FileVault Stuck on Pause

I just got a new 13" rMBP with Yosemite installed. I chose to enable FileVault when I set the machine up.

Now, several days later, an app called "Reverting from FileVault" shows on the list of apps consuming a lot of energy.

I check FileVault in System Preferences, and it says "Encryption paused," followed by "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Connecting the power adapter makes no difference, even though the machine recognizes that it's charging.

I've found several threads describing this problem, but no solutions.

I've tried clearing the PRAM, going into Recovery Mode, repairing the disk and repairing permissions. Nothing has worked. I can't stop FileVault from Terminal (the output is simply "..."), and when I try to enable it, it says it's already on.

Any suggestions? The machine is brand new, so there isn't a HUGE amount of data on it (nor are there any Time Machine backups), but I'd like to avoid having to wipe the drive.

If there's nothing I can do, does Apple have a history of issuing hotfixes for these sort of issues?

Desktop icons have disappeared after using HDMI cable (Yosemite)

I had a strange issue recently where I had to reset PRAM after using an HDMI cable with my MBP (it had a blank screen on boot).

I feel like this is again related to the HDMI cable. After using it, all my Desktop icons have disappeared. I've run killAll Finder and rebooted and it hasn't restored them. Trying to avoid resetting PRAM again.

How can I develop in a protected container environment?

When doing development work on my MacBook, I find myself installing so much stuff that things can get out of hand very quickly. I have a ton of dot-files in my home directory, and several package managers. I fear that there will be an issue some day that might blossom into a system reinstallation.

I know that I can use VirtualBox with some flavor of Linux to do development in a protected environment. I also get the benefits of being able to store snapshots, reconfigure the hardware, etc. However, I'd like to develop specifically on OSX.

The only solution I can think of is purchasing another copy of OSX and using that in a virtual machine. I don't mind whether it's a jail, Docker container, VM, etc. Do I have any options that don't involve purchasing OSX?

Intel HD 3000, HDMI and 2560x1080

I recently purchased an ultra wide monitor, with a native resolution of 2560x1080.

This is great but it's only working with Windows ! Apple is limiting HDMI resolution to be no more than 1920x1080, for no reason at all. I read everywhere than I need to buy whatever cable or adapter and to use display port, but I just can't. I also tried SwitchResX but same problem, resolutions over 1920x1080 are not available.

So I searched for a solution, and I found something interesting there : http://ift.tt/1wx2AAF It seems that increasing the framebuffer size will set bigger resolution available.

But I can't find any info about this with an Intel HD 3000. Is someone have any clue about where to begin ? I guess it's happenning in AppleIntelSNBGraphics but that file is quite big...

Another question I'm having is, is this still the case on Yosemite ? Because I'm on Mavericks and I could do the update if that might solve this issue.

Launchd to terminate what it starts

I have a launchd plist that uses StartCalendarInterval to start my python script at the desired time and day of the week.

Now I want to create a launchd plist that both starts and terminates a different python script at selected times. Where is the "KillCalender" command or equivalent?

Essentially, I want the program the controls my Christmas lights come on at 1800 and go off at 2200.

I suppose I could write the main loop in my python program so it terminates at 2200 but I was hoping launchd could do this for me.

Can't unmount Macintosh hd with Mavericks with lion bootable USB

Hi I'm trying to revert back to lion after using the sixty four on thirty two method to install Mavericks on a mac pro 1,1 but for some reason when I boot from a USb with the lion installer I can't erase the Macintosh hd it says it can't unmount so I was wondering if there was something I had to do specifically. Also I can't run command+r to start on recovery. Hoping you can point me in the right direction.

Getting a 403 Forbidden error when I try to log in on the Wordpress iOS app

I'm using Automattic's iOS app for Wordpress and I'm trying to log-in for the first time to my site. I clicked the "add self-hosted site" option and put in the username, password and my self-hosted wordpress blog, and when I try to sign in I get a 403 error spit back at me.

Yosemite upgrade and corrupt external partitioned hard drive?

I upgraded to Yosemite and shortly afterward mybook hard drive 1.5tb fat formatted failed to work. All I was doing was playing itunes songs stored on the partitioned hard drive. I then tried to verify the drive it failed with error class 08. I then tried to repair it and it says it's not repairable.

I just took it and put in on my wifes Windows Surface machine and it mounted and allowed me to view files on both partitions from windows RT on her Surface...

