iphone 6: calendar will not open on 'empty' day when adding events

Since upgrading to an iPhone 6 I'm finding adding new events to my calendar to be a problem. The calendar does not open to the day I press on the full calendar if it is already empty. So there's no way to add (+) an event on an empty day, it defaults to the next day with something already scheduled. Is there a way to directly go the date I want to enter an event into?
