Can I install Win 8.1 pro with SuperDrive without bootcamp

I wish to install Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit without the use of bootcamp or any apple software.

I have wasted over 8 hours of my life trying to create a bootable USB image. I now realise I should just buy the superdrive so the disk can be read.

But before wasting my money, is it a simple process like its supposed to be? Put disk in drive > restart mac > install windows?

Or Is this going to be a long obstacle course?
