can't log on to Mac mini

I'm trying to log on to my Mac mini but when I try to use the arrow keys to select my user it just makes that sound when you press something wrong. The mousepad is never able to select the users at login and I always is the arrow keys, press return to select my user and then type the password, but tonight nothing is happening? I shut it down manually and restarted it but the problem remains....
