Disk encryption and encrypted backups

I'm using hardware encryption on my WD My Book since program encryption build in OS X backup was performing extremely slow.

In last OS X(10.10.2) update they asked to use password for drive encryption and it's seems like entire drive is encrypted now with that password. Does it means encoded backup will copy encoded data without encryption on the fly and perform faster now so I can switch off my hardware encoding.
