Why won't my iphone 5c play music through my bose speakers?

I have just got an iphone 5c and bought an 8 pin to 30 pin adapter so I could play music using my Bose Series III dock but when plugged in the dock will charge my phone but will not play any music. Am I doing something wrong or do I just have the wrong adapter for the dock?
