How do I access or view saved items on time capsule through time machine?

When I enter time machine, under shared, my time capsule shows up, however when I click it, it does nothing. How can I enter time capsule ( assuming in time machine ) and view the exact items stored?

Also when I view it on my finder, it has a data folder with a file that appears to be a copy of my lacie external hardrive? Or at least what I named it? My main goal is to see if I'm actually backing stuff up, and if I am, how do I access individual items?