What the heck is going on? Why won't it mount on my IMAC? I also have an NDAS Hard drive that has gone belly up but it won't mount on either the IMAC or windows surface machine...

What is going on here? I also have a 3TB external drive on this IMAC and I don't want it getting bit by this bug either nor do I want that to happen with the internal boot hard drive on the IMAC.

Anyone know whats going on here with yosemite and hard drives and how to resolve it?

sudden data drain for Ipone 5s

I have an iphone 5 s. New from the factory March 2015. No facebook, utube or other downloaded apps on the phone. Use WIFI most of the time. Suddenly data usage went from a monthly amount of 2.25gb etc, to 7.85 gb last month. There were no changes in use. The phone sits on my desk all day rarely used. My phone said that I have used 2.83 GB of cellular data over the life of the phone.

I shut down almost all of the cellular data options and over the past 24 hours my phone said I used 5 mb. My cell phone company said it was 500mb.

Ive resorted to a reset / wipe but not confident that this will fix it.

Anyone else had this problem? And if so, what did you do.

Home folder not being created for network users

I'm in the process of reimaging 20 or so MacBooks (both classic white MacBooks and brand new MacBook Pros) for two classes at the school that I work at, and I'm encountering a major issue:

When logging on as a network user, the menu bar at the top of the screen refuses to show, and Finder continuously opens and crashes, repeating this loop over and over again.

I've noticed that, occasionally, a dialog box pops up for a short space of time, saying something about the home or Users folder being inaccessible. I've attached a screenshot (sorry about it being a photo. I was unable to take a screenshot, as the unavailable home folder meant I had nowhere to save the screenshot file. Instead, I had to take a photo on my phone as soon as the error message appeared).

This also stops users from saving documents locally, as there are no Documents, Desktop, etc. directories present for users to save their files to.

After logging out of a network account, I've logged on under the local admin account, and run ls /Users. There is no directory for the user who had just logged in and out, only the admin, and the accounts left over from the imaging process.

I've noticed that running the command chflags nohidden /Users works a lot of the time. However, I don't think it's a permanent fix; one laptop which I previously thought was fixed through this method came back to me today with the same problem happening again. Running the command again doesn't fix it, either.

I'm guessing that the issue is either related to the account server (Active Directory, possibly users' home directories not being mounted or accessible from the server) or the image itself.

This happens on every re-imaged Mac without fail, and the error only occurs only for network users; the local administrator account can log in successfully and not encounter this error.

I'd be happy to provide more screenshots or run through some more troubleshooting if need be.

Tips to speed up a Mac Mini?

I recently purchased a used MacMini3,1 (Late 2009) with a 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 2 GB of memory. The seller shipped it to me with Snow Leopard installed, and it ran smooth and fast. I just upgraded it to Lion and it's very sluggish. Would adding more memory fix this, or possibly upgrading to Mountain Lion make the computer run better? I installed Yosemite and it was unusably slow. I realize the computer is old, but does anyone have a solution?

Full wifi signal but horrible download speeds

I'm connecting my MacBook to the internet via a current generation Apple Airport Extreme (late 2013). When I'm standing next to the Airport, my Mac's wifi indicator shows full signal strength (duh!) and I get excellent download speeds (30-50mbps). When I'm on the other side of the house, my MacBook still shows full signal strength but I can barely load anything (.25mbps... if I'm lucky)!

What gives? Why would the signal be strong but I can't download anything?

The system appeared to freeze. iStat Menu's clock stopped, the cursor wouldn't move, etc. I tried (physically) closing and reopening, but it didn't go to sleep and the apple logo light on the back stayed on. Option-command-power and option-control-power also didn't do anything. After force shutdown (long press of power button) and startup, it asked if I wanted to reopen Finder windows after force quitting it, "you shut down your computer because of a problem", and:

There's not much I was doing, there's not that much I have installed (relatively new computer). I'm guessing it was Focusrite's Saffire Mix Control. Or maybe Safari.

What could the cause of this be?

Os x finder - sorting by date - today/no date issues

Is there any logic behind OS X's file sorting patterns?

Why on the left it is labeled as "no date" and on the right it is "today"?

What is the purpose of "no date" anyway? Isn't it kind of useless, especially appearing on the very bottom of the list?

Is there any fix for this?

Accessing network created by Internet Sharing

I would like to be able to access services on devices that are connected to my shared network.

