Macbook keeps showing question mark on startup

I am using MacBook 2010 with osx 10.6.8. Today when I started laptop it kept showing apple logo longer than expected then I read online which said to hold shift key when start. Doing that it started showing folder icon with question mark and it now keeps showing till laptop gets shut down. Right now I don't have any disk utility tool either. Please help
