OSX: window resize doesn't work

I'm developing an app for OS/X, so I've set the delegate on my NSWindow and I' receiving window resize events. However when I tell my main view controller to resize, all of the changes I make to the views' frames are ignored. What is the correct way to programmatically respond to a window resize? I am not using NSConstraints nor XIBs and I'd rather not.
