iBooks Highlight Syncing Problem

I highlight and write notes in .epubs on my phone through iBooks.

I have trouble syncing them with iBooks on my mac.

What's the best way to get them to sync up? It seems like a crapshoot where sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