Basically I have set up network sharing such that when I connect via Thunderbolt-Ethernet I share the connection over wifi. In order to do this my mac (I guess) creates some virtual network for devices to be be issued an IP address on. So what I would like to be able to do is to bridge (??) this network so that I can access the devices on it.

More specifically I would like to be able to access a service on a specific port that a device on the share's network is hosting.

Is this possible? And if so how?

OS X Yosemite installation error: File system verify or repair failed

My Mac has been running fine until I decided to upgrade to OS X 10.10, Yosemite. When it is installing I get the message:

File system verify or repair failed.

I clicked the restart option to boot into my internal HD but tells me its unavailable. I then rebooted, held Command+R to enter disk utility in order to repair the disk, but it tells me it failed and should backup and restore the HD.

I then tried to create an image on my external drive but this also fails with the message:

Unable to create Macintosh HD.dmg. (Input/output error)

I am stuck in this vicious cycle of restarting and the installation failing. I cannot escape the installation process.

Is there a way to access my files and copy them onto my external HD, then erase and restore the internal HD?

How can I debug a crashing application on OS X?

I have a game installed from Steam on my Mac (Crusader Kings II). The most recent patch from the developer has been having crashes and freezes on my Mac, and I'd like to help give the developer as much debugging information as possible (I'm an iOS developer myself).

One of the problems with the game involved the game completely freezing up. To assist in debugging, I used the Time Profiler from Xcode Instruments and attached it to the game. When it froze, I could see what exactly was using up processor time, and I've reported this to the developer.

However, the other problem with the game is a hard crash to the desktop. Normally, when applications (like Xcode) completely crash, OS X will give me an error report that will include useful information, like the stack trace. However, when this game crashes, I get nothing. It just completely disappears. The process is no longer in the Force Quit list, but I also get no crash report.

Is there any way, using Xcode Instruments, or any other means, to determine exactly what state the application is in in the instant just before it crashes?

My computer is a Mac Mini (late 2012 model) and I'm on OS X 10.10.1 if that matters.

I have purchased a new iPhone and want to give my old one to my son. The email address I had on my old phone is no longer valid and therefore I cannot reset my setting so that my son can use it as I don't remember the password I used, unfortunately I used a work email address which I have learnt is not a good idea.

How can I software update over cellular data? I've got enough data on my SIM but when go to update my iPad to iOS 8, it requires Wi-Fi. I do not have a router.

viewing vga to usb input on a mac book pro

I want to use my mac book as a monitor and key board and mouse for my windows pc. basically i want to use my lap top as a remote control for a headless windows 7 pc without lag. I want to play some steam game that is very graphic card Intensive. I do not want to use a slow wifi connection to do this. one option would be to just display the GUI of the pc on my laptop via a vga to usb adapter. Another option would be to use a ethernet connection from my pc to my mac laptop using vnc however i do not know about the speeds. If you have any ideas on how i can do this let me know

Removed icon folder from Launchpad keeps coming back

After installning Yosemite the launchpad all icons on the Launchpad were shuffled around and when I organized them and reboot the system they were back in disorder. So I found a solution online to remove the .db in the library and that solved the problem.

The issue now is that every time I reboot the system two empty icon folders (that I keep removing) keeps coming back.

Is there any way I can get rid of them permanently and keep Launchpad remembering all my settings?

Cannot change GIMP language

Today, I opened GIMP on my Mac. It is launched in Arabic language.

I have never changed it to Arabic language. My System's language is English US.

I found on Google that I can change the language by going to Prefs -> Interface

So, I went to Prefs -> Interface but there is no language selector available there. May be it got hidden?

why cannot I edit my `hosts` file?

I'm trying to edit my hosts file, because doing ssh <some host in hosts> fails to translate to ip.

according to the Finder UI it is found under:

however when trying to run cat hosts from the terminal I get an error:

I tried to create a new hosts file but then I see another one is created next to the first one

but when I try to edit the second hosts I need to duplicate to anther destination. I copy it to /etc and again the first problem occurs.

I have tried to change the permissions to everyone can read and write. But yet it didn't help.

Laptop drops wifi when moving from one WAP to another one, with same SSID

I have two WAPs in my house with the same SSID, different channels, far apart from each other to offer coverage.

When I physically move my laptop, while on, from one to the other it loses the wifi connection. I have to turn wifi off then back on to get it to work again.

