How to make the Mail button on an iPad to sync to Gmail?

We use Gmail exclusively on an iPad. I want to either sync iOS Mail with Gmail or stop it from running (prefer the sync option). The iOS Mail on the doc just keeps adding mail. It never marks it read or deletes it in sync with Gmail. There are hundreds if not thousands of messages residing there that have been read and removed from Gmail.
