCal: College

Now, its really easy to just share the first three iCloud calendars by simply sharing them with my family's iCloud addresses (they all have iPhones). For the fourth one, which is a subscribed iCal address (which also keeps me up to date with schedule changes) I do not want them to have to subscribe to that. I'd rather create a fourth iCloud calendar and have that in sync with the subscribed iCal. I am aware of the option to import all activities from that iCal into a possibly newly created calendar, but I'm assuming that won't stay in sync as it's a one-time import.

Any help is much appreciated.

On 25 of Jan-2015 I updated Thunderbird email. Before that it was working fine without any issue. After the update, my Thunderbird got very slow. I will get new messages like in packet 3 message after that 4 message after that 3 message. It will take too much time to download all message.

Delete key doesn't work in vim on iTerm2

Firstly, I typed some thing on insert mode, like

Hello

At this stage, if I didn't exit from insert mode, delete works and can delete the whole word if I want.

If I quit insert mode, and open insert mode again, this Hello can't be removed by delete. But the newly typed in content can be removed.

I've renamed my .vimrc, problem still exits.

And I did some test on remote server through iterm, didn't encounter the same issue.

What could be the cause of this problem? How to fix it?

Finder bug - wrong drop zone highlight

Sometimes I experience strange behaviour within the Finder. When I drag files to another Finder window the highlighted drop zones are incorrect and if I attempt to edit a file name the location of the edit-textfield is wrong as well.

The highlight zone seems to be connected to the Finder windows previous location. I noticed other users had this problem (http://ift.tt/1FWKSHw) but no answer was ever supplied.

Has anybody experienced similar issues and found a (preferably permanent) solution to this problem?

"Couldn’t create temporary file." error when disk erasing free space

I was trying to wipe the free space of an external USB 3.0 disk in OS X (Yosemite) disk utility. However, I receive the following error:

The disk is formatted as GUID / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and 1.1 of 2.0 TB are occupied.

1. Do you know what the cause / solution could be? Disk Repair returns no errors.


2. Do you know of a terminal command to wipe free space?

Does `dtruss -p PID` list system calls made before the command was run?

I'm trying to diagnose an intermittently slow command. When I run the command and see it hanging, I press control + t to get the PID, then in another tab, run diagnose [PID] - eg, diagnose 123. I've defined diagnose as a function in my zsh configuration:

Obviously, since I'm reacting when I notice a hang, I run diagnose several seconds after the process started. The output lists many system calls, but I wonder whether I'm missing anything important.

Does the output of dtruss -p [PID] include system calls made by that process before dtruss was run?

Unlink iCloud of restored iPad

I have restored ipad of my former colleague hoping I get "new ipad". I was supposed to make ready for his replacement but everything I got is new ios 8 and blocked ipad which wants iCloud information during set up. Can I unlinked it after my stupid move with restore without getting the icloud information from previous user?

OS X based RFID Printing Solution

We are in the process of upgrading our servers at our school. Right now we use Safecom to manage our print queues for each user. Each user that is allowed to print can do so via logging in using an RFID printer tag.

What I would like to know is whether there is a similar solution that runs on OS X?

It should be able to:

• Allow users to push their jobs to the printer, collecting them later using the RFID tag to log in.


• Allow administrators to check how many jobs have been sent, cancel jobs, add users and so on


• Allow us to import users from a directory service of some kind

Tilde (~) File in Macintosh Directory

Last night I discovered what looks like an unusual file named "~" (tilde) in the root of my "Macintosh HD" directory on my MacBook.

Finder reports the file is 2.2MB in size, of kind "TextEdit.app Document", and was created on 22nd January 2014 (so about a month ago). I haven't noticed any operational issues with OS X or it's applications.

I haven't yet touched the file but would obviously like to remove it. I am very conscious that '~' is a special alias to the user home directory and thus I would appreciate any recommendations in removing the file in a safe manner that isn't likely to nuke my home directory or screw up the operation of applications or OS X. I don't know whether to delete or rename and whether to use Finder or the command line.

It's entirely possible that I created the file by accident since I've recently been drafting and running various shell scripts that use the ~, user home alias.