I have other devices, iphone and Android, which manage to work seamlessly across the house. The only problem is with the Mac laptop. Also, it used to work. This might be just a problem since upgrading to Yosemite, but I'm not sure.

Connecting MacbookPro retina mid 2012 to 4k display

I tried to connect MacbookPro Retina 2012 mid 2.7GHZ 15 inches to 4k display using HDMI. It was working fine for few hours in 3840x2160 at 30 hz unfortunately when i changed the setting in display option to 1080p. I lost the above resolution option anymore. But when I login to my windows partition. It loads to the 4K resolution. I would love to have some suggestion, how to get back the 3840x2160 scaled out option in my Yosemite.

2) I would like to know if anyone have tried connecting 2012 mid MacbookPro with HDMI or any other connector with 60 hz. 30 hz is painfully lagging. Any suggestion would really helpful!

I want to expand my Windows partition. I saw all the tutorials on youtube and they said to drag the drive on the corner. However, the Disk partitions doesn't have a drive for me to drag and said that it was a startup partition so I can't decrease it's size.

Shell script to boot OSX in recovery mode and execute another shellscript

I'm working at a University and we are restoring our Macs using Apples ars which works great. The process is to manually go to the computer - reboot it in recovery mode and then run the ars command to sync the image from the server.

Is it possible to do this via shell script? I imagine the steps to be roughly:

1. Set a OSX flag that reboots into the recovery mode.


2. Execute a shell script that runs the asr (Maybe via LaunchDaemon?)


3. Reset the flag to boot from the normal boot volume


4. Reboot

Unfortunately I did not find information how to manually reboot into recovery mode or launch an automatic script from the recovery partition.

Do you have any idea how this could work?

Facetime is restricted but not on restrictions list

I don't know what happened but suddenly my facetime app is missing. I can't find it neither on any of my settings nor on my home screen. However, I can see it on my notifications setting. I tried to FaceTime someone once using Siri but she said FaceTime is restricted on my iPhone. Help! 😔😔

Replacement parts for Macbook Air (13-inch, Early 2008) - broken hinge problem?

I have a "MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2008)" with a broken hinge problem.

I'm presently outside the US and wont be able to go into a Genius Bar anytime soon. Besides, the laptop is far outside the warranty period so it is unlikely that any servicing could be done by Apple.

I'm planning to fix it on my own, but need to understand which replacement parts I need to order. Does anyone have any insights into what I should order?

Time Machine backup of home directory is missing

2 days (on Sunday) ago I performed clean OS X Yosemite installation over OS X Yosemite that was upgraded from Mavericks previously. I have a time machine backup. So, latest backups in time machine was written by Yosemite.

In new system I have an account with the same username.

Now I tried to restore some folders from time machine but I was not able to find my home directory in time machine. It has my home directory from new OS installation, but not previous. I tried browsing using time machine and Finder as well. There is no home folder for my account.

What's interesting is that it has this directory after reinstall and I restored several directories even yesterday, but not it is missing.

Any ideas what happened and how to restore it?

I can't think of anything other than VERY SERIOUS Time Machine bug.

Actual stereo sound with bluetooth headset

I have a bluetooth headset (Logitech UE9000), I always found the sound quality on OSX to be less than when connected to my android phone.

Further investigation leads me to believe that there is no stereo sound being outputted. A simple youtube stereo test (e.g. http://ift.tt/1yLrbRb) has the result of left or right channel to be outputted simultaneously to both earspeakers.

This is not an quality issue, the sound is clear, as such, the advise which is littered everywhere on the web to up the quality by doing some command line magic is not helping:

defaults write com.apple.BluetoothAudioAgent "Apple Bitpool Min (editable)" 200

By alt-clicking on the bluetooth icon I can see that my active codec is "AptX" which should be the correct codec for high quality.

Connect 3 iMac 21" Screens together?

What's the best solution to connect 3 iMac screens together so they're all usable as one large screen.

I currently have 2 iMac's connected together via a single thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable (Which works fine, mouse goes between the 2 screens etc).

google plus iOS app logout issue

i have made an iOS app in Xcode and did a google plus integration for login in it using http://ift.tt/IImK38 The login part runs perfectly ok. but the issue is with logout. actually the problem is after login when i press logout button it does not actually log me out. after logout when i login again instead of asking me username and password it actually stick on the previous user login account i.e logout does not clear the login session after logout.the sign out and disconnect methods does not create any impact .so please suggest me a way to logout.

hope somebody can help. As with a lot of posts my Finder constantly crashes. I've de coupled Dropbox and Google Drive. I've Deleted Finder preferences and its still the same. How to check if VPN connection can be established automatically?

