How can I create a local network on OS X Yosemite compatible with Android Nexus 5 / 7?

How can I create a Wi-Fi network on my Mac with OS X Yosemite that my Android device can connect to (Nexus 5/7)?

The Android device does not see the network if I use Internet Sharing.