I recently ran into the problem that a VPN connection, type Cisco IPSec, could not be established. For some unbeknownst reason, the connection failed. The failing VPN connection is not the problem per se, yet it hindered me from doing what I wanted to do. I wish that I would have checked earlier if the VPN connection was alive so that I could have delegated the issue earlier.

So what I want is to be informed when the VPN connection cannot be established by automatically trying to connect once ever 4 hours or so and informing me immediately if it should fail.

How could I set up such a network test?

I have a Numbers spreadsheet with a few thousand rows containing a column with phone numbers. As part of a cleanup of the sheet, I need to identify rows where the phone number has been duplicated so that I can review the other columns to decide which of the duplicate rows to delete.

How do I apply either filtering or conditional highlighting to identify rows with duplicate values in that phone number column?

Is it possible to bind more than one items to the clipboard on osx? Which would possibly get evoked by different shortcuts? If it is how can I set it up?

Can't change purchased itunes videos to have media type other than Home Video

I have a number of files on my new Mac mini, imported into iTunes (12) from an external drive that had been serving as storage for my previous iTunes library on an old laptop that is now defunct. For some reason, most of these video files got changed to have their media type be “home video”. I have changed the media kind metadata on the files that were DVD rips, but I cannot change the media kind for the files that are iTunes purchases. These identify (in the File tab) as “Protected MPEG-4 video file” and play fine.

I can also see these files through Home Sharing on iPads and my Apple TV.

Nonetheless, I can’t change the media kind to “Film” or “TV programme” as appropriate, which is very annoying. Is there any trick I might use to fix this?

Removing Podcasts Documents and Data

I've had issues with the stock iOS podcast app for a while now- syncing was broken, it kept crashing while downloading, etc etc. I decided to move to Downcast. Anyways, after deleting all my podcast subscriptions, and then telling iTunes not to sync any podcasts to the device, I still have 3.3 GB of "documents and data" from the Podcasts app.

Obviously, I'd like to clear that space up. The Podcast app still will not open for me (white screen to crash every time), but there shouldn't be any Podcasts to delete in there anyways. Without being able to delete a stock app, is there any way for me to remove this waste of storage space?

Would prefer not to wipe the phone. iPhone 5, iOS 8.1.1

Sync iPhone over Wi-Fi with Mac when iPhone is connected to the Wi-Fi created by Internet Sharing

When my Mac and iPhone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, I can sync my iPhone wirelessly using iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and perform third party syncing like 1Password Wi-Fi sync.

However, the problem is that most of the time my Mac is connected to Ethernet, and my iPhone is connected to the Wi-Fi network created by Internet Sharing (Ethernet to Wi-Fi). When I'm under this setting, Wi-Fi syncing never works — for instance, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync is always stuck on "looking for [computer name]...".

Therefore, my question is: is it possible to tweak the network settings so that my Mac and iPhone could sync over Wi-Fi when the iPhone is connected to the Wi-Fi created by Internet Sharing? As a layman, it seems to me that since my Mac and iPhone are on the same LAN (are they?), syncing should be possible.

(I really want to use Wi-Fi syncing these days because I'm running short on USB ports — they are all taken up by external drives. Meanwhile I can't give up the Ethernet since that's a five-to-ten-time speed boost.)

Note that:

• I know very little about networking so please be detailed if you can;


• The command line is part of my daily workflow so please feel free to suggest command line solutions, provided that they are not ugly hacks that will potentially put my network under risk (if you do suggest an ugly hack, please consider explaining it or pointing to external resources — I have to understand a hack before applying it).

I would like to change the screensaver "Flurry" by the Ken Burns without using the Preference panel, directly using terminal or command.

"You can't resize the partition on this disk because it uses the Master Boot Record partition scheme

I am trying to get rid of one of the volume ("mountain Lion", the second from the top) of the partition of an external hard-drive. In disk utility I get what you can see in the pic, namely it does not allow me to modify the partition saying "You can't resize the partition on this disk because it uses the Master Boot Record partition scheme". Do I have to repartition the whole thing or is there a work around? (I am running Yosemite)
